Abstract:A new 26.5-40 GHz helix-TWT with high efficiency has been developed at the Institute of Electronic, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. The main methods include the optimization of slow wave structure and large signal simulation, and a special 5-stage multistage depressed collector to increase power recovery. The test results show that this device has an average power of 40 W, a gain of more than 38 dB, an overall efficiency of more than 37%.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a K-band space traveling-wave tube (TWT) at the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS). This K-band space TWT can produce more than 65-W continuous-wave output power and 60% minimum overall efficiency in the operating frequency band. It achieves a compact size less than 260mm (L) x 60mm (W) x 70mm (H) and weighs less than 0.85kg.

Abstract:This brief presents the development of an -band (71–76 GHz) continuous wave (CW) space traveling wave tube (TWT) with substantial performance improvement. This tube was designed using modified folded waveguide (FWG) and dynamic phase velocity tapering (DVT) circuits, together with four-stage depressed collectors made of graphite. Based on calculation and simulation data, a prototype -band space TWT was fabricated, with the testing conducted at a relatively lower beam voltage of 14.1 kV and current of 70.3 mA. The test results show the prototype is capable of providing output power up to 106 W, gain of 41 dB and overall efficiency of 52%, at 71–76 GHz. It is also found within the 5 GHz bandwidth, the electronic efficiency is over 10.6%, while a maximum saturated output power reaches 122 W, with a corresponding overall efficiency of 55%. Given the above data, attained at the relatively lowered operating voltage and current, it is believed the overall performance of this -band TWT exhibits a substantial improvement as compared to those of the reported similar tubes.

Abstract:A new 26.5-40GHz double tape helix-TWT without metal vanes has been developed at the Institute of Electronic,Chinese Academy of Sciences.The main methods include the optimization of RF loss of slow wave structure with T-shape supported rods and materials of metal helix and envelope.The test results with a 4-stage multistage depressed collector show that this device has an average power of 40W,an electronic efficiency of more than 12%,and an overall efficiency of more than 37%.

Abstract:Broadband helix traveling wave tube (TWT), because of its wide bandwidth and high gain, has potential applications in electronic countermeasure (ECM) systems and space exploration. It's a challenge to obtain high efficiency TWT over a multi-octave band, since its fundamental efficiency is degraded and harmonic power content is enhanced at lower band frequencies and the efficiency at high frequencies deteriorates because of insufficient interaction impedance and large distributing loss. The fundamental method of the design of an ultra-broadband TWT usually uses two-section output circuit: the first output section using unloaded circuit is to make the growing wave gain occur only at lower end of the band; the second output section using a loaded helix circuit is designed to be in synchronism with the RF wave at all frequency. In this paper, this fundamental method was analyzed using Pierce small signal theory, and then the special helix pitch profile using only negative dispersion slow wave structure (SWS) was shaped to satisfy the design request. The helix pitch profile was optimized to obtain a higher electronic efficiency using genetic algorithm at high frequency (18GHz).
Efficiency Enhancement of Space TWT based on Collectability

Abstract:High efficiency is one of the essential requirements for modern space Traveling Wave Tube(TWT) development,and a single percentage point increase of overall efficiency is very significant to translate into potential revenue increases.The enhancement of overall efficiency was realized by optimizing the helix pitch profile of a TWT to maximize the collector efficiency.The maximum collector efficiency of a TWT normally conflicts with the basic beam-wave interaction efficiency.Such a conflict has been mitigated via setting the electronic efficiency higher than 25% as a constraint of the algorithm to ensure a high output power.The 3-D large signal Beam-Wave Interaction Simulator(BWIS)of MTSS,which was employed to calculate the output power and the energy distribution of the spent beam,was integrated with the Genetic algorithm.The detailed design of a Ku-band helix traveling wave was described and maximum collector efficiency of 89% with electronic efficiency of 26.9% was achieved from the simulation results.

Abstract:A high power Gyrotron Traveling-Wave Amplifier(Gyro-TWT) operating in the low-loss TE01 mode has been designed and demonstrated. The gyro-TWT consists of a double-anode magnetron injection gun(MIG), TE01 mode interaction circuit, a 36mm diameter collector, and a three disk sappire output window. A double-anode magnetron injection gun is designed to operate at 70 kV and 10A using the EGUN trajectory code and particle in cell program MAGIC. The electron beam with v⊥/vz =1.0 has a predicated axial velocity spread of 3-5%. The TE01 mode interaction circuit is made up of a section of alternating metal and lossy ceramic (BeO+TiO2) followed by a unloaded, metal-walled output region. The lossy property of the periodically loaded ceramic relieves the worries of the potential Bragg resonance arising from the periodicity of the interaction circuit, bring high attenuation to the potential competing mode, and enhances the stability of a gyro-TWT. The nonlinear self-consistent simulation code evaluated the operating characteristics of the gyro-TWT amplifier. For an axial velocity spread of Δvz/vz=3%, The predicted peak power is 180kW with -3dB bandwidths1.75GHz.

Abstract:Spatial power combining of two Ka-band microfabricated traveling wave tubes (TWTs) is reported. The TWTs are based on planar helix slow-wave structure with straight-edge connections (PH-SEC). Transition from a waveguide to the PH-SEC forms the basis for division of input power from a waveguide to the TWTs and for combining the output power into a waveguide. For a 3.7 KV and 10 mA beam, the PIC simulation results show that the output power can reach 13 W at 30GHz, with a calculated combining efficiency of 98%.

Abstract:A pseudo-periodic helix slow wave structure (SWS) is proposed to provide high output power with wide bandwidth in Ka-band. The support rods with curved metal provide flat dispersion and high interaction impedance, while a pseudo-periodic SWS suppresses backward oscillation and improves output power. The simulation results show that the traveling wave tube (TWT) with this pseudo-periodic helix SWS produces an average output power of more than 600 W in the frequency range from 26 to 36 GHz with beam voltage and beam current of 11.287 kV and 0.3 A, respectively, with a maximum output power of 700 W at 31 GHz, corresponding to a maximum gain of 42.8 dB and an electronic efficiency of 20.5%. The multiphysics analysis reveals the influence of the high-frequency losses on the temperature distribution in the operating condition. The results indicate that the maximum temperature in the last 15 circles is concentrated at the end of the pseudo-period helix SWS with a peak temperature of 304 °C, resulting in better heat dissipation performance, easier structural fabrication, and less deformation.

Abstract:Broadband operation is of great importance for the applications of travelling wave tubes such as high-data communication and wideband radar. An input/output (I/O) structure operating with broadband property plays a significant role to achieve these applications. In this paper, a Y-type branch waveguide (YTBW) coupler and its improvements are proposed and utilized to construct an extremely wideband I/O structure to ensure the broadband operation for sheet beam travelling wave tubes (SB-TWTs). Cascaded reflection resonators are utilized to improve the isolation characteristic and transmission efficiency. Furthermore, to minimize the reflectivity of the port connected with the RF circuit, wave-absorbing material (WAM) is loaded in the resonator. Simulation results for the YTBW loaded with WAM predict an excellent performance with a 50.2% relative bandwidth for port reflectivity under -15 dB, transmission up to -1.5 dB, and meanwhile isolation under -20 dB. In addition, the coupler has a relatively compact configuration and the beam tunnel can be widened, which is beneficial for the propagation of the electrons. A Q-band YTBW loaded with two reflection resonators is fabricated and microwave tested. Vector network analyzer (VNA) measured results have an excellent agreement with our simulation, which verify our theoretical analysis and simulation calculation.
Design of 71–76 GHz Double-Corrugated Waveguide Traveling-Wave Tube for Satellite Downlink

Abstract:The growing interest in wireless high-data-rate communications at millimeter waves for both terrestrial networks and satellite communications is stimulating novel solutions to overcome the strong atmospheric attenuation. In particular, the development of high-throughput satellite communication systems for Internet distribution is fundamental to complementing the terrestrial networks and to cover regions not connected to terrestrial backbones, such as at sea or remote areas. Ku-band and Ka-band satellite systems are presently available. Recently, the W-band (71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz) has been allocated for multigigabit transmissions, providing 5-GHz bandwidth for both uplink and downlink. However, it has been estimated that for enabling high-throughput W-band satellite communication systems, transmission power higher than 50 W is needed. In this paper, a 71-76 GHz double-corrugated waveguide (DCW) traveling-wavetube (TWT) is designed as an amplifier for high-data-rate satellite downlink, with about 70-W output power. The dispersion characteristic of the designed DCW is experimentally validated by a cold test. The proposed TWT is also a test vehicle, scaled in frequency, for a future novel 220-GHz DCW TWT for terrestrial wireless networks.
Continuous Wave Operation of a Ka-Band Broadband High-Power Sheet Beam Traveling-Wave Tube

Abstract:To meet the need to transmit increasingly massive volumes of data, a more than 3 kW continuous wave (CW) Ka-band sheet beam traveling-wave tube (SB-TWT) is reported for the first time. Working under unsaturated drive, the maximum gain obtained is 29 dB with a sheet beam of 30.9 kV, 0.82 A, and the efficiency exceeds 24% with a single-stage collector depressed to −15 kV. The 1-dB bandwidth reaches 6 GHz from 26 GHz to 32 GHz and the bandwidth with output power greater than 2 kW can even reach 7GHz from 26 GHz to 33 GHz. The realization of 99.8% static transmission as well as over 97% actual CW transmission of sheet beam is verified successfully, which benefits from adopting periodic cusp magnet (PCM) focusing, and thereby total weight is less than 15 kg. The relevant experimental details are introduced in this letter.

Abstract:In future electronic devices, the trade-off between power capacity and thermal management will be a severe challenge. In this letter, a sheet beam slow-wave structure (SB-SWS) has been proposed to realize high-power output while taking into account cooling design inside the traveling-wave tubes (TWT). The design of the modified structure ensures a sufficient axial electric field component to realize efficient interaction, meanwhile expands the width of the metal vanes by 327% to design micro-channel cooling. The power load capacity for electronic interception increased by 25%. Utilizing all-period optimization technology, the maximum output power can reach 4 kW, corresponding 18.8% electronic extraction efficiency. Also presented further is a proof-of-concept design model of Ka-band for practical test. The consistency between experiment and theory shows that this SWS is not only suitable for microwave frequency band, but more suitable for future miniaturized devices in sub-millimeter wave and terahertz bands.

Abstract:A concentric arc meander line (CAML) slow wave structure (SWS) was proposed for applications on low voltage and high efficiency Ka-band traveling wave tube (TWT). Due to the CAML formed with a series of concentric arcs, the electric field in the radial direction may be more uniform, which may make the beam–wave interaction more sufficient and the electron efficiency improved. The metal shielding structure with symmetrical ridges was employed for impedance matching to obtain a wide bandwidth. Simulated results demonstrate that the proposed CAML-SWS TWT has a good transmission performance in Ka-band. When the initial beam voltage and current is set to 720 V and 0.2 A, respectively, the output power of the TWT can reach 44.15 W at 35 GHz with the gain and the electron efficiency of 18.6 dB and 30.66%, respectively. Furthermore, the 3-dB bandwidth can cover 24–42 GHz and the electron efficiency is over 23.2% in Ka-band.

Abstract:Obtaining higher e-ciency during the development of space Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) is always one of the most important goals for scientists. In this paper, a scheme of obtaining the maximum theoretical overall e-ciency is explored by optimizing the helix pitch proflle of a TWT based on the collectability of spent beam. The collectability of the spent beam was evaluated by the maximum collector e-ciency, and this maximum collector e-ciency was employed to calculate the maximum theoretical overall e-ciency. The energy distribution of the spent beam and the output power of TWTs were calculated by the 3-D large signal Beam-Wave Interaction Simulator (BWIS) of MTSS. The detailed design of a Ku-band helix TWT is described according to three optimization goals (theoretical overall e-ciency, theoretical collector e-ciency and electronic e-ciency). The simulation results indicate that the optimization for high interaction circuit e-ciency or collector e-ciency by itself is not adequate to obtain maximum overall e-ciency. The maximum theoretical overall e-ciency of 77% was achieved via the optimization of slow wave structure for theoretical overall e-ciency.

Abstract:In this work, a K-band traveling wave tube (TWT) based on carbon nanotube (CNT) cold-cathode is developed, which achieves a large output power as well as a high power gain. Compared to traditional thermionic cathode TWT, the CNT-based cold-cathode TWT shows significant advantages in fast response speed, miniaturization, integration, and high efficiency. The CNT-cathode of the TWT can emit a current of 9.26 mA, and a high current of 7.80 mA is delivered to the TWT's electron beam tunnel. The maximum current of the collector is 5.90 mA, indicating that the current density of the electron beam in the helix circuit tunnel reaches 750 mA/cm2 and higher, and the maximum transmittance rate in the experiment can reach 92%. The demonstrated CNT-based TWT can output a maximum power of 10.90 W with a power gain of 15.60 dB, and the maximum power gain achieved is 18.97 dB. The above experiment results imply that the CNT-cathode has great potential for application in TWT devices.

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents design, fabrication and cold test of an ultra-wide band travelling wave tube (TWT) with planar alignment multiple pencil beams. The fundamental double-mode of staggered double vane slow wave structure (SDV-SWS) rather than the only one mode are put forward and adopted to match with the same electron beam to increase the bandwidth greatly. Simultaneous planar alignment multiple pencil beam tunnels are designed to improve interaction impedance and then to enhance output power, gain, efficiency, growth rate. The transmission performance of a two-stage 51-period SDV-TWT in G-band with structure attenuator between two sections shows that it indeed has an ultra-wideband performance from 81 to 110 GHz. By using computer numerical control machining, the SDV-SWS was manufactured and a detailed cold test was conducted. Good agreement is found at the wide band, where S 21 is above − 5 dB and S 11 is below − 10 dB. 3D PIC simulations with double-mode multiple-beam SDV-TWT within total length of 70 mm show that it can get a nearly 2120 W peak output power, a 42.5 dB corresponding gain and a 10.7% electron efficiency at 94 GHz with a 22.1 kV beam voltage and a 3 × 0.15A beam current. The 3 dB bandwidth of our double-mode SDV-TWT can achieve about 29 GHz.

Abstract:In this article, the design and experimental verification of a 200-kW ${Q}$ -band gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier are presented. A low-velocity spread magnetic injection electron gun (MIG), a new type of multichannel TE<sub>01</sub> mode input coupler, and a broadband double-disk output window are adopted in the design to improve the performance of the gyro-TWT. At the same time, the lossy ceramic ring-loaded high-frequency interaction circuit is constructed to provide the required loss for stable operation, and the potential oscillations are effectively suppressed. Saturated peak power of 208 kW and 12.5-kW average output power are measured at 47 GHz by hot test, corresponding to a saturated gain of 50.2 dB, an efficiency of 29.4%, and a −3-dB bandwidth of 5.5 GHz.

Abstract:A new slow wave structure (SWS), named E-plane loaded sine waveguide (EPLSW) SWS is proposed for the development of G-band traveling wave tubes (TWTs). The structure, derived from the sine waveguide (SW) SWS, features staggered rectangular gratings on the two E-planes, intersecting with the sine-shaped gratings. The natural electron beam tunnel lies between these gratings. The EPLSW-SWS offers improved characteristics compared to the conventional SW-SWS. High-frequency simulation studies reveal that the passband of the EPLSW-SWS extends by more than 33 GHz over the SW-SWS under identical dispersion conditions. Additionally, the interaction impedance of EPLSW-SWS surpasses that of the SW-SWS in the frequency range of 195–255 GHz. Further analysis through particle-in-cell (PIC) results presents that when operating at 19.5 kV and 145 mA for the sheet beam current, it attains a maximum saturated power of 132.7W and a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 50 GHz.
