Abstract:In recent decades an infusion of economics has lent the study of strategy much needed theory and empirical evidence. Strategy consultants, armed with frameworks and techniques, have stepped forward to help managers analyze their industries and position their companies for strategic advantage. Strategy has come to be seen as an analytical problem to be solved. But, says Montgomery, the Timken Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, the benefits of this rigorous approach have attendant costs: Strategy has become a competitive game plan, separate from the company's larger sense of purpose. The CEO's unique role as arbiter and steward of strategy has been eclipsed. And an overemphasis on sustainable competitive advantage has obscured the importance of making strategy a dynamic tool for guiding the company's development over time. For any company, intelligent guidance requires a clear sense of purpose, of what makes the organization truly distinctive. Purpose, Montgomery says, serves as both a constraint on activity and a guide to behavior. Creativity and insight are key to forging a compelling organizational purpose; analysis alone will never suffice. As the CEO--properly a company's chief strategist--translates purpose into practice, he or she must remain open to the possibility that the purpose itself may need to change. Lou Gerstner did this in the 1990s, when he decided that IBM would evolve to focus on applying technology rather than on inventing it. So did Steve Jobs, when he rescued Apple from a poorly performing strategy and expanded the company into attractive new businesses. Watching over strategy day in and day out is the CEO's greatest opportunity to shape the firm as well as outwit the competition.

Abstract:Peter F. Drucker suggested that for enterprises, compared with planned enter, wellplanned abandon is more important. The vital problem for every organization and company is how to survival in fierce competition. That is, how to optimally position its valuable recourses under the double restrictions: limited recourses and limited market space. The strategy of positioning resources decides an enterprise’s long-term competitiveness. So, although mastering opportunity to enter a new market is essential, selecting a right market withdrawal strategy in the right time is also a key. Based on mass research, CFO World tries to contribute a set of thinking model of market withdrawal strategy for local CFO. Hopefully, that could be some useful hints for CFO’s daily work.

Abstract:Shareholder -supremacies are the core of corporate governance in Anglo-Saxon system.Some management paradoxes emerged because this thought has been neglecting the stakeholders' claims.The stakeholder theory,however,argues that whether or not a firm can survive and develop depends on how effectively it deals with various stakeholders,among which shareholder is just one.In the era of new economy characterized by knowledge,information and globalization,the stakeholders' participation determines the corporate performance.In this context,it is argued that enterprises should abandon shareholder -supremacies,focus on fostering and developing human capital value of employees,and satisfy stakeholders' interests appropriately.

Abstract:As a critical component of management system,the stra-tegic management involves strategic estimation,proposition and budget,strategy implementation,adaptive and interactive strategic control system. On the other side,as one of the modern corporate governance principles,board of directors should evaluate the whole strategy process,especially in the underdeveloped capital market of China. This article provides a logic frame and index system of cor-porate strategy process evaluation for board of directors. Along with the further reformation of corporate governance,Chinese enterprises have been confronted with a handicap that how governance effect management efficiently,thus create value. For the corporate strategy process is a complete system from top to down,whether every aspect of this process can do their strategic du-ties relates to the success or failure of the whole strategy. Therefore,how to effectively improve and expand the strategic functions of the board has been the critical factor in improving its function. Based on the illustration of the corporate strategy process and the logic frame in strategy process management for board of directors,this paper designed the evaluation index system for board of directors which targets at managers. It includes the evaluation indexes system on stra-tegic judgment,proposition and budget,strategy implementation.

Abstract:Research summary: We develop and test a set of hypotheses on investors' reactions to a specific form of impression management, public presentations of overall strategy by Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). Contrary to expectations from a “cheap talk” perspective, we suggest that such strategy presentations convey valuable information to investors, especially in conditions of heightened information asymmetry associated with varying types of new CEOs. Broad empirical support for our theoretical arguments is shown in a sample of strategy presentations carried out by NYSE and NASDAQ listed organizations over 10 years. Our research contributes to literature on new CEOs and impression management. We draw out implications both for management and for further research. Managerial summary: We examine the impact of public presentations on company strategy by Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) on company stock prices. Adjusting for market movements in general, on average stock prices rose by 1.6 percent following these strategy presentations. Strategy presentations received larger reactions the more the CEO was unfamiliar to investors. Thus, stock price gains for new CEOs in general were 5.3 percent; for external, within‐industry new CEOs, they were 9.3 percent; and for external, outside‐of‐industry new CEOs, they were 12.4 percent. Given that only 40 percent of new CEOs present on strategy in their first 200 days post‐appointment, we suggest that new CEOs pay more attention to this potential means of communicating, especially if they are unfamiliar to investors. Abstract:A firm's business-level strategy dictates how the firm competes in its chosen line of business.The best way for a firm to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in its chosen market is to reinforce its business-level strategy with a host of activities,including functional policies,organization structure,etc.The choices made by each firm are likely to determine,to some extent,the level of tax avoidance because the firm strategies are,in part,based on firms' willingness to deal with risk and uncertainty.We examine whether a firm's business strategy influences its level of tax avoidance.We find that firm engaging in a strategy that focuses on minimizing and reducing the uncertainty of costs avoid fewer taxes than firms that not only follow a strategy focusing on product differentiation and the aggressive pursuit of opportunities,but are more willing to deal with uncertainty(prospectors).And we also find that companies with different strategy rely on reputation differently as the risk caused by tax avoidance is different.So for the popular companies,the impact on tax avoidance behavior of strategy is greater.Our results will help to further understand the impaction of different company's competitive strategy on their micro behavior.

Abstract:How the domestic enterprises in a developing economy formulate an effective strategy in an environment of global competition is half a void not fully touched in strategic management. This significant topic is explored in this paper by the discussion of three interrelated issues. First, we have evaluated the external conditions of such a transitional developing economy as China, on which basis we have identified four key strategic factors-localization, resource-expansion-oriented growth, strategic divergence and collaboration fro competition-that form the basis for the successful strategy of domestic firms. Then, we have applied this four-factor model to analyzing such a special group of firms facing competitive changes as China's high tech corporations. Finally, we have proposed the concept of strategic complexity for future exploration. In addition to making theoretical contributions, we have offered managerial recommendations and the direction in making relative policies.

Abstract:There is a disconnect in most companies between strategy formulation and strategy execution. On average, 95% of a company's employees are unaware of, or do not understand, its strategy. If employees are unaware of the strategy, they surely cannot help the organization implement it effectively. It doesn't have to be like this. For the past 15 years, the authors have studied companies that achieved performance breakthroughs by adopting the Balanced Scorecard and its associated tools to help them better communicate strategy to their employees and to guide and monitor the execution of that strategy. Some companies, of course, have achieved better, longer-lasting improvements than others. The organizations that have managed to sustain their strategic focus have typically established a new corporate-level unit to oversee all activities related to strategy: an office of strategy management (OS M). The OSM, in effect, acts as the CEO's chief of staff. It coordinates an array of tasks: communicating corporate strategy; ensuring that enterprise-level plans are translated into the plans of the various units and departments; executing strategic initiatives to deliver on the grand design; aligning employees' plans for competency development with strategic objectives; and testing and adapting the strategy to stay abreast of the competition. The OSM does not do all the work, but it facilitates the processes so that strategy is executed in an integrated fashion across the enterprise. Although the companies that Kaplan and Norton studied use the Balanced Scorecard as the framework for their strategy management systems, the authors say the lessons of the OSM are applicable even to companies that do not use it.
