Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:A hyperbolic 3-manifold is geometrically bounding if it is the only boundary of a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. According to previous results of Long and Reid (2000) and Meyerhoff and Neumann (1992), geometrically bounding closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds are very rare. Assume the value v ? 4.3062... for the volume of the regular right-angled hyperbolic dodecahedron P in H3. For each positive integer n and each odd integer k in [1, 5n + 3], we construct a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M with fi1(M) = k and vol(M) = 16nv which bounds a totally geodesic hyperbolic 4-manifold. In particular, for every positive odd integer k, there are infinitely many geometrically bounding 3-manifolds whose first Betti numbers are k. The proof exploits the real toric manifold theory over a sequence of stacking dodecahedra, together with some results obtained by Kolpakov, Martelli and Tschantz (2015).

Abstract:Let $M$ be an oriented closed hyperbolic $3$--manifold. Suppose that $w$ is a rational second cohomology class of $M$ with dual Thurston norm $1$. Upon the existence of certain nonvanishing Alexander polynomials, the author shows that the pullback of $w$ to some finite cover of $M$ is the real Euler class of some transversely oriented taut foliation on that cover. As application, the author constructs examples with first Betti number either $2$ or $3$, and partial examples with any first Betti number at least $4$, supporting Yazdi's virtual Euler class one conjecture.

Abstract:We use virtual neighborhood technique to establish GW-invariants, Quantum cohomology, equivariant GW-invariants, equivariant quantum cohomology and Floer cohomology for general symplectic manifold. We also establish GW-invariants for a family of symplectic manifolds. As a consequence, we prove Arnold conjecture for nondegenerate Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms.

Abstract:An x-ray detector using a liquid-helium cooled large-area silicon PIN photodiode has been developed along with a tailor-made charge sensitive preamplifier whose first-stage JFET has been cooled. The operating temperature of the JFET has been varied separately and optimized. The x- and $\gamma$-ray energy spectra for an \nuc{241}{Am} source have been measured with the photodiode operated at 13 K. An energy resolution of 1.60 keV (FWHM) has been obtained for 60-keV $\gamma$ rays and 1.30 keV (FWHM) for the pulser. The energy threshold could be set as low as 3 keV. It has been shown that a silicon PIN photodiode serves as a low-cost excellent x-ray detector which covers large area at 13 K.

Abstract:For any pair of orientable closed hyperbolic $3$--manifolds, this paper shows that any isomorphism between the profinite completions of their fundamental groups witnesses a bijective correspondence between the Zariski dense $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Q}^{\mathtt{ac}})$--representations of their fundamental groups, up to conjugacy; moreover, corresponding pairs of representations have identical invariant trace fields and isomorphic invariant quaternion algebras. (Here, $\mathbb{Q}^{\mathtt{ac}}$ denotes an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$.) Next, assuming the $p$--adic Borel regulator injectivity conjecture for number fields, this paper shows that uniform lattices in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ with isomorphic profinite completions have identical invariant trace fields, isomorphic invariant quaternion algebras, identical covolume, and identical arithmeticity.

Intersections of Real Symmetric Hypersurfaces

Abstract:We prove a symmetric version of Bézout's theorem. More precisely, we show that the symmetric orbit type of a transverse intersection of complex symmetric hypersurfaces in projective space is determined by the degrees. In the projective plane, we fully classify the possible orbit types of such intersection loci using completely elementary methods. From this classification, we obtain strong restrictions on the number of real points in the intersection of real symmetric curves. We also provide a partial classification in $\mathbb{P}^3_{\mathbb{C}}$, with a similar restriction on real points.

Abstract:We prove that, on any closed manifold of dimension at least two with non-trivial first Betti number, a $C^\infty$ generic Riemannian metric has infinitely many closed geodesics, and indeed closed geodesics of arbitrarily large length. We derive this existence result combining a theorem of Mañé together with the following new theorem of independent interest: the existence of minimal closed geodesics, in the sense of Aubry-Mather theory, implies the existence of a transverse homoclinic, and thus of a horseshoe, for the geodesic flow of a suitable $C^\infty$-close Riemannian metric.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth complex quasi-projective variety and $\Gamma=\pi_1(X)$. Let $\chi \colon \Gamma \to \mathbb{R}$ be an additive character. We prove that the ray $[\chi]$ does not belong to the BNS set $\Sigma(\Gamma)$ if and only if it comes as a pullback along an algebraic fibration $f \colon X \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. We also prove that if $\pi_1(X)$ admits a solvable quotient which is not virtually nilpotent, there exists a finite étale cover $X_1 \to X$ and a fibration $f \colon X_1 \to \mathcal{C}$ over a quasi-projective hyperbolic orbicurve $\mathcal{C}$. Both of these results were proved by Delzant in the case when $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold. We deduce that $\Gamma$ is virtually solvable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent, generalising the theorems of Delzant and Arapura-Nori. As a byproduct, we prove a version of Simpson's Lefschetz Theorem for the integral leaves of logarithmic $1$-forms that do not extend to any partial compactification. We give two applications of our results. First, we strengthen the recent theorem of Cadorel-Deng-Yamanoi on virtual nilpotency of fundamental groups of quasi-projective $h$-special and weakly special manifolds. Second, we prove the sharpness of Suciu's tropical bound for the fundamental groups of smooth quasi-projective varieties and answer a question of Suciu on the topology of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:We show that if V is a subvariety of the affine N-space defined by polynomials of degree at most d, then the sum of its $\ell$-adic Betti numbers does not exceed $2(N + 1)^{2N +1}(d+ 1)^N$. This answers a question of Katz (FFA 2001).

Abstract:We study which lens spaces can bound smooth 4-manifolds with second Betti number one under various topological conditions. Specifically, we show that there are infinite families of lens spaces that bound compact, simply-connected, smooth 4-manifolds with second Betti number one, yet cannot bound a 4-manifold consisting of a single 0-handle and 2-handle. Additionally, we establish the existence of infinite families of lens spaces that bound compact, smooth 4-manifolds with first Betti number zero and second Betti number one, but cannot bound simply-connected 4-manifolds with second Betti number one. The construction of such 4-manifolds with lens space boundaries is motivated by the study of rational homology projective planes with cyclic quotient singularities.

Abstract:We give lower bounds on the maximal injectivity radius for a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold M with first Betti number 2, under some additional topological hypotheses. A corollary of the main result is that if M has first Betti number 2 and contains no fibroid surface then its maximal injectivity radius exceeds 0.32798. For comparison, Andrew Przeworski showed, with no topological restrictions, that the maximal injectivity radius exceeds arcsinh(1/4) = 0.247..., while the authors showed that if M has first Betti number at least 3 then the maximal injectivity exceeds log(3)/2 = 0.549.... The proof combines a result due to Przeworski with techniques developed by the authors in the 1990s.

Abstract:We show that each connected component of the moduli space of smooth real binary quintics is isomorphic to an arithmetic quotient of an open subset of the real hyperbolic plane. Moreover, our main result says that the induced metric on this moduli space extends to a complete real hyperbolic orbifold structure on the space of stable real binary quintics. This turns the moduli space of stable real binary quintics into a real two-dimensional ball quotient, whose fundamental domain is given by the hyperbolic triangle of angles $\pi/3, \pi/5$ and $\pi/10$, and whose fundamental group is non-arithmetic.

Irreducible symplectic varieties with a large second Betti number

Abstract:We prove a general result on the existence of irreducible symplectic compactifications of non-compact Lagrangian fibrations. As an application, we show that the relative Jacobian fibration of cubic fivefolds containing a fixed cubic fourfold can be compactified by a $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal irreducible symplectic variety with the second Betti number at least 24, and admits a Lagrangian fibration whose base is a weighted projective space. In particular, it belongs to a new deformation type of irreducible symplectic varieties.

Abstract:We construct virtual fundamental classes on nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves in complex nonsingular projective surfaces. These classes recover the virtual classes of Seiberg-Witten theory as well as the (reduced) stable theory, and play a crucial role in the reduced Donaldson-Thomas theory of local-surface-threefolds that we study in [GSY17b] (arXiv:1807.05697). We show that certain integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of punctual nested Hilbert schemes are expressed as integrals over the products of the Hilbert scheme of points. We are able to find explicit formulas for some of these integrals by relating them to Carlsson-Okounkov's vertex operator formulas.
On Euler number of symplectic hyperbolic manifold

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a class of closed $2n$-dimensional almost Kähler manifold $X$ which called the special symplectic hyperbolic manifold. Those manifolds include Kähler hyperbolic manifolds. We study the spaces of $L^{2}$-harmonic forms on the universal covering space of $X$. We then prove the Singer conjecture on special symplectic hyperbolic case. As an application, we can show that the Euler number of a special symplectic manifold satisfies the inequality $(-1)^{n}\chi(X)>0$.
