Abstract:Focusing on the fusion of the form of architecture and landscape,the new strategies emerged in these years are discussed and their backgrounds,developments,characters and examples are analyzed.The landscape field focuses on the deep structure of landscape,in which the form of architecture comes from the superposition of multi-layer control line systems.The operation of the earth’s surface is mainly from the reference to Land Art,and includes the reversing of the term roof/earth surface.The archetype form based on the collective unconscious has abundant symbolizing meanings,expressing the contrast and the tension between the artifact and nature.These new strategies promote the development of the form of contemporary architecture,suggest the trinity of architecture,urban planning and landscape architecture.

Abstract:The paper argues that landscape architecture should take land as a whole; the deep meaning of LA is land design, which differs from the traditional concept of landscape gardening. The current understanding of LA in China is limited to landscape gardening, which is harmful in facing the overwhelming process of urbanization and dramatic land change across the vast country. This paper therefore calls for a revolutionary rethinking of the profession and education of LA in China.

Abstract:"From nature to nature" is the major goal of landscape design. The former is the idea of nature, i.e., landscape architects regard nature as the archetype of design; the latter is the experience of nature, i.e., landscape architects hope people can perceive the natural atmosphere through designed landscape. In this sense, the transformation from idea to experience of nature refers to the process of landscape design, which materializes landscape. According to this, this article focuses on the following topics: 1) what role does nature play as the origin of the landscape design theory; 2) how does nature as an idea promote form-giving in landscape design; and 3) what aesthetic experience does designed landscape create. This article draws on two influential landscape architects, Xiaoxiang Sun and Lawrence Halprin, and analyzes their theories and works from the perspective of comparative culture, including the idea of nature and its representation, the inherent mechanism of form-giving in landscape design, and the experience created by designed landscape. It aims to explore the intellectual potentials for contemporary landscape architecture theory through comparing the discrepancies and similarities of the two masters' paths of landscape design.

Abstract:Based on rethinking of the situation in architectural development in China, and reacting to the heated tectonic conceptual discussions within the Chinese architecture world, the Graduate School of Architecture at Nanjing University held a symposium on Structure, Fabric and topography, which Kenneth Frampton of Columbia University was invited as a chief organizer Professor Frampton set the framework for the symposium and invited speakers from Japan,America and Europe.The discussion focused from the origins of these categories in mid-19th century Germany in thinking, then to the way as it is continuing to make itself manifest in contemporary architecture, landscape and urban form.

Abstract:Research on architecture from the perspective of geography has significant implications nowadays when the cultural internationalization is reviewed and the relationship between architecture and regional culture attracts more attention.The research object of this article is mountains,one of the topographic features.Mountains are characterized as regional distribution,height and gradient.The joint impact of the geological,topographic,climatic,hydrographical and vegetation factors result in certain regular discrepancy in the surficial structure of mountains.This article,from the perspective of nature geography,analyzed the impact of geographic features on architectures and the response of architectures to geographical environment in respect of the zonal and non-zonal features of mountains.

Abstract:The article approaches 'landscape architecture', insisting on the term 'architecture' as describing landscape formations accepted as structured systems of composed, perceptual elements presenting organizational and aesthetic value. The central idea of this proposal refers to the key concept that design systems do not copy reality in its full complicated substance; they simply cannot manage to represent and work with the complex totality of the real surrounding world. They rather design abstract formational elements that 'schematize' reality and create composing syntactic systems, composing 'languages'. It was in this context that modern 20th-century garden designers insisted on the comparison of landscape design approaches with architectural abstract building plans or abstract early 20th century-paintings. However, analogous correlations may also be regarded in the opposite orientation. Thus, contemporary architectural projects are often described as 'landscape formations' in a period of environmental sensitivity combined with enlarged topological awareness; the latter presents earth bas-relief as a convincing metaphor of topological mathematical transformations in general, associated with computational 'animate' design. Nevertheless, the principal aim of the article is firstly to insist on the interchangeable approaches of hard-scape architectural design and green-scape design in terms of analogous abstract and schematized formations. Moreover, the present article intends to propose a possible didactic strategy of landscape design for architects or students in schools of architecture and for attendees already accustomed to building or hard-scape urban design. This design didactic strategy is principally founded on the concept that common abstract 'schematized' formations underlie all those practices: landscape design as well as building and urban design.

Abstract:Scientifically recognizing and wisely intervening the evolution of landscape is an important topic in Landscape Architecture, since evolution (change) is absolute. For human, landscape changes, however, can be measured in a relative sense. Upon such an understanding, the concept “persistent landscape” highlights the landscape’s continuity and stability over time, as well as the stable variety of physical environment. The key to understand this concept lies in landscape architects’ observation of not only the stability of natural ecosystems but also the harmony of cultural-social contexts. However, the rapid urbanization has caused many pressing problems such as the loss of characteristics in urban and rural area, environmental pollution, ecological fragmentation, and cultural fracture, which calls for landscape architects who can re-recognize the man-land relationship and formulate scientific strategies for sustainable development. In this issue, LA Frontiers hopes to offer landscape architects with insights to meet contemporary needs by embracing new landscape forms and implications, so as to create healthier and more poetic-quality living environments with cultural and spatial characteristics.
