Abstract:<p>Five copolymers were synthesized and evaluated by solubility and thickening capability experiments. Molecular simulation was used to study the microstructures and intermolecular interactions. With an increase in the EAL group content, the inter-chain interaction of the copolymers increase and the chain flexibility reduce, leading to the decrease of the solubility. The intermolecular association degree of the copolymers enhances, resulting in an increase of the thickening capability. The P(HFDA0.19-<em>co</em>-EAL0.81) increases the viscosity of SC-CO2 by 96 times at 5 wt%, which is higher than those of the other three P(HFDA-<em>co</em>-EAL) copolymers (24-70 times). The cloud point pressure of P(HFDA0.39-<em>co</em>-MMA0.61) is higher than that of P(HFDA0.37-<em>co</em>-EAL0.63). P(HFDA0.37-<em>co</em>-EAL0.63) increases the viscosity of SC-CO2 by a factor of 70, while P (HFDA0.39-<em>co</em>-MMA0.61) by only 40. The presence of a methyl group in the main chain of P(HFDA-<em>co</em>-MMA) increases the steric hindrance and decreases the intermolecular association while decreasing its free volume and chain flexibility.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to study the properties of copolymer thickeners, especially their solubility and thickening ability, through experiments and molecular simulations when using copolymer thickeners in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC - CO₂). Specifically, the paper focuses on the following points: 1. **Copolymer Synthesis and Characterization**: Five copolymers were synthesized, and their copolymerization ratios were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In addition, the surface tension, glass - transition temperature, and molar mass of these copolymers were measured. 2. **Solubility Study**: The cloud - point pressures of these copolymers in supercritical carbon dioxide were determined experimentally, and the effects of temperature and mass concentration on the solubility of copolymers were explored. 3. **Thickening Ability Study**: The relative viscosities of copolymers in supercritical carbon dioxide at different mass concentrations were determined experimentally to evaluate their thickening abilities. 4. **Molecular Simulation**: All - atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to study the microstructures and intermolecular interactions of copolymers in supercritical carbon dioxide, and the interaction energies, copolymer conformations, and radial distribution functions (RDF) were analyzed. The main purpose of the paper is to reveal the relationship between the copolymer structure and its performance in supercritical carbon dioxide, thereby providing a theoretical basis for designing and selecting more effective thickeners.
