Abstract:A first principles-based dynamic model for a continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) platforming process, the UOP commercial naphtha catalytic reforming process, is developed in this paper. The lumping details of the naphtha feed and reaction scheme of the reaction model are given. The process model is composed of the reforming reaction model with catalyst deactivation, the furnace model and the separator model, which is capable of capturing the major dynamics that occurs in this process system. Dynamic simulations are performed based on Gear numerical algorithm and method of lines (MOL), a numerical technique dealing with partial differential equations (PDEs). The results of simulation are also presented. Dynamic responses caused by disturbances in the process system can be correctly predicted through simulations.

Abstract:Abstract Expanded bed adsorption (EBA) emerged in the early 1990s in an attempt to integrate the clarification, capture and initial product concentration/purification process. Several mathematical models have been put forward to describe its operation. However, none of the models developed specifically for EBA allows simultaneous prediction of bed hydrodynamics, mass transfer/adsorption and (unwanted) interactions and fouling. This currently limits the development and early optimization of EBA‐based separation processes. In multiphase reactor engineering, the use of multiphase computational fluid dynamics has been shown to improve fundamental understanding of fluidized beds. To advance EBA technology, a combination of particle, equipment and process scale models should be used. By employing a cascade of multiscale simulations, the various challenges EBA currently faces can be addressed. This allows for optimal design and selection of equipment, materials and process conditions, and reduces risks and development times of downstream processes involving EBA. © 2018 The Authors. Abstract:The adsorption of levulinic acid in fixed beds of basic polymeric adsorbents at 22 degrees C was studied under various operating conditions. A general rate model which considers pore diffusion and parallel pore/surface diffusion was solved numerically by orthogonal collocation on finite elements to describe the experimental breakthrough data. The adsorption isotherms, and the pore and surface diffusion coefficients were determined independently in batch adsorption studies. The external film resistance and the axial dispersion coefficient were estimated by the Wilson-Geankoplis equation and the Chung-Wen equation, respectively. Simulation elucidated that the model which considers parallel diffusion successfully describes the breakthrough behavior and gave a much better prediction than the model which considers pore diffusion. The results obtained in this work are applicable to design and optimizes the separation process.

Abstract:Methane steam reforming is the main hydrogen production method in the industry. The product of methane steam reforming contains H2, CH4, CO and CO2 and is then purified by pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology. In this study, a layered two-bed PSA process was designed theoretically to purify H2 from methane steam reforming off gas. The effects of adsorption pressure, adsorption time and purge-to-feed ratio (P/F ratio) on process performance were investigated to design a PSA process with more than 99.95% purity and 80% recovery. Since the feed composition of the PSA process changes with the upstream process, the effect of the feed composition on the process performance was discussed as well. The result showed that the increase of CH4 concentration, which was the weakest adsorbate, would have a negative impact on product purity.

Abstract:Abstract Conformance improvement is the key to success in most enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes including CO2 flooding and steamflooding. In spite of technical and economic limitations, foam has been used as dispersions of microgas bubbles in the reservoir to enhance mobility. Steam-foam has numerous applications in the industry, including heavy oil reservoirs, which are a significant part of the future energy supply. Steam-foam applications have been used to prevent steam channeling and steam override, thus improving overall sweep efficiency, in both continuous steam and cyclic steam injection processes. The objective of this study is to investigate the key components of this complex process, where relatively high temperatures are recorded, in order to have a robust understanding of chemistry and the thermal stability of surfactants. The efficiency and therefore economics of the steam-foam process are strongly reliant on surfactant adsorption and retention. This requires a good understanding of the process for effective sizing of the foam injected. In this study, a commercial reservoir simulator is used where surfactant transport is modeled with surfactant availability and is determined by a combination of surfactant adsorption, surfactant thermal decomposition, and oil partitioning due to temperature. The degree of mobility decrease is interpolated as a result of factors that contain aqueous surfactant kind and concentration, the presence of an oil phase, and the capillary number. An empirical foam modeling method is employed with foam mobility decrease treated by means of modified gas relative permeability curves. The simulation results outline the sensitivity of these parameters and controlling agents, providing a better understanding of the influence of surfactant adsorption and thus, a number of chemicals to be used in an efficient manner. Optimum values for decision parameters that we have control on have been determined by coupling a commercial optimization software with the reservoir simulator. Uncertainty parameters such as surfactant adsorption have been analyzed in terms of significance on the recovery process. Even though steamflooding is thoroughly studied in the literature, there is no recent in-depth study that not only investigates the decision parameters but also uncertainty variables via a robust coupling of a reservoir simulator and an optimization/uncertainty software that model use of foam in steamflooding. This study aims to fill this gap by outlining the optimization workflow, the comparison of parameters with tornado charts and providing useful information for the industry.

Abstract:The rapid depletion of oil and the environmental impact of combustion has motivated the search for clean combustion technologies. Fluidised bed technology (FBT) works by suspending a fuel over a fast air inlet whilst sustaining the required temperatures. Using biomass or a mixture of coal/biomass as the fuel, FBC provides a low-carbon combustion technology whilst operating at low temperatures. Computational modelling has shown great advancement in its predictive capability and reliability over recent years. Two-fluid modelling (TFM) has become a viable tool for the modelling of the hydrodynamic and heat transfer processes in fluidised beds yet the inclusion of reaction kinetics is still in the early stages due to their complexity. Such reaction kinetics need to be implemented by means of a user defined function (UDF) into the commercial software ANSYS 12.0 as current built in models are not available. In this paper, two-fluid modelling is used to model a bubbling fluidised bed gasifier (BFBG) using four solid phases namely, biomass, coal and two types of char. Abstract:Pressure and Temperature Swing Adsorption (PTSA) is an appealing purification technology for removing low CO2 concentration from confined space potentially. In this work, a systematic method integrating dynamic process simulation, sensitivity analysis, process optimization, and energy consumption assessment was established to investigate a PTSA process of low CO2 concentration separation in the confined space using two adsorbents (Zeolite 13X and NaUSY). The dual site Langmuir adsorption isothermal models of N2 and CO2 were established, and calculated results showed good agreement with the experimental data. After parametric sensitivity analysis, key operational parameters (i.e. adsorption pressure, desorption pressure, regeneration temperature and P/F ratio) were optimized to achieve minimum process energy consumption. Those results indicated that Zeolite 13X was a good candidate for separating low concentration CO2 from confined space with lower energy consumption (55.03 kJ·Nm−3 N2). The simulation result can provide a novel strategy for removing low CO2 concentration from confined space.

Abstract:This work presented modeling and simulation of CO2 from natural gas. One of the most promising technologies is Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA), which is an energy-efficient and cost-effective process for separating and capturing CO2 from industrial processes and power plants. This paper provides an overview of the PSA process and its application for CO2 capture, along with a discussion of its advantages, limitations, and future research directions. This process is pressure swing adsorption (PSA) with four adsorption beds. The adsorption bed columns fill with activated carbon as adsorbent. In this simulation momentum, mass and energy balance are solved simultaneously. The process was designed with two beds in adsorption conditions and the other two beds in desorption conditions. The desorption cycle includes blow-down and purge steps. The linear driving force (LDF) estimates the adsorption rate in modeling this process. The extended Langmuir isotherm is used for the equilibrium between solid and gas phases. The temperature changes by heat transfer from the gas phase to solid and axial heat dispersion. The set of partial differential equations is solved using implicit finite difference.

Abstract:Understanding gas adsorptions in porous media is of critical importance to numerous academic research and industrial applications. Here, adsorptions of methane and carbon dioxide, which are primary compositions of natural gas and carbon capture and storage (CCS) processes, on different minerals are specifically investigated and their effects on reservoir productions and carbon storage processes are evaluated. First, an improved simplified local-density (SLD) model is developed to calculate the gas adsorptions by considering the complex porous composition and confinement effects induced phenomena. Then, the improved SLD model is embedded into a self-developed field simulation program to analyse the production processes of a selected large-scale gas reservoir. The proposed improved adsorption model is validated to be accurate for various multiscale minerals at different temperature and pressure conditions. By using the coupling with reservoir numerical simulation, the adsorption model is successfully up-scaled to practical field scale which is efficient and effective for predicting gas productions and analysing relevant influential factors, such as temperature, pressure and reservoir physical properties. The proposed theoretical approach provides strong technical support for future natural gas pro-ductions and CCS projects with its capability of calculating gas adsorptions on different minerals and practical gas field productions.

Abstract:A developing technology for gas separations is pressure swing adsorption, which has been proven to be more economical and energy efficient compared to other separation methods like cryogenic distillation and membrane separation. A pressure swing adsorption (PSA) column, with carbon dioxide-methane as feed mixture and 6-FDA based polyimides as the adsorbent, was modeled and simulated in this work. Ansys Fluent 12.1, along with supplementary user defined functions, was used to develop a 2D transient Eulerian laminar viscous flow model for the PSA column. The model was validated by comparing the simulated results with established analytical models for PSA. The developed numerical model was used to determine the carbon dioxide concentration in the column as a function of time based on different operating conditions. Effect of various operating parameters like pressure, temperature, and flow rate on the separation efficiency has been studied and reported. Optimization studies were carried out to obtain suitable operating conditions for the feed gases separation. Simulation studies were carried out to determine the separation length required for complete separation of the feed mixture corresponding to different inlet feed concentrations which were entering the column at a given flow rate.

Abstract:Adsorption processes with activated carbons can be used to remove heavy hydrocarbons from a natural gas flow. Using the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology, one can introduce a flexible solution in pre-existing gas-processing units to deal with new marked demands, as for example a C3+ free gas composition to be used as adsorbed natural gas to vehicles fuel tanks. However, designing a PSA process is a laborious task because several cycle configurations and materials are available to perform the separation. To fulfill such task, a multiscale procedure is proposed. Molecular simulation, through Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method, was used to obtain adsorption isotherms for natural gas components in three different carbons: WV-1050, NORIT R1 and MAXSORB. Bed geometry was set based on the minimum fluidization velocity and on the working capacity of the adsorbents. Working capacities were calculated using Langmuir Isotherm applied to Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) to represent the mixture. Each PSA column was simulated in Aspen Adsorption® and operates according to a four steps cycle (Skarstrom cycle): pressurization, adsorption at 40 bar, blowdown, and purge at 1 bar. The operating conditions of the process (such as flowrates, bed geometry and step times) were optimized, seeking the maximization of the process performance parameters: purity, recovery and productivity. A preliminary design of the PSA unit indicates the carbon WV1050 as the best adsorbent to produce C3+ free gas fuel, ideal for storage by adsorption.

Abstract:An elementary reaction kinetics model related with Elovich equation is developed to predict the CO2 adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetic behavior for potassium promoted hydrotalcite-like compound (K-promoted HTlcs). The elementary reaction kinetics model is comprehensively validated by experimental data from both atmosphere pressure thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and a high pressure adsorption apparatus. The elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption s(PSA) system modeling framework is then developed on the gPROMS commercial simulation platform by further considering comprehensive coupling effects from mass, momentum and energy transport processes, integrated with dynamic boundary condition and realistic operating procedures. The effects of adsorption time, residence time, purge to feed ratio, working pressure and adsorbents capacity on PSA cycling gas separation performance are studied with the proposed modeling framework based on a four-bed two-pressure-equalization PSA process.

Abstract:This work presents a detailed study of the systematic simulation, optimization, and control of a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process that used activated carbon as adsorbent to recover CH, from a gas mixture (70% N-2/30% CH4). The state-of-the-art reduced spate successive quadratic-programming (r-SQP) optimization algorithm is employed to-find the optimal values of the decision variables with additional constraints. The best Closed loop recovery obtained for the PSA system under consideration is around 98% with purity of 80%. The control strategy is based on the regulatory proportional integral derivative (Pm) controller because of its practicability and stability. Additional constraints that guaranteed the flexibility and adaptability of the PID controller were imposed on the optimization-based PSA system. The ability of the control system to reject various disturbances was evaluated and compared with the open loop conditions. Results demonstrated that the well-designed control system showed a wonderful performance in the presence of multiple disturbances.

Abstract:In a fuel-based refinery, rich gas in the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit is further processed to separate dry gas and refinery products (i.e., stabilized gasoline and liquified petroleum gas). The process is utility-intensive and costly and includes a two-stage compressor, pumps, an absorber, a stripper, a stabilizer, and a re-absorber. The optimization was conducted with respect to the compressor outlet pressure from the gas compression system (GCS) and the flow rate of absorbent and supplementary absorbent from the Absorption-stabilization System (ASS) using the process simulation software Aspen Plus. Compared to the base case of a 725 kt/a rich gas FCC unit, a refinery can save 2.42% of utility costs under optimal operation. Through optimized operation, medium-pressure steam consumption has been reduced by 2.4% compared to the base case, resulting in a significant improvement in total operational cost. The optimization strategy can provide insightful guidance for the practical operation of GCS and ASS.

Abstract:The elevated temperature pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a promising technology for pre-combustion CO2 capture in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant by taking the advantages of high partial pressure (1.0-2.0MPa) of CO2 in the syngas after water-gas shift reaction. An elementary reaction kinetic model was developed to predict the CO2 adsorption capacity and adsorption kinetic behavior for potassium promoted hydrotalcite-like compound (K-promoted HTlcs). Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and a high pressure adsorption apparatus were respectively used below atmospheric pressure and above atmospheric pressure. The results indicate that the modeling results agreed well the experimental results. The elevated temperature PSA system modeling framework is developed by considering comprehensive coupling effects from mass, heat, and momentum transport mechanisms. The modeling framework is implemented in the gPROMS commercial simulation platform by integrating adsorption bed with dynamic boundary condition and realistic operating procedures. The presented modeling framework can be further applied for the system optimization and controller design for multi-column elevated temperature PSA processes.

Abstract:In this work, a detailed three dimensional model is employed for the quantitative description of flow and coupled heat and mass transfer in a gas channel coated with porous adsorbent layer. The flow field of the gas stream is obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equation. The highly coupled mass and heat transfer in both the gas channel and the adsorbent layer are locally described, and the accompanying adsorption/desorption dynamics in the adsorbent layer are modelled as well. A parametric study has been carried out, in which the influences of thermal conductivity of the adsorbent layer, specific heat, porosity, tortuosity, layer thickness and geometrical shape on the performance of moisture adsorption processes are investigated in an exhaustive way. The heat and mass transfer mechanisms in the investigated cases are thoroughly analysed taking advantage of the rigorous 3D model, which deepens our understanding on the intricately coupled transport processes. The results reported in this work are useful for rational design and optimization of adsorption processes in adsorbent coated gas channels.

Abstract:Design and optimization of CO 2 capture processes have become a tremendously active area of research particularly in the past decade. In this context, development of intelligent techniques on the basis of first-principles models coupled with data-driven algorithms for such purpose looks very promising. In a series of works, we intend to present mechanism approaches in order to develop applicable structures for design and optimization of the CO 2 capture processes of interest via hybrid models. A systematic method is presented for optimizing a process for capturing CO 2 from a confined space through a Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) operation using a Hybrid Surrogate Model (HSM) and Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-III). The surrogate model is structured based on the VPSA process model offered in the Aspen Adsorption® environment and an artificial intelligence (AI) data-driven algorithm. The developed HSM is then used to predict the key process outputs including CO 2 purity, air recovery ratio and energy consumption rate. Accordingly, the optimized parameters are re-substituted into the VPSA process simulator for further data processing. It is demonstrated that the proposed model architecture provides considerable computational efficiency for the process optimization with only 48 h to complete the corresponding evolutionary search, while the optimization time by the conventional NSGA-direct method is close to 1129 h. The optimization results also show that the CO 2 purity changes from 1000 ppm to 399 ppm, the air recovery ratio remains at 93 %, and the energy consumption per unit product (ECP) decreases by 38.5 % to 99.7 kJ·Nm −3 air after an optimized air purification operation. The idea of chemical mechanism and industrial data twin modeling in this study holds substantial importance for the development of digital chemical twin systems and the process optimization of intelligent factory.

Abstract:Adsorption processes are expected to play an important role in carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). In particular, blast furnace gas (BFG) from the steel industry is one of the major sources of CO 2 emissions, and reducing emissions from this source is a major challenge. BFG can be treated as valuable hydrogen (H 2 ) source through water gas shift reactions, which may allow synthesis of methane and methanol if the purification of these two gases is possible. This study proposes and designs a new Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption (VPSA) process that consists of two tandem adsorption columns for simultaneous separation of H 2 and CO 2 from BFG. A mathematical model is developed to predict the performance of the proposed process. The model is fitted to the experimental data using a VPSA pilot plant, which were demonstrated to predict flow rates within an error of 6%. Furthermore, the model was used to perform multi-objective optimization to analyze trade-offs among throughput, energy consumption, CO 2 purity, and recovery. Finally, we analyzed the optimal design and operating conditions such as pressure and column height.

Abstract:Pressure swing adsorption(PSA) based gas separation technology is widely applied in chemical industries, especially in hydrogen purification. Its complex mechanism and non-steady state feature restrict the separation performance adjustment and application on efficient gas utilization. Process simulation, machine learning and modelling combined innovating gas management methodology is proposed in this paper to perform accurate gas separation for natural gas based syngas mixture. VB script program is employed to drive Aspen adsorption simulation, and then classical and regression tree(CART), polynomial regression(PNR) and surrogate model are comprehensively used to perform machine learning. Consequently, the coefficient matrix is obtained to quantify the separation performance. This method holds the potential for broader application in refineries and SPCs hybrid hydrogen network, facilitating the comprehensive utilization of hydrogen containing gases. Case study results show this methodology can conserve natural gas and gas productivity by 21.3 %, as well as carbon emission by 8211.6 Nm3/h. This work highlights the promising application of digital twin technology within the chemical industry, showcasing how process simulation, machine learning, and modeling can collectively revolutionize gas management and resource conservation.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:Oil vapor emitted during refueling process has caused serious issues of air pollution, especially the environmental impact in surrounding residential areas. Most petrol stations have installed oil vapor recovery systems, but some stations did not properly maintain or switch on them. With the increasing emphasis on ecological environmental protection, it is more crucial to investigate the internal mechanism of vapor-air mass transfer. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model was developed and verified to analyze the effects of wind speed, vehicles number, and residential layout on oil vapor diffusion in residential areas. Simultaneously, the effectiveness of oil vapor recovery was assessed by comparing contamination before and after recovery. Results indicate that wind speed greatly affects the area and location of excess emission areas (EEAs). As the wind speed increases from 2 m/s to 4 m/s, highest concentration, distance to buildings and width of EEAs decreases by 49.1%, 43.8%, and 33.3%, respectively, and EEAs disappear at the wind speed of 6 m/s. Vehicles number has a more significant effect on the symmetry of EEAs, and EEAs become gradually symmetrical as the number increases from 3 to 12. Further, the enclosure layout proves to be an effective layout for protecting residential air, with a minimum concentration of 0.18 mg/m 3 . Notably, the effectiveness of oil vapor recovery is remarkable, with a purification rate of 98.5%. These findings can offer a valuable guidance for controlling air pollution in residential areas and enhancing the environmental protection level of petroleum enterprises.
