Abstract:Drawing on the correspondence between spectral clustering, spectral dimensionality reduction, and the connections to the Markov chain theory, we present a novel unified framework for structural analysis of image database using spectral techniques. The framework provides a computationally efficient approach to both clustering and dimensionality reduction, or 2-D visualization. Within this framework, we can also infer the semantic degrees of the images, i.e. imagerank, which characterize the richness of semantics contained in the images. Some illustrative examples are discussed.

Abstract:We describe the S*-action on the Quot-scheme Quot (8”) associated to the trivial bundle &"= CP x C". In particlular, the topology of the S*-fixed-point components in Quot (8”) and the S*-weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [LL-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S'fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mir-ror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcol-lection of the S*-fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S*-equivariant Euler class es1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down es1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using the method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:The Grassmann manifold of linear subspaces is important for the mathematical modelling of a multitude of applications, ranging from problems in machine learning, computer vision and image processing to low-rank matrix optimization problems, dynamic low-rank decompositions and model reduction. With this mostly expository work, we aim to provide a collection of the essential facts and formulae on the geometry of the Grassmann manifold in a fashion that is fit for tackling the aforementioned problems with matrix-based algorithms. Moreover, we expose the Grassmann geometry both from the approach of representing subspaces with orthogonal projectors and when viewed as a quotient space of the orthogonal group, where subspaces are identified as equivalence classes of (orthogonal) bases. This bridges the associated research tracks and allows for an easy transition between these two approaches. Original contributions include a modified algorithm for computing the Riemannian logarithm map on the Grassmannian that is advantageous numerically but also allows for a more elementary, yet more complete description of the cut locus and the conjugate points. We also derive a formula for parallel transport along geodesics in the orthogonal projector perspective, formulae for the derivative of the exponential map, as well as a formula for Jacobi fields vanishing at one point.

Abstract:Discovering the underlying structure of a high-dimensional signal or big data has always been a challenging topic, and has become harder to tackle especially when the observations are exposed to arbitrary sparse perturbations. In this paper, built on the model of a union of subspaces (UoS) with sparse outliers and inspired by a basis pursuit strategy, we exploit the fundamental structure of a Grassmann manifold, and propose a new technique of pursuing the subspaces systematically by solving a non-convex optimization problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers. This problem as noted is further complicated by non-convex constraints on the Grassmann manifold, as well as the bilinearity in the penalty caused by the subspace bases and coefficients. Nevertheless, numerical experiments verify that the proposed algorithm, which provides elegant solutions to the sub-problems in each step, is able to de-couple the subspaces and pursue each of them under time-efficient parallel computation.
Constructing the L2-Graph for Robust Subspace Learning and Subspace Clustering

Abstract:Under the framework of graph-based learning, the key to robust subspace clustering and subspace learning is to obtain a good similarity graph that eliminates the effects of errors and retains only connections between the data points from the same subspace (i.e., intrasubspace data points). Recent works achieve good performance by modeling errors into their objective functions to remove the errors from the inputs. However, these approaches face the limitations that the structure of errors should be known prior and a complex convex problem must be solved. In this paper, we present a novel method to eliminate the effects of the errors from the projection space (representation) rather than from the input space. We first prove that $\boldsymbol {\ell }_{\boldsymbol {1}}$ -, $\boldsymbol {\ell }_{\boldsymbol {2}}$ -, $\boldsymbol {\ell }_{\boldsymbol {\infty }}$ -, and nuclear-norm-based linear projection spaces share the property of intrasubspace projection dominance, i.e., the coefficients over intrasubspace data points are larger than those over intersubspace data points. Based on this property, we introduce a method to construct a sparse similarity graph, called L2-graph. The subspace clustering and subspace learning algorithms are developed upon L2-graph. We conduct comprehensive experiment on subspace learning, image clustering, and motion segmentation and consider several quantitative benchmarks classification/clustering accuracy, normalized mutual information, and running time. Results show that L2-graph outperforms many state-of-the-art methods in our experiments, including L1-graph, low rank representation (LRR), and latent LRR, least square regression, sparse subspace clustering, and locally linear representation.

Univ., Yaroslavl’ 1980, 64–85, 161] introduced the index of a Riemannian symmetric space as the minimal codimension of a (proper) totally geodesic submanifold. He calculated the index for symmetric spaces of rank ≤ 2 {\leq 2} , but for higher rank it was unclear how to tackle the problem. In [J. Berndt, S. Console and C. E. Abstract:Representing image sets as subspaces on Grassmann manifold and leveraging the Riemannian geometry of this space has proven to be highly effective in various visual recognition tasks. However, the computational cost associated with operating on Riemannian manifolds, especially of high-dimensional ones, poses a significant limitation to the applicability of existing techniques. Moreover, the image sets with labels are scarce and valuable in real-world scenarios, where the manual annotation is time-consuming and costly. To tackle these issues, in this paper, we propose an unsupervised Grassmannian dimensionality reduction method for image set classification and clustering, which simultaneously performs local structure learning and dimensionality reduction under the subspace view. Specifically, instead of relying on the pre-defined similarity matrix that obtained from raw data and may contain much noise, we adaptively learn the local structures from the projected low-dimensional Grassmann manifold. The refined structures then provide more discriminative power to learn the accurate manifold-to-manifold mapping. To better preserve the global structure of the data, this mapping is constrained to satisfy the orthogonal condition. In addition, our model can be compatible with F-norm OLPP for Grassmann manifold when the squared F-norm is transformed into projection metric. A re-weighted iterative scheme is carefully developed to optimize the problem. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets for image set classification and clustering tasks clearly demonstrate that our model consistently outperforms baselines, yielding significant improvements.

Click-through-based Subspace Learning for Image Search

Abstract:One of the fundamental problems in image search is to rank image documents according to a given textual query. We address two limitations of the existing image search engines in this paper. First, there is no straightforward way of comparing textual keywords with visual image content. Image search engines therefore highly depend on the surrounding texts, which are often noisy or too few to accurately describe the image content. Second, ranking functions are trained on query-image pairs labeled by human labelers, making the annotation intellectually expensive and thus cannot be scaled~up. We demonstrate that the above two fundamental challenges can be mitigated by jointly exploring the subspace learning and the use of click-through data. The former aims to create a latent subspace with the ability in comparing information from the original incomparable views (i.e., textual and visual views), while the latter explores the largely available and freely accessible click-through data (i.e., "crowdsourced" human intelligence) for understanding query. Specifically, we investigate a series of click-through-based subspace learning techniques (CSL) for image search. We conduct experiments on MSR-Bing Grand Challenge and the final evaluation performance achieves DCG @25=0.47225. Moreover, the feature dimension is significantly reduced by several orders of magnitude (e.g., from thousands to tens).

Abstract:Annotating images with tags is useful for indexing and retrieving images. However, many available annotation data include missing or inaccurate annotations. In this paper, we propose an image annotation framework which sequentially performs tag completion and refinement. We utilize the subspace property of data via sparse subspace clustering for tag completion. Then we propose a novel matrix completion model for tag refinement, integrating visual correlation, semantic correlation and the novelly studied property of complex errors. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on multiple benchmark datasets even when they contain certain levels of annotation noise.
