Abstract:In this paper, we consider immersed two-sided minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite total curvature. We prove that the sum of the Morse index and the nullity of the Jacobi operator is bounded from below by a linear function of the number of ends and the first Betti number of the hypersurface. When $n=4$, we are able to drop the nullity term by a careful study for the rigidity case. Our result is the first effective generalization of Li-Wang. Using our index estimates and ideas from the recent work of Chodosh-Ketover-Maximo, we prove compactness and finiteness results of minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with finite index.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that for an embedded unstable one-sided minimal hypersurface of the $(n+1)$-dimensional real projective space, the Morse index is at least $n+2$, and this bound is attained by the cubic isoparametric minimal hypersurfaces. We also show that there exist closed embedded two-sided minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional real projective space of each odd index by computing the index of the Lawson surfaces.

Abstract:By using the interior curvature estimate and Gromov's compactness theorem, we prove that a stable complete minimal hypersurface in R n +1 with finite total scalar curvature must be a hyperplane. This extends the result obtained by P. Bérard in Remarques sur l'équation de J. Simons, Pitman Monographs Surveys Pure Appl. Math. , vol. 52, 1991, pp. 47-57.

Abstract:Given a compact Riemannian manifold, of dimension between 3 and 7, with boundary, we adapt Song's method in Song (2023) to the free boundary case to show that the Morse index of a free boundary minimal hypersurface grows linearly with the sum of its Betti numbers, where the constant of growth depends on the area of the free boundary minimal hypersurface in question.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a closed minimal hypersurface in $\SSS$ with $\lambda_1<n$ has Morse index at least $n+4$, providing a partial answer to a conjecture of Perdomo. As a corollary, we re-obtain a partial proof of the famous Urbano Theorem for minimal tori in $\mathbb{S}^3$: a minimal torus in $\mathbb{S}^3$ has Morse index at least $5$, with equality holding if and only if it is congruent to the Clifford torus. The proof is based on a comparison theorem between eigenvalues of two elliptic operators, which also provides us simpler new proofs of some known results on index estimates of both minimal and $r$-minimal hypersurfaces in a sphere.

Equivariant Morse index of min-max $G$-invariant minimal hypersurfaces

Abstract:For a closed Riemannian manifold $M^{n+1}$ with a compact Lie group $G$ acting as isometries, the equivariant min-max theory gives the existence and the potential abundance of minimal $G$-invariant hypersurfaces provided $3\leq {\rm codim}(G\cdot p) \leq 7$ for all $p\in M$. In this paper, we show a compactness theorem for these min-max minimal $G$-hypersurfaces and construct a $G$-invariant Jacobi field on the limit. Combining with an equivariant bumpy metrics theorem, we obtain a $C^\infty_G$-generic finiteness result for min-max $G$-hypersurfaces with area uniformly bounded. As a main application, we further generalize the Morse index estimates for min-max minimal hypersurfaces to the equivariant setting. Namely, the closed $G$-invariant minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset M$ constructed by the equivariant min-max on a $k$-dimensional homotopy class can be chosen to satisfy ${\rm Index}_G(\Sigma)\leq k$.

Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the spectra of the stability and Hodge–Laplacian operators on a compact manifold immersed as a hypersurface in a smooth metric measure space, possibly with singularities. Using ideas developed by A. Ros and A. Savo, along with an ingenious computation, we have obtained a comparison between the spectra of these operators. As a byproduct of this technique, we have deduced an estimate of the Morse index of such hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In Finsler geometry, minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. In this paper, we give the explicit expressions of BH-minimal and HT-minimal rotational hypersurfaces generated by plane curves rotating around the axis in the direction of ${\tilde{\beta}^{\sharp}}$ in Minkowski (α, β)-space ${(\mathbb{V}^{n+1},\tilde{F_b})}$ , where ${\mathbb{V}^{n+1}}$ is an (n+1)-dimensional real vector space, ${\tilde{F_b}=\tilde{\alpha}\phi(\tilde{\beta}/\tilde{\alpha}), \tilde{\alpha}}$ is the Euclidean metric, ${\tilde{\beta}}$ is a one form of constant length ${b:=\|\tilde{\beta}\|_{\tilde{\alpha}}, \tilde{\beta}^{\sharp}}$ is the dual vector of ${\tilde{\beta}}$ with respect to ${\tilde{\alpha}}$ . Abstract:The contribution of this paper is two-fold. The first one is to derive a simple formula of the mean curvature form for a hypersurface in the Randers space with a Killing field, by considering the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and Holmes-Thompson measure simultaneously. The second one is to obtain the explicit local expressions of two types of nontrivial rotational BH-minimal surfaces in a Randers domain of constant flag curvature K=-1, which are the first examples of BH-minimal surfaces in the hyperbolic Randers space.
On the Morse index of free-boundary CMC hypersurfaces in the upper hemisphere

Abstract:We prove results for free-boundary hypersurfaces in the upper unit hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$. First we show that if the norm squared of the second fundamental form is constant, the Morse index of a free-boundary minimal hypersurface $\Sigma\subset \mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}$ equals: $1$ if $\Sigma$ is a totally geodesic equator, $n+1$ if $\Sigma$ is half of the Clifford torus, or it is at least $2(n+1)$ when $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic. Next we prove an estimate for the first eigenvalue $\lambda_1$ of the second variation's Jacobi operator, and show that $\lambda_1 \leq -2n$ if $\Sigma$ is not totally geodesic, with equality iff $\Sigma$ is half of the minimal Clifford torus. Furthermore, $\lambda_1 = -n$ iff $\Sigma$ is totally geodesic. Finally, if $\Sigma$ is not totally umbilical the Morse index is at least $n+1$, with equality precisely when $\Sigma$ is the upper $\mathrm{H}$-torus. For totally umbilical hypersurfaces the Morse index is $1$. We also prove an upper bound for the first eigenvalue of free-boundary $\mathrm{CMC}$ hypersurfaces, where equality corresponds to totally umbilical hypersurfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate singular minimal hypersurfaces of the product of spheres . Using special cutoff functions and an ingenious trick, we prove a gap in the Morse index of singular minimal hypersurfaces under suitable assumptions. In particular, we characterize the singular minimal hypersurfaces with a low index for some values of the radii and dimensions of the spheres. Finally, we compute the value of the k -width of the product of spheres for some values of k .

Abstract:We employ partitioning methods, in the spirit of Montiel--Ros but here recast for general actions of compact Lie groups, to prove effective lower bounds on the Morse index of certain families of closed minimal hypersurfaces in the round four-dimensional sphere, and of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the Euclidean four-dimensional ball. Our analysis reveals, in particular, phenomena of linear index growth for sequences of minimal hypersurfaces of fixed topological type, in strong contrast to the three-dimensional scenario.

Abstract:We prove local measure bounds on the tubular neighbourhood of the singular set of codimension one stationary integral n -varifolds V in Riemannian manifolds which have both: (i) finite index on their smoothly embedded part; and (ii) -null singular set. A direct consequence of such a bound is a bound on the upper Minkowski content of the singular set of such a varifold in terms of its total mass and its index. Such a result improves on known bounds, namely the corresponding bound on the -measure of the singular set established by Song (Duke Math J 172(11):2073–2147, 2023), as well as the same bounds established by Naber and Valtorta (J Eur Math Soc 22(10):3305–3382, 2020) for codimension one area minimising currents. Our results also provide more structural information on the singular set for codimension one integral varifolds with finite index (on the regular part) and no classical singularities established by Wickramasekera (Ann Math 179:843–1007, 2014).

Abstract:We prove upper bounds for the Morse index and number of intersections of min-max geodesics achieving the $p$-widths of a closed surface. A key tool in our analysis is a proof that for a generic set of metrics, the tangent cone at any vertex of any finite union of closed immersed geodesics consists of exactly two lines. We also construct examples to demonstrate that multiplicity one does not hold generically in this setting. Specifically, we construct an open set of metrics on $S^2$ for which the $p$-width is only achieved by $p$ copies of a single geodesic.

Abstract:In this note we prove that any minimal $2$-torus in $S^4$ has Morse index at least $6$, with equality if and only if it is congruent to the Clifford torus in some great $S^3\subset S^4$.For a minimal $2$-torus in $S^n$ with vanishing Hopf differential, we show that its index is at least $n+3$, and that this estimate is sharp: the equilateral $2$-torus fully embedded in $S^5\subset S^n$ as a homogeneous minimal surface in $S^n$ has index exactly $n+3$.

Index of bipolar surfaces to Otsuki tori

Abstract:For each rational number $p/q\in (1/2,\sqrt 2/2)$ one can construct an $\mathbb S^1$-equivariant minimal torus in $\mathbb S^3$ called Otsuki torus and denoted by $O_{p/q}$. The Lawson's bipolar surface construction applied to $O_{p/q}$ gives a minimal torus $\widetilde O_{p/q}$ in $\mathbb S^4$. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the Morse index and the nullity of these tori for $p/q$ close to $\sqrt 2/2$. We also state a numerically assisted conjecture concerning the general case.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a surface with a symplectic form, let $\phi$ be a symplectomorphism of $\Sigma$, and let $Y$ be the mapping torus of $\phi$. We show that the dimensions of moduli spaces of embedded pseudoholomorphic curves in $\R\times Y$, with cylindrical ends asymptotic to periodic orbits of $\phi$ or multiple covers thereof, are bounded from above by an additive relative index. We deduce some compactness results for these moduli spaces. This paper establishes some of the foundations for a program with Michael Thaddeus, to understand the Seiberg-Witten Floer homology of $Y$ in terms of such pseudoholomorphic curves. Analogues of our results should also hold in three dimensional contact homology.

Abstract:We study the weak stability index of an immersion ϕ: M → Sn+1 (1) ⊂ Rn+2 of an n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We prove that the weak stability index of a compact hypersurface M with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is not totally umbilical, is greater than or equal to n + 2 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant, and that the equality holds if and only if M is $\smash{S^m(c)\times S^{n-m}(\sqrt{1-c^2})}$. As an application, we show that the weak stability index of an n-dimensional compact hypersurface with constant scalar curvature in Sn+1 (1), which is neither totally umbilical nor a Clifford hypersurface, is greater than or equal to 2n + 4 if the mean curvature H1 and H3 are constant.
