Abstract:Based on the structure of statement of cash flow, this paper develops a model to measure the management of cash flows from operating activities (CFO). We verify the model's effectiveness for the sample consists of 6146 firm-years over 1998-2006 of Chinese listed companies. We find that those companies with the incentive of reporting positive CFO or transcending CFO in previous year have much higher magnitude of CFO management. The results indicate that there exists the phenomenon of CFO management for Chinese listed companies, and these management activities are motivated by different incentives.

Abstract:In this paper, we concern about whether the economic conditions of the year when CFOs start their career will affect accounting information quality. Taking A-share listed companies in Shenzhen and Shanghai stock markets from 1999 to 2015 as the sample, we find that the companies with CFOs who started their career during economic downturns take less earnings management. We conduct a series of robustness tests, including: （1） separating upward earnings management and downward earnings management; （2） introducing the Heckman two-stage model, PSM sample and firm fixed effect; （3） using alternative variables for accounting information quality and economic conditions. The results are robust through the above tests. Further analysis finds that the rapidly changing economic conditions will gradually adjust the initial behavior characteristics of CFOs, so the CFOs who started their career earlier are less affected by the economic conditions at that time. In addition, the nature of company ownership, marketization process and share-trading reform will affect this relationship. Specifically, the variance in the two groups’ earnings management is significant before the share reform, for the state-owned enterprises, and in the low-marketized area.Our paper provides a new perspective to observe CFOs’ characteristics based on the imprinting effect of the economic conditions of the year when CFOs start their career and sheds lights on the determinants of accounting information quality.

Abstract:Journal of Emerging Market Finance, Ahead of Print. This research examines whether Chief Finance Officer (CFO) demographics (including age, educational background, gender and tenure) impact firm working capital policies. We argue that the personal characteristics of the CFO impact corporate financial policy, such as working capital management. Using a sample of listed companies in the China Stock market over 2000–2021, we find that CFO age, gender, education, and tenure determine firm working capital management. Further, we identified that findings are more pronounced within firms that do not have state ownership, suggesting that private ownership firms are likely to have aggressive working capital management. In terms of economic significance, our results demonstrated that a one-standard-deviation rise in CFO age is associated with a decrease in working capital of 1.09% to 1.39% for the sample firms. This implies that the effect of CFO age on working capital management is economically significant, implying that it considerably impacts the financial situation.JEL Codes: G32, G34, G39

Abstract:China's reform has favored gradual change and institution-building over rapid, large-scale social engineering. While multifaceted reforms are still in progress and market supporting institutions such as a social security system are still under construction, corporate governance and firm performance is being enhanced. Based on evidence from a 2001 survey of 451 Chinese firms, we found that firms initiated restructuring and lay-off program in response to financial concerns in general, while the specific methods were mediated by social and political constraints. Another finding is that top managers with poor financial performance tended to be removed from post at the juncture of corporate restructuring.

Abstract:Applying in-depth interviews with 22 Chinese executives, this study intends to interpret their perceptions of the four aspects of crises: causes, consequences, caution and coping. Findings suggest that the informants tend to blame external constituencies for frequent adverse events experienced by Chinese enterprises and equate crisis management with quick problem solving in which technical protection of corporate image via effective leadership is the top priority. Nonetheless, prescriptive lessons as presented in Western literature do occupy a position in the minds of Chinese executives. These lessons serve both as a counterpoint against which a desirable mode of crisis management in China is articulated and as a representation of personal aspiration that will remain an ambition as long as the Chinese economy has not passed certain hurdles in development. Based on the insights gained, we put forward an alternative way of thinking about crisis management, i.e., a manager's self-positioning within the larger socio-economic context rather than managerial competence defines what constitutes perceived meaningful forms and processes in which unfavourable circumstances are contained or handled.
