Abstract:We propose the new mechanism of neutrino flavour relaxation to explain the experimentally observed changes of initial neutrino flavour fluxes. The test of neutrino relaxation hypothesis is presented, using the data of modern reactor, solar and accelerator experiments. The final choice between the standard neutrino oscillations and the proposed neutrino flavour relaxation model can be done in future experiments.

Abstract:An x-ray detector using a liquid-helium cooled large-area silicon PIN photodiode has been developed along with a tailor-made charge sensitive preamplifier whose first-stage JFET has been cooled. The operating temperature of the JFET has been varied separately and optimized. The x- and $\gamma$-ray energy spectra for an \nuc{241}{Am} source have been measured with the photodiode operated at 13 K. An energy resolution of 1.60 keV (FWHM) has been obtained for 60-keV $\gamma$ rays and 1.30 keV (FWHM) for the pulser. The energy threshold could be set as low as 3 keV. It has been shown that a silicon PIN photodiode serves as a low-cost excellent x-ray detector which covers large area at 13 K.

Abstract:Given an elliptic curve E defined over C, let E-x be an open subset of E obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the i-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space Conf(n) (E-x) of n points on E-x appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the F-q-point counts of Conf(n) (E-x), which can be obtained from the zeta function of E over any fixed finite field F-q. We show that the mixed Hodge structure of the i-th singular cohomology group H-i(Conf(n) (E-x)) with complex coefficients is pure of weight w(i), an explicit integer we provide in this paper. This purity statement implies our main result about the Betti numbers and the Hodge numbers. Our proof uses Totaro's spectral sequence computation that describes the weight filtration of the mixed Hodge structure on H-i(Conf(n) (E-x)).

The proof is based on constructions on chain complexes. In the present paper, we translate the proof into the world of CW-complexes to make it more accessible.

Abstract:We show that for a countable exact group, having positive first ℓ 2 -Betti number implies proper proximality in this sense of [3]. This is achieved by showing a cocycle superrigidity result for Bernoulli shifts of non-properly proximal groups. We also obtain that Bernoulli shifts of countable, nonamenable, i.c.c., exact, non-properly proximal groups are OE-superrigid.

Abstract:We study the rate of growth of normalized Hodge numbers along a tower of abelian covers of a smooth projective variety with semismall Albanese map. These bounds are in some cases optimal. Moreover, we compute the $L^2$-Betti numbers of irregular varieties that satisfy the weak generic Nakano vanishing theorem e.g., varieties with semismall Albanese map). Finally, we study the convergence of normalized plurigenera along towers of abelian covers of any irregular variety. As an application, we extend a result of Kollár concerning the multiplicativity of higher plurigenera of a smooth projective variety of general type, to a wider class of varieties. In the Appendix, we study irregular varieties for which the first Betti number diverges along a tower of abelian covers induced by the Albanese variety.

On vanishing criteria of $L^2$-Betti numbers of groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group and $k$ a positive integer, we show that the $L^2$-Betti numbers of the group $G$ vanish up to degree $k$ provided that there is some infinite index subgroup $H$ with finite $k$th $L^2$-Betti number containing a normal subgroup of $G$ whose $L^2$-Betti numbers are all zero below degree $k$. This generalizes previous criteria of both Sauer and Thom, and Peterson and Thom. In addition, we exhibit a purely algebraic proof of a well-known theorem of Gaboriau concerning the first $L^2$-Betti number which was requested by Bourdon, Martin and Valette. Finally, we provide evidence of a positive answer for a question posted by Hillman that wonders whether the above statement holds for $k = 1$ and $H$ containing a subnormal subgroup instead.

Abstract:A 1-parameter variation of Hodge structures corresponds to a holomorphic, horizontal, locally liftable map into a classifying space of Hodge structures. In this paper it is shown that such a map has a limit in the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of the classifying space. The boundary component in which the limit lies is a union over possible polarizations of classifying spaces of Hodge structures on the primitive parts. It is discussed which boundary components can contain such limit points.

Abstract:Papadima and Suciu proved an inequality between the ranks of the cohomology groups of the Aomoto complex with finite field coefficients and the twisted cohomology groups, and conjectured that they are actually equal for certain cases associated with the Milnor fiber of the arrangement. Recently, an arrangement (the icosidodecahedral arrangement) with the following two peculiar properties was found: (i) the strict version of Papadima-Suciu's inequality holds, and (ii) the first integral homology of the Milnor fiber has a non-trivial $2$-torsion. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between these two properties for double covering spaces. We prove that (i) and (ii) are actually equivalent.

Abstract:A standing conjecture in L2-cohomology is that every finite CW-complex X is of L2-determinant class. In this paper, we prove this whenever the fundamental group belongs to a large class of groups containing e.g. all extensions of residually finite groups with amenable quotients, all residually amenable groups and free products of these. If, in addition, X is L2-acyclic, we also prove that the L2-determinant is a homotopy invariant. Even in the known cases, our proof of homotopy invariance is much shorter and easier than the previous ones. Under suitable conditions we give new approximation formulas for L2-Betti numbers. Errata are added, rectifying some unproved statements about "amenable extension": throughout, amenable extensions should be extensions with \emph{normal} subgroups.

Abstract:In the paper "The Second cohomology of nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras, Kyoto J. Math. 60 (2020), no. 2, 717-799" by I. Biswas, P. Chatterjee, and C. Maity, computable explicit descriptions of the second and first cohomology groups of a general homogeneous space of a Lie group are given, extending an earlier result in "On the exactness of Kostant-Kirillov form and the second cohomology of nilpotent orbits, Internat. J. Math. 23 (2012), no. 8, 1250086" by I. Biswas and P. Chatterjee. They turned out to be crucial in our computations related to the cohomology of nilpotent orbits, as done in the above two papers. Here we describe the third and fourth cohomologies of a general homogeneous space along the line mentioned above. We also draw various consequences of our main results in numerous special settings. In particular, we obtain an interesting invariant by showing that for a large class of homogeneous spaces, the difference between the third and fourth Betti numbers coincides with the difference in the numbers of simple factors of the ambient group and the associated closed subgroup.

On the Betti Numbers of Finite Volume Hyperbolic Manifolds

Abstract:We obtain strong upper bounds for the Betti numbers of compact complex-hyperbolic manifolds. We use the unitary holonomy to improve the results given by the most direct application of the techniques of [DS17]. We also provide effective upper bounds for Betti numbers of compact quaternionic- and Cayley-hyperbolic manifolds in most degrees. More importantly, we extend our techniques to complete finite volume real- and complex-hyperbolic manifolds. In this setting, we develop new monotonicity inequalities for strongly harmonic forms on hyperbolic cusps and employ a new peaking argument to estimate $L^2$-cohomology ranks. Finally, we provide bounds on the de Rham cohomology of such spaces, using a combination of our bounds on $L^2$-cohomology, bounds on the number of cusps in terms of the volume, and the topological interpretation of reduced $L^2$-cohomology on certain rank one locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:Let X be a compact Riemann surface together with a finite set of marked points. We use Morse theoretic techniques to compute the Betti numbers of the parabolic U(2,1)-Higgs bundles moduli spaces over X. We give examples for one marked point showing that the Poincare polynomials depend on the system of weights of the parabolic bundle.

Abstract:We study which lens spaces can bound smooth 4-manifolds with second Betti number one under various topological conditions. Specifically, we show that there are infinite families of lens spaces that bound compact, simply-connected, smooth 4-manifolds with second Betti number one, yet cannot bound a 4-manifold consisting of a single 0-handle and 2-handle. Additionally, we establish the existence of infinite families of lens spaces that bound compact, smooth 4-manifolds with first Betti number zero and second Betti number one, but cannot bound simply-connected 4-manifolds with second Betti number one. The construction of such 4-manifolds with lens space boundaries is motivated by the study of rational homology projective planes with cyclic quotient singularities.

Abstract:We compute L2-invariants of certain nonuniform lattices in semisimple Lie groups by means of the Borel-Serre compactification of arithmetically defined locally symmetric spaces. The main results give new estimates for Novikov-Shubin numbers and vanishing L2-torsion for lattices in groups with even deficiency. We discuss applications to Gromov's Zero-in-the-Spectrum Conjecture as well as to a proportionality conjecture for the L2-torsion of measure equivalent groups.

Let $K$ be a field and $K[H]$ the semigroup ring generated by $H$. Let $I_H^*$ be the defining ideal of the tangent cone of $K[H]$. In this paper, we describe the defining equations of $I_H^*$. From that, we establish the Herzog-Stamate conjecture for monomial space curves stating that $\beta_i(I_H^*) \le \beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ for all $i$, where $\beta_i(I_H^*)$ and $\beta_i(I_{\tilde H}^*)$ are the $i$th Betti numbers of $I_H^*$ and $I_{\tilde H}^*$ respectively.
