Abstract:A protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with methylene compounds catalyzed by task specifed ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium lactate under solvent-free conditions has been developed. The reactions proceed at ambient temperature and the work-up procedures are very simple. Good to excellent yields could be obtained. The ionic liuid could be simply prepared and recycled efficiently.

Abstract:The Biaryl-bridged Salen Ti complexes are a high active catalyst at substrate-to-catalyst ratios as high as 1 000:1 in the reaction of asymmetric addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide to aldehydes,and the optimal catalyst 4 derived from(R,R)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde produces trimethylsilyl ethers of cyanohydrins with up to 87% enantiomeric excess at ambient temperature.

Abstract:An efficient, clean and facile protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds catalysed by task specific ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium acetate in an aqueous medium has been developed. The reactions proceed at room temperature and high to excellent yields were afforded. The work-up procedure is very simple. The ionic liquid could be recycled for 10 runs without noticeably loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Trimerization of 2-methylpropanal (isobutyraldehyde) is a simple and effective method to synthesize 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol-3-monoisobutyrate which are often used as film forming auxiliaries in paints. The use of solid sodium hydroxide as a catalyst provides an excellent yield of above 85 % after the optimization of the reaction time and the catalyst dosage. Furthermore, trimerization of four other aldehydes with one α -hydrogen catalyzed by solid sodium hydroxide can also take place and the yield of 1,3-diol monoesters reaches 50–70 %. Trimerization of aldehydes with one α -hydrogen can be explained by a three-step reaction mechanism: (i) aldol condensation of aldehyde; (ii) crossed Cannizzaro reaction; and (iii) esterification of carboxylic acid and alcohol.

Abstract:Reaction of a—haloketones with aldehydes in the presence of either SmI3 or Sm/I2 formed the carboncarbon double bond to give α,β—unsaturated ketones in good to excellent yields under mild conditions. Samarium ( III ) enolates formed from the dehalogenation of α—haloketones by SmI3 were assumed to be the reaction intermediates.

Abstract:Two novel chrial bisaminoalcohols, 1, 3-bis-[(2' S)-(diphenylhydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl]-2-propanone (3) and 1,3-bis-[(2'S)-(diphenylhydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-1-yl]-2-propanol (4), were prepared using the 1, 3-dibromo-2-propanone and ( 21 S) - ( diphenylhydroxymethyl) pyrrolidine as the starting materials. The yields were 39% and 35%, respectively. The asymmetric direct aldol reactions of unmodified ketones and aldehydes were achieved with the ee up to 9% by using the bisaminoalcohol-diethylzinc as the catalyst.

Abstract:Allylsamarium bromide, prepared by the reaction of allyl bromide with samarium in THF at room temperature, reacted via 1, 2-addition with alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes or ketones to give homoallyl alcohol. The quantitative addition of allylsamarium bromide to alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones is a satisfactory display of regioselectivity. The structures of products were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR and MS spectra.

Abstract:Chiral N,N'-dioxide/Y(OTf)3 and Sc(OTf)3 complexes have been developed as efficient catalysts for the bisvinylogous Mukaiyama aldol reaction of silyl ketene acetal with α-ketoesters and aldehydes, respectively. The catalytic systems were highly ε-selective, and the substrate scope was wide. The corresponding ε-hydroxy-α,β,γ,δ-unsaturated esters were obtained in up to 95% yield and 98% ee.

Abstract:The chiral aziridine-containing vicinal iminophenol tridentate ligands (named salazins) are a class of readily prepared chiral ligands from enantiopure aziridines and salicylaldehydes. Their scandium and yttrium triflate complexes show excellent reactivity and enantioselectivities in the catalytic asymmetric aldol condensation of electron-deficient aromatic aldehydes and ketones, including acetone and cycloalkanones. The stereoselectivity is rationalized to the strong π–stacking interaction between aromatic aldehydes and the vicinal iminophenol group in the chiral ligands.

Abstract:Vapor phase aldol condensation of methyl acetate with formaldehyde was first studied over Al2O3 with different calcination temperatures and Al2O3-supported barium with different amounts of barium catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption, the pyridine absorption performed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, NH3 and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption. The results indicated that the calcination temperature affected the strength and the number of surface acid and base sites over the alumina catalysts. In addition, the moderate Lewis acid and weak base sites were critical to promote this aldol condensation reaction. Adding barium species, which could effectively modified the acid–base properties of Al2O3, clearly improved the catalytic activity and selectivity. The stability and regeneration of the optimum catalyst were also investigated and did not exhibit an obvious decrease in efficiency.Graphical AbstractAl2O3-supported barium catalyst was found to be an effective catalyst for vapor phase aldol condensation of methyl acetate with formaldehyde as a result of the appropriate intensity of acid and base.

The following reactions were investigated: (1) aromatic aldehydes with cycloalkanones, (2) aromatic aldehydes with aromatic ketones, (3) cycloalkanones with aliphatic aldehydes, and (4) the self-condensation reactions of aliphatic aldehydes and cycloalkanones.

Abstract:HgSO4 catalyzed hydrative cyclization of 1,6-heptadiynes is present. This reaction proceeded smoothly under the mild condition for differently 4-sustituted 1,6-diynic substrates giving corresponding 3-methyl-2-cyclohexenones with high to excellent yield. The microwave assisted aldol condensation of cyclohexenones under the catalysis of BiCl3 afforded 3-styryl-cyclohexenones with high regio- and stereo-selectivity.
