Abstract:In a reaction system using water as the main solvent, the stable TiO2 nanocrystal sol was synthesized under the mild conditions of atmospheric pressure and low temperature (70 degrees C) through the improved sol-gel method with controlling tetrabutyl titanate to fully hydrolyze and slowly polymerize. TiO2/bentonite composite photocatalytic material was further prepared by the loading of TiO2 nanocrystal sol on the surface of bentonite. XRD, SEM and BET were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities were also investigated. The results show that the large water addition amount is conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanocrystals. When the molar ratio of deionized water to tetrabutyl titanate is higher than 167:1, the anatase TiO2 nanocrystals appear in the sol system. TiO2 nanocrystals are mainly loaded on the surface of bentonite rather than being embedded into the structure between bentonite layers. However, compared with a pure bentonite, the TiO2 loading significantly increases the specific surface area of the material. When the molar ratio of deionized water to tetrabutyl titanate is 192:1, the composite photocatalytic material shows the highest photocatalytic activity under UV light, and the degradation rate to methylene blue can reach 93.8%.

Abstract:Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) emulsion particles with positive charges on the surface were synthesized by emulsion polymerization using cationic surfactant octotyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (OTAC) as emulsifier. The suspension of montmorillonite was slowly dropped into the emulsion. Through the interaction between the negative charges on the montmorillonite layers and the cations on the surface of poly (styrene-acrylonitrile) particles, the montmorillonite layers and emulsion particles could assemble and absorb on each other by themselves. The change of δ voltage and particle size of the emulsion during the process of dropping was characterized, which demonstrated that the emulsion particles and montmorillonite layers absorbed on each other by the electrovalent bond and an intersectional structure was formed in the complex emulsion. Poly (styrene-acrylonitrile)/montmorillonite nanocomposite was obtained after coagulation. The structure of nanocomposite was characterized with XRD and TEM. The results indicated that montmorillonite was exfoliated into layers with a thickness of several nanometers and uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix.

Abstract:This paper concerns on synthesis of nanocomposites consisting of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and clays. Two types of clays were regenerated organobentonite and commercial organobentonite. PLA and clays were melt extruded using single-screw extruder. The extruded compound was pelletized, then hot pressed using compression molding machine. Regenerated organobentonite was obtained from regeneration of spent bleaching earth (SBE) using solvent extraction and oxidation method. Afterwards, regenerated SBE modified by organic compound. While, commercial organobentonite was directly modified of commercial bentonite using organic compound. In this study, nanocomposites were prepared with varying compositions of clays from 0% to 5% (by weight). Experimental results show that partially exfoliated nanocomposites structure was shown by X-ray diffraction analyses. In addition, the effect of clays on morphology structure, mechanical, barrier, and biodegradable properties were analyzed. The utilization of clays in nanocomposite increases mechanical properties at low clay compositions. Furthermore, PLA-clay nanocomposites show better barrier and biodegradable properties compared to that of the neat PLA.
Study on the Preparation of Low Cost Organoclay from Low-Level Ca-bentonite

Abstract:The organic bentonites were prepared with the low-level Ca-bentonites obtained from Jianping, Liaoning province. By means of orthogonal experiment, the optimal conditions of organic bentonites preparation are 20 g natural bentonite, 6.25 g CTMAB, 150 mL water, stirring time 3 hours, and standing time 2 days. XRD shows that the d001 value of modified bentonite has increased from 1.5286 nm to 2.1567 nm, TG-DTA and FT-IR prove that organic modifiers have entered into the interlayers of the bentonites. A hydrophobic and lipophilic analysis of the modified bentonites was made. By one time modified technics, the traditional technics of organoclay preparation only by cation exchange reaction of Na-montorillonite with quaternary ammonium salt organic cation (HDTMA) are innovated and the cost of the organoclay preparation is greatly reduced.

Abstract:The requirements for drilling bentonites are tightening due to ever-increasing demands for petroleum resources, coupled with cost and reaction technology constraints. In addition to raising the risk of drilling, bentonite's poor performance also raises the possibility of safety incidents and significant financial losses. Organically modified bentonites effectively reduce the consumption of drilling fluids, conserve resources, and lessen environmental effects. This paper aims to provide an overview of the several organic modification methods of bentonite for drilling fluids. It also evaluates the characteristics and application impacts of bentonite. We primarily describe the three popular modification methods represented by intercalation, coupling, and grafting. Also, this review provides the effect of molecular simulation on the investigation of structure in microconfined conditions. Through microlearning, organically modified bentonite with exceptional performance is to be further developed.

Abstract:Bentonite is a naturally occurring material with planar nanocomposite, which is widely modified through intercalated processes to form multifunctional sorbents. The bentonite-based sorbents are highly attracted to abate organic pollutants in environments due to environmental-friendly, high-efficiency and cost-effective. Recently, the progress in sorption mechanisms of modified-bentonite, which are highlighted in this review, has been made to extend their environmental applications. The recent applications in abating of organic pollutants are briefly summarized, including wasterwater treatment, air pollution control, contaminated soil remediation, and preparation of clay-based environmental catalyst. The potential research areas are also prospected.

Abstract:Chitosan is an important kind of biomaterial that is widely used in medical applications. One of the key concerns about its use is the preparation of composites used for bone engineering. Aim of this study concerns the preparation of three-dimensional nanocomposites having potential use in bone repair and regeneration. The magnetite/hydroxyapatite/chitosan nanocomposites were prepared via in situ compositing method by preparing precursor solutions and molds with chitosan membrane. These nanocomposites were characterized by chemical, spectroscopic, magnetic, and morphological methods. X-ray diffraction analysis results demonstrate the formation of magnetite and hydroxyapatite in the chitosan matrix. FTIR analysis indicates that inorganic nanoparticles were chemically bound to the amino and hydroxyl groups in CS molecules. From TG/DTA data, it can be concluded that during preparation raw materials were almost perfectly incorporated into the nanocomposites, and the decrease in decomposition temperatures indicates the formation of chemical bonds between inorganic nanoparticles and chitosan molecules. TEM results show that the maximum size of inorganic particles in the magnetite /hydroxyapatite/chitosan nanocomposites was under 50 nm, and these particles were dispersed homogeneously in the chitosan matrix. From the magnetic measurement, it could be concluded that the nanocomposites were superparamagnetic, which is also the peculiarity of nanomagnetites. (c) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
A new method for the preparation of modified bentonite used in organic wastewater treatment

Abstract:A set of organic bentonite preparation means different from traditional technology was proposed,and the COD(chemical oxygen demand)and XRD(X-ray diffraction)double indicators were used for the first time to measure the synthetic effect of organic bentonite.COD tests showed that the selection of the appropriate type and the amount of modifier made up two prerequisites for preparing organic bentonite used in organic wastewater treatment.As two kinds of modifiers,both solid di-octadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride from Shanxi and solid esterquat from Henan were suitable for preparing organic bentonite used in organic wastewater treatment.XRD analysis demonstrated that the d001 value of montmorillonite mineral was increased from 1.251 nm to 3.373 nm after the modification of bentonite by di-octadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride,whereas the d001 value of montmorillonite mineral was increased from 1.251 nm to 5.103 nm through the modification by esterquat.The d001 value of montmorillonite in the new preparation process of organic bentonite increased significantly,and long-chain molecules of organic modifier had been inserted between layers of montmorillonite minerals,which indicated that the synthetic effect was good.The new synthesis process of organic bentonite can eliminate the need for filtering,washing,drying,grinding and other steps,thus significantly reducing energy consumption and production cost,and can also effectively promote the large-scale application of organic bentonite in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid materials like bone, shells, and teeth can be found in nature, which are usually composed of biomacromolecules and nanoscale inorganic ingredients. Synergy of organic-inorganic components in hybrid materials render them outstanding and versatile performance. Chitosan is commonly used organic materials in bionic hybrid materials since its bioactive properties and could be controllable tailored by various means to meet complex conditions in different applications. Among these fabrication means, hybridization was favored for its convenience and efficiency. This review discusses three kinds of chitosan-based hybrid materials: hybridized with hydroxyapatite, calcium carbonate, and clay respectively, which are the representative of phosphate, carbonate, and hydrous aluminosilicates. Here, we reported the latest developments of the preparation methods, composition, structure and applications of these bioactive hybrid materials, especially in the biomedical field. Despite the great progress was made in bioactive organic-inorganic hybrid materials based on chitosan, some challenges and specific directions are still proposed for future development in this review.

Abstract:Bentonite is an important clay for preparation of adsorbents for potential treatment of industrial effluents. However, due to its natural occurrence as fine particles and swelling after moisture absorption, bentonite is difficult to be separated from the liquid for regeneration purpose, which limits its application in effluent treatment. In this study, two different bentonite-polypropylene composites were synthesized, i.e., with and without pore-enlarging treatment. They both showed strong ability to resist hydraulic agitation damage with a small breakage rate in water. The obtained results from SEM and XRD characterization revealed that the compounding of bentonite with the polypropylene was a physical process, and the structural characteristics of bentonite particles were maintained in the new products. The granular composite adsorbents were effective in removing Pb2+ in aqueous solution. The suggested pore-enlarging treatment was verified as a successful operation to increase greatly the adsorption rate of contaminants on the granular bentonite composite.

Abstract:Inorganic compounds with sulfur have a good antifungal efficacy. However there is a limit, sulfur is required in bulk quantities for application. Nanosulfur might have a high anti-bacterial effect in a thin concentration. Nanosulfur-bentonite composite was prepared from nanosulfur made by the reaction between sodium thiosulfate and sulfuric acid and bentonite was used as a carrier. The most appropriate reaction temperature, concentrations of Na2S2O3 5H2O and H2SO4, dropping rate and stirring one were determined. From SEM images, it was illuminated that small particle size of nanosulfur deposited on bentonite is in the range of 20-30nm and big one is in the range of 60-100nm.

Modified Conditions of Organobentonite for Adsorbing Organic Contaminants

Abstract:Organobentonite was synthesized by placing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) surfactants into montmorillonite layer in bentonite. The factors affecting the capacity of organobentonite for adsorbing such organic contaminants as phenol, aniline, benzene, toluene and xylene from refuse percolate were investigated, and the laws governing the adsorption of organic contaminants are summarized. It is shown that the key factor affecting the adsorption of organic contaminants by organobentonite is the amount of the modification reagent. When the amount of modification reagent is identical, the ability of organobentonite with Na is obviously better than that of 6% directly-modified organobentonite, and the influence of organobentonite prepared by heat treatment on adsorbing organic contaminants is different from that prepared by acid treatment. The organobentonite can be used to build liner of landfill.
