Abstract:The author gives a characterization of counterexamples to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on smooth projective surfaces in positive characteristic.More precisely,it is reproved that if there is a counterexample to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on a smooth projective surface X in positive characteristic,then X is either a quasi-elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension 1 or a surface of general type.Furthermore,it is proved that up to blow-ups,X admits a fibration to a smooth projective curve,such that each fiber is a singular curve.

Abstract:We prove that the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on rational surfaces in positive characteristic by means of the lifting property to W 2 ( k ) of certain log pairs on smooth rational surfaces. As a corollary, the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem holds on log del Pezzo surfaces in positive characteristic.

Abstract:We show that the anti-canonical bundle of any $\mathbb Q$-factorial surface is numerically effective if and only if it is pseudo-effective. To prove this, we establish a numerical non-vanishing theorem for surfaces polarized with pseudo-effective divisors. The latter answers a question of C. Fontanari.

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish an L-2-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hrmander's L-2 estimates. Abstract:We show that the Bogomolov-Sommese vanishing theorem holds for a log canonical projective surface in large characteristic unless the Iitaka dimension of the round-down of the log canonical divisor is not equal to two. As an application, we prove that a log resolution of a pair of a normal projective surface and a reduced divisor in large characteristic lifts to the ring of Witt vectors when the Iitaka dimension of the log canonical divisor is less than or equal to zero. Moreover, we give explicit and optimal bounds on the characteristic unless their Iitaka dimensions are equal to zero.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.
Effective Fujita-type theorems for surfaces in arbitrary characteristic

Abstract:Fujita's conjecture is known to be false in positive characteristic. However, if $X$ is a smooth projective variety over a field of positive characteristic and $L$ is an ample divisor on $X$, it is an open question whether linear systems of the form $\lvert K_X+aK_X+bL \rvert$ can be made basepoint-free or very ample with $a$ and $b$ only depending on the dimension of $X$. We conjecture that such $a$ and $b$ exist and prove a strong version of this conjecture for basepoint-freeness, very ampleness, and jet ampleness on smooth projective surfaces in arbitrary characteristic. We do not use the classification of surfaces. In positive characteristic, we prove these positivity properties hold for Schwede's canonical linear system $S^0(X,\omega_X \otimes \mathcal{O}_X(aK_X+bL))$. To prove these results, we prove new results on Seshadri constants, moving Seshadri constants, and Frobenius-Seshadri constants, which in the singular case are new even over the complex numbers.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

Abstract:We prove that for any prime number $p\ge 3$, there exists a positive number $\kappa_p$ such that $\chi(\mathcal{O}_X)\ge \kappa_pc_1^2$ holds true for all algebraic surfaces $X$ of general type in characteristic $p$. In particular, $\chi(\mathcal{O}_X)>0$. This answers a question of N. Shepherd-Barron when $p\ge 3$.

Abstract:We use the liftability of the relative Frobenius morphism of toric varieties and the strong liftability of toric varieties to prove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata–Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties in positive characteristic. These results generalize those results of Danilov, Buch–Thomsen–Lauritzen–Mehta, Mustaţǎ and Fujino to the case where concerned Weil divisors are not necessarily torus invariant.

Abstract:We introduce tools for transferring nonnegativity certificates for global sections between line bundles on real algebraic surfaces. As applications, we improve Hilbert's degree bounds on sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative ternary forms, give a complete characterization of nonnegative real forms of del Pezzo surfaces, and establish quadratic upper bounds for the degrees of sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative forms on real ruled surfaces.
