Abstract:Recent experimental study by Dias {\it et al.} claims to have discovered room-temperature superconductivity in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system at 1 GPa [Nature 615, 244 (2023)], which sheds light on the long-held dream of ambient superconductivity. However, all follow-up experiments found no evidence of superconductivity. The compositions and the crystal structures of the lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system remain unknown. By employing the density functional theory based structure prediction algorithm, we suggest that in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen the major component is LuH$_2$ (Fm$\bar{3}$m), together with minor LuN (Fm$\bar{3}$m). The blue LuH$_2$ at ambient pressure will turn into purple and red color at higher pressures, possibly accompanied by the formation of vacancies at hydrogen-sites. In LuH$_2$ and LuN, the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the Lu-5d orbitals, while those from hydrogen and nitrogen are very small, leading to the absence of superconductivity in these two compounds. Nitrogen-doping to LuH$_2$ fails to enhance the superconductivity as well. In this work, we identify the leading components in N-doped lutetium hydride, explain its intriguing color changes under pressure, and elucidate why superconductivity is absent in the follow-up experiments.

Abstract:Abstract The recent report of near-ambient superconductivity and associated color changes in pressurized nitrogen doped lutetium hydride has triggered worldwide interest and raised major questions about the nature and underlying physics of these latest claims. Here we report synthesis and characterization of high-purity nitrogen doped lutetium hydride LuH 2± x N y . We find that pressure conditions have notable effects on Lu-N and Lu-NH chemical bonding and the color changes likely stem from pressure-induced electron redistribution of nitrogen/vacancies and interaction with the LuH 2 framework. No superconducting transition is found in all the phases at temperatures 1.8-300 K and pressures 0-38 GPa. Instead, we identify a notable temperature-induced resistance anomaly of electronic origin in LuH 2± x N y , which is most pronounced in the pink phase and may have been erroneously interpreted as a sign of superconducting transition. This work establishes key benchmarks for nitrogen doped lutetium hydrides, allowing an in-depth understanding of its novel pressure-induced phase changes.

Abstract:Achieving room‐temperature superconductivity at accessible pressure remains a challenge. Research into nitrogen‐doped lutetium hydride (LuH2±xNy) has revealed that the possible superconductivity transition occurs at pressures above 95 GPa, shedding light on the ongoing controversy surrounding this material. The pursuit of room‐temperature superconductivity at an accessible synthetic pressure has been a long‐held dream for both theoretical and experimental physicists. Recently, a controversial report by Dasenbrock‐Gammon et al. claims that the nitrogen‐doped lutetium trihydride exhibits room‐temperature superconductivity at near‐ambient pressure. However, many researchers have failed to independently reproduce these results, which has sparked intense skepticism on this report. In this work, a LuH2±xNy sample is fabricated using high‐pressure and high‐temperature methods. The composition and structural characterization are the same as the aforementioned near‐ambient superconductor. In situ X‐ray diffraction investigations indicate that a high‐pressure phase transition toward Fm3 ̄ m‐LuH3±xNy occurred in the sample at 59 GPa. The temperature‐dependent resistance measurements reveal that two possible superconductivity transition are observed at 95 GPa, with Tc1 ≈6.5 K for high‐Tc phase and Tc2 ≈2.1 K for low‐Tc phase, arising from the disparate phases in the sample. Resistivity measurements in the Fm3 ̄ m‐LuH3±xNy phase under varying magnetic fields exhibited characteristics consistent with superconductivity, with an upper critical field μ0Hc2(0) of 3.3 T measured at 163 GPa. This work is expected to shed some light on the controversy surrounding superconductivity in the nitrogen‐doped lutetium hydride system.

Abstract:recent study demonstrated near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride 1 . This stimulated a worldwide interest in exploring room-temperature superconductivity at low pressures. Here, by using a high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis technique, we have obtained nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (LuH 2± x N y ), which has a dark-blue colour and a structure with the space group Fm3̅m as evidenced by X-ray diffraction. This structure is the same as that reported in ref. 1 , with a slight difference in lattice constant. Raman spectroscopy of our samples also showed patterns similar to those observed in ref. 1 . Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed the presence of nitrogen in the samples. We observed a metallic behaviour from 350 K to 2 K at ambient pressure. On applying pressures from 2.1 GPa to 41 GPa, we observed a gradual colour change from dark blue to violet to pink-red. By measuring the resistance at pressures ranging from 0.4 GPa to 40.1 GPa, we observed a progressively improved metallic behaviour; however, superconductivity was not observed above 2 K. Temperature dependence of magnetization at high pressure shows a very weak positive signal between 100 K and 320 K, and the magnetization increases with an increase in magnetic field at 100 K. All of these are not expected for superconductivity above 100 K. Thus, we conclude the absence of near-ambient superconductivity in this nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at pressures below 40.1 GPa.

Abstract:Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy.

Abstract:Recently near-ambient superconductivity was claimed in N-doped lutetium hydride (ref. 1). This induces a worldwide fanaticism about the dream of room temperature superconductivity under low pressures. By using a high pressure and high temperature synthesis technique, we have successfully obtained the nitrogen doped lutetium hydride (LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$) with a dark-bluish color and a structure with the space group of $Fm\bar{3}m$ evidenced by x-ray diffraction. This structure is the same as that reported in ref. 1. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the existence of nitrogen in some areas of the samples. At ambient pressure, we witness a kink of resistivity and magnetization at about 300 K, which may correspond to a rearrangement of hydrogen/nitrogen atoms, namely a structural transition. However, by applying a pressure from 1 GPa to 6 GPa, we have seen a progressively optimized metallic behavior without showing superconductivity down to 10 K. Temperature dependence of magnetization shows a roughly flat feature between 100 and 320 K, and the magnetization increases with magnetic field at 100 K, all these are not expected for superconductivity at 100 K. Thus, we conclude the absence of near-ambient superconductivity in this nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride under pressures below 6 GPa.

Abstract:Recently, the claim of "near-ambient superconductivity" in a N-doped lutetium hydride attracted enormous following-up investigations in the community of condensed matter physics and material sciences. But quite soon, the experimental results from different groups indicate consistently that no evidence of near-ambient superconductivity is found in the samples synthesized by the same method as the reported one, or by the other alternative methods. From our extended high-pressure heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements on the samples prepared with the lutetium foil and H2/N2 gas mixture, we report the finding of a magnetic transition at the temperature about 56 K. Our results show that this magnetic phase is robust against pressure up to 4.3 GPa, which covers the critical pressure of boosting the claimed near room temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:The report on the near-ambient superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has stimulated great interest in this material (Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. 2023). While its superconductivity is still a subject of debate, the structure of the claimed cubic phase remains uncertain. In this work, we study the effect of nitrogen doping and pressure on the energetic and dynamic stability of cubic LuH3. Our findings indicate that both pressure and nitrogen doping can enhance the stability of the cubic LuH3 phase. We propose a Lu8H21N structure that exhibits stable phonon, reasonable thermodynamic stability at 1 GPa, and a similar XRD pattern to the experimental data. However, we do not observe electron-phonon coupling in the zone-center phonon modes of these crystal structures.

Pressure induced color change and evolution of metallic behavior in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride

Abstract:By applying pressures up to 42 GPa on the nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$), we have found a gradual change of color from dark-blue to pink-violet in the pressure region of about 12 GPa to 21 GPa. The temperature dependence of resistivity under pressures up to 50.5 GPa shows progressively optimized metallic behavior with pressure. Interestingly, in the pressure region for the color change, a clear decrease of resistivity is observed with the increase of pressure, which is accompanied by a clear increase of the residual resistivity ratio (RRR). Fitting to the low temperature resistivity gives exponents of about 2, suggesting a Fermi liquid behavior in low temperature region. The general behavior in wide temperature region suggests that the electron-phonon scattering is still the dominant one. The magnetoresistance up to 9 tesla in the state under a pressure of 50.5 GPa shows an almost negligible effect, which suggests that the electric conduction in the pink-violet state is dominated by a single band. It is highly desired to have theoretical efforts in understanding the evolution of color and resistivity in this interesting system.

Abstract:The recent report of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydrides (Lu-N-H) has generated a great interest. However, conflicting results have raised doubts regarding superconductivity. Here, we combine high-throughput crystal structure predictions with a fast predictor of the superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) to shed light on the properties of Lu-N-H at 1 GPa. None of the predicted structures shows the potential to support high-temperature superconductivity and the inclusion of nitrogen favors the appearance of insulating phases. Despite the lack of near-ambient superconductivity, we consider alternative metastable templates and study their $T_c$ and dynamical stability including quantum anharmonic effects. The cubic Lu$_4$H$_{11}$N exhibits a high $T_c$ of 100 K at 20 GPa, a large increase compared to 30 K obtained in its parent LuH$_3$. Interestingly, it has a similar X-ray pattern to the experimentally observed one. The LaH$_{10}$-like LuH$_{10}$ and CaH$_6$-like LuH$_6$ become high-temperature superconductors at 175 GPa and 100 GPa, with $T_c$ of 286 K and 246 K, respectively. Our findings suggest that high-temperature superconductivity is not possible in stable phases at near-ambient pressure, but metastable high-$T_c$ templates exist at moderate and high pressures.

Abstract:Since the discovery of superconductivity in mercury at 4 K in 1911, searching for materials with superconductivity at higher temperatures towards practical conditions has been a primary enduring goal. The recent report of room-temperature superconductivity at near-ambient pressure in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride (Lu-H-N) by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. (Hereafter referred as D-G) seems a great step approaching the ultimate goal. Specifically, they claimed evidence of superconductivity on Lu-H-N with a maximum Tc of 294 K at 1 GPa. However, the failure to observe the drastic temperature-dependent resistance change above 200 K in high-pressure synthesized Lu-H-N compounds, a prerequisite for superconductivity, by researchers worldwide in all independent follow-up studies casts a heavy shadow on the authenticity of the claims. The sober questions are: what is the sample that produces the sharp resistance jump near room temperature? What are the reasons for the non-reproducibility of others who follow the D-G method of synthesis and the inscrutable low success rate (35%) in synthesizing the right sample even for the authors in Ref. 1? What causes the observed sharp resistance jump? Here, with a well-controlled experiment protocol, we repeatedly reproduced the near room-temperature sudden change of electrical resistance in the Lu-H-N sample, and we could quantitatively compare its behavior with the initial pure Lu in a normal metallic state. These results enable us to scrutinize the origin for the near-room temperature sharp resistance change, which is attributed to a metal-to-poor-conductor transition rather than superconductivity.

Abstract:The structure of the material responsible for the room temperature and near ambient pressure superconductivity reported in an N-doped lutetium hydride [Nature, 615, 244 (2023)] has not been conclusively determined. Herein, density functional theory calculations are performed in an attempt to uncover what it might be. Guided by a range of strategies including crystal structure prediction and modifications of existing structure types, we present an array of Lu-N-H phases that are dynamically stable at experimentally relevant pressures. Although none of the structures found are thermodynamically stable, and none are expected to remain superconducting above 17 K at 10 kbar, a number of metallic compounds with fcc Lu lattices -- as suggested by the experimental X-ray diffraction measurements of the majority phase -- are identified. The system whose calculated equation of states matches best with that measured for the majority phase is fluorite-type LuH2, whose 10 kbar superconducting critical temperature was estimated to be 0.09 K using the Allen-Dynes modified McMillan equation.

Ab initio study of the structural, vibrational and optical properties of potential parent structures of nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride

Abstract:The recent report of near-ambient conditions superconductivity in a nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride has inspired a large number of experimental studies with contradictory results. We model from first principles the physical properties of the possible parent structures of the reported superconductor, LuH$_2$ and LuH$_3$. We show that only the phonon band structure of LuH$_3$ can explain the reported Raman spectra due to the presence of hydrogens at the interstitial octahedral sites. However, this structure is stabilized by anharmonicity only above 6 GPa. We find that the intriguing color change with pressure in the reported superconductor is consistent with the optical properties of LuH$_2$, which are determined by the presence of an undamped interband plasmon. The plasmon blue-shifts with pressure and modifies the color of the sample without requiring any structural phase transition. Our findings suggest that the main component in the experiments is LuH$_2$ with some extra hydrogen atoms at octahedral sites. None of LuH$_2$ and LuH$_3$ superconduct at high temperatures.

Abstract:Absence of superconductivity in face‐centered cubic LuH3, which is maintained to ambient conditions through a high‐temperature and high‐pressure method using large volume press. Superconductivity at room temperature and near‐ambient pressures is a highly sought‐after phenomenon in physics and materials science. A recent study reported the presence of this phenomenon in N‐doped lutetium hydride [Nature 615, 244 (2023)], however, subsequent experimental and theoretical investigations have yielded inconsistent results. This study undertakes a systematic examination of synthesis methods involving high temperatures and pressures, leading to insights into the impact of the reaction path on the products and the construction of a phase diagram for lutetium hydrides. Notably, the high‐pressure phase of face‐centered cubic LuH3 (fcc‐LuH3) is maintained to ambient conditions through a high‐temperature and high‐pressure method. Based on temperature and anharmonic effects corrections, the lattice dynamic calculations demonstrate the stability of fcc‐LuH3 at ambient conditions. However, no superconductivity is observed above 2 K in resistance and magnetization measurements in fcc‐LuH3 at ambient pressure. This work establishes a comprehensive synthesis approach for lutetium hydrides, thereby enhancing the understanding of the high‐temperature and high‐pressure method employed in hydrides with superconductivity deeply.

Ternary Phase Diagram of Nitrogen Doped Lutetium Hydrides

Abstract:This paper presents the results of an extensive structural search of ternary solids containing lutetium, nitrogen and hydrogen. Based on thousands of thermodynamically stable structures, available online, the convex hull of the formation enthalpies is constructed. To obtain the correct energetic ordering, the highly accurate RSCAN DFT functional is used in high quality all-electron calculations. In this way possible pseudopotential errors are eliminated. A novel lutetium hydride structure (HLu$_2$) that is on the convex hull is found in our search. An electron phonon analysis however shows that it is not a candidate structure for near ambient superconductivity. Besides this structure, which appears to have been missed in previous searches, possibly due to different DFT methodologies, our results agree closely with the results of previously published structure search efforts. This shows, that the field of crystal structure prediction has matured to a state where independent methodologies produce consistent and reproducible results, underlining the trustworthiness of modern crystal structure predictions. Hence it is quite unlikely that a structure, that would give rise within standard BCS theory to the superconducting properties, claimed to have been observed by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0" href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-023-05742-0</a> , exists. We find a new purple phase of LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$ between blue and pink phase, and reveal that the sample color changes likely stem from pressure-driven redistribution of nitrogen and its interaction with the LuH$_2$ framework. No superconducting transition is found in all blue, purple, pink and red phases at temperatures 1.8-300 K and pressures 0-30 GPa. Instead, we identify a notable temperature-induced resistance anomaly of structural and/or electronic origin in LuH$_{2\pm\text{x}}$N$_y$, which is most pronounced in the pink phase and may have been erroneously interpreted as a sign of superconducting transition. This work establishes key benchmarks for nitrogen doped lutetium hydrides, allowing an in-depth understanding of the novel pressure-induced phase changes.

Investigations of pressurized Lu-N-H materials by using the hybrid functional

Abstract:Recently, Lu-N-H materials were reported to have room-temperature superconductivity, and the Hubbard U correction on the Lu's $\textit{f}$-electrons is necessary, and a constant U = 5.5 eV was applied to different Lu-N-H configurations (Nature 615, 244 (2023)). Following simulations indicate that the superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) of LuH$_{3}$ with U = 0 eV is 50 ~ 60 K, while the N-doped LuH$_{3}$ is below 30 K. Quite recently, calculations with U = 5 eV shows that the T$_{c}$ of N-doped LuH$_{3}$ exceeds 100 K. The properties of Lu-N-H are sensitive to the applied U values. Here, the structural and electronic Lu-N-H properties at high-pressure (0 ~ 10 GPa) are systematically investigated based on the hybrid functional. We show that different Lu-N-H configurations should possess different U values varying from 6.4 eV to 7.4 eV. Furthermore, at pressure ranging from 0 GPa to 1 GPa, the $\textit{f}$ and $\textit{d}$ band centers of N-doped LuH$_{3}$ show oscillation or even plateau, and the band gap of insulators also shows a platform near this pressure, this is consistent with the pressure range where room-temperature superconductivity appeared in Lu-N-H. Our work provides insights into the understanding of Lu-N-H materials and other hydrogen-rich superconductors based on the rare-earth elements.

Abstract:Following the recent report by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. (2023) of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium trihydride (LuH3-{\delta}N{\epsilon}), significant debate has emerged surrounding the composition and interpretation of the observed sharp resistance drop. Here, we meticulously revisit these claims through comprehensive characterization and investigations. We definitively identify the reported material as lutetium dihydride (LuH2), resolving the ambiguity surrounding its composition. Under similar conditions (270-295 K and 1-2 GPa), we replicate the reported sharp decrease in electrical resistance with a 30% success rate, aligning with Dasenbrock-Gammon et al.'s observations. However, our extensive investigations reveal this phenomenon to be a novel, pressure-induced metal-to-metal transition intrinsic to LuH2, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, nitrogen doping exerts minimal impact on this transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of LuH2 and LuH3 but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in these lutetium hydride systems. These findings pave the way for future research on lutetium hydride systems while emphasizing the crucial importance of rigorous verification in claims of ambient temperature superconductivity.
