Abstract:The working horses for the drastically improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) were the small-band-gap molecular non-fullerene acceptors. This development not only removed the low performance obstacle for OSCs but also raised needs for wide-band-gap polymers for donor/acceptor mix with complimentary absorptions. Benzodithiophene (BDT) is one of the mostly used unit for constructing donor polymers. Here, we introduced one type of donor polymer with two BDT units placed perpendicularly. This exploration is aimed to reduce the complexity of molecule design, potentially to reduce the cost of donor materials. We also explored the halogenation of BDT side group to optimize the performances of the copolymers. The chlorinated donor polymer PvBDT-Cl delivered a decent PCE of 8.23% with Y6-T. This work explored the possibility of using only BDT unit to construct high performance donor polymers, which is a crucial insight for future low-cost donor polymer design.

Abstract:In this article, both novel wide bandgap (WBG) copolymers, namely, PBTTBO-BT, and PBTTBO-TVT, based on a dicarboxylic ester side-chains substituted thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (BTTBO) unit as weak electron-deficient building skeleton and a simple and low-cost 2,2′-bithiophene (BT) or (E)-1,2- di(thiophen-2-yl)ethylene (TVT) as electron-rich donor unit, were successfully synthesized and applicated as the photovoltaic donor materials for fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). With the replacement of BT with TVT group, the resulting copolymer PBTTBO-TVT shows higher carrier mobility, broad absorption and better morphologies of blend films, which is mainly ascribed to better coplanarity and π-conjugated system of TVT unit. Under an optimized blend ratio of copolymer:PC71BM (1:1, w/w), the PC71BM-based PSCs with PBTTBO-TVT as donor, obtained a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.05%, noticeably higher than that of the PCE of 5.78% in device based on PBTTBO-BT:PC71BM, which is owing to an increased short circuit current density (Jsc) of 12.96 mA cm−2 and fill factor (FF) of 66.34% simultaneously. In considering the merits of low-cost and high efficiency, this type of copolymer should be a hopeful donor material for efficient fullerene-PSCs.

Abstract:Two wide bandgap conjugated polymers (PTCO8 and PTCO1) with different side chains, composed of alkylcarbonyl-substituted thiophene (TOC) as the electron-withdrawing unit and two-dimension benzodithiophene (BDT) as the electron-donating unit, are developed for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Relative to non-carbonyl-substituted control polymer PTC8, PTCO8 and PTCO1 exhibit a red-shifted absorption and deeper-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level. When blended with ITIC, the as-cast PTCO1-based devices yield a power conversion efficiency of up to 9.33% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.95 V, a short-circuit current density of 16.91 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 57.9%, outperforming those of PTC8-based devices (4.04%) and PTCO8-based devices (5.91%). This work demonstrates that the carbonyl group is a promising electron-deficient moiety to construct wide-bandgap polymers for non-fullerene PSCs. Adjusting the length of side chains is a feasible strategy to improve PSC performance further.

Abstract:Incorporation of electron-deficient units into polymer backbones is a promising strategy to enlarge the bandgaps of polymer donor materials. Herein, two wide-bandgap (WBG) polymer donors (P1 and P3) are designed and synthesized by using two different electron-deficient units of 5,10-dihydrodithieno[3,2- c :3′,2′- h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9-dione (TND) with different side-chains, and 5,6-difluoro-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2 H -benzo[ d ][1,2,3]triazole. Due to the strong electron-withdrawing ability of both two building blocks, the two copolymers exhibit large optical bandgaps and low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, which are matched with the narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptor of L8-BO. The alkyl chains on the polymer backbones can affect molecular packing and charge transport properties of the copolymers. P3 with 2-butyloctyl side-chains exhibits an enhanced crystallinity and a preferable face-on molecular orientation. When blended with L8-BO, the best P3-based polymer solar cell (PSC) displays a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.56% with an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 0.742 V, a short-circuit current density ( J SC ) of 22.80 mA cm −2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 74.30%. However, the best-performing P1-based PSC shows a relatively low PCE of 10.37%. This study suggests that the polymer donor materials based on two electron-deficient units have great potential in fabricating efficient nonfullerene PSCs.

Abstract:To maximize the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs), polymer donors and nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) should be designed with complementarily optical and electronic properties as well as desirable morphological features. Currently, high-performance polymer donors are mainly constructed by alternating copolymerization of electron -rich (D) and electron -deficient (A) units. Here, we demonstrate that acceptor 1 - pi-acceptor 2 - pi (A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi)-type polymer donors constructed by copolymerization of two different A units can achieve comparable photovoltaic properties with those of D pi-A- pi-type counterparts. By using the ladder -type 4,10-bis(2-hexyldecyl)-thieno[2",3":5,6]pyrido[3,4-g]thieno-[3,2-c]isoquinoline-5,11-dione as A 1 unit, difluorobenzotriazole or benzodithiophene-4,8-dione as A 2 unit, and thiophene unit as the pi bridge, two A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type copolymers, P03 and P07, are successfully synthesized. Due to the weakened intramolecular charge -transfer effect, P03 and P07 exhibit wide bandgaps of 1.88 and 1.74 eV, respectively. In combination with the NFA of L8 -BO, the P03:L8-BO-based blend shows superior crystallinity and uniform phase -separated morphology thereby leading to a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.03 % in comparison with the P07:L8-BObased blend which shows a PCE of 9.84 %. Notably, the 15.03 % efficiency is by far the highest value for PSCs based on A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type polymer donors. These results provide useful guidance for the future design of high-performance donor copolymers for PSCs.

Abstract:The performance of a wide-band gap copolymer donor PDTPO-BDTT in nonfullerene solar cells was investigated. These solar cells presented broad photoresponse and high short-circuit current density. PDTPO-BDTT:IT-4F and PDTPO-BDTT:NNFA-4F solar cells with more efficient photoluminescence quenching and better film morphology gave decent power conversion efficiencies of 10.96 and 10.04%, respectively, which are much higher than those of the previously reported PDTPO-BDTT:fullerene solar cells.

Abstract:Two new donoracceptor alternating wide band gap copolymers, PTTDBC-PhQC8 and PTTDBC-BTC12, based on an electron-rich tetrathienodibenzocarbazole (TTDBC) donor have been designed and synthesized, wherein two additional thienyl rings are fused into a 2,7-dithienylcarbazole skeleton to reinforce the structural coplanarity and rigidity of polymers. The quinoid thiophene in TTDBC can endow not only a wide optical band gap (similar to 1.9 eV) but also a deep HOMO (similar to 5.3 eV) for the resulting polymers. The conventional configuration solar cells based on PTTDBC-BTC12 exhibit a large V-oc of 0.91 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.30% (with a Jsc of 9.27 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.51), while a slightly higher PCE of 4.50% can be achieved for the inverted structure devices. We believe that these wide band gap polymers have potential to be used for tandem cell applications.

Abstract:In the past few years, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has improved rapidly with the milestone value exceeding 18%, primarily owing to the development of novel non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) as well as matching polymer donors. The molecular structure of a polymer donor fundamentally determines its molecular packing (crystal structure and morphology) and optoelectronic properties, which influence the photovoltaic processes and the ultimate PCE of the OSC device. The structure-property-cell performance relationships of polymer donors with respect to the specific acceptor are very complex, involving numerous parameters, but are extremely important towards the development of high-performance polymer donors to achieve high PCE. This review provides a timely analysis of the top-performing wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors that have been developed to match the three most representative narrow bandgap NFAs, ITIC, IT-4F, and Y6, in terms of their structural design, fine-tuning of their optoelectronic properties, and control of the morphology and crystallinity of their blends with NFAs. We hope that this article provides deeper insight into the structure-property-cell performance relationships of polymer donors and a collection of useful guidelines and strategies for the design and processing of novel polymer donors for matching with NFAs for achieving ultrahigh performance OSCs.
Nonhalogen Solvent‐Processed Asymmetric Wide‐Bandgap Polymers for Nonfullerene Organic Solar Cells with over 10% Efficiency

Abstract:Two new wide-bandgap D-A-pi copolymer donor materials, PBDT-2TC and PBDT-S-2TC, based on benzodithiophene and asymmetric bithiophene with one carboxylate (2TC) substituent are synthesized by a facile approach for fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs). The combination of one carboxylate-substituted thiophene with one thiophene bridge in the backbone substantially reduces the steric hindrance, thereby favoring a planar geometry for efficient charge transport and molecular packing. A reasonable highest-occupied-molecular-orbital energy level in relation to that of the acceptor and balanced hole and electron transport are observed for both polymers. This asymmetric structure unit is flexible and versatile, allowing the absorption, energy levels, and morphology of the blend films to be tailored. Fullerene-free OSCs based on PBDT-S-2TC:ITIC achieve a high power conversion efficiency of 10.12%. More impressively, a successful nonhalogen solvent-processed solar cell with 9.55% efficiency is also achieved, which is one of the highest values for a fullerene-free OSC processed using an ecofriendly solvent.

Abstract:Although wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors are widely used in non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs), only a few WBG polymers exhibited high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Developing WBG donors with ideal complementary absorption with narrow bandgap non-fullerene acceptors is critical to further improving the photovoltaic performance of OSCs. Here, we provide an effective strategy to widen the bandgap ( Eg ) of polymers by increasing the curvature of the polymer donor backbone structure and compare it with the fluorination strategy. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that the fluorination strategy reduced the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of PBDT-DT2FBT with little effect on the Eg . In contrast, the polymer PBDT-DTfBT, with a large backbone curvature, exhibited a reduced HOMO energy level and a significantly increased LUMO energy level, resulting in a significant increase in the optical Eg of 0.19 eV. The PBDT-DTfBT-based device achieved a high PCE of 15.89%, which far exceeded the PCEs of the PBDT-DTBT (9.84%) and PBDT-DT2FBT-based devices (8.02%). This work could guide the design of high-performance WBG donors.

These polymers exhibit complementary bandgaps for efficient sunlight harvesting and suitable frontier energy levels for exciton dissociation when paired with the extensively studied NFA, Y6. Among these donors, PBDTF‐TSBT‐C16 demonstrates the highest hole mobility and a relatively low highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level, attributed to the incorporation of thiophene spacers and electron‐withdrawing fluorine substituents. OSC devices based on the blend of PBDTF‐TSBT‐C16:Y6 achieve the highest PCE of 13.21%, with a Jsc of 26.83 mA cm−2, a Voc of 0.80 V, and an FF of 0.62. Notably, the Voc×Jsc product reaches 21.46 mW cm−2, demonstrating the potential of TS as an electron acceptor building block for the development of high‐performance wide bandgap polymer donors in OSCs. Designing High-Performance Wide Bandgap Polymer Donors by the Synergistic Effect of Introducing Carboxylate and Fluoro Substituents

Abstract:Controlling the energy levels and aggregation behavior of conjugated polymers is pivotal for constructing high-performance organic solar cells. To achieve this goal, we designed and synthesized three D–A alternating wide bandgap polymers (reg-PThE, reg-PThE-1F, and reg-PThE-2F) by synergistic introduction of carboxylate and fluoro substituents. Further investigations demonstrate that the reg-PThE-1F:BTP-eC9-4F blend film could form nanoscale phase separation, and the corresponding devices exhibit improved exciton dissociation and charge collection and higher and more balanced charge transport mobilities. Hence, an impressive PCE of 16.40% can be achieved for reg-PThE-1F:BTP-eC9-4F-based devices; especially, the PCEs of tenary devices are further improved to 17.78% or 18.64% by adding reg-PThE-1F into different binary systems. These results are among the highest PCEs based on polymer donors with carboxylate-substituted thiophene. Our work paves an efficient way to designing high-performance conjugated polymer by synergistic introduction of carboxylate and fluoro substituents.

Abstract:Three regioregular benzodithiophene-based donor-donor (D-D)-type polymers (PBDTT, PBDTT1Cl, and PBDTT2Cl) are designed, synthesized, and used as donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs). Because of the weak intramolecular charge-transfer effect, these polymers exhibit large optical bandgaps (>2.0 eV). Among these three polymers, PBDTT1Cl exhibits more ordered and closer molecular stacking, and its devices demonstrate higher and more balanced charge mobilities and a longer charge-separated state lifetime. As a result of these comprehensive benefits, PBDTT1Cl-based OSCs give a very impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.10% with a low nonradiative energy loss (0.19 eV). Moreover, PBDTT1Cl also possesses a low figure-of-merit value and good universality to match with different acceptors. This work provides a simply and efficient strategy to design low-cost high-performance polymer donor materials.

Abstract:Ternary all-polymer solar cells are fabricated using an N2200 acceptor and two donor polymers (PF2 and PM2) with complementary absorption. The major donor PF2 is a relatively wide bandgap polymer that contributes the most photon absorption in the UV-vis region while the second donor PM2 improves the light harvesting due to its strong absorption in the near-IR region. By carefully tuning the ratio of two donor polymers, the best ratio of 9 : 1 : 5 (PF2 : PM2 : N2200) is achieved and shows a PCE of 6.90%, which is better than two binary devices. This work demonstrates an effective strategy of utilizing a narrow bandgap donor polymer as the second donor to improve the performance of all-polymer solar cells.

Abstract:In addition to high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and good stability, the low-cost of photovoltaic materials is also very important for the practical application of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, we synthesized a carboxylate substituted pyrazine-based electron-deficient building block (DTCPz) with a simple structure and low synthetic cost, and then developed a novel wide bandgap polymer donor PFBCPZ. Due to the synergistic electron-withdrawing effects of the fluorination in donor unit (BDT-TF) and esterification and C=N double-bond in DTCPz unit, PFBCPZ shows a deeper HOMO level of −5.60 eV, a strong intermolecular π-π interaction, good crystallinity and stacking, and high hole-mobility of 2.11 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1. Matched with a low bandgap acceptor IT-4F, excellent charge transfer, weak recombination, and small non-radiative energy loss in OSCs was achieved, resulting in an impressive fill factor of 0.785 and a high open-circuit voltage of 0.92 V. As a result, a PCE of up to 15.3% is obtained in OSCs, which is the highest value in the IT-4F-based binary OSCs so far and indicates that low-cost DTCPz with a simple structure is a promising building block to construct high-performance polymer donors for application in efficient OSCs.
