Abstract:Bentonite was widely used in water-base drilling fluids. The influence of carbon ash on the rheological properties of bentonite dispersions was investigated in this paper. Different measurements (particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, rheology, density and fluid loss) were used to study the mechanism of carbon ash in adjusting the rheological properties of bentonite dispersions. The rheological properties were determined as a function of the carbon ash concentrations according to the Herschel–Bulkley model. The experimental results indicated that the carbon ash adsorbed on the external surface of bentonite particles improved the dispersion of bentonite in the water-base drilling fluids. The investigated carbon ash salt-resistance and stability demonstrated that carbon ash had the excellent capacity to adjust the rheological properties of bentonite dispersions.

Abstract:The influence of bentonite as a suspending agent on the processing and performance of the final enamel product was studied with the aim of prolonging the service life of enamel. The suspension stability of the glaze slurry was also evaluated, and the influence of the layered structure of bentonite on the suspension was explored. In addition, the effect of bentonite on the flexural strength and fracture toughness of enamel coatings on metal substrates was investigated. Finally, acid corrosion resistance experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of bentonite on the corrosion performance of the enamel coating. The results showed that the stability of the glaze slurry and mechanical properties of the enamel products were significantly improved by adding 1 wt% bentonite to the glaze slurry. The addition of 0.5 wt% bentonite was optimal for enhancing the acid corrosion resistance of the enamel. This study provides a useful reference for improving the quality of enamel products and prolonging their service life.

Study on the Surface-Physicochemical-Property Changing of Bentonite by Adapting a New Soil Stabilizer

Abstract:In this paper, a new soil stabilizer (Tung oil-based sulfonated) is developed and applied to improve the properties of Ca-bentonite. The differences of specific surface area, fractal dimension and micro geometric morphology between raw Ca-bentonite samples and modified ones are investigated based on the data acquired from water vapor, nitrogen adsorption experiments and SEM experiments. Results show that the SSA including external SSA and total SSA of treated samples decrease largely and apparently when compared to that of the raw samples. Furthermore, the higher volume ratio between soil stabilizer and water, the more decrease in SSA. Compared to the ones of raw Cabentonite, the external SSA and total SSA of the modified Ca-bentonite samples decrease by 48.5% and 25.2%, respectively, when the volume ratio was 1:50. This result implies that the connection of montmorillonite particles becomes more tightly after the treatment by the soil stabilizer. In addition, an obvious decreasing trend is found in fractal dimension by analysis of water vapor adsorption isotherms. This finding indicates that the pore surface tends to be smoother by the chemical action among particles bonds, more condensable in aggregates and shorter space between the interlayer of montmorillonite. SEM results display that the new soil stabilizer developed a quantity of lamellar aggregates but did not change the structure of montmorillonite. Based on all mentioned above, the results of fractal dimension analysis are verified. Consequently, this study shows that the new soil stabilizer (Tung oil-based sulfonated) has obvious effects on improving the physicochemical properties of bentonite. The findings of this study further indicate that the mechanic behavior of bentonite could be improved by adapting this new soil stabilizer.

Abstract:With crylic salts,bentonite,agar etc as raw materials,Water retaining agent were prepared by microwave assisted method.The microscopic features of the composite was characterized by XRD and IR.The influences such as the amount of bentonite,crosslinker,neutralization degree,and agar concentration on water absorbency were discussed.The results showed that there are strong chemical interactions of ionic crosslinking polymerization between bentonite,agar and monomer.the absorbancy of the composite to water and 0. 9% NaCl solution is 588. 6g/g and 112. 8g/g respectively.

Abstract:Motivated by understanding the stability-enhanced mechanism of bentonite on cement-based materials for promoting its application as a low-cost viscosity modifying admixture (VMA), binary bentonite-water and ternary cement-bentonite-water systems were prepared by a simple way in this article, then the interaction between cement slurry and (Li+, Na+, Ca2+) bentonite was analyzed by chemical analysis, XRD, XRF, XPS, and SEM. The results indicated that the interlayer ions of bentonite paly as important roles in improving the stability of fresh cement slurry, and the related performance of Ca2+ bentonite can be improved by introducing Li+; When cement/(Li+, Na+, Ca2+) bentonite systems were separated from water and dried, respectively, all bentonites almost returned to their original ordered structures and tended to form Ca2+ bentonite; and the effect of bentonite on the stability of cement slurry and its influencing mechanism were proposed.

Abstract:The utilization of greens resources is a grand challenge for this century. A lot of efforts are paid to substitute toxic ingredients of the conventional drilling mud system with nontoxic natural materials. In this paper, the effect of the natural polymer chitosan on the rheology and stability of sodium-bentonite drilling mud was investigated in the polymer concentration range of 0.1–3.0 wt.%. Both the shear and time dependent rheological properties of pure chitosan, pure bentonite and bentonite–chitosan dispersions were studied. Moreover, zeta potential measurements were used to evaluate the stability of bentonite-chitosan suspension. Adding chitosan improved the natural properties of drilling mud, namely: yield stress, shear thinning, and thixotropy. The viscosity of bentonite suspension increased significantly upon the addition of chitosan in the concentration range of 0.5 to 3.0 wt.% forming network structure, which can be attributed to the interactions of hydrogen bonding between -OH clusters on the bentonite surface with the NH group in the chitosan structure. On the other hand, dispersed chitosan–bentonite suspension was observed at low chitosan concentration (less than 0.5 wt.%). Increasing both bentonite and chitosan concentrations led to the flocculation of the bentonite suspension, forming a continuous gel structure that was characterized by noteworthy yield stress. The desired drilling mud rheological behavior can be obtained with less bentonite by adding chitosan polymer and the undesirable effects of high solid clay concentration can be avoided.

Abstract:Recently, conventional viscosifiers exhibit limited effectiveness under deep formations due to their poor salt tolerance and low thermal resistance. To address the limitations, a thermo-responsive macromonomer (DAM) consisting of N,N-diethylacrylamide and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide was copolymerized with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate and chemically modified nano-silica (N-np) to obtain an effective thermo-thickening/Nano-SiO 2 polymer composite (N-DPAM) via in-situ polymerization under optimal conditions. The molecular structure of N-DPAM was analyzed by FTIR and 1 H NMR, while rheological and rheometric responses under high temperature, salt dosages, and shear resistance were investigated. The rheometric results demonstrated that DPAM exhibits a viscosity increase of 235% from 65 to 160 °C, but rapidly decreased at 180 °C, whereas N-DPAM displayed stabilized thickening responses of 218% above 160 °C due to intercalation and self-assembly of N-np within the polymer matrix as temperature increases. The viscosity retention rate (VRR) at a high shear rate of 1021 s −1 and 200 °C indicated that the solution viscosity of N-DPAM was observed at 55 mPa s, which is 13 times higher compared to DPAM solution at 4 mPa s. From the rheological results, the VRR of N-DPAM fluid observed at 68% was slightly lower than that of HE300 at 73%, a commercially available viscosity additive in a salt-free environment at 200 °C, but three times higher (63%) than HE300 (25%) in the salt-saturated environment (20% NaCl). Additionally, a study of N-DPAM fluid contaminated by shaly soil from Dagang Oilfield demonstrated excellent compatibility with a filtration control agent to control the viscosity and filtration volumes (< 10 mL) at 200 °C.

Abstract:With the goal of increasing the swelling pressure and lowering the permeability of ordinary sodium bentonite with high concentration cation solutions, the optimum conditions for producing polymerized bentonite (PB) were examined through a series of laboratory tests. Based on the test results, the proposed optimum conditions for using the free radical polymerization are using sodium acrylate as the monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator, pH of 7, the initiator (I) to monomer (M) ratio, I/M, of 0.2 and the monomer content of 10%. Then, the PB produced using the proposed conditions was further investigated on the microstructure and the hydraulic properties. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that the sodium polyacrylate did not modify the interlayer spacing of the bentonite particles, but the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image shows that the PB particles have rounder edge compared with that of the untreated bentonite (UB) particles because the bentonite particles were coated by the polymer. For the hydraulic properties, the results of a swelling pressure test show that with comparable initial dry density, PB had higher swelling pressure than that of the UB. Under the identical void ratio, the PB had much lower permeability (k) than that of the UB with aggressive 0.6 M NaCl and 0.6MCaCl2 solutions. Based on the test results, the PB produced using the proposed conditions can be used as a barrier material against high concentration cation solutions. The proposed optimum condition can be a useful guideline for further investigations on the other properties of the PB.

Abstract:The distinctive properties of bentonite such as hydration, swelling, water absorption, ion adsorption, high viscosity, and thixotropy make it a valuable material for many applications in geotechnical engineering such as hydraulic barriers, drilling slurry, and landfill liners. Many additives such as cement, hay fiber, and polymer have been used to enhance the engineering performance of bentonite slurry, which are proved in respected research. This study introduces gellan gum as a friendly environmental additive that improves bentonite slurry stability when bentonite is used for hydraulic barriers/walls. The bentonite was treated with different gellan gum concentration as 0% (untreated); 2%; 3%; 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% to the mass of distilled water. A series of unconfined compression tests were conducted on gellan gum – bentonite mixture. The test results show the effect of gellan gum on the unconfined compressive strength of bentonite slurry in initial and thermal curing conditions.

Abstract:Foam and slurry are important materials for preventing spewing of the earth pressure balance (EPB) shields, but their interaction at the interface level is not entirely understood. Herein, an anionic surfactant was used to foam bentonite slurry with a concentration of 10–30 wt%. The mechanism of the slurry on the foamability of the surfactant and the bubbles stability were analysed through surface viscoelastic modulus, ζ-potential, FT-IR, surface tension, contact angle, and microscopic observation. The results show that the bentonite slurry forms a stable three-dimensional grid structure, which increases the surface tension and free energy required for the formation of the gas–water interface. Surfactants are adsorbed on the bound water layer on the surface of bentonite particles. This increases both the electrostatic repulsion of system and the hydrophobicity of the particle and forms a multi-layered gas–water interface with high viscoelasticity, thus slowing down the drainage, coarsening, and coalescence.

Thermoresponsive Bentonite for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Abstract:As an important industrial material, bentonite has been widely applied in water-based drilling fluids to create mud cakes to protect boreholes. However, the common mud cake is porous, and it is difficult to reduce the filtration of a drilling fluid at high temperature. Therefore, this paper endowed bentonite with a thermo response via the insertion of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomers. The interaction between NIPAM monomers and bentonite was investigated via Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), isothermal adsorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) at various temperatures. The results demonstrate that chemical adsorption is involved in the adsorption process of NIPAM monomers on bentonite, and the adsorption of NIPAM monomers accords with the D-R model. With increasing temperature, more adsorption water was squeezed out of the composite when the temperature of the composite exceeded 70 °C. Based on the composite of NIPAM and bentonite, a mud cake was prepared using low-viscosity polyanionic cellulose (Lv-PAC) and initiator potassium peroxydisulfate (KPS). The change in the plugging of the mud cake was investigated via environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), contact angle testing, filtration experiments, and linear expansion of the shale at various temperatures. In the plugging of the mud cake, a self-recovery behavior was observed with increasing temperature, and resistance was observed at 110 °C. The rheology of the drilling fluid was stable in the alterative temperature zone (70-110 °C). Based on the high resistance of the basic drilling fluid, a high-density drilling fluid (ρ = 2.0 g/cm3) was prepared with weighting materials with the objective of drilling high-temperature formations. By using a high-density drilling fluid, the hydration expansion of shale was reduced by half at 110 °C in comparison with common bentonite drilling fluid. In addition, the rheology of the high-density drilling fluid tended to be stable, and a self-recovery behavior was observed.

Abstract:The property of bentonite and its application in the treatment of oil field wastewater are introduced.Modified bentonite can be used as adsorbent to remove oil,hydrocarbon and its derivatives, COD,polymer and surfactant from oil-field wastewater.Modified bentonite loaded with metal oxide has a synergetic effect on photocatalytic oxidation,which can improve its capability of degrading organic substances in oil field wastewater.Bentonite can be compacted to clay membrane under high pressure, which has a certain effect of retaining inorganic ions in oil-field wastewater.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the hydromechanical behaviour and the clay polymer interaction of amended Ca-bentonite. Specimens were formed by mixing Ca-bentonite with two soluble polyelectrolyte polymer powders. Some important parameters are studied: swelling, water adsorption and hydraulic performance for landfill applications. Tests are performed with tap water and synthetic leachate (SL) to reproduce the hydrochemical phenomena. Hydraulic performance tests were performed with an oedopermeameter. Tests results show that polymers tend to reduce the permeability when in contact with the SL. Water adsorption and free swell index tests confirmed that adsorption, swelling and permeability parameters depend on the clay polymer mixtures and that adding polymers improves the clay properties. Each polymer’s charges has a different effect: the anionic polymer gives low permeability to the mixture, and the cationic polymer enhances the bentonite swell ability and water retention, which can be used also as a performance index.

Abstract:The current study focuses on the artificial modification of natural bentonite using pulping sodium, stacking sodium, extrusion sodium, wheel rolling sodium, and microwave sodium treatments. The effects of these methods on the physical and chemical properties of bentonite are investigated. The results indicate that the wheel rolling sodium treatment, which features the effects of extrusion and kneading, facilitated maximum separation and sodium treatment of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in the lattice of bentonite. This method produced highly efficient Ca-bentonite with full modification. When the wheel rolling sodium treatment was performed for 60 min, the modified bentonite exhibited a colloid index of 300 mL/3 g, swelling value of 275 mL/2 g, swelling volume of 94 mL/g, and 2 h water absorption of 755%. The modified bentonite has desirable cohesiveness, dilatability, suspension property, dispersibility, and high physical and chemical performances, which are suitable for use as iron ore concentrate pallet and casting bentonite binders.
