Abstract:The paper presents the results of the Battle of Postdisaster Response and Restoration (BPDRR) presented in a special session at the first International water distribution systems analysis & computing and control in the water industry (WDSA/CCWI) Joint Conference, held in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in July 2018. The BPDRR problem focused on how to respond and restore water service after the occurrence of five earthquake scenarios that cause structural damage in a water distribution system. Participants were required to propose a prioritization schedule to fix the damages of each scenario while following restrictions on visibility/nonvisibility of damages. Each team/approach was evaluated against six performance criteria: (1) time without supply for hospital/firefighting, (2) rapidity of recovery, (3) resilience loss, (4) average time of no user service, (5) number of users without service for eight consecutive hours, and (6) water loss. Three main types of approaches were identified from the submissions: (1) general-purpose metaheuristic algorithms, (2) greedy algorithms, and (3) ranking-based prioritizations. All three approaches showed potential to solve the challenge efficiently. The results of the participants showed that for this network, the impact of a large-diameter pipe failure on the network is more significant than several smaller pipes failures. The location of isolation valves and the size of hydraulic segments influenced the resilience of the system during emergencies. On average, the interruptions to water supply (hospitals and firefighting) varied considerably among solutions and emergency scenarios, highlighting the importance of private water storage for emergencies. The effects of damages and repair work were more noticeable during the peak demand periods (morning and noontime) than during the low-flow periods; and tank storage helped to preserve functionality of the network in the first few hours after a simulated event. Abstract:Improving the resilience of water distribution systems (WDSs) to handle natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes) is a critical step toward sustainable urban water management. This requires the water utility to be able to respond quickly to such disaster events, and in an organized manner, to prioritize the use of available resources to restore service rapidly while minimizing the negative impacts. Many methods have been developed to evaluate the WDS resilience, but few efforts are made so far to improve the resilience of a postdisaster WDS through identifying optimal sequencing of recovery actions. To address this gap, the authors propose a new dynamic optimization framework in this study in which the resilience of a postdisaster WDS is evaluated using six different metrics. A tailored genetic algorithm is developed to solve the complex optimization problem driven by these metrics. The proposed framework is demonstrated using a real-world WDS with 6,064 pipes. Results obtained show that the proposed framework successfully identifies near-optimal sequencing of recovery actions for this complex WDS. The gained insights, conditional on the specific attributes of the case study, include the following: (1) the near-optimal sequencing of a recovery strategy heavily depends on the damage properties of the WDS; (2) replacements of damaged elements tend to be scheduled at the intermediate-late stages of the recovery process due to their long operation time; and (3) interventions to damaged pipe elements near critical facilities (e.g., hospitals) should not be necessarily the first priority to recover due to complex hydraulic interactions within the WDS.

Abstract:The intermittent water supply (IWS) of water distribution systems is a common practice caused by the imbalance between available water resources and customers' demands. Transition to the continuous water supply (CWS) is desirable to reduce quality, equity distribution, and pipe integrity issues but is often practically unachievable in the short or medium term. The World Bank funded a laboratory activity at the Water Engineering laboratory of the University of Perugia, Italy, to investigate how remedies can be introduced to mitigate the impacts of IWS and preserve pipe integrity, facilitating the transition from IWS to CWS. The results of the tests with different feeding conditions, downstream outflows, and air valve dimensions and locations are described and discussed in this paper, culminating in typical interventions that can be implemented to reduce, if not completely eliminate, the undesirable consequences.

Abstract:In many developing countries, intermittent water supply (IWS) systems are prevalent, resulting in limited access to water for consumers who do not have continuous 24/7 supply. Consumers are compelled to utilize private storage tanks to adapt to IWS conditions and overcome periods with no water access. While achieving greater water availability, the use of storage tanks exacerbates existing supply inequity. We propose a simulation–optimization approach that models consumers using a volume-driven demand technique to account for IWS consumer behavior, and employs a Bayesian optimization to determine the flow control valve schedule to improve local supply and global equity. The results demonstrate the existence of a hierarchy in supply in which consumers with favorable hydraulic conditions are able to fill their tanks any time supply is available, leaving consumers with less-favorable hydraulic conditions to fill their tanks only when an excess in supply exists. With limited control, only some global disparities can be offset. Additionally, intermittency in supply exacerbates the inequity and limits the efficacy of controls, reinforcing the importance of improving the continuity in supply. The proposed approach provides insights into the mechanisms behind inequitable supply in IWS systems, where further research is needed to maximize consumer welfare.

Abstract:This paper formalizes an optimal water-power flow (OWPF) problem to optimize the use of controllable assets across power and water systems while accounting for the couplings between the two infrastructures. Tanks and pumps are optimally managed to satisfy water demand while improving power grid operations; {for the power network, an AC optimal power flow formulation is augmented to accommodate the controllability of water pumps.} Unfortunately, the physics governing the operation of the two infrastructures and coupling constraints lead to a nonconvex (and, in fact, NP-hard) problem; however, after reformulating OWPF as a nonconvex, quadratically-constrained quadratic problem, a feasible point pursuit-successive convex approximation approach is used to identify feasible and optimal solutions. In addition, a distributed solver based on the alternating direction method of multipliers enables water and power operators to pursue individual objectives while respecting the couplings between the two networks. The merits of the proposed approach are demonstrated for the case of a distribution feeder coupled with a municipal water distribution network.

Abstract:Rehabilitation of water distribution systems is a complex task that water companies have to tackle continually to keep high‐quality service. The larger and more complex the network, the harder to make decisions about the network maintenance strategy to be implemented. Considering pipe replacement as a strategy for water network rehabilitation, this work presents a combination of water distribution system analysis and multi‐criteria analysis to rank alternatives for pipe replacement. A set of eight performance criteria is used to evaluate the rehabilitation alternatives. The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is herein adopted to rank the solutions, coupled with a final sensitivity analysis on criteria weights. The obtained results point out as pipe replacement is an essential strategy for rehabilitation since the eight evaluation criteria are improved. The sensitivity analysis shows the best solutions' robustness, with just a few variations in their position in the ranking. The most frequent best solution is then hydraulically evaluated, showing the real benefits of pipe replacement in terms of pressure deficit reduction.

Abstract:Water and wastewater infrastructure worldwide faces unprecedented demand and supply conflicts that require unconventional solutions. In this study, we develop a novel modelling framework to assess the environmental and economic implications of a hybrid water supply system that supplements a centralized surface water supply with distributed direct potable reuse (DPR) of municipal wastewater, as a strategy to address such challenges. The model is tested with real water and wastewater systems data from the City of Houston, Texas. Results show that supplementing the conventional centralized water supply with distributed DPR would reduce water age in the drinking-water distribution network and hence improve water quality; properly designed system configurations attain system-wide net energy savings even with the high energy consumption of existing technologies used for advanced treatment of the wastewater. A target energy efficiency for future advanced treatment technologies is identified to achieve net energy saving with all hybrid system configurations. Furthermore, distributed DPR remains financially competitive compared with other unconventional water supply solutions. The modelling framework and associated databases developed in this study serve an important research need for quantitatively characterizing distributed and hybrid water systems, laying the necessary foundation for rational design of integrated urban water systems. Water and wastewater infrastructure worldwide faces unprecedented challenges. A new model can assess the environmental and economic implications of a hybrid water supply system that provides a centralized surface water supply with distributed direct potable reuse of municipal wastewater.

Abstract:This article presents a study of Hybrid Rainwater/Greywater Systems (HRGS), with the objective of perceiving the main factors that influence their performance and how they can be optimized. For this goal, a decision support tool, that makes their dimensioning and performs an economic and performance analysis, was used for four different types of buildings: a single-family house, a multifamily building and two service buildings. For each case, distinct scenarios were defined, considering different end-uses of non-potable water, in order to evaluate the performance of the systems using effectiveness and performance indicators. Results show that the effectiveness of "non-potable water consumption" is influenced by two main factors: the final uses considered for non-potable water and the storage volume. In most of the study cases, values of effectiveness (ratio between the volume of non-potable water used and non-potable water demand for the final uses considered) greater than 50% were obtained. In the case of domestic buildings, such as single-family house and multifamily building effectiveness values above 67%, were obtained. And for the case of service buildings, the effectiveness was between 42.8 and 65.6% in one case, and between 12.9 and 93.6% for the other. The best performance of the studied hybrid systems is achieved when the volume of non-potable water used in the building is maximized, resulting in greater savings of potable water. In addition, the larger the fraction of greywater reused, the lower the volume of wastewater produced and sent directly to the sanitation network.

Abstract:A systematic approach is proposed to design an optimal batch water-using network with centralized regeneration in order to deal with coordination of discontinuous water-using operations with one central continuous regeneration unit during multiple repeated batch cycles. The mathematical formulation in weak forms that readily induces process dynamic expressions is established under the framework of continuous time representation, in which a rigorous dynamic model of a tank is embedded. The freshwater consumption and the regeneration flow rates are minimized by a two-stage optimization approach. The integration of the batch water-using system highlights fixed regeneration flow rates and transitional behaviors from the start-Lip phase to steady state in multiple batch cycles. Optimal network structures and evolution characteristics of residual water and contaminant concentrations in buffer tanks can be achieved through solutions to the nonlinear programming problems (NLP). Four scenarios, including truly batch and semicontinuous water-using systems in both multiproduct and multipurpose batch plants, are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Sludge from water treatment plants (WTPs) is usually processed by physicochemical clarification followed by thickening, which results in the production of an effluent from dewatering/drying sludge processes that can potentially impact the environment. This paper assessed the viability of employing sludge dewatering water from a water treatment sludge plant (WTSP) in São Paulo State, Brazil, for reuse purposes. Water quality variables were monitored in the effluent and receiving stream. The data were analyzed by paired samples Student t -test (parametric significance test), paired samples Wilcoxon signed rank test (non-parametric significance test), and principal component analysis (multivariate analysis). Despite the distribution of data, typically not Gaussian, both Student and Wilcoxon methods agreed in 9 out of 10 studied parameters regarding the influence of WTSP discharge on waterbody; only for total manganese the Wilcoxon approach provided better fit than Student. Principal component analysis helped to evince correlations among all variables. Results provided useful information for understanding the vocation of WTSP effluent for reuse. For direct non-potable reuse, recirculating the final effluent back to the WTP for two months saved 92,000 m 3 of water, the volume of drinking water demanded by the city ( n = 292,000 inhabitants) in approximately 30 h.

Abstract:Previous events of tailing dam failures were associated with impacts in the water sources of drinking water treatment plants, which involves elevated concentrations of suspended solids and metal(oid)s. This study assesses the effectiveness of conventional treatment processes at a lab-scale, highlighting their limited robustness in treating water with different physicochemical qualities. Subsequently, it validates the integration of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) into an existing water treatment plant to enhance its performance. The processes were conducted at a pilot scale, operating for 660 h under varied turbidity (<2 – 200 NTU) and contaminant (iron, manganese, and arsenic) concentrations. The membranes operated steadily with an average permeate flux of 38.6 ± 0.9 L/m 2 h and 19.6 ± 0.8 L/m 2 h for UF and RO, respectively. UF fouling was primarily related to internal pore blocking and attributed to organic matter and inorganic compounds, identified using excitation-emission matrix and energy-dispersive X-ray mapping across the cross-section of its fibers. Due to the limitations of UF in removing dissolved species, RO became necessary and ensured that all parameters analyzed met drinking water standards. The UF-RO contributes to higher robustness to conventional treatment processes and addresses operational challenges associated with a dam rupture event such as the unforeseen alteration in the quality of surface water that hinders the optimization of pre-oxidants and coagulants in conventional treatment process. To reduce costs, energy requirements, and the size of membrane-based systems, a blending strategy was proposed with a focus on achieving drinking water standards. The suggested blends include effluent from sand filters and RO permeate in a 1:1 ratio. That was only possible due to the high quality achieved for RO permeate. Apart from creating more compact systems, the blending strategy promotes the remineralization of RO permeate, mitigating undesirable characteristics such as corrosiveness, taste, and odor. For the concentrate, UF concentrate could be recycled back into the treatment process, improving water recovery in the drinking water facility, while the concentrate from RO adheres to discharge limits. Overall, the study advances investigations on integrating ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis with conventional drinking water treatment to address water quality issues from tailing dam ruptures.

Abstract:Combined, decentralized systems for rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse may enhance the water security of urban areas by reducing dependence on the main water supply, in particular during critical periods, such as the dry season. They can also minimize the risk of flooding during the rainy season. The present study assesses the accumulated knowledge of these combined systems based on a systematic review of the literature restricted to academic sources. The review revealed knowledge gaps that must be resolved to better assess the optimum combination of rainwater and greywater recovery, how this affects the need for the treatment of the recovered water, its final quality, potential options for reuse, water economy, and the environmental and economic performance of the system. Further empirical studies are required to determine the most adequate design configuration for these systems, considering their multiple objectives, technological perspectives, and in particular, their potential for improving environmental shortcomings. There is a clear need for widespread use of low-impact technologies to ensure the most effective possible results. Water recovery systems will become increasingly important as a means of tackling the challenges of water supplies in the urban landscape, which are being exacerbated by climate change.

Abstract:By subdividing the Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) into District Metered Areas (DMAs), it is possible to regulate pressures, reduce the time it takes to supply water to consumers, mitigate leaks and achieve a uniform distribution of demand. This process of DMAs creation is characterized by two stages: the partitioning of the system and the allocation of control devices. However, improving the management of supply networks is often only possible through the optimal allocation and operation of control devices in the pipelines. In this sense, this study proposes the implementation of different DMAs configurations with objective of costs, pressures, and water age minimization. For this work, hybrid algorithms are developed, consisting of the partitioning algorithms already established in the literature, Fast-Greedy and Louvain, and of the optimization algorithm Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The hybrid algorithms were implemented in the Python and Matlab programming languages. In this study, the Modena benchmark network has been used as a case study and the establishing DMAs have been made for single-objective optimizations. The results obtained are compared by analyzing hydraulic criteria, cost, modularity (connectivity) and frequency of valves allocated to the pipes. In general, the hybrid algorithms formed by Louvain algorithm obtained the best results.
