Abstract:The need to design structures for ever harsher environments, to greater heights and spans, with greater controllability and durability, and of greater economy and safety, calls for creative solutions by today's structural engineers. This paper examines the issue of fostering structural engineering creativity in students, which does not appear to have been discussed in the open literature. The paper begins with a brief discussion of creativity followed by an analysis of the design process as a creative process. This analysis identifies the deficiencies in the current approach of teaching structural analysis which emphasises the mastery of skills for quantitative analysis hut neglects the development of structural insight and an ability for divergent thinking. A number of measures which may be able to rectify these deficiencies are then discussed These include the imparting of qualitative-analysis skills in students, the use of structural paradoxes to develop problem-solving skills, and a stronger emphasis in teaching on links between structural forms and functional attributes and between different structural forms.

Abstract:Based on a survey conducted among college medical students,this paper sums up the actuality of medical students' awareness of creativity as follows: They have a strong motivation in creativity but lack creativity-oriented practice;they have curiosity and thirst for knowledge but lack exposure to new things;they have independent thinking but lack problem-discovering ability.Based on the results of this survey and relating the practice of college medical education,the paper suggests encouraging medical students to participate in research;improving teaching methods and encouraging after-class activities.

Abstract:It employs the survey data which Graduate School of Education in Peking University held in the investigation of Beijing college students' development.Creativity is one of the most critical criteria to evaluate quality of graduate students.This study examined the creativity of Chinese graduate students from students' behaviors,cognition,personality,and knowledge.Chinese graduate students' creative academic outcomes were mainly determined by changes in creative behaviors,cognitive skills,and knowledge-learning,which were significantly promoted during graduate education.Engagement in course-learning,academic advising and assistance in job-finding and daily life from supervisors,were the factors that mostly impacted creativity development of Chinese graduate students.The quality and quantity of creative outcome rely even more on their improvement of intellection and their construction of knowledge.

Abstract:The Outline of China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development(2010-2020) has explicitly mentioned that higher education needs to cultivate high quality expertise and innovative personnel.It should be considered by higher education institutions to transform the aim into educational activities to benefit undergraduates who have creative potential.Based on the data of Chinese College Student Survey collected by the Institute of Education,Tsinghua University,the sample is divided into three groups,i.e.students winning international/national award,students winning other awards,students not winning awards.Using statistical methods,the study analyzes whether the degree of students' creativity enhancement among three groups is significantly different,examines the relationships between winning awards and creativity enhancement,explores how the factors,such as personal characteristics,environmental variable,engagement and interaction,influence students' creativity enhancement.

Abstract:Recently,voices have pervasively arisen for solving this severe problem of creativity and finding a way out;the present report is one of these.It is concerned with an attempt to fill this gap by adopting the'severe' and 'harsh'(from a Chinese perspective) education model,which is,however,very much popular in the American higher education.The practical course of our experiment is Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) for those graduates enrolled in the Overseas Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Program at Beijing Normal University.The principle adopted is meant to be embodied in the whole teaching process of this course,including lecturing,group discussion,bi-weekly assignments,final test,and course paper writing.After two years' consciously goal-oriented endeavors,the research group has obtained some satisfactory achievements,which are clearly suggested in the feedbacks from the relevant students surveyed.The paper also lays out improvement room for further efforts for the teachers.The principle and methodologies adopted here are thought to be helpful for other graduate programs in China as well.

Abstract:In this paper,a survey mainly connecting the means of interview and questionnaire is designed to reveal the relationship between experience of studying abroad and the creativity of Chinese undergraduate students.The sample of 295 undergraduates is divided into three groups,namely,(1) native Chinese college students currently studying as international students pursuing their Bachelor′s Degree in foreign universities,(2) Chinese college students in domestic universities with previous overseas exchange experience,and(3) domestic Chinese college students who have never been aboard.The results demonstrate that the above three groups of undergraduates differ in their creativity,with the second group taking the lead.It is revealed that experience of studying abroad tends to have a positive impact on college students′ creativity in general.Concerning all the indicators of study experience in this study,the one correlating with creativity most is extracurricular activities.Cross-cultural acculturation tends to effect on the creativity of students studying abroad for a long time.
