Abstract:Ternary all-polymer solar cells are fabricated using an N2200 acceptor and two donor polymers (PF2 and PM2) with complementary absorption. The major donor PF2 is a relatively wide bandgap polymer that contributes the most photon absorption in the UV-vis region while the second donor PM2 improves the light harvesting due to its strong absorption in the near-IR region. By carefully tuning the ratio of two donor polymers, the best ratio of 9 : 1 : 5 (PF2 : PM2 : N2200) is achieved and shows a PCE of 6.90%, which is better than two binary devices. This work demonstrates an effective strategy of utilizing a narrow bandgap donor polymer as the second donor to improve the performance of all-polymer solar cells.

Abstract:To achieve efficient non-fullerene organic solar cells, it is important to reduce the voltage loss from the optical bandgap to the open-circuit voltage of the cell: Here we report a highly efficient non-fullerene organic solar cell with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.08 V and a small voltage loss of 0.55 V. The high performance was enabled by a novel wide-bandgap (2.05 eV) donor polymer paired with a narrow-bandgap (1.63 eV) small molecular acceptor (SMA). Our morphology characterizations show that both the polymer and the SMA can maintain high crystallinity in the blend film, resulting in crystalline and small domains. As a result, our non-fullerene organic solar cells realize an efficiency of 11.6%, which is the best performance for a non-fullerene organic solar cell with such a small voltage loss.

Abstract:Two high bandgap donor-acceptor polymers based on benzodithiophene with different alkyl side chains and fluorinated benzotriazole are designed and synthesised. Due to the deep HOMO energy level and high hole mobility of the octylthio substituted polymer PBDTTS-FTAZ, it exhibits higher efficiency of 8.3% in bulk-heterojunction solar cells. This indicates the advantages of alkylthio over alkyl for the design of conjugated polymers. Abstract:To maximize the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs), polymer donors and nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) should be designed with complementarily optical and electronic properties as well as desirable morphological features. Currently, high-performance polymer donors are mainly constructed by alternating copolymerization of electron -rich (D) and electron -deficient (A) units. Here, we demonstrate that acceptor 1 - pi-acceptor 2 - pi (A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi)-type polymer donors constructed by copolymerization of two different A units can achieve comparable photovoltaic properties with those of D pi-A- pi-type counterparts. By using the ladder -type 4,10-bis(2-hexyldecyl)-thieno[2",3":5,6]pyrido[3,4-g]thieno-[3,2-c]isoquinoline-5,11-dione as A 1 unit, difluorobenzotriazole or benzodithiophene-4,8-dione as A 2 unit, and thiophene unit as the pi bridge, two A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type copolymers, P03 and P07, are successfully synthesized. Due to the weakened intramolecular charge -transfer effect, P03 and P07 exhibit wide bandgaps of 1.88 and 1.74 eV, respectively. In combination with the NFA of L8 -BO, the P03:L8-BO-based blend shows superior crystallinity and uniform phase -separated morphology thereby leading to a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.03 % in comparison with the P07:L8-BObased blend which shows a PCE of 9.84 %. Notably, the 15.03 % efficiency is by far the highest value for PSCs based on A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type polymer donors. These results provide useful guidance for the future design of high-performance donor copolymers for PSCs.

Abstract:Three regioregular benzodithiophene-based donor-donor (D-D)-type polymers (PBDTT, PBDTT1Cl, and PBDTT2Cl) are designed, synthesized, and used as donor materials in organic solar cells (OSCs). Because of the weak intramolecular charge-transfer effect, these polymers exhibit large optical bandgaps (>2.0 eV). Among these three polymers, PBDTT1Cl exhibits more ordered and closer molecular stacking, and its devices demonstrate higher and more balanced charge mobilities and a longer charge-separated state lifetime. As a result of these comprehensive benefits, PBDTT1Cl-based OSCs give a very impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.10% with a low nonradiative energy loss (0.19 eV). Moreover, PBDTT1Cl also possesses a low figure-of-merit value and good universality to match with different acceptors. This work provides a simply and efficient strategy to design low-cost high-performance polymer donor materials.

A Benzobis(thiazole)-Based Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Enables over 15% Efficiency Organic Photovoltaics with a Flat Energetic Offset

Abstract:Developing donor:acceptor (D:A) blends that work efficiently with small charge separation driving forces (or energetic offset) is highly desired for reducing the voltage loss and unveiling the working mechanism of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Herein, by incorporating the weak electron-withdrawing acceptor unit of benzobis(thiazole), we design and synthesize two wide-bandgap (similar to 2 eV) polymer donors, PBTz-TF and PBTz-TCl, with deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels approaching that of the typical electron acceptor Y6, forming negligible HOMO offsets of 0.04 and 0 eV for PBTz-TF:Y6 and PBTz-TCl:Y6 blends, respectively. Interestingly, efficient charge separation is observed in both blends, while the PBTz-TCl:Y6 blend possesses multiple superiorities, including higher mobilities, longer exciton lifetimes, purer domains, and more dominant face-on orientation. These lead to a better efficiency of 15.06% at 0 eV HOMO offset in the PBTz-TCl:Y6-based OPV, which is superior compared to the PBTz-TF:Y6-based OPVs (14.73%) with a HOMO offset of 0.04 eV. This work explores the properties of low driving force D:A blends and should have implications in the fundamental understanding of the carrier dynamics in OPVs with a flat energetic offset.
A Dithienobenzothiadiazole-Quaterthiophene Wide Bandgap Polymer Enables Non-Fullerene Based Polymer Solar Cells with over 15% Efficiency

Abstract:In this work, a wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donor PDTfBT-4T based on dithienobenzothiadiazole (DTfBT) and quaterthiophene (4T) was synthesized for the application in non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Polymer PDTfBT-4T showed film absorption peak at 554 nm and optical band gap of 1.93 eV. Complementary absorption and sufficiently energetic offsets could be achieved between the PDTfBT-4T and a benzotriazole-fused Y-series non-fullerene acceptor Y14. The PDTfBT-4T:Y14 active layer could deliver an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V, a short-circuit current density of 25.42 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 72.0%, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.19%. This is the highest efficiency among WBG polymer donors based on an electrondeficient unit and an oligothiophene, which is also significantly higher than those of the fluorinated or esterified polythiophenes. The results indicate that DTfBT is a powerful electron-deficient unit, which is promising in the construction of simple WBG polymer donors for efficient NFA based PSCs.

Abstract:Introducing electron-withdrawing groups onto donor-acceptor (D-A) type conjugated materials is a commonly used method for lowering their highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level to achieve higher open circuit voltage (V-oc) in polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, this method is rather costly due to the tedious synthesis and low yield involved in preparing the target monomers. Here, a novel design concept of using two different acceptor units to construct acceptor(1)-acceptor(2) (A(1)-A(2)) type polymers with a deep HOMO level is proposed. Two A(1)-A(2) type wide bandgap (WBG) polymers, PB24-3TDC and PB68-3TDC, were designed for PSCs. The developed polymers possess proper energy levels and complementary absorption with an efficient electron acceptor ITIC-Th. More importantly, by slightly regulating the alkyl side-chains, molecular stacking and photoluminescence (PL) emission energy loss of polymers can be alternated significantly. As a result, tuned V-oc from 0.9 to 1.0 V and short-circuit current (J(sc)) from 9.4 to 17.0 mA cm(-2) can be achieved. The device based on PB24-3TDC:ITIC-Th exhibits a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.3% compared to PB68-3TDC:ITIC-Th based device with a PCE of 7.88%. These results show that the design concept of A(1)-A(2) type polymer donors have great potential for blending with non-fullerene acceptors for achieving high performance PSCs.

Abstract:The limited selection of wide bandgap polymer donors for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) is a bottleneck problem restricting their further development and remains poorly studied. Herein, a new wide bandgap polymer, namely PBBTz‐Cl, was designed and synthesized by bridging the benzobisthiazole acceptor block and chlorinated benzodithiophene donor block with thiophene units for application as an electron donor in all‐PSCs. PBBTz‐Cl not only possessed a wide bandgap and deep energy levels, but also displayed strong absorption, high‐planar structure, and good crystallinity, making it to be a promising candidate for application as polymer donor in organic solar cells. When paired with the narrow bandgap polymer acceptor PY‐IT, a fibril‐like morphology formed, which facilitated the exciton dissociation and charge transport, contributing to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.15% of the corresponding all‐PSCs. Moreover, when introducing another crystalline polymer acceptor BTP‐2T2F into the PBBTz‐Cl:PY‐IT host blend, the absorption ditch in the range of 600–750 nm was filled, and the blend morphology was further optimized with the trap density reducing. As a result, the ternary blend all‐PSCs achieved a significantly improved PCE of 18.60%, which is among the highest vales for all‐PSCs to date. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Although wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors are widely used in non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs), only a few WBG polymers exhibited high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Developing WBG donors with ideal complementary absorption with narrow bandgap non-fullerene acceptors is critical to further improving the photovoltaic performance of OSCs. Here, we provide an effective strategy to widen the bandgap ( Eg ) of polymers by increasing the curvature of the polymer donor backbone structure and compare it with the fluorination strategy. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrated that the fluorination strategy reduced the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of PBDT-DT2FBT with little effect on the Eg . In contrast, the polymer PBDT-DTfBT, with a large backbone curvature, exhibited a reduced HOMO energy level and a significantly increased LUMO energy level, resulting in a significant increase in the optical Eg of 0.19 eV. The PBDT-DTfBT-based device achieved a high PCE of 15.89%, which far exceeded the PCEs of the PBDT-DTBT (9.84%) and PBDT-DT2FBT-based devices (8.02%). This work could guide the design of high-performance WBG donors.

Abstract:The working horses for the drastically improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) were the small-band-gap molecular non-fullerene acceptors. This development not only removed the low performance obstacle for OSCs but also raised needs for wide-band-gap polymers for donor/acceptor mix with complimentary absorptions. Benzodithiophene (BDT) is one of the mostly used unit for constructing donor polymers. Here, we introduced one type of donor polymer with two BDT units placed perpendicularly. This exploration is aimed to reduce the complexity of molecule design, potentially to reduce the cost of donor materials. We also explored the halogenation of BDT side group to optimize the performances of the copolymers. The chlorinated donor polymer PvBDT-Cl delivered a decent PCE of 8.23% with Y6-T. This work explored the possibility of using only BDT unit to construct high performance donor polymers, which is a crucial insight for future low-cost donor polymer design.

Abstract:Two new donoracceptor alternating wide band gap copolymers, PTTDBC-PhQC8 and PTTDBC-BTC12, based on an electron-rich tetrathienodibenzocarbazole (TTDBC) donor have been designed and synthesized, wherein two additional thienyl rings are fused into a 2,7-dithienylcarbazole skeleton to reinforce the structural coplanarity and rigidity of polymers. The quinoid thiophene in TTDBC can endow not only a wide optical band gap (similar to 1.9 eV) but also a deep HOMO (similar to 5.3 eV) for the resulting polymers. The conventional configuration solar cells based on PTTDBC-BTC12 exhibit a large V-oc of 0.91 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.30% (with a Jsc of 9.27 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.51), while a slightly higher PCE of 4.50% can be achieved for the inverted structure devices. We believe that these wide band gap polymers have potential to be used for tandem cell applications.

Abstract:Narrow‐bandgap polymer semiconductors are essential for advancing the development of organic solar cells. Here, a new narrow‐bandgap polymer acceptor L14, featuring an acceptor–acceptor (A–A) type backbone, is synthesized by copolymerizing a dibrominated fused‐ring electron acceptor (FREA) with distannylated bithiophene imide. Combining the advantages of both the FREA and the A–A polymer, L14 not only shows a narrow bandgap and high absorption coefficient, but also low‐lying frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels. Such FMO levels yield improved electron transfer character, but unexpectedly, without sacrificing open‐circuit voltage (Voc), which is attributed to a small nonradiative recombination loss (Eloss,nr) of 0.22 eV. Benefiting from the improved photocurrent along with the high fill factor and Voc, an excellent efficiency of 14.3% is achieved, which is among the highest values for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). The results demonstrate the superiority of narrow‐bandgap A–A type polymers for improving all‐PSC performance and pave a way toward developing high‐performance polymer acceptors for all‐PSCs.

Abstract:The molecular design of a wide-bandgap polymer donor is critical to achieve high-performance organic photovoltaic devices. Herein, a new dibenzo-fused quinoxalineimide (BPQI) is successfully synthesized as an electron-deficient building block to construct donor–acceptor (D–A)-type polymers, namely P(BPQI-BDT) and P(BPQI-BDTT), using benzodithiophene and its derivative, which bears different side chains, as the copolymerization units. These two polymers are used as a donor, and the narrow bandgap (2,20-((2Z,20Z)-((12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo [3,4-e]thieno[2,′′30′:4′,50]thieno[20,30:4,5]pyrrolo[3,2g]thieno[20,30:4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10 diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile) Y6 is used as an acceptor to fabricate bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell devices. Y6, as a non-fullerene receptor (NFA), has excellent electrochemical and optical properties, as well as a high efficiency of over 18%. The device, based on P(BPQI-BDTT):Y6, showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 6.31% with a JSC of 17.09 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.82 V, and an FF of 44.78%. This study demonstrates that dibenzo-fused quinoxalineimide is a promising building block for developing wide-bandgap polymer donors.

A Novel Wide Bandgap Conjugated Polymer (2.0 Ev) Based on Bithiazole for High Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:An efficient wide bandgap conjugated polymer (PTZ6) based on alkoxylphenyl substituted benzodithiophene as donor unit and bithiazole as acceptor unit was developed for polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer exhibited a wide bandgap of 2.0eV with strong absorption in the range of 300–620nm, and a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of −5.36eV. The PSCs based on PTZ6: PC71BM show a PCE of 8.1% with a Voc of 0.96V, a Jsc of 10.9mAcm−2 and a high FF of 76.7%, which is among the highest values for the fullerene PSCs based on conjugated polymer donors with bandgap near to 2.0eV. Moreover, for this blend system, the photovoltaic performance of the devices changes little when the active layer thickness increases from 90nm to 220nm. More importantly, the non-fullerene PSCs based on PTZ6: ITIC exhibit a PCE of 10.3% with a high Voc of 1.01V, which should be the best value for the non-fullerene PSCs with the Eloss less than 0.6eV to date. Our results indicate that PTZ6 is a promising wide bandgap polymer donor for the photovoltaic application in PSCs.
Wide-bandgap Donor Polymers Based on a Dicyanodivinyl Indacenodithiophene Unit for Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A wide-bandgap polymer donor with improved efficiency plays an important role in improving the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this study, two novel wide-bandgap polymer donors, PBDT and PBDT-S, were designed and synthesized based on a dicyanodivinyl indacenodithiophene (IDT-CN) moiety, in which benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ']dithiophene (BDT) building blocks and IDT-CN are used as electron-sufficient and -deficient units, respectively. In our study, the PBDT and PBDT-S polymer donors exhibited similar frontier-molecular-orbital energy levels and optical properties, and both copolymers showed good miscibility with the widely used narrow-bandgap small molecular acceptor Y6. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells (NF-PSCs) based on PBDT:Y6 exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency of 10.04% with an open circuit voltage of 0.88 V, a short-circuit current density of 22.16 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor of 51.31%, where the NF-PSCs based on PBDT-S:Y6 exhibited a moderate power conversion efficiency of 6.90%. The enhanced photovoltaic performance, realized by virtue of the improved short-circuit current density, can be attributed to the slightly enhanced electron mobility, higher exciton dissociation rates, more efficient charge collection and better nanoscale phase separation of the PBDT-based device. The results of this work indicate that the IDT-CN unit is a promising building block for constructing donor polymers for high-performance organic photovoltaic cells.
