Abstract:We report on the magnetic, electrical transport, caloric and electronic structure properties of TbFe 4.4 Al 7.6 polycrystalline alloy using experiment and theory. The alloy crystallizes in tetragonal structure with I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = b = 8.7234(5) Å and c = 5.0387(6) Å. It is ferrimagnetic with a compensation temperature of T cmp ∼ 151 K, Curie-Weiss temperature θ CW ∼ 172.11 K and an effective magnetic moment μ eff = (2.37±0.07) μ B /f.u with Z = 2. At low temperatures, kinetic arrest-like first-order phase transition is realized through the thermal hysteresis between field-cooled cooling and field-cooled warming curves of M(T) and virgin curves of M(H) and ρ(H) which are outside the hysteresis loops with metamagnetic transition. The high magnetic field suppression of multiple transitions and reduced coercive field H coer and remnant magnetization M rem with increasing temperature are reported. H coer and M rem cease to exist above the compensation temperature T cmp . A correlation between the isothermal magnetization and resistivity is discussed. Specific heat C(T) analysis reveals a Sommerfeld parameter of γ = 0.098 J.mol -1 .K -2 and a Debye temperature of θ D ∼ 351.2 K. The sample is metallic as inferred from the ρ(T) behavior and Sommerfeld parameter. The magnetoresistance of the alloy is low and negative which indicates the suppression of weak spin-fluctuations. This alloy avoids the tricritical point despite first-to-second order phase transition. The electronic and magnetic structure calculations, by making use of full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method, suggest metallic ferrimagnetic ground state of TbFe 4.4 Al 7.6 with Tb atoms contributing ferromagnetically (5.87 μ B ) and Fe atoms with antiferromagnetic contribution (2.67 μ B ), in close agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract:The effect of Al substitution for Fe on the magnetic and magnetostrictive properties, the spin reorientation and Mossbauer spectra of a series of Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1-xAlx)1.95 alloys (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35) at room temperature and 77 K has been systemically investigated. It was found that the primary phase of Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1-xAlx)1.95 is the MgCu2-type cubic laves phase structure when x 0.4. The magnetization and magnetostriction measurements showed that a small amount of Al substitution is beneficial to a decrease in the magneto crystalline anisotropy for x 0.15, and that the magnetostriction, the spontaneous magnetostrictionλ111 and the Curie temperature Tc decrease greatly. The study of PPMS and Mossbauer indicated that the easy magnetization direction in the {110} plane deviates slightly from the main axis of symmetry with the changes of composition and temperature, namely spin reorientation. A small amount of non-magnetic phase exists for x = 0.15 in Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1-xAlx)1.95 alloys and the alloys become paramagnetic for x 0.15 at room temperture, but at 77 K the alloys still remain in magnetic phase even for x = 0.2.

Coercivcity decreases rapidly with increasing of temperature, and appears the maximum value at Al content x = 0.20. The magnetostriction of the Tb0.3Dy0.6Pr0.1(Fe1-xAlx)(1.95) alloys decreases drastically with increasing x and the giant magnetostrictive effect disappears for x > 0.15. Fortunately, a small amount of Al substitution is beneficial to a decrease in the anisotropy. The spin reorientation temperature decreases with increasing x. The magnetic properties are determined by both Pr and Al substitution effects.

Abstract:The effect of Al substitution for Fe on crystal structure, magnetostriction and spontaneous magnetostriction, anisotropy and spin reorientation of a series of polycrystalline Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1−xAlx)1.95 alloys (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35) at room temperature and 77 K was investigated systematically. It was found that the primary phase of Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1−xAlx)1.95 is the MgCu2-type cubic Laves phase structure when x < 0.4 and the lattice constant a of Tb0.3Dy0.7(Fe1−xAlx)1.95 increases approximately and monotonically with the increase of x. Abstract:Small amounts of Al and Mn were introduced to partly substitute for Fe in polycrystalline Terfenol alloy TbFe2 as Tb(Fe0.9MnxAl0.1-x)(2)(x=0-0.1). Their effects on structure, magnetic properties, magnetostriction, and hardness were studied. X-ray diffraction shows that the studied alloys remain cubic Laves phase. The saturation magnetization increases with Mn content. Curie temperature dramatically decreases with Mn addition and is further lowered due to the Al replacement. A magnetostriction of 1890 ppm at 19 kOe was obtained in the modified alloy x=0.06. Magnetostriction value at low field is distinctly greater, especially when x=0.04, than that of the TbFe2 or the Mn/Al. At 1 kOe, the magnetostriction of the x=0.04 alloy is 250 ppm compared to, 22 ppm in the base alloy. Addition of both Mn and Al improves the maximum value of dynamic strain coefficient d(33(max)) and lowers the corresponding field for Tb(Fe0.9MnxAl0.1-x)(2) alloys as compared with the base alloy. When x=0.04, d(33(max)) is 360x10(-9) Oe(-1), 1.7 times higher than that of the base alloy, while the corresponding field is 0.562 kOe, 3.1 times lower than that of the base alloy. It was found that all the compositions of Tb-0.3 Dy-0.7 (Fe1-xAlx)(1.95) substantially retained the MgCu2-type C-15 cubic Laves phase structure and the lattice constant increases with increasing x. The substitution of Al increases slightly the magnetostriction in low magnetic field ( H less than or equal to 40kA.m(-1)) when x < 0.15, however, the magnetostriction decreases sharply, but is saturated more easily with increasing x in a higher applied field and the magnetostrictive effect disappears at x > 0.15. The intrinsic magnetostriction lambda(111) decreases sharply also with incresasing x. The Mossbauer spectra show that for 0 less than or equal to x < 0.15 alloys, spin reorientation is present with increasing Al concentration and the easy magnetization direction (EMD) undergoes the transition from [1 1 1] to [u v 0] and to [ u v w]. A small amount of non-magnetical phase exists for x = 0.15, and the alloys become paramagnetism when x > 0.15. The measurements of relative susceptibility indicate that the temperature of spin reorientation decreases with increasing x.
Giant coercivity, resistivity upturn, and anomalous Hall effect in ferrimagnetic FeTb

Abstract:Despite the blooming interest, the transition-metal rare-earth ferrimagnets have not been comprehensively understood in terms of their coercivity and transport properties. Here, we report a systematic study of the magnetic and transport properties of ferrimagnetic FeTb alloy by varying the layer thickness and temperature. The FeTb is tuned from the Tb-dominated regime to the Fe-dominated regime via the layer thickness, without varying the composition. The coercivity closely follows the $1/\cos\theta_H$ scaling (where $\theta_H$ is the polar angle of the external magnetic field) and increases quasi-exponentially upon cooling (exceeding 90 kOe at low temperatures), revealing that the nature of the coercivity is the thermally-assisted domain wall depinning field. The resistivity exhibits a quasi-linear upturn upon cooling possibly due to thermal vibrations of the structure factor of the amorphous alloy. The existing scaling laws of the anomalous Hall effect in the literature break down for the amorphous FeTb that are either Fe- or Tb-dominated. These findings should advance the understanding of the transition-metal-rare-earth ferrimagnets and the associated ferrimagnetic phenomena in spintronics.

Abstract:A structural, magnetic and Mössbauer study of a series of Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 (Fe 1− x Al x ) 1.95 alloys ( x =0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35) at room temperature is presented. It was found that the primary phase of the Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 (Fe 1− x Al x ) 1.95 alloys is the MgCu 2 -type cubic Laves phase structure when x <0.3 and a small amount of a second phase, RFe 3 (R: rare-earth element), is present when 0.3≤ x ≤0.35. The lattice constant of the Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 (Fe 1− x Al x ) 1.95 alloys increases approximately monotonically with increasing x . The substitution of Al increases slightly the magnetostriction in a low magnetic field ( H ≤500 Oe). However, the magnetostriction decreases sharply, but is saturated more easily with increasing x in a higher applied field. The analysis of the Mössbauer spectra allows the determination of the easy axes of magnetization in these alloys. Moreover, the dependence of the hyperfine-field, isomer shift and quadrupole splitting on the Al concentration, x , for the Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 (Fe 1− x Al x ) 1.95 alloys are reported and discussed.

However, the substitution of transition metal Mn and Co decreases slightly the magnetostrictionλ s . It was also found that the effect of different substitutions on the spontaneous magnetostrictionλ 111 is distinct. The analysis of the Mössbauer spectra indicates that the easy magnetization direction in the {110} plane deviates slightly from the main axis of symmetry for Al and Ga substitution, namely spin reorientation, but it does not change evidently for B, Mn and Co substitution.
Magnetic Properties of Sm-Fe-Ti and Its Nitrides with TbCu7-type Structure

Abstract:Alloys of Sm10Fe90Tix (x = 4.5 and 6) with a stable TbCu7-type structure phase and its nitrides have been investigated. The parent compound has planar anisotropy. The nitride has a Curie temperature T-c = 733 K, anisotropy field mu(0)H(a) = 10.5 T and saturation magnetization M(S) = 140J/Tkg at room temperature. The room temperature coercivity mu(0i)H(c) reaches 2.3 T and 1.8 T for Sm10Fe85.5Ti4.5Ny and Sm10Fe84Ti6Ny isotropic powders, respectively, which were synthesized by high-energy ball milling and nitrogenating.
Exchange bias-like effect in TbFeAl intermetallic induced by atomic disorder

Abstract:Exchange bias-like effect observed in the intermetallic compound TbFeAl, which displays a magnetic phase transition at $T^h_c \approx$ 198~K and a second one at $T^l_c \approx$ 154~K, is reported. {\em Jump}-like features are observed in the isothermal magnetization, $M (H)$, at 2~K which disappear above 8~K. The field-cooled magnetization isotherms below 10~K show loop-shifts that are reminiscent of exchange bias, also supported by {\em training effect}. Significant coercive field, $H_c \approx$ 1.5~T at 2~K is observed in TbFeAl which, after an initial increase, shows subsequent decrease with temperature. The exchange bias field, $H_{eb}$, shows a slight increase and subsequent leveling off with temperature. It is argued that the inherent crystallographic disorder among Fe and Al and the high magnetocrystalline anisotropy related to Tb$^{3+}$ lead to the exchange bias effect. TbFeAl is recently reported to show magnetocaloric effect and the present discovery of exchange bias makes this compound a multifunctional one. The result obtained on TbFeAl generalizes the observation of exchange bias in crystallographically disordered materials and gives impetus for the search for materials with {\em exchange bias induced by atomic disorder.}

However， a small amount of Al substitution is beneficial to a decrease in magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The analysis of the Mssbauer spectra indicates that the easy magnetization direction in the {110} plane deviates slightly from the main axis of symmetry with the increase of Al concentration x，namely spin reorientation takes place, thereby leading to the change of macroscopical magnetism and magetostriction.
Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Pr(Fe 1-X Co X ) 2 and Pr 1-Y Tb Y (fe 0.4 Co 0.6 ) 2 Alloys

Abstract:Measurement of X-ray diffraction, magnetization and magnetostriction was made on the Pr(Fe1-xCox)2 (x=0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) and Pr1-yTby(Fe0.4Co0.6)2 (y=0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) alloy series. It was found that a cubic phase with the MgCu2 structure can be obtained in the Pr(Fe1-xCox)2 series only at x=0.6. The Pr1-yTby(Fe0.4Co0.6)2 system has the cubic MgCu2 structure over the studied range for y. The lattice constant and magnetization decrease and the Curie temperature increases with increasing y. At 7 K, Pr1-yTby(Fe0.4Co0.6)2 samples are found to have huge intrinsic coercivities, which are associated with narrow domain walls. It is also found from X-ray measurement that in Pr1-yTby(Fe0.4Co0.6)2 the spontaneous magnetostriction λ111 increases due to Tb substitution, while the saturation magnetostriction λs is much lower than λ111. This can be attributed to the large value of λ100 with an opposite sign to λ111, which may be caused by the filling of the d band due to Co substitution.

Abstract:The evolutions of the crystallographic structure and magnetic phase transition in Tb2In1−xAlx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) alloys are investigated in this work. By gradually alloying antiferromagnetic orthorhombic Tb2Al, the crystalline structure of ferromagnetic Tb2In is gradually distorted from the hexagonal type for x ≤ 0.3 to orthorhombic one for x ≥ 0.4. The ferromagnetic ground state for x ≤ 0.4 is also gradually evolved into antiferromagnetic one for x ≥ 0.5. The phase transition temperature is decreased monotonously. At the critical composition of x = 0.4, the weak field-triggered metamagnetism is realized, leading into the enhanced maximum of magnetic entropy change from 6.6 J kg−1 K−1 in Tb2In to 10.6 J kg−1 K−1 in Tb2In0.6Al0.4 for a field of 5.6 × 106 A/m. The origin is supposed to be from the lattice distortion due to the critical composition at the phase borderline.

Abstract:The effect of Al substitution for Fe on the structure,magnetostriction,anisotropy and spin reorientation of a series of Tb_ 0.3 Dy_ 0.7 (Fe_ 1-x Al_x)_ 1.95 alloys(x=0,0.05,0.1,0.15,0.20,0.25,0.30,0.35) at room temperature has been investigated.It was found that all compositions of Tb_ 0.3 Dy_ 0.7 (Fe_ 1-x Al_x)_ 1.95 substantially retained the MgCu_2-type C-15 cubic Laves phase structure and the lattice constant increases with increasing x.The substitution of Al increases slightly the magnetostriction in a low magnetic field (H ≤40kA/m) when x0.15,while the magnetostriction decreases sharply,but is saturated more easily with increasing x in a higher applied field and the magnetostrictive effect disappears at x0.15.The intrinsic magnetostriction λ_ 111 decreases sharply also with incresasing x.The Mssbauer spectra show that the easy magnetization direction(EMD) of Tb_ 0.3 Dy_ 0.7 (Fe_ 1-x Al_x)_ 1.95 may deviate slightly from the major axis of symmetry 111 with the component and temperature,i.e.spin reocientation are present.A small amount of non-magnetic phase exists for x=0.15 and the alloys become paramagnetism when x0.15.

Abstract:The effects of Al substitution for Fe on the structure, magnetics, magnetostriction, anisotropy and spin reorientation of a series of Tb0.3Dy0.6Pr0.1(Fe1−x Al x )1.95 alloys (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, 0.3) at room temperature have been investigated. The alloys of Tb0.3Dy0.6Pr0.1(Fe1−x Al x )1.95 substantially retain MgCu2-type C-15 cubic Laves phase structure when x<0.2. The mixed phases appear with x = 0.2, and cubic Laves phase decreases with increasing x. The magnetostriction of the Tb0.3Dy0.6Pr0.1(Fe1−x Al x )1.95 alloys decreases drastically with increasing x and the giant magnetostrictive effect disappears for x > 0.15. Fortunately, a small amount of Al substitution is beneficial to a decrease in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The spin reorientation temperature decreases with increasing x. The analysis of the Mössbauer spectra indicates that the easy magnetization direction in the {110} plane deviates slightly from the main axis of symmetry with the increase of Al concentration x, namely, spin reorientation, resulting in the change of macroscopical magnetic properties and magnetostriction. The hyperfine field decreases, but the isomer shifts increases with Al concentration increasing and the quadruple splitting QS shows a weak concentration dependence.

Abstract:Temperature dependent magnetic, electrical transport and thermal properties of polycrystalline orthorhombic CeFe2Al8intermetallic compound have been studied along with its isostructural La counterpart, LaFe2Al8. For the cerium compound, low fielddcmagnetization exhibits an antiferromagnetic like ordering (TN) ∼ 4 K. The main feature of the magnetic susceptibility plot is a broad hump spanning a large temperature range, indicating mixed valence of Ce in the compound, in good agreement with reported literature. However, contrary to the reported observations we find that the mixed valence state is very robust and was evident even up to very high magnetic fields (> 2 T). Further, in this work we report 3d core level photoemission spectra of cerium in CeFe2Al8, to understand the valence state of cerium ions in this system. Additionally, from resistivity measurements it is found that, CeFe2Al8is metallic with no indication of any anomaly, till the lowest temperature of measurement. Specific heat measurements show very low value of heat capacity and electronic contribution. The isostructural La analogue, LaFe2Al8compound shows broadness in susceptibility with maxima around 44 K which may be attributed to ordering of Fe moments. The comparison of Ce and La compounds brings out the role of Fe magnetic moments which may be responsible for competing with cerium moments and resulting in the dilution of long-range magnetic order, also contributing to magnetic frustration in CeFe2Al8.
