Abstract:The Rheology of cold water and hot water dissolving parts of Cassia bean gum was respectively discussed. The rheology of Cassia bean gum disssolved part in hot water was different in comparison with that dissolved in cold water.The results showed that the viscosity of Cassia bean gum was affected by its concentration, temperature, shearing, pH, freezing-thawing, salt-concentration et al. Cassia bean gum showed highly synergic with Xanthan gum and Carrageenan, but not synergic with Guar gum.

Abstract:The shear thinning behavior of non-colloidal suspensions is investigated experimentally with emphasis on the effect of surface roughness of suspending particles. The first shear thinning at a low shear-rate is observed, which originates from particle–particle interaction, and the second shear thinning at a high shear rate is also reported as the polymeric solvent shear thins. Due to the decrease of the size of particle clusters, the viscosity of suspensions decreases in the first shear thinning regime. The surface asperities on rough particles hinders the lubricative interaction between close-contact particles suppressing the growth of clusters, and therefore, the first shear thinning behavior weakens. The shielding of the lubricative interaction also prevents the local shear rate enhancement, corresponding to the suppressions second shear thinning and the rising of a second-order first normal stress difference from the polymeric solvent. A theoretical model describing the first shear thinning behavior of non-colloidal suspension is developed, and the predications agree well with experimental data. The roughness effect on dynamic rheological behavior is also investigated.
The Rheological Characters of Surfactant Viscoelastic Solutions at Low Shear Rate

Abstract:Rheological properties of dilute surfactant solutions at low shear rate are investigated using a cone viscometer. The plateau viscosity changing with the shear rate can be separated to three regimes: in regime 1, the viscosity decreases with increase of the shear rate while the shear rate is below a threshold shear rate; in regime 2, the shear rate is above the threshold shear rate and the viscosity tends to a little bit increase as the shear rate is increased; In regime 3, the viscosity gradually decreases again with increase of the shear rate. The influencing factors on its viscosity contain concentration, temperature and the weight ratio of counter ions. Through rotating the solutions at a proper shear rate, a significant change of their viscosity at low shear rate was found: it is characterized by large amplified periodic vibration of the tested viscosity. This large vibration is thought to result from the macro worm-like micelles in the viscoelastic surfactant solutions.

Abstract:The rheological behavior of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) in N,N′=dimethylformamide (DMF), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene (TOL), polystyrene (PS) in DMF, MEK, DCE, THF and cyclohexane (CYH), and random ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer in DCE, TOL, CYH with and without surfactant of Span80 and in the DCE/CYH solvent mixtures with surfactant of Span80 was examined at high dilution. It was shown that the extent and type of the upsweep or downsweep (anomalous rheological behavior) of the reduced viscosity-concentration curves of these different polymers at high dilution are markedly dependent on the dielectric constant of the solvent and the polarity of the polymer used. The experimental results indicated that the anomalous rheological behavior of EVA copolymer, widely used as a flow improver, is related to its efficiency in reducing viscosity and depressing pour point of crude oil and waxy solvents.

Abstract:Concentrated dispersions consisting of 310 nm poly(styrene–ethylacrylate) nanospheres and ethylene glycol, which exhibited pronounced shear-thickening behavior, were prepared in this work. The influence of surfactants on their shear-thickening behavior was investigated, which indicated that the surfactants affected the shear-thickening behavior by changing the surface force and interparticle force. Various surfactants, such as cationic, anionic, nonionic, and zwitterionic surfactants were added to the shear-thickening fluid (STF) and their rheological properties were measured. The results indicated that all kinds of surfactants could enhance shear-thickening behavior by changing their electrostatic, steric, or lubrication interaction, especially for nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). TX100 led to the maximum viscosity up to 1,650 Pa s and CTAB enhanced the maximum viscosity up to 1,000 Pa s when the introduced surfactants were only 2 and 0.3 %, both values were nearly five times larger than the neat STFs. A plausible explanation for the enhancing mechanism by different kinds of surfactants was discussed.

Abstract:Suspension viscosities of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) and CPE-g-vinyl chloride (VC) were determined by use of a definite agitator, which is considered have the same power number Reynolds number relation for various fluid systems. They were correlated with the solid phase fraction and modelled by Mooney and Robinson equations. Critical solid phase fraction was obtained and interrelated with precipitated phase volume in CPE and CPE-g-VC suspension. Linear relationship between them was found.

Abstract:The viscosity enhancement of a solvent produced by the addition of thickening branched polymers is predicted as a function of polymer concentration, branch length and persistence length, and strength of the covalent bonding interactions. Non equilibrium, stationary state Poiseuille numerical simulations are performed using the dissipative particle dynamics model to obtain the viscosity of the fluid. It is found that the clustering of the polymers into aggregates raises the viscosity and that it is more strongly affected by the strength of the bonding interactions. General scaling relationships are found for the viscosity as a function of the variables studied, which are expected to be useful for the design and synthesis of new viscosifying polymers. It is argued that our results can be applied to aqueous thickeners, of importance for colloidal fluids such as paints and coatings, and also for nonpolar fluids such as supercritical CO2, which is a promising non hydraulic fracking fluid also useful in enhanced oil recovery.

Abstract:Engineered rubbery materials in practical applications usually contain nanoparticle and microscopic short fiber while no theories could describe the viscoelasticity of the compounds varying with these two kinds of fillers. We describe how the linear rheology of natural rubber compounds varies with the loading of precipitated silica, short nylon fiber, or both. We for the first time disclose a filler dimension-dependent hydrodynamic-to-non-hydrodynamic transition by applying the time-concentration superposition principle for accounting for the apparent liquid-to-solid transition related to filler composition and loading and the retarded dynamics of the matrix. A framework for simultaneous solving the reinforcement and dissipation of the multi-component compounds is suggested, providing a new perspective on understanding the filling effect for manufacturing high-performance rubber materials.

Abstract:For the concentrated dispersions of epoxy resin prepared by phase inversion emulsification technique, the effects of solid content and temperature on the rheological behavior are studied. It is found that there exists reversible structural transition in concentrated dispersions subjected to shearing. The viscosity oscillation correlated with high viscoelasticity at lower stress is remarkable in highly concentrated dispersions. There exists storage modules overshot at higher stress during the dynamic stress time ramp test. This could provide some information on dynamics of structure changes during shear action. Besides, the effects of solid content and temperature on the relationship between tangent delta and frequency are essentially different.

Abstract:To study the effect of long chain molecule and surface active agent on non-Newtonian fluid properties, rheological experiments on two different fluids have been done. The first group of the fluid is the hydroxyethyl cellulose water solution, and the second is the water solution containing the mixture of dodecyltriethyl ammonium bromide and lauryl sodium sulfate. With the increasing shear rate, shear thinning phenomenon appears in the first group of solution, and a special shear thickening-shear thinning phenomenon appears in the second group. It is considered that the special rheological phenomenon is caused by the difference between the aggregating and the departing speed of the colloidal particles formed in the fluid. The difference between the two speeds relates with the shear rate. The experiment results indicate that the rheological properties can be designed by choosing proper additives at a certain shear rate, and such a fluid with special viscosity variation should be included in the classification of the non-Newtonian fluid.
Tuning the shear and extensional rheology of semi-flexible polyelectrolyte solutions

Abstract:Semi-flexible polyelectrolytes are a group of biopolymers with a wide range of applications from drag reducing agents in turbulent flows to thickening agents in food and cosmetics. In this study, we investigate the rheology of aqueous solutions of xanthan gum as a canonical semi-flexible polyelectrolyte in steady shear and transient extensional flows via torsional rheometry and dripping-onto-substrate (DoS), respectively. The high molecular weight of the xanthan gum and the numerous charged groups on the side branches attached to the backbone allow the shear and extensional rheology of the xanthan gum solutions to be tuned over a wide range by changing the ionic strength of the solvent. In steady shear flow, increasing the xanthan gum concentration increases both the zero shear viscosity and the extent of shear-thinning of the solution. Conversely, increasing the ionic strength of the solvent by addition of sodium chloride (NaCl) decreases both the zero shear viscosity and the level of shear-thinning. In transient extensional flow, increasing the xanthan gum concentration changes the dynamics of the capillary thinning from an inelastic power-law (IP) response to an elastocapillary (EC) balance, from which an extensional relaxation time can be measured based on the rate of filament thinning. Increasing the NaCl concentration decreases the extensional relaxation time and the transient extensional viscosity of the viscoelastic solution. Based on the dynamics of capillary thinning observed in the DoS experiments, we provide a relationship for the smallest extensional relaxation time that can be measured using DoS. We suggest that the change in the dynamics of capillary thinning from an IP response to an EC response can be used as an easy and robust experimental method for identifying the rheologically effective overlap concentration of a semi-flexible polyelectrolyte solution, i.e., the critical concentration at which polymer molecules start to interact with each other to produce a viscoelastic strain-stiffening response (often perceived as "stringiness") in transient extensional flows such as those involved in dripping, dispensing and filling operations.

Abstract:Paste slurry exhibits significant thixotropy, which has a significant influence on the slurry pipeline transportation resistance. This paper proposes a novel test method for the thixotropy of paste slurry, which can ensure that the slurry reaches flow equilibrium during the test. Accordingly, the influences of the solid mass concentration, cement-to-tailings ratio, and temperature on thixotropy were studied by employing a control variable method, and the influences of the above three factors on the stress overshoot and rheological parameters were evaluated. The results revealed that the solid mass concentration and temperature have significant influence on the thixotropy. Moreover, with an increase in the solid mass concentration, the time required for the slurry to reach flow equilibrium decreases. The cement content and temperature are proportional to the significance of the stress overshoot, and the change in dynamic yield stress can be considered an indicator for the effective quantification of thixotropy. In the continuous shearing cycles, the maximum apparent viscosity at the start of shearing significantly decreases on the time axis. The solid mass concentration has a significant influence on the minimum apparent viscosity in the slurry flow process, whereas the cement-to-tailings ratio and temperature have no significant influences.

Abstract:The rheological behavior of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) particles suspensions in glycerine–water mixtures has been investigated by means of steady and dynamic rheometry in this work. The shear rheology of these suspensions demonstrates a strong shear thickening behavior. The variations of shear viscosity with the volume fraction and ratios of glycerine to water are discussed. The effect of volume fraction can be qualitatively explained using a clustering mechanism, which attributes the phenomena to the formation of temporary, hydrodynamic clusters. The influence of interactions between glycerine–water mixtures and PMMA particles on shear thickening is investigated by varying the ratio of glycerine to water. In addition, the reversible and thixotropic properties of suspensions of PMMA dispersed in glycerine–water (3:1) mixtures are also investigated, and the results demonstrate the excellent reversible and thixotropic properties of PMMA particle suspensions.

Abstract:The influences of sodium-base bentonite,carboxy methyl cellulose(CMC),polyvinyl acetate latex and trimeric sodium phosphate on suspension rate and viscosity of water-based foundry coatings and the interactions between the additives were investigated.The experiment results show that sodium-base bentonite or CMC can greatly increase suspension rate and viscosity of coatings,polyvinyl acetate latex decreases suspension rate,but it can increase viscosity.Both suspension rate and viscosity would be reduced when trimeric sodium phosphate was added to the systems.The interactions between these additives on the suspension rate of coatings are discovered,but the interactions on viscosity are not discovered.

Abstract:Five copolymers were synthesized and evaluated by solubility and thickening capability experiments. Molecular simulation was used to study the microstructures and intermolecular interactions. With an increase in the EAL group content, the inter-chain interaction of the copolymers increase and the chain flexibility reduce, leading to the decrease of the solubility. The intermolecular association degree of the copolymers enhances, resulting in an increase of the thickening capability. The P(HFDA0.19-co-EAL0.81) increases the viscosity of SC-CO2 by 96 times at 5 wt%, which is higher than those of the other three P(HFDA-co-EAL) copolymers (24-70 times). The cloud point pressure of P(HFDA0.39-co-MMA0.61) is higher than that of P(HFDA0.37-co-EAL0.63). P(HFDA0.37-co-EAL0.63) increases the viscosity of SC-CO2 by a factor of 70, while P (HFDA0.39-co-MMA0.61) by only 40. The presence of a methyl group in the main chain of P(HFDA-co-MMA) increases the steric hindrance and decreases the intermolecular association while decreasing its free volume and chain flexibility.

Abstract:We investigate previously unclarified effects of fluid elasticity on shear-thickening in dilute suspensions in an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid using a novel direct numerical simulation based on the smoothed profile method. Abstract:Rheological measurement has been a preferred approach in the characterization of the formation and evolution of microstructures for multi-component or multi-phase polymeric material systems owing to its sensitive response to changes of microstructures for heterogeneous polymers. In the present paper, based on applications of dynamic rheological measurements to multi-component polymer systems, some of the latest progress in studies on the correlations between the microstructure change and rheological response has been introduced as two aspects: relationships between viscoelastic behavior and microstructure of nano-composites and relationships between rheological behavior and liquid solid transition in isothermal crystallization of polyolefins. By means of rheological measurements, not only some valuable particulars responsible for the evolution of morphology and structure dealing with these polymer systems can be obtained, but also the corresponding results are in favor of designing and preparing novel polymer-based composites and functional materials.

Abstract:The work presented in this article involves the study of rheometric profile of several rheological additives in two-component (2K) high build epoxy zinc phosphate primer and two-component high build aliphatic polyurethane topcoat. Viscosity profile and thixotropic behavior at different shear rates have been determined for both the paints using Physica MCR 301 Rheometer of Anton Paar. The valuable information derived from these measurements led to better insight into the influence of these rheological additives on important paint properties like flow and leveling, sag control, in-can settling during storage, etc. Rheometric results were also compared with the results obtained during the actual application of these experimental coatings on mild steel panels. From the rheological study it was concluded that the thickeners based on surface-modified clay and organically modified castor oil derivative work well in epoxy zinc phosphate primer whereas polyurea-based thickener showed better results than other rheological additives in the case of the 2K polyurethane system. Measurement of low shear and high shear viscosity response of different thickeners helps in predicting storage and application behavior of these coatings which correlates well with the actual observation.

Abstract:To investigate the microstructural evolution dependency on the apparent viscosity in shear-thickening fluids (STFs), a hybrid mesoscale model combined with stochastic rotation dynamics (SRD) and molecular dynamics (MD) is used. Muller-Plathe reverse perturbation method is adopted to analyze the viscosities of STFs in a two-dimensional model. The characteristic of microstructural evolution of the colloidal suspensions under different shear rate is studied. The effect of diameter of colloidal particles and the phase volume fraction on the shear thickening behavior is investigated. Under low shear rate, the two-atom structure is formed, because of the strong particle attractions in adjacent layers. At higher shear rate, the synergetic pair structure extends to layered structure along flow direction because of the increasing hydrodynamics action. As the shear rate rises continuously, the layered structure rotates and collides with other particles, then turned to be individual particles under extension or curve string structure under compression. Finally, at the highest shear rate, the strings curve more severely and get into two-dimensional cluster. The apparent viscosity of the system changes from shear-thinning behavior to the shear-thickening behavior. This work presents valuable information for further understanding the shear thickening mechanism.
