Abstract:Some geometric behaviours of complete solutions to mean curvature flow before the singularities occur are studied. The author obtains the estimates of the rate of the distance between two fixed points and the derivatives of the second fundamental form. Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of finding closed hypersurfaces with prescribed Weingarten curvature in a large class of Riemannian manifolds. Under some sufficient conditions, we obtain an existence result by establishing a priori estimates and standard degree theory for the admissible solutions to the prescribed curvature equation. We mainly show that the primary technique developed in Urbas, Wang and the second author’s work in 2004 is flexible enough to be used in more general ambient geometry.

Abstract:The paper introduces the spirality character of the almost fiber part for a closed essentially immersed subsurface of a closed orientable aspherical 3-manifold, which generalizes an invariant due to Rubinstein and Wang. The subsurface is virtually embedded if and only if the almost fiber part is aspiral, and in this case, the subsurface is virtually a leaf of a taut foliation. Besides other consequences, examples are exhibited that non-geometric 3-manifolds with no Seifert fibered pieces may contain essentially immersed but not virtually embedded closed subsurfaces.

Abstract:We describe the S 1 -action on the Quot-scheme Quot(E n ) associated to the trivial bundle E n = CP 1 × C n . In particlular, the topology of the S 1 -fixed-point components in Quot(E n ) and the S 1 -weights of the normal bundle of these components are worked out. Mirror Principle, as developed by three of the current authors in the series of work [L-L-Y1, I, II, III, IV], is a method for studying certain intersection numbers on a stable map moduli space. As an application, in Mirror Principle III, Sec 5.4, an outline was given in the case of genus zero with target a flag manifold. The results on S 1 fixed points in this paper are used here to do explicit Mirror Principle computations in the case of Grassmannian manifolds. In fact, Mirror Principle computations involve only a certain distinguished subcollection of the S 1 -fixed-point components. These components are identified and are labelled by Young tableaus. The S 1 -equivariant Euler class eS1 of the normal bundle to these components is computed. A diagrammatic rule that allows one to write down eS1 directly from the Young tableau is given. From this, the aforementioned intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable maps can be worked out. Two examples are given to illustrate our method. Using our method, the A-model for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in a Grassmannian manifold can now also be computed explicitly. This work is motivated by the intention to provide further details of mirror principle and to understand the relation of mirror principle to physical theory. Some related questions are listed for further study.

Abstract:We study the real Monge-Ampère equation in two and three dimensions, bothfrom the point of view of the SYZ conjecture, where solutions give rise tosemi-flat Calabi-Yau's and in affine differential geometry, where solutionsyield parabolic affine sphere hypersurfaces. We find explicit examples, connectthe holomorphic function representation to Hitchin's description of specialLagrangian moduli space, and construct the developing map explicitly for asingularity corresponding to the type I_n elliptic fiber (afterhyper-Kähler rotation). Following Baues and Cortés, we show that varioustypes of metric cones over two-dimensional elliptic affine spheres generatesolutions of the Monge-Ampère equation in three dimensions. We then prove alocal and global existence theorem for an elliptic affine two-sphere metricwith prescribed singularities. The metric cone over the two-sphere minus threepoints yields a parabolic affine sphere with singularities along a "Y"-shapedlocus. This gives a semi-flat Calabi-Yau metric in a neighborhood of the "Y"vertex. In the erratum, we correct a gap in the solution of the elliptic affinesphere equation (with the small caveat that a parameter in the equation, thecubic differential, must be smaller than we assumed before). The new proofstill allows us to construct semi-flat Calabi-Yau metrics in a neighborhood ofthe "Y" vertex by appealing to the result of Baues-Cortés. We also give analternate construction of such semi-flat Calabi-Yau metrics by using a resulton hyperbolic affine spheres due to the first author.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth. However, the constructed sublattices are not normal in general.

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed submanifold with parallel mean curvature in Sn+p, (h) over tilde, it the trace free part of the second fundamental form, and (sigma) over tilde (u) = parallel to(h) over tilde (u, u)parallel to(2) for any unit vector u is an element of TM. We prove that there exists a positive constant C(n, p, H) (>= 1/3) such that if (sigma) over tilde (u) <= C(n. p, H), then either (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to 0 and M is a totally umbilical sphere, or (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H). A geometrical classification of closed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature satisfying (sigma) over tilde (u) equivalent to C(n, p, H) is also given. Our main result is an extension of the Gauchman theorem [4].

Abstract:In this paper we define a Moebius invariant metric and a Moebius invariant second fundamental form for submanifolds in double-struck S signn and show that in case of a hypersurface with n ≥ 4 they determine the hypersurface up to Moebius transformations. Using these Moebius invariants we calculate the first variation of the moebius volume functional. We show that any minimal surface in double-struck S signn is also Moebius minimal and that the image in double-struck S signn of any minimal surface in ℝn unter the inverse of a stereographic projection is also Moebius minimal. Finally we use the relations between Moebius invariants to classify all surfaces in double-struck S sign3 with vanishing Moebius form.

Abstract:In this paper, it is shown that for any closed orientable 3-manifold with positive simplicial volume, the growth of the Seifert volume of its finite covers is faster than the linear rate. In particular, each closed orientable 3-manifold with positive simplicial volume has virtually positive Seifert volume. The result reveals certain fundamental difference between the representation volume of the hyperbolic type and the Seifert type. The proof is based on developments and reactions of recent results on virtual domination and on virtual representation volumes of 3-manifolds.

Abstract:The chapter discusses the equivariant loop theorem for three-dimensional manifolds that is needed in settling the Smith conjecture and reviews the existence theorems for minimal surfaces. The equivariant version of the loop theorem says that there are a finite number of properly embedded disks in M that satisfy the required properties. The loop theorem respects the action of the group G in a suitable manner. The chapter puts a metric on M so that the group G acts isometrically and so that ∂M is convex with respect to the outward normal. Then with respect to this metric, the existence of an immersed disk D1 is demonstrated, in M whose boundary ∂ D1, represents a nontrivial element in π1(S) and whose area is minimal among all such disks. The chapter describes Morrey's solution for the plateau problem in a general Riemannian manifold. The existence theorem for manifolds with boundary proves that M is homogeneously regular if M is a subdomain of another homogeneously regular manifold N that has no boundary.

Abstract:For hypersurfaces with regular Weingarten operator in nonflat space forms we study the relations between the intrinsic geometry of the third fundamental form metric and the extrinsic geometry of the hypersurface. We prove a theorema-egregium-type result for this metric and, in particular, give a local classification of hypersurfaces in case of an Einstein structure of this metric.
