Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">High‐performance nonfullerene ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with two polymer donors are less frequently reported because of the limited numbers of efficient polymer donors with good compatibility. Herein, a wide‐bandgap polymer P1 with a deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level is incorporated as the third component into the benchmark PM6:Y6 binary system to fabricate ternary OSCs. The introduction of P1 not only leads to extended absorption coverage and forms a cascade‐like energy level alignment but also shows excellent compatibility with PM6, resulting in a favorable morphology in the ternary blend. More importantly, P1 possesses a deeper HOMO level (−5.6 eV) than most well‐known donor polymers, which enables resulting ternary OSCs with an improved open‐circuit voltage. As a result, the optimized ternary OSCs with 40 wt% P1 in donors achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.2% with a small nonradiative recombination loss of 0.23 eV, which is among the highest values of ternary OSCs based on two polymer donors. In addition, the ternary OSCs show a broad composition tolerance with a high PCE of over 14% throughout the whole blend ratios. These results provide an effective approach to fabricate efficient ternary OSCs by synergizing two wide‐bandgap polymer donors.</section>

Abstract:High‐performance ternary organic solar cells with a decreased bandgap and increased open‐circuit voltage are fabricated with the small‐molecule donor BTID‐2F featuring a higher highest occupied molecular orbital energy level than PM6 as the third component in the PM6:Y6 system. Significant improvements in ternary device performance are realized, and an impressive power conversion efficiency of 18.52% is obtained.Ternary architecture is a promising strategy to further boost the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Reducing the bandgap of the active layer materials not only widens the absorption wavelength range and enhances the short‐circuit current (Jsc) of the OSC, but also decreases the open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of the device, leading to a trade‐off situation for the optimization of the material system. Herein, a small‐molecule donor BTID‐2F, featuring a narrower bandgap than that of PM6, is introduced into a PM6:Y6 based system. The redshift in external quantum efficiency indicates the narrower bandgap and better aggregation in the ternary blends than those of binary ones. Interestingly, lower energy disorder and energy loss are also attained for the ternary devices, leading to higher Voc. Furthermore, owing to the suppressed recombination and morphological optimization, a simultaneous enhancement in the Jsc and fill factor boosts the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary OSC to 17.9% compared to 16.62% for the binary device. Likewise, replacing the acceptor with the L8‐BO molecule further improves the ternary PCE to 18.52%. This work indicates an emerging approach for fabricating high‐performance ternary OSCs with a decreased bandgap and increased Voc.

Abstract:Here, we combine two donor polymers with a relatively short synthesis method and fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with a high efficiency and a decent figure-of-merit. A series of characterizations show that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is the result of the coupling and competition of PTQ10 and PTVT‑T, where the molecular packing and phase separation motif of PTQ10 is broken but the strong aggregation of PTVT‑T is suppressed, resulting in efficient charge transport and collection, as well as suppressed bimolecular recombination. Moreover, a previously reported solvent-vapor-assisted casting method, taken as an understanding-guided optimization, pushes the optimal system’s efficiency to 19.11%. Furthermore, PTVT‑T-containing systems clearly show better light soaking and thermal stability than the PTQ10 binary control system, benefiting from the durable polymer matrix. Our work provides a useful approach for developing efficient, stable, and low-cost OSCs based on state-of-the-art donor/acceptor systems through morphology control of the ternary design.

Abstract:A new strategy for designing ternary solar cells is reported in this paper. A low-bandgap polymer named PTB7-Th and a high-bandgap polymer named PBDTTS-FTAZ sharing the same bulk ionization potential and interface positive integer charge transfer energy while featuring complementary absorption spectra are selected. They are used to fabricate efficient ternary solar cells, where the hole can be transported freely between the two donor polymers and collected by the electrode as in one broadband low bandgap polymer. Furthermore, the fullerene acceptor is chosen so that the energy of the positive integer charge transfer state of the two donor polymers is equal to the energy of negative integer charge transfer state of the fullerene, enabling enhanced dissociation of all polymer donor and fullerene acceptor excitons and suppressed bimolecular and trap assistant recombination. The two donor polymers feature good miscibility and energy transfer from high-bandgap polymer of PBDTTS-FTAZ to low-bandgap polymer of PTB7-Th, which contribute to enhanced performance of the ternary solar cell.

Abstract:Two new donoracceptor alternating wide band gap copolymers, PTTDBC-PhQC8 and PTTDBC-BTC12, based on an electron-rich tetrathienodibenzocarbazole (TTDBC) donor have been designed and synthesized, wherein two additional thienyl rings are fused into a 2,7-dithienylcarbazole skeleton to reinforce the structural coplanarity and rigidity of polymers. The quinoid thiophene in TTDBC can endow not only a wide optical band gap (similar to 1.9 eV) but also a deep HOMO (similar to 5.3 eV) for the resulting polymers. The conventional configuration solar cells based on PTTDBC-BTC12 exhibit a large V-oc of 0.91 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.30% (with a Jsc of 9.27 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.51), while a slightly higher PCE of 4.50% can be achieved for the inverted structure devices. We believe that these wide band gap polymers have potential to be used for tandem cell applications.
A Large‐Bandgap Guest Material Enabling Improved Efficiency and Reduced Energy Loss for Ternary Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">The rational design of guest photovoltaic materials (the third components) for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ternary polymer solar cells (PSCs) is a challenge. In this work, a large-bandgap material ((5Z,5′Z)-5,5′-(((4,4,9,9-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-4,9-dihydro-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b′]dithiophene-2,7-diyl)bis(2,5-difluoro-4,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(3-ethyl-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one, IBR-F) is designed, synthesized, and used as the guest material for ternary PSCs to improve the PCE and reduce the energy loss. IBR-F possesses a larger energy bandgap of 2.04 eV and a deeper highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level compared to PM6, as well as exhibiting good miscibility with PM6. Thus, the HOMO level is effectively downshifted when blending PM6 with IBR-F, which is in favor of obtaining a higher open-circuit voltage (Voc). Meanwhile, the incorporation of IBR-F into the PM6:Y6 blend can maintain the well-developed bulk-heterojunction morphological properties of the host blend without extra thermal annealing and improve the charge dissociation and collection efficiencies. As a result, the ternary PSC based on PM6:IBR-F:Y6 (1:0.2:1.2 w/w) demonstrates a higher Voc of 0.887 V and a reduced energy loss of 0.55 eV compared to the binary device based on PM6:Y6 (1:1.2 w/w) with a Voc of 0.840 V and energy loss of 0.59 eV, delivering an improved PCE of 17.15%. </section>

Abstract:The effect of a medium bandgap polymer doped into conventional binary heterojunction solar cells is investigated for ternary solar cells, which display different characteristics compared with traditional materials. First, the charge separation and recombination at the multi-interface (double donors/single acceptor) and the charge transport between different phases are simulated to reveal the competition mechanism of electron transfer and insights into the merits and demerits of a hole transport layer with medium and narrow band gaps. Second, global modeling of performance for PCDTBT8-doped PffBT4T-2OD-based ternary solar cells is established to evaluate the crucial parameters (open-circuit voltage (VOC), short-circuit current (JSC), fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE)) related to the experiment. The results demonstrate that the orbital energy levels, absorption peak, excited-state, fluorescence lifetimes and hole transportability are tunable upon the medium bandgap polymer doping process. The electron transfer process for the multi-interface is enhanced by doping different bandgap polymers compared with a single interface, which contributes to the energy match and multistep jump mechanism. Ternary solar cells based on the doped polymer exhibit better VOC, FF and PCE with weakened JSC. Our theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental results. The global investigation of ternary solar cells can be used to interpret experiments and is viewed as an effective method for screening high-performance solar cells.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Three novel pyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine derivatives of 4,9-dialkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine-5,10-dione, 10-alkoxy-4-alkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridin-5-one, and 5,10-dialkoxypyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine were synthesized as building blocks of copolymers Pa, Pb and Pc, giving relatively large band gaps of 2.13, 2.19 and 2.21 eV, respectively. Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were fabricated in a typical device configuration by utilizing the resulting polymers as the donor of the active layer. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.47% was achieved from the Pa-based device without any additives or thermal annealing. A further improved PCE of 4.54% was achieved in inverted device architecture, and it is hitherto the highest efficiency of BHJ polymer solar cells using a donor polymer with a band gap above 2.1 eV.

Abstract:Ternary all-polymer solar cells are fabricated using an N2200 acceptor and two donor polymers (PF2 and PM2) with complementary absorption. The major donor PF2 is a relatively wide bandgap polymer that contributes the most photon absorption in the UV-vis region while the second donor PM2 improves the light harvesting due to its strong absorption in the near-IR region. By carefully tuning the ratio of two donor polymers, the best ratio of 9 : 1 : 5 (PF2 : PM2 : N2200) is achieved and shows a PCE of 6.90%, which is better than two binary devices. This work demonstrates an effective strategy of utilizing a narrow bandgap donor polymer as the second donor to improve the performance of all-polymer solar cells.

Abstract:A liquid crystal small molecule donor BTR-Cl, which has strong self-assembly and crystallinity, is used as the third component to construct nonfullerenes ternary solar cells together with a broad-band donor polymer D18-Cl and a low-band acceptor N3. The introduction of BTR-Cl enhances the morphology, exciton dissociation, and charge mobility of the ternary blends, improves the short-circuit current density and fill factor, and results in an efficiency of up to 17.92%. Further results show that BTR-Cl acts as an energy level mediator, fluorescence resonance energy transfer and charge transfer intermediary, and morphology modifier in ternary blends. They work synergistically in ternary blends to optimize the electrical and morphological properties, resulting in enhanced photovoltaic performance and improved stability and detection performance. It brings vitality to the field of organic solar cells (OSCs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs) research.

Abstract:Ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) are the feasible and efficient strategy to achieve the high-performance OSCs. It is of great significance to develop a superior third component candidate for constructing efficient ternary OSCs. In this work, we intelligently designed and synthesized a dimerized small molecule donor by connecting two asymmetric small molecule donors with the vinyl group, which is named DSMD-βV. This innovative oligomeric molecule DSMD-βV not only exhibits the complementary absorption and the cascade energy level arrangement with PM6 and BTP-eC9, but also regulates the phase separation micromorphology based on PM6:BTP-eC9. Consequently, PM6:DSMD-βV:BTP-eC9 based ternary device exhibits the improved exciton dissociation, charge transport and decreased recombination, thus achieving a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.26 %, surpassing PM6:BTP-eC9 based binary (17.63 %). This work indicates that the dimerized small molecule donor is able to become a promising third component candidate, which also opens up a unique idea for the construction of efficient ternary organic solar cells.

Abstract:Ternary approaches to solar cell design utilizing a small bandgap nonfullerene acceptor as the near infrared absorber to increase the short‐circuit current density always decreases the open‐circuit voltage. Herein, a highly efficient polymer solar cell with an impressive efficiency of 16.28 ± 0.20% enabled by an effective voltage‐increased ternary blended fullerene‐free material approach is reported. In this approach, the structural similarity between the host and the higher‐LUMO‐level guest enables the two acceptors to be synergized, obtaining increased open‐circuit voltage and fill factor and a small increase of short‐circuit current density. The same beneficial effects are demonstrated by using two host binary systems. The homogeneous fine film morphologies and the π–π stacking patterns of the host blend are well maintained, while larger donor and acceptor phases and increased lamellar crystallinity, increased charge mobilities, and reduced monomolecular recombination can be achieved upon addition of the guest nonfullerene acceptor. The increased charge mobilities and reduced monomolecular recombination not only contribute to the improved fill factor but also enable the best devices to be fabricated with a relatively thicker ternary blended active layer (110 vs 100 nm). This, combined with the absorption from the added guest acceptor, contribute to the increased short‐circuit current.

Abstract:Introducing a third component into organic bulk heterojunction solar cells has become an effective strategy to improve photovoltaic performance. Meanwhile, the rapid development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has pushed the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) to a higher standard. Herein, a series of fullerene-free ternary solar cells are fabricated based on a wide bandgap acceptor, IDTT-M, together with a wide bandgap donor polymer PM6 and a narrow bandgap NFA Y6. Insights from the morphological and electronic characterizations reveal that IDTT-M has been incorporated into Y6 domains without disrupting its molecular packing and sacrificing its electron mobility and work synergistically with Y6 to regulate the packing pattern of PM6, leading to enhanced hole mobility and suppressed recombination. IDTT-M further functions as an energy-level mediator that increases open-circuit voltage (VOC) in ternary devices. In addition, efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between IDTT-M and Y6 provides a non-radiative pathway for facilitating exciton dissociation and charge collection. As a result, the optimized ternary device features a significantly improved PCE up to 16.63% with simultaneously enhanced short-circuit current (JSC), VOC, and fill factor (FF).

Abstract:Both ternary copolymerization and ternary blending are effective methods to fine-tune polymer structure and manipulate thin-film morphology to improve device performance. In this work, three D-A-A-A (D: donor, A: acceptor) terpolymer donors (FY1, FY2, and FY3) are synthesized by introducing BDD (1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-5,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione) units into the D-A alternating copolymer PM6 backbone. Owing to the promoted conjugated planarity and excellent absorption of BDD, the obtained terpolymers display an extended absorption range and enhanced π-π stacking orientation, which is a promising third component in ternary device. As a result, the optimal FY1:PM6:BTP-eC9-based ternary device afforded an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 18.52%, owing to the efficient charge transport, negligible energy loss, and suitable domain size. The result provides an efficient method to obtain high-performance polymer solar cells by using analogous polymer donors in ternary device.
Ternary Polymer Solar Cells Based-on Two Polymer Donors with Similar HOMO Levels and an Organic Acceptor with Absorption Extending to 850 Nm

Abstract:Ternary blending is an effective way to realize higher short circuit current density (J(sc)) and higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the polymer solar cells (PSCs) by broadening and enhancing light harvests. In this work, we fabricated the ternary PSCs by using a narrow bandgap n-type organic semiconductor (n-OS) BT-IC with absorption edge extending to 850 nm as acceptor and two absorption-complementary conjugated polymer J51 and PTB7-Th with similar HOMO energy levels as donor. The ternary PSCs based on J51: PTB7-Th: BT-IC (0.5:0.2:1, w/w) without additive treatment demonstrated a higher PCE of 10.32% with a V-oc of 0.79 V, a higher J(sc) of 19.55 mA cm(-2), and a FF of 67.0%. In addition, the morphology of the ternary blend active layer of the devices is quite stable after long-term thermal annealing at 130 degrees C.

Abstract:The working horses for the drastically improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) were the small-band-gap molecular non-fullerene acceptors. This development not only removed the low performance obstacle for OSCs but also raised needs for wide-band-gap polymers for donor/acceptor mix with complimentary absorptions. Benzodithiophene (BDT) is one of the mostly used unit for constructing donor polymers. Here, we introduced one type of donor polymer with two BDT units placed perpendicularly. This exploration is aimed to reduce the complexity of molecule design, potentially to reduce the cost of donor materials. We also explored the halogenation of BDT side group to optimize the performances of the copolymers. The chlorinated donor polymer PvBDT-Cl delivered a decent PCE of 8.23% with Y6-T. This work explored the possibility of using only BDT unit to construct high performance donor polymers, which is a crucial insight for future low-cost donor polymer design.
