Abstract:
To reduce the weight of state-of-the-art aeronautical lightning protection material, a non-metallic lightning strike protection film was prepared. The new film consisted of 2 functional layers, which were capable of dispersing lightning current and blocking heat propagation from lightning plasma, respectively. Graphene and conductive polymer veil were adopted as electrical conductivity modifier; expandable graphite was adopted as thermal insulator. By integrating these functions, the new film featured by light weight, good bonding strength and lightning protection effectiveness, the lightning damage depth reduced by 79 % and the residual compression strength was increased by 21 %. This paper proposed and verified that establishing synergistic system which respond to electrical and thermal induced lightning damage simultaneously could remarkably increase the lightning protection effectiveness of CFRP, the prospect of this new technique was also discussed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is that in the modern aviation industry, although carbon fiber - reinforced composite materials (CFRP) perform excellently in terms of structural applicability, they are relatively vulnerable to lightning strike damage. Specifically, due to the electrical isotropy of CFRP, it is prone to severe penetrating damage after lightning strikes. To solve this problem, the paper proposes a lightweight non - metallic lightning strike protection film (NM - LSP), aiming to reduce the damage of CFRP during lightning strikes while maintaining its lightweight advantage. ### Background of the paper 1. **Application and challenges of CFRP**: - In the modern aviation industry, about 52% of the primary and secondary structures are made of CFRP. - Although CFRP has excellent structural properties, it is very sensitive to lightning strike damage. - The frequency of lightning strikes is about once per 1,000 - 10,000 flight hours. - The electrical isotropy of CFRP leads to its susceptibility to severe damage after lightning strikes. 2. **Existing solutions and their limitations**: - **Metallic surface materials**: For example, expanded copper foil (ECF) can effectively disperse lightning current, but it increases the weight and offsets the lightweight advantage of CFRP. - **Conductive fillers**: Such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene can improve the in - plane and through - thickness conductivity of CFRP, but may affect the mechanical properties. - **Surface materials**: Such as carbon nanotube paper, nickel - coated carbon fiber and other lightweight surface materials can reduce lightning strike damage, but the production process is complex and not suitable for large - scale applications. ### Objectives of the paper The paper designs a lightweight non - metallic lightning strike protection film (NM - LSP) to solve the following problems: 1. **Reduce lightning strike damage**: By dispersing lightning current and blocking thermal radiation, reduce the lightning strike damage of CFRP. 2. **Maintain lightweight**: Ensure that the protection film does not significantly increase the weight of CFRP. 3. **Improve mechanical properties**: While providing lightning strike protection, maintain or improve the mechanical properties of CFRP. ### Main methods 1. **Design of NM - LSP film**: - **Outer layer (Layer 1)**: Composed of a conductive polymer network and an epoxy adhesive doped with highly conductive graphene, used to disperse lightning current. - **Inner layer (Layer 2)**: A thermal insulation material composed of expanded graphite, used to block the thermal radiation of the high - temperature plasma generated by lightning strikes. 2. **Material preparation**: - **Conductive polymer network**: A nylon 6 network is used and prepared by the electroless silver plating process. - **Graphene - doped epoxy adhesive**: Prepared by ultrasonic and high - shear mixing techniques. - **Expanded graphite - doped epoxy adhesive**: Prepared by high - shear mixing techniques. 3. **Performance testing**: - **Electrical performance**: Test the sheet resistance and resistivity. - **Mechanical performance**: Test the flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength, etc. - **Lightning strike protection performance**: Evaluate the protection effect through simulated lightning strike tests. ### Results and discussion 1. **Preparation of NM - LSP film**: - A uniform NM - LSP film was successfully prepared, with good electrical conductivity and thermal insulation properties. - The surface resistance of the NM - LSP film is as low as 0.07 Ω/□, and it is lightweight and flexible. 2. **Lightning strike protection effect**: - The results of simulated lightning strike tests show that the NM - LSP film can effectively disperse lightning current and reduce the depth of lightning strike damage. - Compared with the blank control group, the lightning strike damage depth of CFRP samples protected by the NM - LSP film is reduced by 79%, and the remaining compressive strength is increased by 21%. - Compared with the traditional ECF, the NM - LSP film reduces the weight by 37% while maintaining a similar protection effect. ### Conclusion The paper successfully designed and prepared a lightweight non - metallic lightning strike protection film (NM - LSP). This film can effectively disperse lightning current and block thermal radiation, significantly reduce the lightning strike damage of CFRP, and at the same time maintain lightweight and good mechanical properties. In the future, the materials and protection mechanisms of the NM - LSP film will be further optimized.
