Abstract:Based on the structure of statement of cash flow, this paper develops a model to measure the management of cash flows from operating activities (CFO). We verify the model's effectiveness for the sample consists of 6146 firm-years over 1998-2006 of Chinese listed companies. We find that those companies with the incentive of reporting positive CFO or transcending CFO in previous year have much higher magnitude of CFO management. The results indicate that there exists the phenomenon of CFO management for Chinese listed companies, and these management activities are motivated by different incentives.

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to find out how corporate social responsibility (CSR) is viewed in the Chinese situation. The paper views CSR as an endogenous motivation for corporate social behaviour. The intended contributions of this paper are twofold. On the one hand, the authors intend to collect first‐hand data to understand the current status of Chinese managers' cognitions of CSR. On the other hand the paper intends to analyse the differences which exist in managers' cognitions on CSR among different kinds of firms in a Chinese context.Design/methodology/approachA random survey was conducted among 157 businessmen using the force‐choice questionnaire, based on the four‐part construct proposed by Carroll. The confirmatory factor analysis was utilized to test the construct validity of Carroll's conceptual model with the data sample drawn from Chinese situation. Then correlation, six pairwise t‐tests and MANOVA test were conducted for the purpose of this study.FindingsChinese managers' cognition of CSR is found to be consistent with the four‐component construct. A relatively strong preference toward economic component has been examined. The results present a significant negative correlation between economic cognition and all three of its non‐economic counterparts. No significant cognitive differences have been verified between firms with different characteristics.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper initially examined the cognition of Chinese managers toward CSR. Chinese managers are viewed as having an important role in decision making on social issues. However, how to promote the managers' cognition of CSR is needed for future research which will also examine the internal driving mechanism of CSR.Originality/valueThere has not been a great deal of empirical research done in the field of social responsibility in China. This study is a starting point for those who seek to understand the economic and sociological aspects of mainland Chinese business.

Financial Reporting and Disclosure Practices in China *

Abstract:We provide survey-based evidence on financial reporting and disclosure practices in China. We use the survey items used in prior studies based on U.S. CFOs (Graham et al., 2005; Dichev et al., 2013) as a benchmark to compare our results. We find some similarities between the U.S. and Chinese firms, but highlight some major differences in the perceptions on financial reporting and disclosure at Chinese firms. For example, Chinese firms do not consider analyst consensus forecasts as important earnings benchmarks, do not believe that voluntary disclosures reduce the cost of capital, and do not exhibit incentives to disclose bad news faster than good news. We provide additional evidence from follow-up questionnaires and on-site interviews that corroborate our main findings and explore the potential explanations. Taken together, our findings suggest that institutional differences at the country-level impose challenges on international studies that rely on theoretically-motivated empirical proxies or research questions from the U.S. setting.

Abstract:This article investigate CSR issues publicized by webs, annual report, and social responsibility report etc by list companies of China mainland in Forbes Global 2000 at the perspective of corporate communication. The empirical study is surrounded by the issues about the motives of CSR, the content of CSR, and the applications of stakeholders in it. Our research results indicate that CSR activities varies in kinds of companies at normal distribution, and shows positively related to the industry internationalized degree; The majority of the companies follow a value-driven CSR approach instead of a performance or stakeholder driven approach. At present CSR activities exists in the following three forms as public donation, obeying moral rules, and supporting philanthropic projects, which lacking of voluntary services and quality management. This study is innovative in using established and well received instruments from classic literature for measuring and evaluating CSR in China. It develops a new benchmark against which future studies can be compared. Over time, progress can be measured and explained. This study offers insights in enhancing the legitimacy of corporate social responsibility. Additionally this contribution provides insights for executives understand CSR more efficiently, especially answers partially in how to act with the special Chinese way of CSR. Furthermore, this contribution provides suggestions for executives of Chinese multi-national firms to re-think their CSR strategy.

Abstract:Journal of Emerging Market Finance, Ahead of Print. This research examines whether Chief Finance Officer (CFO) demographics (including age, educational background, gender and tenure) impact firm working capital policies. We argue that the personal characteristics of the CFO impact corporate financial policy, such as working capital management. Using a sample of listed companies in the China Stock market over 2000–2021, we find that CFO age, gender, education, and tenure determine firm working capital management. Further, we identified that findings are more pronounced within firms that do not have state ownership, suggesting that private ownership firms are likely to have aggressive working capital management. In terms of economic significance, our results demonstrated that a one-standard-deviation rise in CFO age is associated with a decrease in working capital of 1.09% to 1.39% for the sample firms. This implies that the effect of CFO age on working capital management is economically significant, implying that it considerably impacts the financial situation.JEL Codes: G32, G34, G39

Abstract:<p>We study the impact of CFOs with foreign experience on analysts' forecast accuracy in emerging markets. Using a unique data set from China, we find that analysts' forecast accuracy increases when firms hire CFOs with foreign experience, confirming the brain gain effect of CFOs. Our results are robust after addressing potential endogeneity by introducing the propensity score matched (PSM) procedure and Heckman two-stage method. Channel analyses show that CFOs with foreign experience are related to decreased earnings management and a greater probability of hiring high-quality auditors, indicating that the improvement in financial reporting quality and information environment brought by returnee CFOs mainly drive our results. Further cross-section tests reveal that compared to firms with more external pressure, the positive effect of returnee CFOs on analysts' forecast accuracy is more pronounced among firms with fewer analyst coverage and belonging to less competitive industries. Returnee CFOs with foreign work experience exert a more significant impact on analysts' forecast accuracy than those with foreign study experience. Overall, we provide the first evidence on the brain gain of CFOs in terms of analyst forecasts.</p>

Abstract:We investigate whether management's cognitions, values and perceptions are associated with fraud for 18 863 firm-years for Chinese listed firms from 2000 to 2014. Demographic characteristics of the chief financial officer (CFO) are used as proxies for management's cognitions, values and perceptions. We find that fraudulent financial reporting is higher when CFOs are younger, male, and have lower education backgrounds. An analysis of inflated earnings, fictitious assets, material omissions and other material misstatements provide similar results, with the exception that CFOs with higher education levels are associated with more inflated earnings.

Abstract:Based on the information of financial executives disclosed in the annual report of domestic public listed companies, this paper makes an empirical analysis on the features and influential factors of the CFO system in public listed companies. We find that there is no clear relationship between the features of the CFO system and the performance of companies. The result demonstrates that the CFO system construction of Chinese listed companies is still undeveloped. The positions and functions of financial executives mainly depend on the factors representing the personal status and longevity of financial executives but not on the enterprise purposes of improving company performance and corporate governance. From the perspective of corporate governance and enterprise system construction, it is crucial now to establish and enhance the functions and mechanism of CFO system in Chinese listed companies.

Abstract:Top executive succession is one of the most crucial events in the life of any firm. Based on the database of Chinese Entrepreneur Survey System,this research firstly reports new factors that influence the likelihood of succession in Chinese corporations, which may not exist in western companies, then tests previous western research result in Chinese information technology (IT) industry and traditional industry. The results are hopefully to enlighten the reform of corporations during the period of China transitional economy. Top executive succession has been the subject of increased research attentions in the literatures of both strategic management and financial economic. As well as trying to explain or predict succession, these studies have focused particularly on the effects of top executive, especially CEO turnover. Recent strategic management research has begun to address systematically the implications of CEO succession for firm performance. Dalton and Kesner has argued for more research on the linkage between top management characteristics and organizational performance (1 1) . At the same time literatures in the financial economics have paralleled the interest in these subjects. China is an interesting research subject of top executive succession, because of its special context during the transitional economy, which is never so complex in western country. We suppose include the factors examined in previous research, there must be some other particular factors in China affect executive succession. This study focused particularly on the relationship between corporation type, region, size and the succession decision maker, which are the crucial factors influence succession pattern. Further, we test some previous western research result to see whether it can be employed in Chinese firms.

Our review is based along four dimensions: top‐cited articles, main research fields, frequently contributing authors, and emerging research trends. We find that the increasing presence of China in global capital markets, along with its ongoing economic reforms, provides academics with opportunities to investigate distinct institutional environments and utilize natural experiments. This has led to the formulation of novel accounting and finance research questions, greatly advancing our understanding of accounting and finance research.</p>

Abstract:We examine the relationship between executives with financial backgrounds and corporate social responsibility (CSR) within a sample of A-share listed corporations in China from 2010 to 2020. Our empirical analysis indicates a noteworthy reduction in CSR activities associated with executives who have financial backgrounds. Further examination reveals that this reduction is more pronounced in private corporations and those facing intense market competition. These results imply that executives with financial backgrounds might exert unexpected spillover effects on corporate governance, offering potentially valuable insights into improving overall corporate governance standards.
