Abstract:In a reaction system using water as the main solvent, the stable TiO2 nanocrystal sol was synthesized under the mild conditions of atmospheric pressure and low temperature (70 degrees C) through the improved sol-gel method with controlling tetrabutyl titanate to fully hydrolyze and slowly polymerize. TiO2/bentonite composite photocatalytic material was further prepared by the loading of TiO2 nanocrystal sol on the surface of bentonite. XRD, SEM and BET were adopted to analyze the structure and morphology of as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities were also investigated. The results show that the large water addition amount is conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanocrystals. When the molar ratio of deionized water to tetrabutyl titanate is higher than 167:1, the anatase TiO2 nanocrystals appear in the sol system. TiO2 nanocrystals are mainly loaded on the surface of bentonite rather than being embedded into the structure between bentonite layers. However, compared with a pure bentonite, the TiO2 loading significantly increases the specific surface area of the material. When the molar ratio of deionized water to tetrabutyl titanate is 192:1, the composite photocatalytic material shows the highest photocatalytic activity under UV light, and the degradation rate to methylene blue can reach 93.8%.
In Situ Polymerization of Poly(methyl Methacrylate)/clay Nanocomposites in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared using a pseudo-dispersion polymerization of MMA monomer in the presence of fluorinated surfactant-modified clay (10F-clay) in supercritical carbon dioxide. The nanocomposites are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis and show partially exfoliated/interealated structures as well as enhanced thermal stabilities, glass transition temperatures, and mechanical properties. It is also found that 10F-clay served not only as an inorganic filler but also as an effective stabilizer for PMMA polymerization in CO2. The nature of the stabilizing mechanisms is inferred from FTIR studies. This CO2-mediated route allows for a clean synthesis of nanocomposites with high yields without the need for extra surfactant to stabilize the system.

Abstract:The current study investigates the production of organoclay suitable for use in the base section of a passenger tire with a cap/base tread construction. The process involved the purification and modification of two types of sodium bentonite clay with different mineral characteristics and ion exchange capacities using a single-step process. The modification process of purified bentonite suspensions was performed using a two-tailed long-chain alkyl quaternary ammonium salt surfactant, namely di (hydrogenated tallow alkyl) dimethyl ammonium chloride (AD 2 HT), and two one-tailed long-chain alkyl quaternary ammonium salt surfactants, namely cetyl-trimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and octadecylamine chloride (ODA), in relatively low amounts of surfactant (0.95 CEC), along with polyethylene glycol (4% clay) as an auxiliary modifier. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the interlayer spacing of organoclays significantly increases. In addition, the XRD pattern depends on the kind of surfactant and is independent of the type of bentonite clay. The resulting organoclays were added to the tread base section of a passenger tire using the melt masterbatch technique along with a silane coupling agent. An increase in curing maximum torque (8–15%), curing delta torque (6–14%), hardness (2–10%), static modulus 300 (2–18%), and dynamic storage modulus (11–30%) of the rubber composites was observed without significant change of resilience and loss factor of the composite at 2 Phr of organoclay loadings. The organoclays based on the AD 2 HT modifier exhibited better mechanical properties than those based on the ODA and CTAC surfactants. The dynamic storage modulus of composites increased by about 30% with only 2 Phr of AD 2 HT-modified bentonites. Furthermore, the performance of the organoclay was found to be independent of the primary particle size, iron content, and ion exchange capacity of the bentonite clay within the studied range.

Abstract:This paper concerns on synthesis of nanocomposites consisting of Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and clays. Two types of clays were regenerated organobentonite and commercial organobentonite. PLA and clays were melt extruded using single-screw extruder. The extruded compound was pelletized, then hot pressed using compression molding machine. Regenerated organobentonite was obtained from regeneration of spent bleaching earth (SBE) using solvent extraction and oxidation method. Afterwards, regenerated SBE modified by organic compound. While, commercial organobentonite was directly modified of commercial bentonite using organic compound. In this study, nanocomposites were prepared with varying compositions of clays from 0% to 5% (by weight). Experimental results show that partially exfoliated nanocomposites structure was shown by X-ray diffraction analyses. In addition, the effect of clays on morphology structure, mechanical, barrier, and biodegradable properties were analyzed. The utilization of clays in nanocomposite increases mechanical properties at low clay compositions. Furthermore, PLA-clay nanocomposites show better barrier and biodegradable properties compared to that of the neat PLA.

Abstract:This study was performed to evaluate the adsorptive properties of bentonite. Natural bentonite was found to adsorb considerable amounts of Salicylic acid (SA) after modification by hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA). Batch studies investigated the adsorptive properties of the modified natural bentonite (organobentonite). The characterization results show the increase in the d 001 spacing from 1.13 to 1.53 nm for raw bentonite and organobentonite, respectively. The FTIR analysis indicates the asymmetric vs. (CH 2 ) and symmetric vs. (CH 2 ) stretching modes for clay loaded with surfactant molecules are 2919 and 2845 cm −1 , respectively. We investigate parameters such as contact time, pH, temperature, and initial concentration. Desorption and regeneration were also studied. The kinetic analysis shows that the adsorption equilibrium of salicylic acid onto organoclay was reached after 120 min and fits well to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model with the contribution of intraparticular diffusion. In addition, the adjustment of the isothermal models indicated that the Langmuir-Freundlich model best fit the isotherms data for unmodified bentonite and the Langmuir model for modified bentonite. The maximum adsorption capacity of organobentonite is 128 mg g −1 at 25 °C. According to the statistical physics model, the SA could be adsorbed on the surface of organoclay in a non-parallel orientation. The desorption-regeneration investigation revealed that the material could be successfully reused for three cycles of SA adsorption. Mechanistic studies of SA sorption on organobentonite have highlighted several mechanisms: hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and hydrophobic interaction.

Abstract:The development of adsorption purification technology in industry is divorced from research in the development of new methods for the synthesis and modification of composites, while the efficiency of the adsorbent directly depends on its structural and surface properties. Currently, there is an increasing demand for hydrogel adsorbents used in pharmaceuticals, medicine, and the chemical industry for wastewater treatment. Dash-Salakhlinsky bentonite, a natural clay mineral and activated carbon of the BAU-A brand, was used as an object of study. By intercalation of bentonite with activated carbon, a bentonite-coal composite was obtained. Grinding equipment of medium energy density was used: roller-ring vibrating mill VM-4. Activation time was 15 min. The average particle size of the initial bentonite and bentonite-carbon composite was determined by laser diffraction on a particle size analyzer. During mechanical activation of bentonite, the nature of the distribution of particles indicates the predominant process of aggregation over grinding. The morphology, structure, and textural properties of the composite were studied by the methods of low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption and IR spectroscopy. An increase in the specific surface area and porosity after mechanochemical activation as compared to the calculated values indicates the interaction between the components. IR spectroscopy established the formation of additional functional groups that can act as active centers, which positively affects the adsorption properties. It is shown that the bentonite-charcoal composite has a high sorption activity with respect to the brilliant green dye. The data obtained can be useful in the development of effective sorbents for wastewater treatment from pollution by organic compounds, as well as in medicine and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:A multi-mesopores composite has successfully been synthesized from natural montmorillonite and tetraethoxysilane. Two templating surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and polyethylene glycol, have been employed in basic hydrothermal conditions in order to shape the pores in the composite. The N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra and thermal analysis were used to obtain the detailed information of the porous structures. And the mechanism for the formation of this mesoporous silica-clay composite has been discussed. The results show that part of the walls of mesopores are originated from montmorillonite layers whose crystalline structure and required thickness benefit the stability of the sample. Moreover, as the infrared spectra revealed, the amorphous hydrolysate of tetraethoxysilane bonds with montmorillonite layers tightly. The resultant silica-clay has large specific surface area (472 m 2 /g) and its porous structure could resist the thermal treatment up to 900 °C, which makes it a potentially host material for catalysts.

Abstract:Polymer clay nanocomposites, which can exhibit many superior properties compared to virgin polymers, have gained increasing interest and importance in recent years. This study aimed to prepare composites of two organoclays with unusual ratios and different degrees of lyophilicity with low-density polyethylene and compare their textural structures and thermal and mechanical properties with those of virgin polymer. For this purpose, firstly, organoclays, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic organoclays (OC and SOC), were prepared by solution intercalation method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with and without addition of a hydrocarbon substance. Then, using both organoclays, polyethylene organoclay composites were prepared and characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Additionally, tensile and hardness tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties of the composites, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms were taken to examine their thermal behavior. XRD patterns and HRTEM images of hydrophobic and superhydrophobic organoclays and the composites show that the characteristic smectite peak of the clay shifts to the left and expands, that is, the interlayer space widens and, in the composites, it deforms immediately at low clay ratios. HRTEM images of the composites prepared especially with low clay ratios indicate that a heterogeneous dispersion of clay platelets occurs, indicating that nanocomposite formation has been achieved. On the contrary, in the composites prepared with high clay ratios, this dispersion behavior partially turns into aggregation. In the composites prepared using up to 20% by weight of superhydrophobic organoclay, extremely stable and continuous improvements in all mechanical properties were observed compared to those of the composites prepared using hydrophobic organoclay. This indicates that by using superhydrophobic organoclay, a ductile nanocomposite of polyethylene containing inorganic components in much higher than usual proportions can be prepared.

Abstract:In this paper we present a fast, new and easy method for the preparation of bentonite-g-poly(acrylate-co-acrylamide) composite material using microwave radiation. The composite has water absorptivity of 1002 g/g while the corresponding copolymer is tacky and has poor gel texture. The relative thermal stability of the composite in comparison with the copolymer was proved via thermogravimetric analysis These results indicate the synergistic effect of the bentonite with the copolymer by increasing water absorptivity and enhancing thermal and mechanical properties of the final gel. Abstract:The objective of this study is to assess the impact of incorporating a dual-functionalized organoclay with amine groups on the morphology and thermal characteristics of nanocomposites based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). To achieve this, organomodified montmorillonite clay (Cloisite30B) underwent treatment with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) via a silanization reaction, aiming to promote better interaction and compatibility between the two components. The structural and thermal properties of the resulting amine-functionalized Cloisite30B (f-C30B) were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Subsequently, various amounts of f-C30B (0, 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, or 10 phr) were dispersed successfully in the ENR matrix using a solvent blending technique to create ENR/f-C30B nanocomposites. Standard techniques, including XRD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and TGA, were employed to analyze the nanocomposites for their structure and morphology. The morphological analysis revealed a uniform distribution of f-C30B throughout the ENR matrix. Moreover, TGA analysis indicated higher decomposition temperatures for ENR with f-C30B: 341 °C, 339 °C, 341 °C, 348 °C, and 352 °C for 1, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 phr f-C30B, respectively, enhancing thermal stability. Char residues also rose accordingly: 2.3%, 1.9%, 3.7%, 4.9%, and 7.8%, respectively. Overall, this study highlights the potential of f-C30B as effective reinforcing agents in ENR-based nanocomposites, offering enhanced thermal stability, homogeneity, and valuable insights for the development of advanced ENR nanocomposites.

Study on the Preparation of Low Cost Organoclay from Low-Level Ca-bentonite

Abstract:The organic bentonites were prepared with the low-level Ca-bentonites obtained from Jianping, Liaoning province. By means of orthogonal experiment, the optimal conditions of organic bentonites preparation are 20 g natural bentonite, 6.25 g CTMAB, 150 mL water, stirring time 3 hours, and standing time 2 days. XRD shows that the d001 value of modified bentonite has increased from 1.5286 nm to 2.1567 nm, TG-DTA and FT-IR prove that organic modifiers have entered into the interlayers of the bentonites. A hydrophobic and lipophilic analysis of the modified bentonites was made. By one time modified technics, the traditional technics of organoclay preparation only by cation exchange reaction of Na-montorillonite with quaternary ammonium salt organic cation (HDTMA) are innovated and the cost of the organoclay preparation is greatly reduced.
Highly Selective Removal of Nitrate and Perchlorate by Organoclay

Abstract:An organoclay was prepared using montmorillonite and hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDPyCl) and tested for the removal of nitrate and perchlorate anions from aqueous solutions. The cationic surfactant modified organoclay was prepared at room temperature using HDPyCl corresponding to 4 times the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of Na-montmorillonite. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the above organoclay showed a large basal spacing of 40.27Å with the intercalation of HDPy cations in the interlayers probably as a result of a paraffin-type bilayer arrangement. The adsorption data of nitrate and perchlorate were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic models to better understand their adsorption mechanisms. The nitrate and perchlorate uptakes by this organoclay could be described well using the Langmuir isotherm while their uptake kinetics fitted well to the pseudo-second order model. The maximum adsorption capacities of nitrate and perchlorate by the organoclay, HDPy-montmorillonite were calculated at 0.67 and 1.11mmolg−1, respectively. Nitrate and perchlorate uptake kinetics were found to be fast as equilibrium was reached within 4h. Furthermore, the uptakes of nitrate and perchlorate by HDPy-montmorillonite were found to be highly selective in the presence of Cl−, SO42− and CO32−, the most abundant naturally occurring anions. Therefore, the HDPy-montmorillonite could be used as a highly efficient adsorbent for the separation of nitrate and perchlorate from drinking or waste water and ground water.

Abstract:Bentonites as part of clays are known for their good adsorption capacities for many contaminants. The group of perfluoroalkyl substances are so‐called forever chemicals, which need to be removed and decomposed. This paper focuses on the preparation and characterization of a new inorganic‐organic bentonite for the removal of perfluoroheptanoic acid. Anthropogenic toxic pollutants are ubiquitous and need to be removed from the environment. This study investigates the preparation of an inorganic‐organic modified clay (organo‐pillared‐clay) for the removal of contaminants. The present work investigates the compositional, structural and sorption properties of modified clay materials for the removal of perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA). The chemical compositions of the clay materials used were determined by interlayer and surface analysis. The results showed changes in interlayer spacing and external surface area due to modification and surfactant addition during the cation exchange reaction. The combination of adsorption and irradiation increased removal efficiency, although photodegradation was partially inhibited. Modified clays show promise for PFHpA remediation, with potential for optimizing photodegradation processes.

Efficient arsenic(V) removal from contaminated water using natural clay and clay composite adsorbents

Abstract:The natural clay is an abundant, accessible, and low-cost material that has the potential for use in the water and wastewater industry. In this paper, Iranian natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite were used to remove toxic arsenic from the liquid environment. The natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The effects of parameters (initial pH, temperature, sorption dose, and contact time) on the efficiency and behavior of the arsenic(V) adsorption process were studied. Freundlich (R2 = 0.945 and 0.989), Langmuir (R2 = 0.922 and 0.931), modified Langmuir (R2 = 0.921 and 0.929), and Dubinin-Radushkevich (R2 = 0.706 and 0.723) models were fitted to evaluate the equilibrium data of arsenic(V) adsorption process by natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite, respectively. The Langmuir adsorption capacity of arsenic(V) by the natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn composite was determined to be 86.86 mg/g and 120.70 mg/g, respectively. The arsenic(V) adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. Negative values of ΔG° and ΔH° showed that the arsenic(V) sorption by the studied materials is thermodynamically spontaneous and exothermic. According to the findings, the natural clay and clay/Fe-Mn are suitable and recyclable sorbents for arsenic(V) adsorption from aqueous solutions. Also, the composite of clay with iron and manganese can improve the efficiency of clay in the removal of arsenic.

Abstract:Copoly(amic acid) was prepared using the diamine monomer N , N ′-[2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-biphenylene]bis(4-aminobenzamide) ( TFAB ) and the anhydride monomers 4,4′-(hexafluoro-isopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride ( 6FDA ) and 4,4′-biphthalic anhydride ( BPA ). Thereafter, a colorless and transparent copoly(amide imide) (Co-CPAI) film was synthesized through various heat treatments. Co-CPAI hybrid films with a TFAB : 6FDA : BPA molar ratio of 1 : 0.5 : 0.5 were subsequently fabricated using organically modified hectorite (STN) with various contents ranging from 0 to 7 wt% via the solution intercalation method. Finally, the thermomechanical properties, clay dispersion, and optical transmittance of the hybrid films were investigated. The results of wide-angle X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated good dispersion at low clay loadings; however, clay agglomeration was observed above a certain critical STN content. At the critical STN content of 3 wt%, the clay was evenly distributed in the matrix with a nanoscale thickness of approximately 10 nm. Hybrid films containing 3 wt% STN showed excellent thermomechanical properties. Beyond this critical clay content, the physical properties of the films decreased because of the agglomeration of excess clay. Regardless of the clay content, however, the optical properties of the hybrid films remained constant, and their yellow indices, which ranged from 2 to 4, indicated excellent colorless transparency.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a major scientific challenge due to their profound impact on public and environmental health. Therefore, studying ways to detoxify PAHs is important. In this research, the adsorption ability of bentonite modified with five surfactants, including amphoteric (cocoamphodiacetate disodium and sodium cocoiminodipropionate) and nonionic (lauramine oxide, cocamide diethanolamine, and alkylpolyglucoside) substances for the adsorption of high-molecular benzo(a)pyrene and low-molecular naphthalene from the PAH group was studied. The bentonite and bentonite-based organoclays were characterized using X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the maximum adsorption of benzo(a)pyrene by organoclays increased compared with the initial mineral. The adsorption of benzo(a)pyrene is higher than that of naphthalene. The adsorption process of benzo(a)pyrene by bentonite and organoclays is predominantly monolayer, as it is better described by the Langmuir model (R2 0.77–0.98), while naphthalene is predominantly multilayer, described by the Freundlich model (R2 0.86–0.96). According to the effectiveness of sorption capacities of organoclays—including the degree of sorption, Langmuir and Freundlich constants, the value of maximum adsorption, Gibbs free energy, and the index of favorability of the adsorption process—the most effective modification was found. For the adsorption of benzo(a)pyrene the best was cocoamphodiacetate disodium, and for naphthalene it was sodium cocoiminodipropionate.

Abstract:Arsenic is a critical contaminant for aqueous environments as it poses harmful health risks. To meet the stringent regulations regarding the presence of arsenic in aqueous solutions, the feasibility of montmorillonite clay modified with hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride as the adsorbent was tested for the removal of arsenic ions from aqueous solutions. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study confirmed that the organically modified nanoclay (ONC) adsorbent had a porous structure with a vast adsorbent surface.The x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis proved the presence of carbon in the structure of the modified nanoclay that can be evidence for the creation of ONC. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis results confirm the existence of four main groups of minerals, carbonate (Calcite), clay (Askmtyt and Kandyt), silicate (Quartz), and phyllosilicate (Kaolinite), in the ONC structure.The influence of various parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, initial arsenite concentration, and contact time on arsenic adsorption onto ONC was investigated. A 25 full factorial central composite experimental design was applied. A central composite design under response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the effects of independent variables on arsenite removal and to determine the optimum condition. The experimental values were in a good fit with the ones predicted by the model. The optimal operating points (adsorbent dosage: 3.7 g L−1, surfactant dosage: 3 g L−1 and the contact time: 37.2min) giving maximum arsenite removal (95.95%) were found using Solver “Add-ins” in Microsoft Excel 2010.
