Abstract:First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of Lu-H-N compounds reveal low-energy configurations of Fm$\overline{3}$m Lu$_{8}$H$_{23-x}$N structures that exhibit novel electronic properties such as flat bands, sharply peaked densities of states (van Hove singularities, vHs), and intersecting Dirac cones near the Fermi energy (E$_F$). These N-doped LuH$_3$-based structures also exhibit an interconnected metallic hydrogen network, which is a common feature of high-T$_c$ hydride superconductors. Electronic property systematics give estimates of T$_c$ for optimally ordered structures that are well above the critical temperatures predicted for structures considered previously. The vHs and flat bands near E$_F$ are enhanced in DFT+U calculations, implying strong correlation physics should also be considered for first-principles studies of these materials. These results provide a basis for understanding the novel electronic properties observed for nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride.

Abstract:The structure of the material responsible for the room temperature and near ambient pressure superconductivity reported in an N-doped lutetium hydride [Nature, 615, 244 (2023)] has not been conclusively determined. Herein, density functional theory calculations are performed in an attempt to uncover what it might be. Guided by a range of strategies including crystal structure prediction and modifications of existing structure types, we present an array of Lu-N-H phases that are dynamically stable at experimentally relevant pressures. Although none of the structures found are thermodynamically stable, and none are expected to remain superconducting above 17 K at 10 kbar, a number of metallic compounds with fcc Lu lattices -- as suggested by the experimental X-ray diffraction measurements of the majority phase -- are identified. The system whose calculated equation of states matches best with that measured for the majority phase is fluorite-type LuH2, whose 10 kbar superconducting critical temperature was estimated to be 0.09 K using the Allen-Dynes modified McMillan equation.

Abstract:First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations of supercell structures based on N-doped Fm3 ̄mLuH3 reveal configurations of Fm3 ̄mLu8H23−xN that exhibit novel electronic properties such as flat bands, sharply peaked densities of states (van Hove singularities, vHs), and intersecting Dirac cones near the Fermi energy ( EF ). These electronic properties are present when N substitutes H in the octahedral interstices of Fm3 ̄mLuH3 . These structures also exhibit an interconnected metallic hydrogen network, a common feature of high- Tc hydride superconductors. Electronic property systematics gives an estimate of Tc for one structure that is well above the critical temperatures predicted for structures considered previously. DFT+U has an especially strong effect on one of the structures considered, enhancing the vHs and flat bands near EF . Abstract:The report on the near-ambient superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has stimulated great interest in this material (Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. 2023). While its superconductivity is still a subject of debate, the structure of the claimed cubic phase remains uncertain. In this work, we study the effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the energetic and dynamic stability of cubic LuH3. Our findings indicate that both pressure and nitrogen doping can enhance the stability of the cubic LuH3 phase. We propose a Lu8H21N structure that exhibits stable phonon, reasonable thermodynamic stability at 1 GPa, and a similar XRD pattern to the experimental data. However, we do not observe electron-phonon coupling in the zone-center phonon modes of these crystal structures.

Abstract:The structural, magnetic, electronic and optical properties as well as phase stabilities under pressure for GdH2 and GdH3 are investigated using density function theory. The non-magnetic (NM), ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases are considered for the total energy calculations. The magnetic phase is much more stable than the nonmagnetic phase both at ambient pressure and high pressure for the cubic GdH2 or hexagonal GdH3, but the antiferromagnetic phase is only slightly more stable than the ferromagnetic phase at ambient pressure in the two cases. With increasing pressure, the antiferromagnetic fcc GdH2 may transform to the ferromagnetic phase, while the antiferromagnetic hcp GdH3 keeps stable in the interesting pressure range. The pure theoretical calculations further indicate that there is a structural transition from hcp to fcc for GdH3 at about 9.8GPa. In addition, the calculations of band structures and densities of states clearly show that the antiferromagnetic fcc GdH2 attributes to metal, whereas the antiferromagnetic hcp GdH3 attributes to semiconductor, but both have similar ionic–covalent bonding character. The semiconducting GdH3 may have a 1.55eV fundamental band gap. Under the fundamental band gap, the complex dielectric function and refractive index are predicted for the hcp GdH3 in the whole energy range.
Superconducting and topological properties of compound Lu$_4$H$_7$N

Abstract:A recent experiment has reported a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride acheving a remarkable Tc of 294 K at just 1 GPa, significantly reducing the required pressure for obtaining room temperature superconductivity. However, subsequent experimental and theoretical investigations have encountered difficulties in replicating these results, leaving the structure of this Lu-H-N compound shrouded in uncertainty. Here, we propose a stable structure for Lu$_4$H$_7$N employing first-principles calculations. Our calculations reveal that Lu$_4$H$_7$N has a Tc of 1.044 K, which can be substantially enhanced to 11.721 K at 150 GPa, due to the increasing electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Notably, we delve into the nontrivial Z2 band topology of Lu$_4$H$_7$N, featuring discernible surface states near the Fermi level, and we explore its spin Hall conductivity characteristics. Furthermore, we find that the electron doping can enhance the EPC strength and Tc of Lu$_4$H$_7$N, such as the Lu$_4$H$_7$O structure we predict simulating electron doping for Lu$_4$H$_7$N with an impressive Tc of 3.837 K. This work demonstrates the coexistence of superconducting and topological properties in a Lu-H-N system compound, which holds the promise of guiding the search for novel topological superconducting materials.

Abstract:Recently it was claimed that nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride exhibited a near-ambient superconducting transition with a temperature of 294 K at a pressure of only 10 kbar, this pressure being several orders of magnitude lower than previously demonstrated for hydrides under pressure. In this paper, we investigate within DFT+U the electronic structure of both parent lutetium hydride LuH$_3$ and nitrogen doped lutetium hydride LuH$_{2.75}$N$_{0.25}$. We calculated corresponding bands, density of states and Fermi surfaces. It is shown that in the stoichiometric system the Lu-5d states cross the Fermi level while the H-1s states make almost no contribution at the Fermi level. However, with nitrogen doping, the N-2p states enter the Fermi level in large quantities and bring together a significant contribution from the H-1s states. The presence of N-2p and H-1s states at the Fermi level in a doped compound can facilitate the emergence of superconductivity. For instance, nitrogen doping almost doubles the value of DOS at the Fermi level. Simple BCS analysis shows that the nitrogen doping of LuH$_3$ can provide T$_c$ more than 100K and even increase it with further hole doping.

Ternary Phase Diagram of Nitrogen Doped Lutetium Hydrides

Abstract:This paper presents the results of an extensive structural search of ternary solids containing lutetium, nitrogen and hydrogen. Based on thousands of thermodynamically stable structures, available online, the convex hull of the formation enthalpies is constructed. To obtain the correct energetic ordering, the highly accurate RSCAN DFT functional is used in high quality all-electron calculations. In this way possible pseudopotential errors are eliminated. A novel lutetium hydride structure (HLu$_2$) that is on the convex hull is found in our search. An electron phonon analysis however shows that it is not a candidate structure for near ambient superconductivity. Besides this structure, which appears to have been missed in previous searches, possibly due to different DFT methodologies, our results agree closely with the results of previously published structure search efforts. This shows, that the field of crystal structure prediction has matured to a state where independent methodologies produce consistent and reproducible results, underlining the trustworthiness of modern crystal structure predictions. Hence it is quite unlikely that a structure, that would give rise within standard BCS theory to the superconducting properties, claimed to have been observed by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0" href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0</a> , exists. Abstract:The recent report of near-ambient conditions superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has inspired a large number of experimental studies with contradictory results. We model from first principles the physical properties of the possible parent structures of the reported superconductor, LuH$_2$ and LuH$_3$. We show that only the phonon band structure of LuH$_3$ can explain the reported Raman spectra due to the presence of hydrogens at the interstitial octahedral sites. However, this structure is stabilized by anharmonicity only above 6 GPa. We find that the intriguing color change with pressure in the reported superconductor is consistent with the optical properties of LuH$_2$, which are determined by the presence of an undamped interband plasmon. The plasmon blue-shifts with pressure and modifies the color of the sample without requiring any structural phase transition. Our findings suggest that the main component in the experiments is LuH$_2$ with some extra hydrogen atoms at octahedral sites. None of LuH$_2$ and LuH$_3$ superconduct at high temperatures.

Investigations of pressurized Lu-N-H materials by using the hybrid functional

Abstract:Recently, Lu-N-H materials were reported to have room-temperature superconductivity, and the Hubbard U correction on the Lu's $\textit{f}$-electrons is necessary, and a constant U = 5.5 eV was applied to different Lu-N-H configurations (Nature 615, 244 (2023)). Following simulations indicate that the superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) of LuH$_{3}$ with U = 0 eV is 50 ~ 60 K, while the N-doped LuH$_{3}$ is below 30 K. Quite recently, calculations with U = 5 eV shows that the T$_{c}$ of N-doped LuH$_{3}$ exceeds 100 K. The properties of Lu-N-H are sensitive to the applied U values. Here, the structural and electronic Lu-N-H properties at high-pressure (0 ~ 10 GPa) are systematically investigated based on the hybrid functional. We show that different Lu-N-H configurations should possess different U values varying from 6.4 eV to 7.4 eV. Furthermore, at pressure ranging from 0 GPa to 1 GPa, the $\textit{f}$ and $\textit{d}$ band centers of N-doped LuH$_{3}$ show oscillation or even plateau, and the band gap of insulators also shows a platform near this pressure, this is consistent with the pressure range where room-temperature superconductivity appeared in Lu-N-H. Our work provides insights into the understanding of Lu-N-H materials and other hydrogen-rich superconductors based on the rare-earth elements.

Assessing the feasibility of near-ambient conditions superconductivity in the Lu-N-H system

Abstract:The recent report of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydrides (Lu-N-H) has generated a great interest. However, conflicting results have raised doubts regarding superconductivity. Here, we combine high-throughput crystal structure predictions with a fast predictor of the superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) to shed light on the properties of Lu-N-H at 1 GPa. None of the predicted structures shows the potential to support high-temperature superconductivity and the inclusion of nitrogen favors the appearance of insulating phases. Despite the lack of near-ambient superconductivity, we consider alternative metastable templates and study their $T_c$ and dynamical stability including quantum anharmonic effects. The cubic Lu$_4$H$_{11}$N exhibits a high $T_c$ of 100 K at 20 GPa, a large increase compared to 30 K obtained in its parent LuH$_3$. Interestingly, it has a similar X-ray pattern to the experimentally observed one. The LaH$_{10}$-like LuH$_{10}$ and CaH$_6$-like LuH$_6$ become high-temperature superconductors at 175 GPa and 100 GPa, with $T_c$ of 286 K and 246 K, respectively. Our findings suggest that high-temperature superconductivity is not possible in stable phases at near-ambient pressure, but metastable high-$T_c$ templates exist at moderate and high pressures.

Abstract:Recently, room-temperature superconductor has been claimed in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at near-ambient pressure [Nature 615, 244 (2023)]. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra analysis, the authors believed that the superconducting properties can most probably be attributed to Fm-3m-LuH3{\delta}N{\epsilon}. Here, we systematic study the phase diagram of Lu-N-H at 1 GPa by using first-principle theory and find that there have no thermodynamically stable ternary compounds. Besides, we analyzed the dynamically stability and superconducting properties of N-doped Fm-3m-LuH3 using virtual crystal approximation (VCA) and supercell method. Our theoretical results show that the Tc of N-doped LuH3 cannot reach the level of room-temperature.

Abstract:Advances in superconductor technology have been pursued for decades, moving towards room temperature models, such as a postulated nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride network. While experimental observations have been contradictory, insight into the building blocks of potential new superconductor materials can be gained theoretically, unravelling the fascinating electronic structure of these compounds at a molecular level. Here, the fundamental building blocks of lutetium materials (LuH, LuN, and LuNH) have been examined. The structures, spectroscopic constants for the ground and excited states, and the potential energy curves have been obtained for these species using complete active self-consistent field (CASSCF) and multireference configuration interaction with Davidson's correction (MRCI+Q) methods. For LuNH, the energetic properties of its isomers are determined. The bond dissociation energies of the three building blocks are calculated with the state-of-the-art f -block ab initio correlation consistent composite approach ( f -ccCA) and the high accuracy extrapolated ab initio thermochemistry (HEAT) scheme. As well, an analysis of different formation pathways of LuNH has been provided.

Abstract:In the nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (Lu-H-N) system, the presence of Lu-N chemical bonds plays a key role in the emergence of possible room-temperature superconductivity at near ambient pressure. However, due to the synthesis of single-crystalline LuN being a big challenge, the understanding of LuN is insufficient thus far. Here, we report on the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline LuN films. The crystal structures of LuN films were characterized by high-resolution X-ray diffraction. The measurement of low-temperature electrical transport indicates the LuN film is semiconducting from 300 to 2 K, yielding an activation gap of $\sim$ 0.02 eV. Interestingly, negative magnetoresistances can be observed below 12 K, which can result from the defects and magnetic impurities in LuN films. Our results uncover the electronic and magnetic properties of single-crystalline LuN films.

Abstract:Abstract The recent report of near-ambient superconductivity and associated color changes in pressurized nitrogen doped lutetium hydride has triggered worldwide interest and raised major questions about the nature and underlying physics of these latest claims. Here we report synthesis and characterization of high-purity nitrogen doped lutetium hydride LuH 2± x N y . We find that pressure conditions have notable effects on Lu-N and Lu-NH chemical bonding and the color changes likely stem from pressure-induced electron redistribution of nitrogen/vacancies and interaction with the LuH 2 framework. No superconducting transition is found in all the phases at temperatures 1.8-300 K and pressures 0-38 GPa. Instead, we identify a notable temperature-induced resistance anomaly of electronic origin in LuH 2± x N y , which is most pronounced in the pink phase and may have been erroneously interpreted as a sign of superconducting transition. This work establishes key benchmarks for nitrogen doped lutetium hydrides, allowing an in-depth understanding of its novel pressure-induced phase changes.

Leading components and pressure-induced color changes in N-doped lutetium hydride

Abstract:Recent experimental study by Dias {\it et al.} claims to have discovered room-temperature superconductivity in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system at 1 GPa [Nature 615, 244 (2023)], which sheds light on the long-held dream of ambient superconductivity. However, all follow-up experiments found no evidence of superconductivity. The compositions and the crystal structures of the lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system remain unknown. By employing the density functional theory based structure prediction algorithm, we suggest that in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen the major component is LuH$_2$ (Fm$\bar{3}$m), together with minor LuN (Fm$\bar{3}$m). The blue LuH$_2$ at ambient pressure will turn into purple and red color at higher pressures, possibly accompanied by the formation of vacancies at hydrogen-sites. In LuH$_2$ and LuN, the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the Lu-5d orbitals, while those from hydrogen and nitrogen are very small, leading to the absence of superconductivity in these two compounds. Nitrogen-doping to LuH$_2$ fails to enhance the superconductivity as well. In this work, we identify the leading components in N-doped lutetium hydride, explain its intriguing color changes under pressure, and elucidate why superconductivity is absent in the follow-up experiments.

Absence of near-ambient superconductivity in LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$

Abstract:Recently near-ambient superconductivity was claimed in N-doped lutetium hydride (ref. 1). This induces a worldwide fanaticism about the dream of room temperature superconductivity under low pressures. By using a high pressure and high temperature synthesis technique, we have successfully obtained the nitrogen doped lutetium hydride (LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$) with a dark-bluish color and a structure with the space group of $Fm\bar{3}m$ evidenced by x-ray diffraction. This structure is the same as that reported in ref. 1. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the existence of nitrogen in some areas of the samples. At ambient pressure, we witness a kink of resistivity and magnetization at about 300 K, which may correspond to a rearrangement of hydrogen/nitrogen atoms, namely a structural transition. However, by applying a pressure from 1 GPa to 6 GPa, we have seen a progressively optimized metallic behavior without showing superconductivity down to 10 K. Temperature dependence of magnetization shows a roughly flat feature between 100 and 320 K, and the magnetization increases with magnetic field at 100 K, all these are not expected for superconductivity at 100 K. Thus, we conclude the absence of near-ambient superconductivity in this nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride under pressures below 6 GPa.

Pressure-induced formation of cubic lutetium hydrides derived from trigonal LuH$_3$

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a fervent search for room-temperature superconductivity within the binary hydrides. However, as the number of untested compounds dwindled, it became natural to begin searching within the ternary hydrides. This led to the controversial discovery of room-temperature superconductivity at only 1GPa in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride [Dasenbrock-Gammon et al., Nature 615, 244 (2023)] and consequently provided much impetus for the synthesis of nitrogen-based ternary hydrides. Here, we report the synthesis of stable trigonal LuH$_3$ by hydrogenating pure lutetium which was subsequently pressurised to $\sim$2GPa in a dilute-N$_2$/He-rich pressure medium. Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction were used to characterise the structures throughout. After depressurising, energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive X-ray spectroscopies characterised the final compound. Though our compound under pressure exhibits similar structural behaviour to the Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. sample, we do not observe any nitrogen within the structure of the recovered sample at ambient pressure. We observe two cubic structures under pressure that simultaneously explain the X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra observed: the first corresponds well to $Fm\overline{3}m$ LuH$_{2+x}$, whilst the latter is an $Ia\overline{3}$-type structure.
