Abstract:Geometric relationships governing multiple images of points and lines and associated algorithms have been studied to a large extent separately in multiple-view geometry. The previous studies led to a characterization based on multilinear constraints, which have been extensively used for structure and motion recovery, feature matching and image transfer. In this paper we present a universal rank condition on the so-called multiple-view matrix M for arbitrarily combined point and line features across multiple views. The condition gives rise to a complete set of constraints among multiple images. All previously known multilinear constraints become simple instantiations of the new condition. In particular, the relationship between bilinear, trilinear and quadrilinear constraints can be clearly revealed from this new approach. The theory enables us to carry out global geometric analysis for multiple images, as well as systematically characterize all degenerate configurations, without breaking image sequence into pairwise or triple-wise sets of views. This global treatment allows us to utilize all incidence conditions governing all features in all images simultaneously for a consistent recovery of motion and structure from multiple views. In particular, a rank-based multiple-view factorization algorithm for motion and structure recovery is derived from the rank condition. Simulation results are presented to validate the multiple-view matrix based approach.

Abstract:In this paper, the geometry of a general class of projections from R-n to R-k (k < n) is examined, as a generalization of classic multiple view geometry in computer vision. It is shown that geometric constraints that govern multiple images of hyperplanes in R-n, as well as any incidence conditions among these hyperplanes (such as inclusion, intersection, and restriction), can be systematically captured through certain rank conditions on the so-called multiple view matrix. All constraints known or unknown in computer vision for the projection from R-3 to R-2 are simply instances of this result. It certainly simplifies current efforts to extending classic multiple view geometry to dynamical scenes. It also reveals that since most new constraints in spaces of higher dimension are nonlinear, the rank conditions are a natural replacement for the traditional multilinear analysis. We also demonstrate that the rank conditions encode extremely rich information about dynamical scenes and they give rise to fundamental criteria for purposes such as stereopsis in n-dimensional space, segmentation of dynamical features, detection of spatial and temporal formations, and rejection of occluding T-junctions.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a general framework for analyzing the numerical conditioning of minimal problems in multiple view geometry, using tools from computational algebra and Riemannian geometry. Special motivation comes from the fact that relative pose estimation, based on standard 5-point or 7-point Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithms, can fail even when no outliers are present and there is enough data to support a hypothesis. We argue that these cases arise due to the intrinsic instability of the 5- and 7-point minimal problems. We apply our framework to characterize the instabilities, both in terms of the world scenes that lead to infinite condition number, and directly in terms of ill-conditioned image data. The approach produces computational tests for assessing the condition number before solving the minimal problem. Lastly synthetic and real data experiments suggest that RANSAC serves not only to remove outliers, but also to select for well-conditioned image data, as predicted by our theory.

Abstract:Motivated by Witten’s work, we propose a K -theoretic Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence which relates the GL Verlinde numbers to the K -theoretic quasimap invariants of the Grassmannian. We recover these two types of invariants by imposing different stability conditions on the gauged linear sigma model associated with the Grassmannian. We construct two families of stability conditions connecting the two theories and prove two wall-crossing results. We confirm the Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence in the rank two case.

Abstract:Correspondences estimation or feature matching is a key step in the image-based 3D reconstruction problem. In this paper, we propose two algebraic properties for correspondences. The first is a rank deficient matrix construct from the correspondences of at least nine key-points on two images (two-view correspondences) and the second is also another rank deficient matrix built from the other correspondences of six key-points on at least five images (multi-view correspondences). To our knowledge, there are no theoretical results for multi-view correspondences prior to this paper. To obtain accurate correspondences, multi-view correspondences seem to be more useful than two-view correspondences. From these two algebraic properties, we propose an refinement algorithm for correspondences. This algorithm is a combination of correspondences refinement, outliers recognition and missing key-points recovery. Real experiments from the project of reconstructing Buddha statue show that the proposed refinement algorithm can reduce the average error from 77 pixels to 55 pixels on the correspondences estimation. This drop is substantial and it validates our results.

Abstract:Given $7 \leq k \leq 9$ points $(x_i,y_i) \in \mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^2$, we characterize rank deficiency of the $k \times 9$ matrix $Z_k$ with rows $x_i^\top \otimes y_i^\top$, in terms of the geometry of the point sets $\{x_i\}$ and $\{y_i\}$. This problem arises in the conditioning of certain well-known reconstruction algorithms in computer vision, but has surprising connections to classical algebraic geometry via the interplay of quadric surfaces, cubic curves and Cremona transformations. The characterization of rank deficiency of $Z_k$, when $k \leq 6$, was completed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.09826" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.09826">arXiv:2301.09826</a>.

Abstract:The warping matrix has been defined for knot projections and knot diagrams by using warping degrees. In particular, the warping matrix of a knot diagram represents the knot diagram uniquely. In this paper we show that the rank of the warping matrix is one greater than the crossing number. We also discuss the linearly independence of knot diagrams by considering the warping incidence matrix.

Abstract:This note presents insights on the Jordan structure of a matrix which are derived from an extension of the I(1) and I(2) conditions in Johansen (1996). It is first observed that these conditions not only characterize, as it is well known, the size (1 or 2) of the largest Jordan block in the Jordan form of the companion matrix but more generally the geometric multiplicities, the algebraic multiplicities and the whole Jordan structure for eigenvalues of index 1 or 2. In the context of the Granger representation theorem, this means that the Johansen rank conditions do more than determine the order of integration of the process. It is then shown that an extension of these conditions leads to the characterization of the Jordan structure of any matrix.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis course presents the state of the art in multiple-view geometry, including methods and algorithms for reconstructing 3-D geometric models of scenes from video or photographs. This course is based on a novel approach to multiple-view geometry that only requires linear algebra, as opposed to more involved projective and algebraic geometry that most current methods employ. This new approach aims to make image-based modeling techniques accessible to a larger audience compared to existing ones. The presentations will be based on a recent Springer-Verlag textbook on 3D vision (coauthored by the course organizers). Matlab code for the algorithms will be made available at the book website.

A Constraint Violation Suppressing Formulation for Spatial Multibody Dynamics with Singular Mass Matrix

Abstract:The constraint violation problem of spatial multibody systems is analyzed in this paper. The mass matrix is singular in the equations of motion when the Euler parameters with the normalization constraints are used to describe the orientation of the spatial rigid body. The constrained and weighted least-squares-based geometrical projection method is implemented to suppress the constraint violation during numerical integration, and the explicit correction formulation can be obtained by the block matrix inversion scheme. The mass matrix weighted correction formulation gives the physically consistent energy norm, but it needs the mass matrix to be positive definite. To extend the physically consistent correction formulation for solving spatial multibody systems' constraint violation problems with a singular mass matrix, a Modified Mass-Orthogonal Projection Method (MMOPM) and a Generalized Physical Orthogonal Projection Method (GPOPM) are proposed. MMOPM modifies the mass matrix directly by adding a penalty factor matrix which appears in the mass-orthogonal projection method and leads to a positive definite weight matrix that satisfies the block matrix inversion scheme condition. GPOPM is a generalization of the physical orthogonal projection method where the constrained least-squares method is weighted by the positive semi-definite mass matrix and the correction formulation is given by using the generalized block matrix inversion scheme. Numerical results show the feasibility and accuracy of the presented MMOPM and GPOPM. The constraints in position and velocity can reach machine precision during numerical integration. The elimination of violation of position constrains may require few iterations, while the violation of velocity constraints is removed in one step, and GPOPM is more accurate in velocity correction than MMOPM.
