Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:The author presents an alternate proof of the Bismut-Zhang localization formula of ηinvariants, when the target manifold is a sphere, by using ideas of mod k index theory instead of the difficult analytic localization techniques of Bismut-Lebeau. As a consequence, it is shown that the R/Z part of the analytically defined ηinvariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer for a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional closed spin manifold can be expressed purely geometrically through a stable Chern-Simons current on a higher dimensional sphere. As a preliminary application, the author discusses the relation with the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer R/Z index theorem for unitary flat vector bundles, and proves an R refinement in the case where the Dirac operator is replaced by the Signature operator.
On distance estimates for complete manifolds with lower scalar curvature bounds

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the distance estimate problem on complete manifolds with compact boundary and with lower scalar curvature bounds. On these manifolds, relative to a background manifold with nonnegative curvature operator, we introduce a definition of the relative index of relative Gromov-Lawson pairs via a deformed Dirac operator trick in \cite{Zh20}. We prove that the relative index coincides with the index of associated Callias operators of the relative Gromov-Lawson pairs. As applications, we prove a short neck inequality with uniformly positive scalar curvature and the corresponding quantitative shielding result with nonnegative scalar curvature. Moreover, we generalize the concept of relative $\widehat{A}$-area in \cite{CZ24} to complete manifolds with compact boundary and then investigate width estimates of geodesic collar neighborhoods.

Abstract:We apply the Riemannian Penrose inequality and the Riemannian positive mass theorem to derive inequalities on the boundary of a class of compact Riemannian 3-manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature. The boundary of such a manifold has a CMC component, i.e., a 2-sphere with positive constant mean curvature; and the rest of the boundary, if nonempty, consists of closed minimal surfaces. A key step in our proof is the construction of a collar extension that is inspired by the method of Mantoulidis-Schoen.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive from the supersymmetry of the Witten Laplacian Brascamp-Lieb's type inequalities for general differential forms on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary. In addition to the supersymmetry, our results essentially follow from suitable decompositions of the quadratic forms associated with the Neumann and Dirichlet self-adjoint realizations of the Witten Laplacian. They moreover imply the usual Brascamp-Lieb's inequality and its generalization to compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary.

Abstract:A classic result of Shi and Tam states that a 2-sphere of positive Gauss and mean curvature bounding a compact 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, must have total mean curvature not greater than that of the isometric embedding into Euclidean 3-space, with equality only for domains in this reference manifold. We generalize this result to 2-tori of Guass curvature greater than $-1$, which bound a compact 3-manifold having scalar curvature not less than $-6$ and at least one other boundary component satisfying a 'trapping condition'. The conclusion is that the total weighted mean curvature is not greater than that of an isometric embedding into the Kottler manifold, with equality only for domains in this space. Examples are given to show that the assumption of a secondary boundary component cannot be removed. The result gives a positive mass theorem for the static Brown-York mass of tori, in analogy to the Shi-Tam positivity of the standard Brown-York mass, and represents the first such quasi-local mass positivity result for non-spherical surfaces. Furthermore, we prove a Penrose-type inequality in this setting.

Local Index Theory for Lorentzian Manifolds

Abstract:Index theory for Lorentzian Dirac operators is a young subject with significant differences to elliptic index theory. It is based on microlocal analysis instead of standard elliptic theory and one of the main features is that a nontrivial index is caused by topologically nontrivial dynamics rather than nontrivial topology of the base manifold. In this paper we establish a local index formula for Lorentzian Dirac-type operators on globally hyperbolic spacetimes. This local formula implies an index theorem for general Dirac-type operators on spatially compact spacetimes with Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions on Cauchy hypersurfaces. This is significantly more general than the previously known theorems that require the compatibility of the connection with Clifford multiplication and the spatial Dirac operator on the Cauchy hypersurface to be selfadjoint with respect to a positive definite inner product.

Local structure theory of Einstein manifolds with boundary

Abstract:We study local structure of the moduli space of compact Einstein metrics with respect to the boundary conformal metric and mean curvature. In dimension three, we confirm M. Anderson's conjecture in a strong sense, showing that the map from Einstein metrics to such boundary data is generically a local diffeomorphism. In dimensions greater than three, we obtain similar results for Ricci flat metrics and negative Einstein metrics under new non-degenerate boundary conditions.

Static manifolds with boundary: Their geometry and some uniqueness theorems

Abstract:Static manifolds with boundary were recently introduced to mathematics. This kind of manifolds appears naturally in the prescribed scalar curvature problem on manifolds with boundary, when the mean curvature of the boundary is also prescribed. They are also interesting from the point of view of General Relativity. For example, the (time-slice of the) photon sphere on the Riemannian Schwarzschild manifold splits it into static manifolds with boundary. In this paper we prove a number of theorems, which relate the topology and geometry of a given static manifold with boundary to some properties of the zero-level set of its potential (such as connectedness and closedness). Also, we characterize the round ball in the Euclidean 3-space with standard potential as the only scalar-flat static manifold with mean-convex boundary, whose zero-level set of the potential has Morse index one. This result follows from a general isoperimetric inequality for 3-dimensional static manifolds with boundary, whose zero-level set of the potential has Morse index one. Finally, we prove some uniqueness theorem for the domains bounded by the photon sphere on the Riemannian Schwarzschild manifold.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop the geometry of the limit spaces of compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary, where we assume lower bounds on the sectional curvatures of manifolds and boundaries and the second fundamental forms of boundaries and an upper diameter bound. We mainly focus on the general case of non inradius collapse/convergence, where inradii of manifolds are uniformly bounded away from <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://zero.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> this case, many limit spaces have wild geometry, which arise from the boundary behavior of manifolds. Abstract:We give examples of spin $4$-manifolds with boundary that do not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature and nonnegative mean curvature. These manifolds in fact have the stronger property that the conformal Laplacian with appropriate boundary conditions is never positive. The obstruction to the positivity of the conformal Laplacian is given by a real-valued $\xi$-invariant associated to the APS theorem for the twisted Dirac operator. We use analytic techniques related to the prescribed scalar curvature problem in conformal geometry to move beyond earlier work where the metric is a product near the boundary.

Abstract:Consider a compact Riemannian manifold in dimension $n$ with strictly convex boundary. We show the local invertibility near a boundary point of the transverse ray transform of $2$ tensors for $n\geq 3$ and the mixed ray transform of $2+2$ tensors for $n=3$. When the manifold admits a strictly convex function, this local invertibility result leads to global invertibility.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a relatively compact $C^2$ domain in a complex manifold $\mathcal M$ of dimension $n$. Assume that $H^{1}(M,\Theta)=0$ where $\Theta$ is the sheaf of germs of holomorphic tangent fields of $M$. Suppose that the Levi-form of the boundary of $M$ has at least 3 negative eigenvalues or at least $n-1$ positive eigenvalues pointwise. We will first construct a homotopy formula for $\Theta$-valued $(0,1)$-forms on $\overline M$. We then apply a Nash-Moser iteration scheme to show that if a formally integrable almost complex structure of the Hölder-Zygmund class $\Lambda^r$ on $\overline M$ is sufficiently close to the complex structure on $ M$ in the Hölder-Zygmund norm $\Lambda^{r_0}(\overline M)$ for some $r_0>5/2$, then there is a diffeomorphism $F$ from $\overline M$ into $\mathcal M$ that transforms the almost complex structure into the complex structure on $F(M)$, where $F \in \Lambda^s(M)$ for all $s<r+1/2$.

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Boris Vertman on refined analytic torsion for manifolds with boundary, in this paper we extend the construction of the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion to manifolds with boundary. We also compare it with the refined analytic torsion on manifolds with boundary. As a byproduct of the gluing formula for refined analytic torsion and the comparison theorem for the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion and the refined analytic torsion, we establish the gluing formula for the Cappell-Miller analytic torsion in the case that the Hermitian metric is flat.

Abstract:Consider a compact Riemannian manifold in dimension $n\geq 3$ with strictly convex boundary. We show that the transverse ray transform of $1$ tensors and the mixed ray transform of $1+1$ tensors are invertible, up to natural obstructions, near a boundary point. When the manifold admits a strictly convex function, this local invertibility result leads to a global result by a layer stripping argument.

Abstract:In this paper we use stable capillary surfaces (analogous to the $\mu$-bubble construction) to study manifolds with strictly mean convex boundary and nonnegative scalar curvature. We give an obstruction to filling 2-manifolds by such 3-manifolds based on the Urysohn width. We also obtain a bandwidth estimate and establish other geometric properties of such manifolds.
