Abstract:The objective of this paper is to present development of 126 kV single-break vacuum circuit breaker. Three kinds of electrodes were compared, which were 3/4 coil type, horseshoe type, and slotted horseshoe type geometry. Characteristics of axial magnetic field, vacuum arcs, temperature-rise and short circuit current interruption were analyzed based on simulation and experiment. Average ring current density in electrode disc of 3/4 coil type, horseshoe type and slotted horseshoe type electrode at current of 40 kA was 1.7×10 7 ,(5.5 ×10 7 , and 3.5× 10 7 ,A/m 2 ,respectively. The maximum value of phase shift time of these three geometries region were 1.18, 1.57, and 0.48 ms, respectively. Two vacuum arcs columns with self-balance process was observed for horseshoe type electrode. 3/4 coil type electrode presented one arc column. Besides, vacuum interrupter with 3/4 coil type electrode met temperature-rise requirement at current of 2500 A according to simulation and experiment. Vacuum interrupter with slotted horseshoe type was suitable for normal current of 3150 A according to simulation. Finally, a 126 kV single-break vacuum circuit breaker with 3/4 coil type electrode was developed. It has passed type test according to standard ICE 62270-100.

Abstract:This paper introduces a research work on the development of high-voltage (HV) vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) in China from its start point 1989 to 2006. In this period, a 126-kV two breaks VCB prototype and a 126-kV single break VCB prototype were developed. A latest 252-kV single break interrupter prototype is introduced. Five HV VCBs technologies are discussed, which include HV vacuum insulation, high current interrupting technology with long contact gaps, increasing nominal current, operating mechanism characteristics, and contact bouncing damping. In vacuum insulation, adding a metal ring at electrode back can decrease breakdown possibilities in the gap between the electrode back and main shield. Surface melting layer of contact material could have influence on voltage withstanding capability of a vacuum gap. For interrupting high current with long contact gaps, strong axial magnetic field (AMF) is needed for a better vacuum arc control. Therefore, a single coil AMF electrode is introduced. Heat radiators are effective to increase nominal current of VCBs. Thermal analysis can help to give appropriate design parameters. There is an optimum opening characteristic that is helpful to improve the interrupting performance of VCBs. Permanent magnet operating mechanism and spring-type operating mechanism are suitable for HV VCBs. Contact bouncing in HV VCBs can be damped by installing contact spring and bellows on stationary end of VCBs.

Abstract:Because of great harmfulness for greenhouse effect, SF6 gas has to be limited. It is necessary to develop high voltage vacuum circuit breaker to replace SF6 circuit breaker. Insulating structure and arc characteristics of vacuum interrupter are the key. For 72.5 kV vacuum interrupter, impulse voltage test is carried to find out factor of effecting on its insulating performance and insulating structure is improved. As a result, a design of 126 kV vacuum interrupter is presented and electric field distribution is calculated. Based on statistical property of breakdown in high voltage vacuum interrupter, its voltage withstand capability is analyzed. The relation between arc voltage and arc current, the influence of gap distance on arc noise is measured on 72.5 kV vacuum interrupter and the experimental results are analyzed.

Abstract:High-voltage vacuum circuit breakers in transmission voltage, as their environmental friendly characteristics, are drawing more and more interests all over the world. The objective of this paper is to present experimental results of type-test for a 126kV/40kA-2500A single-break vacuum circuit breaker based on a standard of IEC 62271-100. Two kinds of test circuits were adopted in type tests for the 126kV/40kA-2500A single-break vacuum circuit breaker. One is direct test circuit for test duties such as out of phase making and breaking test duties OP1 and OP2. The other is synthetic circuit for test duties, such as terminal fault test, capacitive current switching test, short-line fault test, out-of -phase test, double earth test and electrical endurance test. Type-test results, for the 126kV vacuum circuit breaker, presented in this paper are as follows: Dielectric test, 230kV 1min power frequency voltage withstand test and lightning impulse voltage withstand test, with 15 times 550kV in both of polarities; Short time withstand current with 4s duration and peak withstand current test with 100kA; Terminal fault test, including test duties: T10, T30, T60, T100s, T100a; Out of phase making and breaking test, including OP1 and OP2; Short-line fault test L90 and L75; Double-earth fault test as well as capacitive current switching tests of class C1 with test duties of LC1, CC1 and LC2, CC2; Electrical endurance tests; And assessment of condition after test with a 80%of dielectric test voltage; Temperature rise test under rated current of 2500A; Mechanical endurance test of class M1. In summary, the 126kV/40kA-2500A single-break circuit breaker passed the type tests.

Abstract:Aiming at the fast protection requirements of electrical ships LVDC distribution system, this paper studies a topology of unidirectional vacuum hybrid circuit breaker. The hybrid circuit breaker is an improved current injection LVDC breaker based on precharged capacitor, which improves the dielectric recovery capability of vacuum interrupter after artificial current zero by using a freewheel diode. A synthetic test platform is built to study the dielectric strength recovery characteristics of a 45 mm diameter CuCr50 butt contact vacuum interrupter (driven by Thomson coil actuator, average opening speed of about 3 m/s)under high current(about 20 kA) and small gap(about 1 mm). The experimental results indicate that the dielectric strength of the contact can recover at a very fast speed within the arc time of 100 mu s; when the arc time is increased to 320 mu s, the dielectric strength of the contact cannot recover for a long time. Therefore, the design principle of the circuit breaker is obtained: within the arc time of 100 mu s, by increasing the arc time can increase the contact distance, so the transient interruption voltage tolerance margin of the circuit breaker can be improved. Based on the results of the test, this paper also proposes a calculation method of forced commutation circuit parameters, which is verified by the simulation. The research results show that the DC circuit breaker can realise the rapid breaking of 20 kA fault current within 2 ms, and has a good application prospect in the LVDC distribution system.

Abstract:The current-transferring type HVDC circuit breaker (CT-DCB) can reduce the investment cost and optimize the equipment utilization value. However, the operation reliability of the CT-DCB is lower than the hybrid HVDC breaker (H-DCB). In order to improve its reliability, the reliability improvement methods based on the equipment level and the system level are proposed. In the equipment level, a new diode clamped CT-DCB is proposed to improve the device reliability. In the system level, a redundant configuration strategy is proposed to improve the dc fault isolation capability and the backup protection capability. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, a simulation model of four-terminal HVDC transmission system with the diode clamped CT-DCB is established in PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results prove validity and feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:The controlled switching technology of a short circuit current has been proposed for a long time. However, the opening time of the mechanism used in the high voltage circuit breaker is normally tens of milliseconds and has a variation of milliseconds. The electromagnetic repulsion mechanism has a very limited variation in the opening time. It provides a potential of achieving the controlled switching of high voltage circuit breaker. The objective of this paper is to design a 126 kV double-break fast vacuum circuit breaker for controlled switching. The 126 kV fast vacuum circuit breaker driven by the electromagnetic repulsion mechanism. It is consist of two fast circuit breaker units. Each one has a vacuum interrupter and is driven by an electromagnetic repulsion mechanism individually. The two fast circuit breaker units are connected in series to withstand the voltage applied on the whole fast circuit breaker. Grading capacitors are used to balance the voltage distribution between the interrupters. Both fast circuit breaker units are arranged in the metal-enclosed tank. The external insulation of the fast circuit breaker units is provided by SF6 of 0.2 MPa.

Abstract:SF6 circuit breakers are widely used, to safely and reliably protect the high-voltage (72.5-1000 kV) power system. However, SF6 is a greenhouse gas. It is necessary to develop high-voltage vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) instead of SF6 circuit breakers above 110-kV power systems. To obtain the optimum performance from a high-voltage VCB design, the mechanism design must be perfectly matched to it. For a closing operation of a 126-kV VCB, most of the arc energy for performing percussion welding is from the prestrike arc and the bounce arcs if contacts close in vacuum when a high current passes through the contacts. An approach for minimum percussion welding in the closing operation of a 126-kV VCB is investigated by reducing both the prestrike arc duration and the bounce open duration. The breakdown phenomena in 126-kV vacuum interrupters are investigated to obtain a prestrike gap of 4 mm. The bouncing-open time of a prototype of a 126-kV VCB is measured in the prestrike closing velocity range of 0.7 to 2.0 m/s. The results show that the total arcing duration (including the prestrike arc and bouncing arc duration) is a function of the prestrike closing velocity (an average closing velocity in the prestrike gap (d) before the contacts touched each other). According to the function, the optimized prestrike closing velocity is 1.15 m/s, which can minimize the total arcing duration to 4.91 ms in the 126-kV VCB. The prototype of the 126-kV VCB passes the full-voltage synthetic making test successfully by applying the closing characteristic.

Abstract:In order to find the synergy of double-break vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs), we conducted a synthetic test including different vacuum gaps, different type electrodes, and different grading capacitors. The double-break VCBs are composed of Axial Magnetic Field (AMF) and Transverse Magnetic Field (TMF) contact VCBs, which can constitute four combinations. The optimal combination of AMF and TMF type electrodes was obtained by comparing with the breaking capacity and voltage distribution of the four combinations. The breaking capacity of double-break VCB with AMF and TMF type electrodes in series while the AMF interrupter is on the lower side is largest because the voltage distribution is the most even which is caused by the different equivalent capacitances of different interrupters. The optimal matching vacuum gaps of the best combination were obtained by a synthetic test of different vacuum gaps, which may make the grading capacitors of double-break VCBs small, even obsolete. The combination of maximum breaking capacity was series AMF type interrupters with suitable grading capacitors of 500–2000 pF. The experimental results provide the best combination and matching control mode for VCBs with double-break.

Abstract:Fast clearing of a short-circuit fault is vital to increase the transmission capacity of power grid transmission lines and improve the transient stability of a power system. A fast vacuum circuit breaker (FVCB) is a good candidate to realize quick elimination of a short-circuit fault. The original contribution of this paper is to present the design of a 72.5 kV single-break FVCB and its verification of short-circuit breaking performance. A specially designed 72.5 kV vacuum interrupter, with floating shields and reduced mass of moving components, was developed. An electromagnetic repulsion actuator was used to provide a high initial opening speed, V-1, of 5 m/s over half of the full-contact gap and a relatively low average opening speed, V-2, of 1.59 m/s in the full contact gap of 30 mm. The high-designed V-1 and low-designed V-2 were achieved with the aid of a deliberately designed oil buffer. The opening and closing time of the designed 72.5 kV FVCB was 1.2 +/- 0.04 ms and 18 +/- 0.20 ms respectively. The terminal fault test duty of T100s(b), carried out on the 72.5 kV FVCB, demonstrated both the 40 kA(rms) and 80 kA(rms) short-circuit current breaking performance. The short-circuit current breaking arcing time windows of FVCB, including the minimum arcing time, the maximum arcing time, and the middle arcing time, was verified to fulfill the requirement of the international standard, IEC 62271-100 2017, and the Chinese standard, GB/T 1984-2014, both for the 40 kA(rms) and 80 kA(rms) switching cases, respectively. Further development of the 72.5 kV single-break FVCB would benefit the development of ultra- or extra-high voltage FVCBs by reducing essential numbers of series-connected breaking units.

Abstract:This paper introduces the development history of vacuum circuit breakers. According to the low reliability of the vacuum circuit breakers with single opening and closing coil, this paper proposes a new type of 10kV quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils. This new type circuit breaker has two opening and closing coils, which together act on the metal disc of the circuit breaker to ensure the reliability. Then, the electromagnetic repulsion force of the metal disk is deduced using the equivalent calculation method. On this basis, mathematical analysis and calculation are performed on the electromagnetic repulsion of the circuit breaker's metal disc. Thereby the reliablity of the quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils is proved.

Abstract:Ultra-high voltage fast vacuum circuit breakers (FVCBs) could benefit a power system by promoting transient stability because their opening and closing times are significantly lower than those of commonly used circuit breakers at transmission voltage. This paper presents the design and verification of a prototype 363-kV5000-A 63-kA multiple-break FVCB. The prototype consists of two parallel-connected circuit branches in each phase. Each branch comprises three breaking units. The breaking unit, arranged on a 330-kV-class insulating platform, is a double-break FVCB driven by two independent electromagnetic repulsion actuators. The breaking units include a specially designed 40.5-kV vacuum interrupter (VI) with an extended ceramic envelope and optimized contact contours. A 4.0-nF grading capacitor is connected in parallel with each break to achieve a uniform stressed voltage distribution across the break. The prototype performs controlled switching of short-circuit current with an arcing time of 2.0 ms. The feasibility of the 363-kV FVCB is verified by a dielectric test on one break of the prototype and a series of tests on a single-phase prototype according to the international standard IEC 62271-100, 2017 and the Chinese standard GB 1984-2014. The tests include controlled switching of a short-circuit current in a short arcing time under different transient recovery voltages following test duties T100s(b) and T100a, short-time withstand current and peak withstand current tests, a temperature rise test, and an electromagnetic compatibility test.
