Abstract:We show that if V is a subvariety of the affine N-space defined by polynomials of degree at most d, then the sum of its $\ell$-adic Betti numbers does not exceed $2(N + 1)^{2N +1}(d+ 1)^N$. This answers a question of Katz (FFA 2001).

Abstract:We prove that for a finite set of points $X$ in the projective $n$-space over any field, the Betti number $\beta_{n,n+1}$ of the coordinate ring of $X$ is non-zero if and only if $X$ lies on the union of two planes whose sum of dimension is less than $n$. Our proof is direct and short, and the inductive step rests on a combinatorial statement that works over matroids.

Abstract:We prove uniform upper bounds on the number of integral points of bounded height on affine varieties. If $X$ is an irreducible affine variety of degree $d\geq 4$ in $\mathbb{A}^n$ which is not the preimage of a curve under a linear map $\mathbb{A}^n\to \mathbb{A}^{n-\dim X+1}$, then we prove that $X$ has at most $O_{d,n,\varepsilon}(B^{\dim X - 1 + \varepsilon})$ integral points up to height $B$. This is a strong analogue of dimension growth for projective varieties, and improves upon a theorem due to Pila, and a theorem due to Browning-Heath-Brown-Salberger. Our techniques follow the $p$-adic determinant method, in the spirit of Heath-Brown, but with improvements due to Salberger, Walsh, and Castryck-Cluckers-Dittmann-Nguyen. The main difficulty is to count integral points on lines on an affine surface in $\mathbb{A}^3$, for which we develop point-counting results for curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. We also formulate and prove analogous results over global fields, following work by Paredes-Sasyk.

Abstract:Let $H = \langle n_1, n_2, n_3\rangle$ be a numerical semigroup. Let $\tilde H$ be the interval completion of $H$, namely the semigroup generated by the interval $\langle n_1, n_1+1, \ldots, n_3\rangle$. Let $K$ be a field and $K[H]$ the semigroup ring generated by $H$. Let $I_H^*$ be the defining ideal of the tangent cone of $K[H]$. In this paper, we describe the defining equations of $I_H^*$. From that, we establish the Herzog-Stamate conjecture for monomial space curves stating that $\beta_i(I_H^*) \le \beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ for all $i$, where $\beta_i(I_H^*)$ and $\beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ are the $i$th Betti numbers of $I_H^*$ and $I_{\tilde H}^*$ respectively.

Abstract:We prove that Lefschetz's principle of approximating the cohomology of a possibly singular affine scheme of finite type over a field by the cohomology of a suitable (thickening of a) hyperplane section can be made uniform: in the affine case, we can choose the hyperplane section independently of the cohomology. Using Jouanolou's trick, this gives a new way to bound the Betti numbers of quasi-projective schemes over a field, independently of the cohomology. This is achieved through a motivic version of Deligne's generic base change formula and an axiomatic presentation of the theory of perverse sheaves. These methods produce generating families of Voevodsky motivic sheaves that are realized in perverse sheaves over any base of equal characteristic.

Abstract:An x-ray detector using a liquid-helium cooled large-area silicon PIN photodiode has been developed along with a tailor-made charge sensitive preamplifier whose first-stage JFET has been cooled. The operating temperature of the JFET has been varied separately and optimized. The x- and $\gamma$-ray energy spectra for an \nuc{241}{Am} source have been measured with the photodiode operated at 13 K. An energy resolution of 1.60 keV (FWHM) has been obtained for 60-keV $\gamma$ rays and 1.30 keV (FWHM) for the pulser. The energy threshold could be set as low as 3 keV. It has been shown that a silicon PIN photodiode serves as a low-cost excellent x-ray detector which covers large area at 13 K.

Polynomial growth of Betti sequences over local rings

Abstract:This is a study of the sequences of Betti numbers of finitely generated modules over a complete intersection local ring, $R$. The subsequences $\{\beta^R_{i}(M)\}_{i\geq 0}$ with even, respectively, odd $i$ are known to be eventually given by polynomials in i with equal leading terms. We show that these polynomials coincide if $I^\square$, the ideal generated by the quadratic relations of the associated graded ring of $R$, satisfies ${\rm height}\ I^\square \ge {\rm codim}\ R -1$, and that the converse holds if $R$ is homogeneous or ${\rm codim}\ R \le 4$. Subsequently Avramov, Packauskas, and Walker proved that the terms of degree $j > {\rm codim}\ R - {\rm height}\ I^\square$ of the even and odd Betti polynomials are equal. We give a new proof of that result, based on an intrinsic characterization of residue rings of c.i. local rings of minimal multiplicity obtained in this paper. We also show that that bound is optimal.

Abstract:We deduce Katz's theorems for $(A,B)$-exponential sums over finite fields using $\ell$-adic cohomology and a theorem of Denef-Loeser, removing the hypothesis that $A+B$ is relatively prime to the characteristic $p$. In some degenerate cases, the Betti number estimate is improved using toric decomposition and Adolphson-Sperber's bound for the degree of $L$-functions. Applying the facial decomposition theorem in \cite{W1}, we prove that the universal family of $(A,B)$-polynomials is generically ordinary for its $L$-function when $p$ is in certain arithmetic progression.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that twisted $$\ell ^2$$ l 2 -Betti numbers of locally indicable groups are equal to the usual $$\ell ^2$$ l 2 -Betti numbers rescaled by the dimension of the twisting representation; this answers a question of Lück for this class of groups. It also leads to two formulae: given a fibration E with base space B having locally indicable fundamental group, and with a simply-connected fiber F , the first formula bounds $$\ell ^2$$ l 2 -Betti numbers $$b_i^{(2)}(E)$$ b i ( 2 ) ( E ) of E in terms of $$\ell ^2$$ l 2 -Betti numbers of B and usual Betti numbers of F ; the second formula computes $$b_i^{(2)}(E)$$ b i ( 2 ) ( E ) exactly in terms of the same data, provided that F is a high-dimensional sphere. We also present an inequality between twisted Alexander and Thurston norms for free-by-cyclic groups and 3-manifolds. The technical tools we use come from the theory of generalised agrarian invariants, whose study we initiate in this paper.

Abstract:We study the rate of growth of normalized Hodge numbers along a tower of abelian covers of a smooth projective variety with semismall Albanese map. These bounds are in some cases optimal. Moreover, we compute the $L^2$-Betti numbers of irregular varieties that satisfy the weak generic Nakano vanishing theorem e.g., varieties with semismall Albanese map). Finally, we study the convergence of normalized plurigenera along towers of abelian covers of any irregular variety. As an application, we extend a result of Kollár concerning the multiplicativity of higher plurigenera of a smooth projective variety of general type, to a wider class of varieties. In the Appendix, we study irregular varieties for which the first Betti number diverges along a tower of abelian covers induced by the Albanese variety.

Abstract:Papadima and Suciu proved an inequality between the ranks of the cohomology groups of the Aomoto complex with finite field coefficients and the twisted cohomology groups, and conjectured that they are actually equal for certain cases associated with the Milnor fiber of the arrangement. Recently, an arrangement (the icosidodecahedral arrangement) with the following two peculiar properties was found: (i) the strict version of Papadima-Suciu's inequality holds, and (ii) the first integral homology of the Milnor fiber has a non-trivial $2$-torsion. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between these two properties for double covering spaces. We prove that (i) and (ii) are actually equivalent.

Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.

On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:Let $[X,\lambda]$ be a principally polarized abelian variety over a finite field with commutative endomorphism ring; further suppose that either $X$ is ordinary or the field is prime. Motivated by an equidistribution heuristic, we introduce a factor $\nu_v([X,\lambda])$ for each place $v$ of $\mathbb Q$, and show that the product of these factors essentially computes the size of the isogeny class of $[X,\lambda]$. The derivation of this mass formula depends on a formula of Kottwitz and on analysis of measures on the group of symplectic similitudes, and in particular does not rely on a calculation of class numbers.
Arithmetic finiteness of very irregular varieties

Abstract:We prove the Shafarevich conjecture for very irregular varieties of dimension less than half the dimension of their Albanese variety, subject to some mild numerical conditions. Our proof relies on the Lawrence-Venkatesh method as in the work of Lawrence-Sawin, together with the big monodromy criterion from our work with Javanpeykar and Lehn.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-CM simple abelian variety over a number field $K$. For a place $v$ of $K$ such that $A$ has good reduction at $v$, let $F(A,v)$ denote the Frobenius field generated by the corresponding Frobenius eigenvalues. Assuming $A$ has connected monodromy groups, we show that the set of places $v$ such that $F(A,v)$ is isomorphic to a fixed number field has upper Dirichlet density zero. Assuming the GRH, we give a power saving upper bound for the number of such places.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers a monomial projective curve such that the Hilbert function of and the cardinalities of agree. The singularities of determines the asymptotic behaviour of | sA |, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of , and the asymptotic structure of sA . We show that some additive inverse problems can be translate to the rigidity of Hilbert polynomials and we improve an upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of monomial projective curves by using results of additive combinatorics.
