Abstract:Treated as the bin packing problem, the depository loading problem of cool steel coils is discussed for the annealing shop of a cool steel rolling factory. A mathematical model is established and an on-line algorithm is constructed. An optimized loading scheme is obtained, which results in rapid passing of coll steel coils and improved productivity. By comparing the performances of several algorithms with numerical experiments, a reasonable and effective algorithm is given.
The Optimal Design for the Production of Hot Rolled Strip with “tight Oxide Scale” by Using Multi-objective Optimization

Abstract:Recently, customers are demanding for hot rolled strip products to have tight oxide scales on the surfaces. Therefore, high finishing rolling temperature, low coiling temperature and fast finishing rolling speed have to be used to obtain tight oxide scale, which is different from conventional controlled rolling. In order to ensure the mechanical properties at the same time, a framework consisting of the Bayesian neural network and multi-objective particle swarm optimization has been established to determine the optimal hot strip rolling parameters. Due to excellent generalization ability, the Bayesian neural network was employed to develop the model for the prediction of mechanical properties of hot rolled automotive beam steels. The accuracy between the measured and predicted values was within +/- 30 MPa and +/- 4% for strength and elongation, respectively, providing a reliable model for the optimal process design. By applying multi-objective particle swarm optimization, the optimized hot rolling process was obtained for the production of hot rolled automotive beam steel with "Tight Oxide Scale". Industrial trials have been carried out, which showed good agreement with the optimized hot strip rolling processes. It has been theoretically and practically proven that the optimal process design framework can effectively locate the optimal processing window for hot strip rolling.

Abstract:A large steel company needs to improve its efficiency by integrating the decision making from suppliers to buyers. Therefore, an optimization model is required to determine simultaneously the optimal raw material allocation, liquid steel allocation subject to maintenance schedule, and coils allocation from Hot Strip Mill (HSM) to five sub divisions under HSM. The model is aimed at maximizing total profit with several constraints such as production capacity at each sub division, maintenance cost, and inventory balance. We use the operation research methodology to solve the problem, start with problem definition, model development, find optimal solution, and sensitivity analysis. The model was solved using the Oracle Crystal Ball software. Sensitivity analysis results show that the objective function is sensitive to the changes of maintenance cost, raw material price, and product selling price. The allocation of coil, liquid steel, and the amount of raw material orders are sensitive to the maintenance cost and product selling price.

Abstract:Induction heating technology is used in the edge of intermediate billets to compensate the temperature drop of intermediate billets during the hot rolling cooling, thereby improving the quality of the rolling and the yield. In this paper, a C-type hot rolled strip edge heating model is developed to calculate the eddy current and temperature fields. The factors that influence the eddy current and temperature fields in steel billets are also analyzed.

Abstract:In order to predict and control the exit temperature of continuous casting slab before the down-stream direct rolling process, a three-dimensional model for the heat transfer and solidification during continuous casting has been developed based on the realistic roller-diagram and spray nozzle arrangement. Both heat transfer properties and flux distribution of the nozzle spray on the slab were considered, and the complicated boundary conditions, such as spray cooling, natural convection, thermal radiation as well as contact cooling of individual rolls were involved in the model. By calibrating the caster dependent model factor, the calculated temperature and solidification end accorded with the practice. An example of modifying the thick slab temperature at the caster exit before the hot rolling showed that the slab temperature at the caster exit was effectively improved by decreasing the spray cooling water at the last loop of the secondary cooling zone, raising the casting speed and decreasing the pouring temperature, which satisfied the requirement of the continuous casting and direct rolling.

Abstract:To solve the contradiction between consumer's personal demand and mass production of steel enterprise, the optimal design for hot strip rolling of steel attracts researcher's attention. The core of the ensemble system is the artificial neural network (ANN) model, which is based on the industrial data. However, industrial data are difficult to be used for modeling because of their high dimension, low quality, and unbalanced. In current work, the method for industrial data processing is proposed for microalloyed steel. Based on the treated data, the mechanical property prediction models are established with the relative error of +/- 8% for yield strength (YS), +/- 6% for tensile strength (TS), and the absolute error of +/- 4% for elongation (EL), respectively. Combined with the multi-objective optimization algorithm, the ANN models are implemented for designing the hot rolling process for S360 grade steel to control the stability of product quality.

Abstract:<p>Three-dimensional (3D) coil core is one kind of transformer iron core that is made of grain-oriented electrical steel. This material should be annealed before use because of the residual stress generated inside the silicon steel strip during production. The temperature evaluation of the 3D coil core is important to its annealing quality, but this temperature cannot be measured easily and the prediction method is seldom mentioned in the open literature. A numerical model, which considers the anisotropic heat conduction inside the 3D coil core and convection and radiation heat transfers inside the furnace, is built to link the temperature of furnace with the temperature of 3D coil core. Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the view factors between surfaces in the furnace. Thermal radiation resistance network method is used to obtain radiant heat flux. A computational fluid dynamics model is established to predict the convection heat transfer coefficient. The finite volume method is used to solve the anisotropic conduction inside the 3D coil core, wherein radiant heat flux and convection heat transfer coefficient serve as boundary conditions. The model considers the effects of size, position, location, orientation, and number of 3D coil cores on the temperature evolution. Onsite experiments verify that this digital model is precise in practical application, and the typical simulation error is less than ±2.5%. A straight forward optimization strategy is proposed on the basis of the digital model. The onsite experiments also show that the optimization method can effectively shorten the annealing time and increase the efficiency of the annealing process. Making a near real-time prediction and keeping 3D heat transfer features are the advantages of the present method.</p>

Abstract:Recently, hot strip rolling processes are required to be agile and accurate in order to meet more and more diverse market demands. Under such circumstances, the traditional processing optimization by time-consuming pilot experiments becomes difficult. To realize this target, core models of processing and mechanical properties are often established by neural network methods, which are used to handle non-linear multi-variant systems. In modeling processing and mechanical properties, we found that the abnormal values in industrial big data could result in wrong predictions for the relationships between processing and properties. In the present work, therefore, data processing has been developed to prevent misleading predictions, which was performed by eliminating the redundant, abnormal, and imbalanced data before modeling. The Bayesian neural network was used to construct the modeling of mechanical properties for hot rolled C-Mn steels, which demonstrated that the accuracies between the measured and predicted values were within +/- 10% and +/- 5% for strength and elongation, respectively, providing a reliable model for the optimal process design. By applying the multi-objective optimization algorithm named Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2), the hot strip rolling processes for C-Mn steels were optimized in order for either stabilizing variations of properties or upgrading mechanical properties. Industrial trials were extensively carried out, showing good agreements with the optimized processes.
Optimal Design of Hot Rolling Process for C-Mn Steel by Combining Industrial Data-Driven Model and Multi-Objective Optimization Algorithm

Abstract:A successful mechanical property data-driven prediction model is the core of the optimal design of hot rolling process for hot-rolled strips. However, the original industrial data, usually unbalanced, are inevitably mixed with fluctuant and abnormal values. Models established on the basis of the data without data processing can cause misleading results, which cannot be used for the optimal design of hot rolling process. Thus, a method of industrial data processing of C-Mn steel was proposed based on the data analysis. The Bayesian neural network was employed to establish the reliable mechanical property prediction models for the optimal design of hot rolling process. By using the multi-objective optimization algorithm and considering the individual requirements of costumers and the constraints of the equipment, the optimal design of hot rolling process was successfully applied to the rolling process design for Q345B steel with 0.017% Nb and 0.046% Ti content removed. The optimal process design results were in good agreement with the industrial trials results, which verify the effectiveness of the optimal design of hot rolling process.

Abstract:Ferrite transformation plays an important role in the microstructure evolution process during hot rolling of steels, which determines mechanical properties of the products. Therefore, accurate mathematical models must be developed for better microstructure control. A thermodynamics-based mathematical model, employing the nucleation and growth theories, has been developed to describe ferrite transformation behavior during hot strip rolling of the Q460 grade steel. In this paper, a new modeling of the incubation time (τf) for austenite to ferrite transformation was developed. By applying the Scheil's additivity rule, transformation start temperatures during continuous cooling were calculated, and Cahn's transformation kinetics theory was adopted to calculate ferrite transformation volume fraction during continuous cooling, showing that the models had a good accuracy in predicting the transformation kinetics.

Abstract:This paper addresses a hot-rolling scheduling problem from compact strip production processes. At first, a mathematical model that consists of two coupled sub-problems is presented. The first sub-problem is the sheet strip assignment problem that is about how to assign sheet-strips to rolling-turns with the objective of minimizing virtual sheet-strips. The second is the sheet-strip sequencing problem that is about how to sort the sheet-strips in each rolling-turn with the objective of minimizing the maximal changes in thickness between adjacent sheet-strips and the change times of the thickness so as to ensure high quality sheet-strips to be produced. And then, an improved hot-rolling scheduling heuristic is proposed to solve the sheet-strip assignment problem. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is developed to find the Pareto optimal or near-optimal solutions for the sheet-strip sequencing problem. Besides, the problem-specific knowledge is explored. The key operators including crossover operator, mutation operator and repair operator are designed for the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. At last, extensive experiments based on real-world instances from a compact strip production process are carried out. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for solving the hot-rolling scheduling problem under consideration. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The integrated scheduling for both continuous casting and hot rolling process (CC-HR) significantly affects productivity, product completion time and customer satisfaction of steel industry. Considering the parallel consistency with the actual production, the problem is formulated as a bi-level iterative optimization model in this study. The upper-level is a mixed-integer programming model with the objective function of minimizing the time difference between casting and rolling; the lower-level model is abstracted into a vehicle routing problem (VRP) with the objective function of minimizing the width, hardness and thickness jump penalty values for hot rolling batch planning (HRBP). In order to overcome the drawback that the optimization for the lower model is easy to fall into local optimality, a hybrid algorithm combining genetic algorithm (GA) with strong global search ability and improved variable neighborhood search (VNS) with strong local search ability is proposed in this study. Finally, the upper and lower models are iteratively solved to find the scheduling scheme with smaller time difference between casting and rolling while ensuring the optimality for each objective function. The experimental results demonstrate that the established bi-level iterative model and the proposed optimization algorithm are both effective, as well as having obvious advantages in reducing the slab off-line time compared with some common methods.

Abstract:<p>The flatness control system consists of two subsystems. One is the feedback control subsystem which is used to implement the closed-loop flatness control. Another is usually referred to as feedforward control subsystem in the field of strip flatness control. To realize the cooperative control of roll bending between two subsystems, a feedforward-feedback coordination control strategy based on double-layer optimization is proposed to obtain the optimal adjustments of actuators. Firstly, a global optimization model of actuator adjustment is established by the overall modeling, and an improved interior penalty function method is developed and utilized to solve this model subsequently. On this basis, an optimal allocation model is proposed to achieve a global optimal allocation of actuator adjustments between feedforward control and feedback control. Numerical experiments and applications show that this new control strategy and the corresponding models are effective in the flatness control process of cold rolling mill.</p>

Abstract:Rolling is a well-established forming process employed in many industrial sectors. Although highly optimized, process disruptions can still lead to undesired final mechanical properties. This paper demonstrates advances in pass schedule design based on reinforcement learning and analytical rolling models to guarantee sound product quality. Integrating an established physical strengthening model into an analytical rolling model allows tracking the microstructure evolution throughout the process, and furthermore the prediction of the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the rolled sheet. The trained reinforcement learning algorithm Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) automatically proposes pass schedules by drawing upon established scheduling rules combined with novel rule sets to maximize the final mechanical properties. The designed pass schedule is trialed using a laboratory rolling mill while the predicted properties are confirmed using micrographs and materials testing. Due to its fast calculation time, prospectively this technique can be extended to also account for significant process disruptions such as longer inter-pass times by adapting the pass schedule online to still reach the desired mechanical properties and avoid scrapping of the material.

Abstract:In the process of rolling electrodes,due to the contradiction between the energy densityand the material mechanical properties of coatings on the electrode,the roller pressure should be con-trolled strictly according to the compression ratio.Actually,the roller surface made the gap betweentwo rollers difficult to measure through experiments.Consequently,it was difficult to directly quantify the relation between the gap size and roller pressure by using physical prototype.The variations of physical quantities during the electrodes manufacturing process were simplified to build the digitalmodel of rolling mill and electrode deformation.With the help of the digital model,the relation of gapvariation and pressure was quantitatively simulated.According to the above study,on the purpose ofsimulation-driven design,the structural parameters and work condition of digital rolling mill were op-timized by the response surface methodology and multi-obj ective genetic optimization algorithm.The stiffness test has validated the digital model and the simplification hypothesis.These results are im-portant to lay a plan for rolling processes;meanwhile the research and development efficiency is im-proved by the response surface-based design optimization.
Research on quarter wave shape control of cold rolled high strength steel based on BP-MOPSO

Abstract:The problem of quarter waves is more fundamental in the production of cold rolled high strength steel, which harms the quality of the strip shape. To reasonably and maximally exploit the quarter wave shape control capability of the cold rolling six-roller UCM mill, this paper establishes a BP-MOPSO-based shape optimization model for the 65MN strip produced by the 1720 UCM mill and makes a decision selection from the Pareto frontier according to the finished cold rolled strip shape requirements. To verify the validity of the model, an integrated static implicit model of the roll mill based on the initial mechanical properties and section profile is established based on ABAQUS software. The simulation results show that the appropriate increase in roll bending force can effectively reduce the regional depression at the quarter position of the strip, and the optimal bending force setting value found by the BP-MOPSO model can improve the strip shape to the maximum extent. The application shows that the optimized bending force setting value decreases the average shape high point from 16 to 8 IU in actual production, which can reduce the generation of quarter wave shapes of high-strength steel to a certain extent and improve the accuracy level of shape control in UCM mills.
