Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">High‐performance nonfullerene ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with two polymer donors are less frequently reported because of the limited numbers of efficient polymer donors with good compatibility. Herein, a wide‐bandgap polymer P1 with a deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level is incorporated as the third component into the benchmark PM6:Y6 binary system to fabricate ternary OSCs. The introduction of P1 not only leads to extended absorption coverage and forms a cascade‐like energy level alignment but also shows excellent compatibility with PM6, resulting in a favorable morphology in the ternary blend. More importantly, P1 possesses a deeper HOMO level (−5.6 eV) than most well‐known donor polymers, which enables resulting ternary OSCs with an improved open‐circuit voltage. As a result, the optimized ternary OSCs with 40 wt% P1 in donors achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.2% with a small nonradiative recombination loss of 0.23 eV, which is among the highest values of ternary OSCs based on two polymer donors. In addition, the ternary OSCs show a broad composition tolerance with a high PCE of over 14% throughout the whole blend ratios. These results provide an effective approach to fabricate efficient ternary OSCs by synergizing two wide‐bandgap polymer donors.</section>

Abstract:Here, we combine two donor polymers with a relatively short synthesis method and fabricate ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) with a high efficiency and a decent figure-of-merit. A series of characterizations show that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is the result of the coupling and competition of PTQ10 and PTVT‑T, where the molecular packing and phase separation motif of PTQ10 is broken but the strong aggregation of PTVT‑T is suppressed, resulting in efficient charge transport and collection, as well as suppressed bimolecular recombination. Moreover, a previously reported solvent-vapor-assisted casting method, taken as an understanding-guided optimization, pushes the optimal system’s efficiency to 19.11%. Furthermore, PTVT‑T-containing systems clearly show better light soaking and thermal stability than the PTQ10 binary control system, benefiting from the durable polymer matrix. Our work provides a useful approach for developing efficient, stable, and low-cost OSCs based on state-of-the-art donor/acceptor systems through morphology control of the ternary design.

Abstract:Ternary strategyopens a simple avenue to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). The introduction of wide bandgap polymer donors (PDs) as third component canbetter utilize sunlight and improve the mechanical and thermal stability of active layer. However, efficient ternary OSCs (TOSCs) with two PDs are rarely reported due to inferior compatibility and shortage of efficient PDs match with acceptors. Herein, two PDs-(PBB-F and PBB-Cl) are adopted in the dual-PDs ternary systems to explore the underlying mechanisms and improve their photovoltaic performance. The findings demonstrate that the third components exhibit excellent miscibility with PM6 and are embedded in the host donor to form alloy-like phase. A more profound mechanism for enhancing efficiency through dual mechanisms, that are the guest energy transfer to PM6 and charge transport at the donor/acceptor interface, has been proposed. Consequently, the PM6:PBB-Cl:BTP-eC9 TOSCs achieve PCE of over 19%. Furthermore, the TOSCs exhibit better thermal stability than that of binary OSCs due to the reduction in spatial site resistance resulting from a more tightly entangled long-chain structure. This work not only provides an effective approach to fabricate high-performance TOSCs, but also demonstrates the importance of developing dual compatible PD materials.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Efficient ternary blend organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) are built based on a D18-Cl:Y6 host system and star polymer donor PM6 as the third component. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 16.89% is achieved in D18-Cl:Y6 host binary OPVs, with a short-circuit current density (JSC) of 25.31 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.878 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 75.81%. Upon incorporating appropriate PM6 in active layers, the PCE of optimal ternary blend OPVs can be increased to 17.61%, benefiting from a JSC of 26.35 mA cm−2, a VOC of 0.871 V, and an FF of 76.82%. Polymers D18-Cl and PM6 have good compatibility and similar highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels, which enable to form D18-Cl:PM6 alloyed states for efficient hole transport in ternary blend active layers. Meanwhile, trap density in ternary blend active layers is decreased by incorporating PM6, which is conducive to weaken charge recombination in ternary blend active layers. The gradually varied VOC values of ternary blend OPVs can be well explained from the varied HOMO levels of D18-Cl:PM6 alloyed states. The results indicate that two compatible polymer donors with similar HOMO levels have great potential in achieving efficient ternary blend OPVs. </section>

Abstract:Using multiple donor polymers is a simple means to broaden the absorption range of organic solar cells (OSCs). Yet, achieving improved photovoltaic and mechanical properties in OSCs on dual polymers has not met with success so far. Here, we address this challenge by introducing a low-cost and 2D semi-paracrystalline conjugated polymer PTQ10 as the second polymer donor to the benchmark PM6:N3 blend. Both improved photovoltaic and mechanical performance were realized in the optimized PM6:PTQ10:N3-based OSCs at a polymer blend ratio of 4:1. The influence of the second polymer on the mechanical and photovoltaic properties of the ternary blend system was examined via grazing-incidence X-ray scattering and thin-film mechanical measurements, offering an in-depth understanding of the inner relationships between the film structure and mechanical properties in such ternary blend systems. Crucially, we were able to predict the composition dependence of the elastic modulus via a theoretical model for these ternary blend films based on dual-donor polymers. This work set a new guide for fabricating highly efficient and stretchable solar cells from multiple polymer blends.

Abstract:Adopting a ternary strategy is an effective approach to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) in organic solar cells (OSCs). Previous research on highly efficient ternary systems has predominantly focused on those based on highly crystalline dual small molecule acceptors. However, limited attention has been given to ternary systems utilizing dual polymer donors. Herein, by incorporating the fluorine and alkylsilyl substitution, a new polymer donor named PX1 is developed, which demonstrates strong crystallinity and excellent miscibility with polymer PM6. Moreover, PX1 broadens and enhances the absorption properties of the PM6:L8-BO blends, and its molecular orbital energy level is situated between those of PM6 and L8-BO, highlighting its suitability as a third component. Introducing 20% PX1 into the PM6:L8-BO system resulted in a high PCE of 18.82%. PX1 effectively suppresses charge recombination and reduces energy losses, while also serving as a morphology modulator that enhances the crystallization and improves the molecular packing order of the active layer by shortening the π-π stacking distance and extending crystalline coherence length. These factors collectively contribute to the performance improvements in ternary devices. This study demonstrates that employing a dual polymer donor strategy is a promising approach for achieving high-performance ternary OSCs.

Abstract:The field of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) has experienced rapid development during the past few years, mainly driven by the design of efficient polymer acceptors (PAs). However, the polymer/polymer blend systems still lag far behind polymer/small molecule acceptor counterparts in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Here, we designed a near-infrared PA PY2F-T and paired it with polymer donor PM6 to fabricate all-PSCs with 15.0% PCE. Afterwards, PYT as the third component was introduced into the PM6:PY2F-T host system. Because of the complementary absorption bands and finely tuned microstructures of the ternary blend, the PCE is improved up to 17.2%, with the external quantum efficiency over 80% in visible and near-infrared spectral regions. Impressively, the ternary blend exhibited less energy loss, better light-soaking and photo-thermal stabilities than did the corresponding binary systems. This work promotes the development of high-performance ternary all-polymer systems and heralds a brighter future for accelerating the possible applications of all-PSCs.

Abstract:In this work, a series of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) were prepared with polymer PM6 as a donor and two non-fullerene materials, BTP-eC9 and ITIC-Th, with excellent compatibility as acceptors. The open-circuit voltage (V OC) of ternary OSCs is found to monotonically increase with increasing content of ITIC-Th, implying the formation of an alloying state between BTP-eC9 and ITIC-Th. Furthermore, the incorporation of ITIC-Th can effectively minimize energy loss, which effectively improves the V OC of ternary OSCs. Consequently, a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.7% with a short-circuit current density (J SC) of 28.0 mA cm–2, a V OC of 0.87 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 77.0% is achieved from the optimal ternary OSCs with 15 wt % ITIC-Th in acceptors. Comprehensive characterizations show that the enhanced J SC and FF are likely due to enhanced photon harvesting, effective exciton dissociation, and balanced charge transport in the optimal ternary active layers. The findings provide a hopeful way to further improve the OSC performance by employing a ternary strategy with two compatible non-fullerene materials as acceptors.

Abstract:Polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs) have recently drawn much attention and rapidly boost the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). In this study, a low-cost polymer donor PTQ10 was employed as the third component (the second polymer donor) into the PBDB-T:PTPBT-ET0.1 system (where PTPBT-ET0.1 was a previously reported PSMA), and the ternary all-PSC achieved higher PCE of 14.56%. The component of PTQ10 not only leads to the extended absorption coverage but also shows excellent compatibility with PBDB-T. In addition, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of the PTQ10 donor is slightly lower than that of PBDB-T, leading to a higher open-circuit voltage. The performance of the ternary all-PSCs is primarily improved by the enhanced short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc), which can be attributed to the enhanced exciton dissociation and balanced charge transport in the presence of PTQ10. Abstract:To further improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymer solar cells (PSCs), it is an essential and significantly challenging issue to synergistically minimize non-radiative energy loss and optimize morphology. In this work, ternary PSCs are fabricated by incorporating a small molecule donor, namely BTTzR, into the state-of-the-art PM6:Y6 binary system. Detailed investigations suggest that BTTzR can form energy cascade with binary components to facilitate charge transfer. Furthermore, the integration of BTTzR can enhance crystallization and domain purity of the binary blend, and effectively suppress the aggregation of Y6, which ultimately leads to more efficient charge transport and lower non-radiative energy loss (ΔEnr). As a result, compared to the binary devices with PCE of 15.8% and ΔEnr of 0.23 eV, the ternary PSCs with 20% BTTzR contents achieved a significantly enhanced performance with PCE of 17.7% and lower ΔEnr of 0.19 eV, which are among the best results reported in the literatures to date. Therefore, this work not only offers a high-efficiency ternary blend system but also provides an efficient strategy to synergistically minimize non-radiative energy loss and optimize the morphology for the development of PSCs.

Abstract:For the first time, we combined terpolymerization and regioisomerization strategies to develop novel polymer donors to overcome the difficulty of improving organic solar cells (OSCs) performance. Two novel isomeric units, TTO and TTI, were obtained and incorporated into the PM6 backbone via random copolymerization to form a series of terpolymers. Interestingly, we found that different chlorine (Cl) substituent positions can significantly change the molecular planarity and electrostatic potential (ESP) owing to the steric hindrance effect of the heavy Cl atom, which leads to different molecular aggregation behaviors and miscibility between the donor and acceptor. The TTO unit features a higher number of multiple S⋅⋅⋅O non‐covalent interactions, more positive ESP, and fewer isomer structures than TTI. As a result, the terpolymer PM6‐TTO‐10 exhibited a much better molecular coplanarity, stronger crystallinity, more obvious aggregation behavior, and proper phase separation in the blend film, which are conducive to more efficient exciton dissociation and charge transfer. Consequently, the PM6‐TTO‐10:BTP‐eC9‐based OSCs achieved a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.37% with an outstanding fill factor of 79.97%, which are among the highest values reported for terpolymer‐based OSCs. Abstract:The ternary strategy, introducing a third component into a binary blend, opens a simple and promising avenue to improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). The judicious selection of an appropriate third component, without sacrificing the photocurrent and voltage output of the OSC, is of significant importance in ternary devices. Herein, highly efficient OSCs fabricated using a ternary approach are demonstrated, wherein a novel non-fullerene acceptor L8-BO-F is designed and incorporated into the PM6:BTP-eC9 blend. The three components show complementary absorption spectra and cascade energy alignment. L8-BO-F and BTP-eC9 are found to form a homogeneous mixed phase, which improves the molecular packing of both the donor and acceptor materials, and optimizes the ternary blend morphology. Moreover, the addition of L8-BO-F into the binary blend suppresses the non-radiative recombination, thus leading to a reduced voltage loss. Consequently, concurrent increases in open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and fill factor are realized, resulting in an unprecedented PCE of 18.66% (certified value of 18.2%), which represents the highest efficiency values reported for both single-junction and tandem OSCs so far.

Abstract:Using two structurally similar polymer acceptors in constructing high‐efficiency ternary all‐polymer solar cells is a widely acknowledged strategy. However, the focus thus far has not been on how polymer acceptor(s) tune the aggregation of polymer donors, thus furthering film morphology and device performance (efficiency and stability). Herein, w e report that matching the celebrity acceptor PY‐IT and donor PBQx‐TCl results in enhanced H‐aggregation in PBQx‐TCl, which can be finely tuned by controlling the amount of the second acceptor PY‐IV. Consequently, the efficiency‐optimized PY‐IV weight ratio (0.2/1.2) leads to state‐of‐the‐art power conversion efficiency of 18.81%, wherein light‐illuminated operational stability is also enhanced along with well‐protected thermal stability. Such enhancements in the efficiency and operational and thermal stabilities of solar cells can be attributed to morphology optimization and desired glass transition temperature of the target active layer based on comprehensive characterization. In addition to being a high‐power conversion efficiency case for all‐polymer solar cells, these enhancements are also a successful attempt for using combined acceptors to tune donor aggregation toward optimal morphology, which provides a theoretical basis for the construction of other types of organic photovoltaics beyond all‐polymer solar cells. Abstract:Nowadays, improving the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) is still the most concerned issue. Ternary strategy can effectively improve the PCE while maintaining the single junction device structure from well-developed material systems. With 15% wt ITC-2Br1 in the ternary system, the device achieved a best PCE of 16.6%, which is significantly higher than that of its binary counterpart (15.6%). Through the study of neat and blend films, it is found that ITC-2Br1 and Y6 show good miscibility and the absorption of ternary blend film almost cover the whole range from visible and near-IR regions. The optimized ternary device shows an alloy-like working model with improved carrier lifetime and enhanced charge collection efficiency. This work provides a good example for the third component selection in ternary system, and the ternary strategy is a facile and effective method to boost the device performance of OSCs.

Abstract:The ternary structure that combines fullerene and nonfullerene acceptors in a photoactive layer is demonstrated as an effective approach for boosting the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, highly efficient ternary OSCs comprising a wide‐bandgap polymer donor (PBT1‐C), a narrow‐bandgap nonfullerene acceptor (IT‐2F), and a typical fullerene derivative (PC71BM) are reported. It is found that the addition of PC71BM into the PBT1‐C:IT‐2F blend not only increases the device efficiency up to 12.2%, but also improves the ambient stability of the OSCs. Detailed investigations indicate that the improvement in photovoltaic performance benefits from synergistic effects of increased photon‐harvesting, enhanced charge separation and transport, suppressed trap‐assisted recombination, and optimized film morphology. Moreover, it is noticed that such a ternary system exhibits excellent tolerance to the PC71BM component, for which PCEs over 11.2% can be maintained throughout the whole blend ratios, higher than that (11.0%) of PBT1‐C:IT‐2F binary reference device.

Abstract:In this work, the properties and performance of three structurally similar non‐fullerene acceptors (named BTP‐Ph, BTP‐Th, and BTP‐C11) possessing different side chains on the β‐positions of the thienothiophene units of the Y6 molecule are systematically studied. The steric and electronic effects of these side chains on the blend morphology and device performance based on the PTQ10 donor polymer are investigated. It is found that the thiophene and benzene units on the side chains introduce more steric hindrance and thus slightly reduce the crystallinity of the molecule. However, an interesting matching trend with the PTQ10 donor that appears to better match with the less crystalline molecules is observed. Overall, PTQ10:BTP‐Ph delivers the highest performance of 17.1% due to the suitable phase separation among three blends. Next, a ternary strategy is explored by incorporating BTP‐Th/BTP‐C11 with better molecular packing into PTQ10:BTP‐Ph, which successfully extends photon response, enhances charge transport, and suppresses charge recombination compared with the binary blend. Due to these synergistic effects, the ternary device based on PTQ10:BTP‐Ph:BTP‐Th achieves an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 17.6% with a fill factor of 78.8%, which is the highest value of PTQ10‐based devices to date.

Abstract:The ternary blend strategy has shown great potential to improve the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Usually, adopting two acceptors with similar chemical structures shows good compatibility but limited enhancement in performance, whereas adopting two acceptors with different chemical structures always has a compositional sensitivity issue. Herein, a highly efficient ternary OSC with an enhanced fill factor (FF) and a broad compositional tolerance is demonstrated by introducing the fused‐ring acceptor IT‐M to a binary blend based on an unfused‐core acceptor HC‐PCIC and polymer donor PBDB‐TF. Detailed studies on the optical, electrical, and morphological properties of ternary blends reveal the process of charge dynamics and work mechanisms in the ternary device. It is found that the addition of IT‐M into the PBDB‐TF:HC‐PCIC binary blend not only adapts to the parallel‐like model, but also optimizes the morphology and domain sizes in the ternary blend, resulting in a reduced trap‐assisted recombination and suppressed bimolecular recombination. Consequently, open‐circuit voltage (Voc), short‐circuit current density (Jsc), and FF are synergistically enhanced, leading to an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.34% with a high Voc of 0.88 V, an increased Jsc of 18.69 mA cm−2, and an enhanced FF of 73.82% for the ternary device with 5% IT‐M content. Moreover, the PCEs of ternary OSCs remain above 11% within an IT‐M ratio of 2.5–50%, exhibiting a broad compositional tolerance, which is rarely reported in fullerene‐free ternary OSCs.

Abstract:Both ternary copolymerization and ternary blending are effective methods to fine-tune polymer structure and manipulate thin-film morphology to improve device performance. In this work, three D-A-A-A (D: donor, A: acceptor) terpolymer donors (FY1, FY2, and FY3) are synthesized by introducing BDD (1,3-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-5,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-c:4,5-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione) units into the D-A alternating copolymer PM6 backbone. Owing to the promoted conjugated planarity and excellent absorption of BDD, the obtained terpolymers display an extended absorption range and enhanced π-π stacking orientation, which is a promising third component in ternary device. As a result, the optimal FY1:PM6:BTP-eC9-based ternary device afforded an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 18.52%, owing to the efficient charge transport, negligible energy loss, and suitable domain size. The result provides an efficient method to obtain high-performance polymer solar cells by using analogous polymer donors in ternary device.
