Abstract:Introducing nanomaterials with high electrical properties, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), into matrix material is an effective method to improve lightning strike suppression property of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. However, the relationship of CNTs' content on the electrical conductivities as well as lightning damage areas and residual mechanical properties of CFRP composite are not thoroughly known. In this paper, lightning strike damage characteristics of [0] 10 , [0/90] 2s , [45/0/−45/90] s matrix dispersed CNTs-CFRP composite laminates subjected to prolonged high-intensity (90–100 kA, 1.8 ms, 6.78 × 10 6 A 2 s) lightning strike was investigated. Results showed that damage suppression property of CFRP laminate was closely related to CNTs' loading and ply sequence. For [0/90] 2s and [45/0/−45/90] s laminates, significant reduction of surface and internal damages were observed as CNTs increased to 0.8 wt%, which showed 94.8 %/92.7 % and 90.7 %/91.6 % reduction of surface and internal damage areas, as well as 69.45 %/65.15 % and 63.93 %/66.52 % retention of residual flexural strength and modulus. However, this suppression property was not shown for [0] 10 laminate with even slight increase of damage. The mechanism responsible for such phenomenon was analyzed. The results from the present work provide valuable knowledge for the design of lightweight nanofiller reinforced CFRP composite with robust lightning strike protection functionality.
