Abstract:We prove an index theorem concerning the pushforward of flat B-vector bundles, where B is an appropriate algebra. We construct the associated analytic torsion form T. If Z is a smooth closed aspherical manifold, we show that T gives invariants of the homotopy groups of Diff(Z).

Abstract:In this thesis, we consider geometric properties of vector bundles arising from algebraic and Hermitian geometry. On vector bundles in algebraic geometry, such as ample, nef and globally generated vector bundles, we are able to construct positive Hermitian metrics in different senses(e.g. Griffiths-positive, Nakano-positive and dual-Nakano-positive) by L2-method and deduce many new vanishing theorems for them by analytic method instead of the Le Potier-Leray spectral sequence method. On Hermitian manifolds, we find that the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. We can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and also for complex vector bundles over Hermitian manifolds by their second Ricci curvature tensors. We also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:For a complex flat vector bundle over a fibered manifold, we consider the 1-parameter family of certain deformed sub-signature operators introduced by Ma-Zhang in [Math. Ann. 340: 569–624, 340]. We compute the adiabatic limit of the Bismut-Freed connection associated to this family and show that the Bismut-Lott analytic torsion form shows up naturally under this procedure.

Abstract:We define real-valued characteristic classes of flat complex vector bundles, and flat real vector bundles with a duality structure. We construct pushforwards of such vector bundles with vanishing characteristic classes. These pushforwards involve the analytic torsion form in the first case and the eta form of the signature operator in the second case. We show that the pushforwards are independent of the geometric choices made in the constructions and hence are topological in nature. We give evidence that in the first case, the pushforwards are given topologically by the Becker-Gottlieb-Dold transfer.

Abstract:We prove the smoothness of the L^2-analytic torsion form on some fiber bundles with non-compact fibers of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We do so by generalizing the arguments of Azzali-Goette-Schick to an appropriate Sobolev space, and proving that the Novikov-Shubin invariant remains positive in the Sobolev settings, using an argument of Alvarez Lopez-Kordyukov.

Abstract:We introduce volume forms on mapping stacks in derived algebraic geometry using a parametrized version of the Reidemeister-Turaev torsion. In the case of derived loop stacks we describe this volume form in terms of the Todd class. In the case of mapping stacks from surfaces, we compare it to the symplectic volume form. As an application of these ideas, we construct canonical orientation data for cohomological DT invariants of closed oriented 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a discrete finitely generated group. Let $\hat{M}\to T$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant fibration, with fibers diffeomorphic to a fixed even dimensional manifold with boundary $Z$. We assume that $\Gamma\to \hat{M}\to \hat{M}/\Gamma$ is a Galois covering of a compact manifold with boundary. Let $(D^+ (\theta))_{\theta\in T}$ be a $\Gamma$-equivariant family of Dirac-type operators. Under the assumption that the boundary family is $L^2$-invertible, we define an index class in the K-theory of the cross-product algebra, $K_0 (C^0 (T)\rtimes_r \Gamma)$. If, in addition, $\Gamma$ is of polynomial growth, we define higher indeces by pairing the index class with suitable cyclic cocycles. Our main result is then a formula for these higher indeces: the structure of the formula is as in the seminal work of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer, with an interior geometric contribution and a boundary contribution in the form of a higher eta invariant associated to the boundary family. Under similar assumptions we extend our theorem to any $G$-proper manifold, with $G$ an étale groupoid. We employ this generalization in order to establish a higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index formula on certain foliations with boundary. Fundamental to our work is a suitable generalization of Melrose $b$-pseudodifferential calculus as well as the superconnection proof of the index theorem on $G$-proper manifolds recently given by Gorokhovsky and Lott.

Abstract:Comparing invariants from both topological and geometric perspectives is a key focus in index theorem. This paper compares higher analytic and topological torsions and establishes a version of the higher Cheeger-Müller/Bismut-Zhang theorem. In fact, Bismut-Goette achieved this comparison assuming the existence of fiberwise Morse functions satisfying the fiberwise Thom-Smale transversality condition (TS condition). To fully generalize the theorem, we should remove this assumption. Notably, unlike fiberwise Morse functions, fiberwise generalized Morse functions (GMFs) always exist, we extend Bismut-Goette's setup by considering a fibration $ M \to S $ with a unitarily flat complex bundle $ F \to M $ and a fiberwise GMF $ f $, while retaining the TS condition. Compared to Bismut-Goette's work, handling birth-death points for a generalized Morse function poses a key difficulty. To address this, first, by the work of the author M.P., joint with Zhang and Zhu, we focus on a relative version of the theorem. Here, analytic and topological torsions are normalized by subtracting their corresponding torsions for trivial bundles. Next, using new techniques from by the author J.Y., we excise a small neighborhood around the locus where $f$ has birth-death points. This reduces the problem to Bismut-Goette's settings (or its version with boundaries) via a Witten-type deformation. However, new difficulties arise from very singular critical points during this <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://deformation.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address these, we extend methods from Bismut-Lebeau, using Agmon estimates for noncompact manifolds developed by Dai and J.Y.

Abstract:On an odd-dimensional oriented hyperbolic manifold of finite volume with strongly acyclic coefficient systems, we derive a formula relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification of the manifold. In a companion paper, this formula is used to derive exponential growth of torsion in cohomology of arithmetic groups.

Abstract:We study the boundary behavior of the invariant of $K3^{[2]}$-type manifolds with antisymplectic involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion. We show the algebraicity of the singularity of the invariant by using the asymptotic of equivariant Quillen metrics and equivariant $L^2$-metrics. We prove that, in some cases, the invariant coincides with Yoshikawa's invariant for 2-elementary K3 surfaces. Hence, in these cases, our invariant is expressed as the Petersson norm of a Borcherds product and a Siegel modular form.

Abstract:We consider smooth vector bundles over smooth manifolds equipped with non-smooth geometric data. For nilpotent differential operators acting on these bundles, we show that the kernels of induced Hodge-Dirac-type operators remain isomorphic under uniform perturbations of the geometric data. We consider applications of this to the Hodge-Dirac operator on differential forms induced by so-called rough Riemannian metrics, which can be of only measurable coefficient in regularity, on both compact and non-compact settings. As a consequence, we show that the kernel of the associated non-smooth Hodge-Dirac operator with respect to a rough Riemannian metric remains isomorphic to smooth and singular cohomology when the underlying manifold is compact.

Abstract:A Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi is a crepant resolution of the quotient of a hyperkähler 4-fold by an antisymplectic involution. In this paper, we compare two different types of holomorphic torsion invariants; one is the BCOV invariant of the Calabi-Yau 4-fold of Camere-Garbagnati-Mongardi, and the other is the invariant of the corresponding $K3^{[2]}$-type manifold with involution introduced by the author in the preceding papers. As an application, in some special cases, we show that the BCOV invariant of those Calabi-Yau 4-folds is expressed as the Petersson norm of a certain Borcherds product.

Abstract:In [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2008.04625" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.04625">arXiv:2008.04625</a>] the authors constructed a classifying space for polystable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact Kähler manifold using analytic GIT theory. The aim of this article is to show that this classifying space taken in the weakly normal category is a coarse moduli space in the sense of complex geometry when the topology is fixed as induced by the space of Hermite-Einstein connections modulo the group of unitary gauge transformations.

Abstract:For any finite abelian group G, the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of C^r/G can be viewed as a certain kind of abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals. In this note, we use Tseng's orbifold quantum Riemann-Roch theorem to express this kind of abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals as a sum over Feynman graphs, where the weight of each graph is expressed in terms of descendant integrals over moduli spaces of stable curves and representations of G. This expression will play a crucial role in the proof of the remodeling conjecture (arXiv:0709.1453, arXiv:0807.0597) for affine toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifolds in arXiv:1310.4818.
Post-Lie Algebra Structure of Manifolds with Constant Curvature and Torsion

Abstract:For a general affine connection with parallel torsion and curvature, we show that a post-Lie algebra structure exists on its space of vector fields, generalizing previous results for flat connections. However, for non-flat connections, the vector fields alone are not enough, as the presence of curvature also necessitates that we include endomorphisms corresponding to infinitesimal actions of the holonomy group. We give details on the universal Lie algebra of this post-Lie algebra and give applications for solving differential equations on manifolds.

Abstract:We show that any continuous $\mathbf{C}$-linear Lie algebra splitting of the symbol map from the Atiyah algebra of a vector bundle on a complex manifold is given by a differential operator of order at most the rank of the bundle plus one. Bundles equipped with such a splitting can be thought of as \emph{infinitesimally equivariant} bundles, and our theorem implies these are, in a certain sense, in a categorical formal neighbourhood of vector bundles with a flat connection.

Abstract:Hypersymplectic structures with torsion on Lie algebroids are investigated. We show that each hypersymplectic structure with torsion on a Lie algebroid determines three Nijenhuis morphisms. From a contravariant point of view, these structures are twisted Poisson structures. We prove the existence of a one-to-one correspondence between hypersymplectic structures with torsion and hyperkähler structures with torsion. We show that given a Lie algebroid with a hypersymplectic structure with torsion, the deformation of the Lie algebroid structure by any of the transition morphisms does not affect the hypersymplectic structure with torsion. We also show that if a triplet of $2$-forms is a hypersymplectic structure with torsion on a Lie algebroid $A$, then the triplet of the inverse bivectors is a hypersymplectic structure with torsion for a certain Lie algebroid structure on the dual $A^*$, and conversely. Examples of hypersymplectic structures with torsion are included.

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:Conventional wisdom dictates that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ factors in the integral cohomology group $H^p(X_n, \mathbb{Z})$ of a compact manifold $X_n$ cannot be computed via smooth $p$-forms. We revisit this lore in light of the dimensional reduction of string theory on $X_n$, endowed with a $G$-structure metric that leads to a supersymmetric EFT. If massive $p$-form eigenmodes of the Laplacian enter the EFT, then torsion cycles coupling to them will have a non-trivial smeared delta form, that is an EFT long-wavelength description of $p$-form currents of the $(n-p)$-cycles of $X_n$. We conjecture that, whenever torsion cycles are calibrated, their linking number can be computed via their smeared delta forms. From the EFT viewpoint, a torsion factor in cohomology corresponds to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry realised by a Stückelberg-like action, and calibrated torsion cycles to BPS objects that source the massive fields involved in it.
