Abstract:Cathodic arc physical vapor deposition (CA-PVD) was used as a coating technique on the AISI D3 (DIN 1.2080) tool steel to enhance TiN-TiCN-TiN/TiAlN and TiN-TiCN-TiN/TiAlN/TiN-TiCN-TiN multilayer coatings. Microstructural characterization and phase composition were performed by scanning electron microscopy equipped with Energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) of the multilayer coatings formed on the substrate. Surface properties including hardness and elastic modulus were studied by nanoindentation. The tribological behavior was then evaluated using the ball-on-disk at the load of 10 N for a sliding distance of 1000 m. Nanoindentation tests demonstrated the hardness and elastic modulus reached the high values of 28.9 ± 4.1 and 319 ± 26 GPa, respectively, in the coating with the TiN/TiCN/TiN inner and outer layer and the TiAlN interlayer (PVD2). According to the ball-on-disk test, PVD2 coating with the H/E ratio of 0.091 and the lowest friction coefficient (~ 0.45) had the best wear resistance. The main wear mechanisms were delamination, abrasive, and oxidation for both coatings.
