Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the influence of build orientation and layer thickness on manufacturing accuracy, material consumption, and printing time of complete denture (CD) bases fabricated using digital light processing (DLP). Methods: The CD base was designed on the basis of a standard maxillary edentulous model. Seventy CD bases were fabricated using a DLP 3D printer (Pro95, SprintRay, USA) and printable CD base material (DENTCA Denture Base II, Dentca, USA) at seven build orientations (0°, labial 45°, labial 90°, posterior 45°, posterior 90°, buccal 45°, and buccal 90°) and two types of layer thicknesses (50- and 100 μm) (n = 5). All test CD bases were digitalized and superimposed on the reference cast by section-based best-fit alignment. For evaluating manufacturing accuracy, deviation analysis was performed to compare the test data with the reference cast using the "3D Compare" in the 3D metrology software. The printing time and material consumption were calculated using slicing software and recorded, respectively. The two-way ANOVA test was used for accuracy evaluation, and the non-parametric test was used to evaluate printing time and material consumption (α = 0.05). Results: Statistically significant differences were found in the manufacturing accuracy (p < 0.001), printing time (p < 0.001), and material consumption (p < 0.001) among the build orientation groups. The labial 45° and labial 90° groups showed the best accuracy. The 90° build orientations required the least material consumption and longest printing time; the labial 45° group consumed the most printing materials; the 0° group required the shortest printing time to fabricate a CD base. Moreover, the layer thickness influenced the printing time (p < 0.001) rather than the accuracy (p = 0.560) and material consumption (p = 1.000). Conclusions: When DLP was used to fabricate the CD bases, the build orientation influenced the manufacturing accuracy, material consumption, and printing time. However, the layer thickness only affected the printing time. Clinical significance: This study suggests that optimizing the build orientation can improve the manufacturing accuracy and reduce the material consumption and printing time of a DLP-printed CD base. The fast-printing setting (100 μm layer thickness) can reduce the printing time without compromising the manufacturing accuracy of the CD base.
The Effect of Build Orientation on the Dimensional Accuracy of 3D-Printed Mandibular Complete Dentures Manufactured with a Multijet 3D Printer.

Abstract:Purpose To compare the dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed mandibular complete dentures with different build orientations. Material and Methods A mandibular complete denture was digitized as a virtual reference file. The reference file was 3D-printed at the 0 degrees, 45 degrees, and 90 degrees build orientations with a MultiJet 3D printer (Projet MJP 3600 Dental, 3D systems, Rock Hill, SC). A total of 27 complete dentures were 3D-printed with 9 samples for each orientation. All printed dentures were digitized and separated into teeth, denture extension and intaglio test surfaces. The dimensional accuracy (in root mean square, RMS) was evaluated by comparing whole denture and 3 test surfaces with the reference file. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and a Post-Hoc all pairs Bonferroni test were used to determine statistical differences (alpha = 0.05). Results For the dimensional accuracy on whole denture, the 45 degrees build orientation group showed the smallest RMS (0.170 +/- 0.043 mm) than those of the 0 degrees build orientation group (0.185 +/- 0.060 mm, p < 0.001) and 90 degrees build orientation group (0.183 +/- 0.044 mm, p < 0.001). For the dimensional accuracy on the teeth, denture extension and intaglio test surfaces, the 45 degrees build orientation group also show the smallest RMS values (0.140 +/- 0.044 mm at teeth surface, 0.176 +/- 0.058 mm at denture extension and 0.207 +/- 0.006 mm at intaglio surface). The 0 degrees and 90 degrees build orientation groups had similar accuracy at the teeth (0.149 +/- 0.056 mm versus 0.154 +/- 0.056 mm, p = 0.164) and denture extension surfaces (0.200 +/- 0.025 mm vs 0.196 +/- 0.013 mm, p = 1.000). However, 0 degrees build orientation group (0.228 +/- 0.010 mm) has significantly higher RMS values then those of 90 degrees build orientation group (0.218 +/- 0.057 mm) in the intaglio surface (p = 0.032). The teeth surfaces were most accurate in each build orientation groups, while the intaglio surfaces were least accurate. Conclusions The build orientation affected the dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed mandibular complete dentures, and the 45 degrees build orientation resulted in the most accurate 3D-printed denture from a MultiJet 3D printer.
Effect of build angle, resin layer thickness and viscosity on the surface properties and microbial adhesion of denture bases manufactured using digital light processing

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate differences in the surface properties and microbial adhesion of denture base resins for digital light processing (DLP) with varying resin layer thicknesses (LT), build angles (BA), and resin viscosities. Methods: Two denture base resins for DLP with different viscosities (high and low) were used to prepare disk specimens applying two manufacturing parameters: 1) LT (50 or 100 μm) and 2) BA (0-, 45-, and 90-degree). Surface roughness and contact angle values were measured on the test surfaces (n=10 per group). Streptococcus oralis and Candida albicans absorbance was measured to assess microorganism attachment (n=6 per group). A three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted, considering the main effects and their interactions (viscosity, LT, and BA). Post-hoc multiple pairwise comparisons were performed. All data were analyzed at a level of significance (P) of 0.05. Results: LT and BA significantly affected the surface roughness and contact angle of the specimens, depending on resin viscosity (P<.001). Absorbance measurement showed no significant interaction between the three factors (P>.05). However, significant interactions were observed between viscosity and BA (P<.05) and between LT and BA (P<.05). Conclusions: Regardless of the viscosity and LT, discs with a 0-degree BA showed the least roughness. High-viscosity specimens fabricated with a 0-degree BA had the lowest contact angle. Regardless of the LT and viscosity, discs with a 0-degree BA showed the lowest S. oralis attachment. Attachment of C. albicans was the least on the disk with 50 μm LT, irrespective of the viscosity. Clinical significance: Clinicians should consider the effects of LT and BA on surface roughness, contact angle, and microbial adhesion of DLP-generated dentures, which can differ depending on resin viscosity. A 50 μm LT and 0-degree BA can be used with a high-viscosity resin to fabricate denture bases with less microbial adhesion.
[Effect of printing orientation on physical and mechanical properties of 3D printing prosthodontic base resin materials].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the influence of forming direction on the surface characteristics, elastic modulus, bending strength and fracture toughness of printed parts and the relationship between forming direction and force direction, and to provide scientific basis and guidance for the clinical application of oral denture base resin materials. METHODS:The 3D printing technology was used to print denture base resin samples. The shape and size of the samples referred to the current standard for testing conventional denture base materials. The samples used for physical performance testing were cylindrical (with a diameter of 15 mm and a thickness of 1 mm) and printed at different angles along the Z axis (0°, 45°, 90°). Scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microscopic topography of the different samples. The color stability of different samples was observed by color stabilizer. The surface roughness of the samples was analyzed by using surface roughness tester. The Vickers hardness was measured to analyze the hardness of the samples. The samples used for mechanical performance testing were rectangular (elastic modulus and bending strength: A length of 64 mm, a width of 10 mm, and a height of 3.3 mm; fracture toughness: A length of 39 mm, a width of 8 mm, and a height of 4 mm), divided into two groups: W group and H group. The W group was printed from the bottom up along the Z axis with the length × width as the bottom surface parallel to the X, Y axis plane, while the H group printed from the bottom up along the Z axis with the length × height as the bottom surface parallel to the X, Y axis plane. The forming angles of both groups were equally divided into 0°, 45°, and 90°. The elastic modulus, bending strength and fracture toughness of different samples were studied through universal mechanical testing machine. SPSS 22.0 software was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS:The microscopic topography and roughness of different samples were closely related to the printing direction, with significant differences between the 0°, 45°, and 90° specimens. The 0° specimens had the smoothest surface (roughness < 1 μm). The surface of the 45° specimen was the roughest (roughness>3 μm). The microhardness of the 0° sample was the best [(196.13±0.20) MPa], with a significant difference compared with the 90° sample [(186.62±4.81) MPa, P < 0.05]. The mechanical properties of different samples were also closely related to the printing direction. The elastic modulus, bending strength, and fracture toughness of the 45° samples in the W group were the highest compared with the other groups. The results of elastic modulus showed that in the H group, the 45° specimens had the highest elastic mo-dulus, which was significantly different from the 0° and 90° specimens (P < 0.05). The elastic modulus of 0° and 45° specimens in the W group were higher than those in 90° specimens (P < 0.05). The bending strength results showed that there was no significant difference between the specimens from dif-ferent angles in the H group. The bending strength of the 90° specimens in the W group was the smallest, and there was a significant difference between 90° and the 0° and 45° specimens (P < 0.05); And the bendind strength of the 0° and 45° specimens in the W group was significantly higher than that of the 0° and 45° specimens in the H group (P < 0.05). The fracture toughness results showed that the fracture toughness of the H group specimens was lower than 1.9 MPa m1/2, which was specified in the denture base standard. The 45° samples in the W group were the highest, with significant differences compared with the 0° and 90° samples (P < 0.05). And the 90° samples of the W group specimens were lower than 1.9 MPa m1/2. And the fracture toughness of the 45° specimen in the W group was significantly higher than that of all the specimens in the H group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION:The 0° samples had relatively better physical properties. The 45° samples had the best mechanical properties. But the fracture toughness of specimens (H group and 90° samples of W group) did not yet meet clinical requirements. That indicated that the characteristics of the 3D printing denture base resin were affected by the printing direction. Only when the performance of the printed samples in all directions met the minimum requirements of the standard, they could be used in clinical practice.

Abstract:Objectives: In this in vitro study, the effects of additive manufacturing (AM) methods and build angles on the trueness and precision of 3D-printed palatal plate orthodontic appliances for newborns and infants were examined. Methods: Specimens were fabricated by different representative AM methods, including digital light processing (DLP), fused filament fabrication (FFF), and MultiJet printing (MJP). Three build angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) were used. After scanning, all specimens were analyzed using the 3D inspection software. The root mean square values were measured for trueness and precision. Color maps were created to detect deviations in samples. The data were statistically analyzed with a two-way ANOVA. Results: The trueness and precision were statistically influenced by both AM methods and build angles (p < 0.05). Moreover, the root mean square values of the 45° DLP (0.0221 ± 0.0017 μm) and the 0° MJP (0.0217 ± 0.0014 μm) were significantly lower compared to those in other groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: AM methods (DLP, FFF, and MJP) and build angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) significantly impacted the dimensional accuracy of additively manufactured palatal plate orthodontic appliances. Also, the 45° DLP and the 0° MJP were associated with the highest trueness and precision. Clinical significance: All tested AM methods with different build angles yielded clinically acceptable outcomes (within an acceptance range of ±300 μm for trueness), achieving the highest accuracy with a technology-specific suitable build angle.

Abstract:Genetic testing for predisposition cancer syndromes has been broadly implemented in the clinical setting in the last several years. Some of the most recognisable familial cancer syndromes for which genetic testing is available are hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), and hereditary breast and ovarian syndrome (HBOS). Genetic testing in these individuals may have relevant medical and psychological implications for them and their families. Whether individuals at risk for hereditary colorectal syndromes such HNPCC or FAP have different motivations and concerns about genetic testing than individuals with HBOS is not known. The first studies addressing motivations for genetic testing for cancer predisposition were carried out in the mid 1990s.1–6 These studies were conducted not in people actually undergoing testing but in the general population or among first-degree relatives of individuals with breast, ovarian, or colon cancer. They revealed that willingness to undergo genetic testing was associated with higher perception of cancer risk or of being a gene carrier and that the most common reasons for their stated intent to pursue genetic testing were to learn about one’s children’s risks, be reassured regarding one’s own risk, and a wish to increase screening practices. Concerns about genetic testing included mistrust of test accuracy, worry about losing health insurance, and fear of emotional reactions if the test was positive. Abstract:Purpose: This in vitro study investigated the effect of build orientation on the wear resistance and hardness of denture teeth fabricated using digital light processing (DLP) compared to other denture tooth materials. Methods: Disc-shaped specimens were prepared using denture tooth monomers and DLP devices in three build orientations: 0°, 45°, and 90°. Specimens of the same shape were fabricated using denture tooth materials for subtractive manufacturing, commercially available polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin, and composite resin. The wear resistance was evaluated as the wear volume loss after 50,000 wear cycles using a ball-on-disc wear device in water for two-body wear and poppy seed slurry for three-body wear. The Vickers hardness values of the materials were measured. Two-way and one-way analyses of variance were performed for wear resistance and hardness, respectively, followed by Tukey's honest significance test. Results: The interaction between the denture tooth resins and maximum wear volume was significant (P < 0.01). The 0° build orientation exhibited the lowest wear volume in the three-body wear test and the highest hardness among the three build orientations. The 0° DLP-fabricated specimens demonstrated significantly less wear volume than that of the PMMA specimens and a wear volume comparable to that of the milled specimens. However, the 0° DLP-fabricated specimens showed significantly lower hardness than that of the milled and PMMA specimens. The composite resin specimens exhibited the highest wear resistance and hardness. Conclusions: A 0° build orientation is recommended for DLP-fabricated denture teeth compared to 45° and 90° orientations to achieve greater wear resistance and hardness.

Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the interaction among the three factors (viscosity, LT, and BA). Statistical significance was set at P < .05. Results: Effects of LT and BA on hardness differed according to viscosity, with significant interactions among three factors (P=.027). Regardless of LT or BA, the low-viscosity group had higher hardness than the high-viscosity group (P<.001). In terms of flexural strength, no significant interaction was detected between the factors (P=.212), however, the effects of LT and BA were significant (P=.003 and P<.001, respectively). Regarding trueness, a significant interaction was observed between viscosity and BA (P=.001). Low-viscosity group had higher trueness than high-viscosity group when the 45- and 90-degree BA were applied (P<.001). Conclusions: LT and BA significantly affected the mechanical properties and trueness of the 3DP denture base, depending on the viscosity. For hardness and trueness, using low-viscosity resin and manufacturing with 50-μm LT and 45-degree BA are recommended. Clinical significance: Resin viscosity affects the influence of LT and BA on the hardness, flexural strength, and trueness of DLP-generated denture bases. A 50-μm LT and 45-degree BA can be used with a low-viscosity resin to fabricate denture bases with higher hardness and trueness.
The impact of base design and restoration type on the resin consumption, trueness, and dimensional stability of dental casts additively manufactured from liquid crystal display 3D printers

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effects of two base types and three restoration designs on the resin consumption and trueness of the 3D-printed dental casts. Additionally, the study explored the dimensional stability of these 3D-printed dental casts after 1 year of storage. Materials and methods: Various types of reference dental casts were specifically designed to represent three types of dental restoration fabrications, including full-arch (FA), long-span (LS), and single-unit (SU) prostheses. The reference casts were digitized with a dental laboratory scanner and used to create flat and hollow base designs (N = 18) for the 3D-printed study casts. The 3D-printed study casts were digitized and evaluated against their corresponding references immediately after 3D printing and again after 1 year of storage, with the trueness quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE) at both time points. Volumes of resin used were recorded to measure resin consumption, and the weights of the 3D-printed study casts were also measured. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and a Tukey post hoc test, α = 0.05. Results: Volumetric analysis showed the flat-base design had significantly higher resin consumption with weights for the FA group at 42.51 ± 0.16 g, the LS group at 31.64 ± 0.07 g, and the SU group at 27.67 ± 0.31 g, as opposed to 26.22 ± 1.01 g, 22.86 ± 0.93 g, and 20.10 ± 0.19 g for the hollow designs respectively (p < 0.001). Trueness, assessed through two-way ANOVA, revealed that the flat-base design had lower RMSE values indicating better trueness in the LS (54 ± 6 µm) and SU (59 ± 7 µm) groups compared to the hollow-base design (LS: 73 ± 5, SU: 99 ± 11 µm, both p < 0.001), with no significant difference in the FA group (flat-base: 50 ± 3, hollow: 47 ± 5 µm, p = 0.398). After 1 year, the flat-base design demonstrated superior dimensional stability in the LS (flat base: 56 ± 6 µm, hollow base: 149 ±45 µm, p < 0.001) and SU groups (flat base: 95 ± 8 µm, hollow base: 183 ±27 µm, p < 0.001), with the FA group showing no significant difference in the base design (flat base: 47 ± 9, hollow base: 62 ± 12 µm, p = 0.428). Conclusions: The hollow-base design group showed lower resin consumption than the flat-base design group. However, the flat-base designs exhibited superior trueness and less distortion after 1 year of storage. These findings indicate that despite the higher material usage, flat-base designs provide better initial accuracy and maintain their dimensional stability over time for most groups.
Trueness of 3D printed partial denture frameworks: build orientations and support structure density parameters

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of build orientations and density of support structures on the trueness of the 3D printed removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks. Materials and methods: A maxillary Kennedy class III and mandibular class I casts were 3D scanned and used to design and produce two 3D virtual models of RPD frameworks. Using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, 47 RPD frameworks were fabricated at 3 different build orientations (100, 135 and 150-degree angles) and 2 support structure densities. All frameworks were scanned and 3D compared to the original virtual RPD models by metrology software to check 3D deviations quantitatively and qualitatively. The accuracy data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA for build orientation comparison and independent sample t-test for structure density comparison at (α = .05). Points study analysis targeting RPD components and representative color maps were also studied. Results: The build orientation of 135-degree angle of the maxillary frameworks showed the lowest deviation at the clasp arms of tooth 26 of the 135-degree angle group. The mandibular frameworks with 150-degree angle build orientation showed the least deviation at the rest on tooth 44 and the arm of the I-bar clasp of tooth 45. No significant difference was seen between different support structure densities. Conclusion: Build orientation had an influence on the accuracy of the frameworks, especially at a 135-degree angle of maxillary design and 150-degree of mandibular design. The difference in the support's density structure revealed no considerable effect on the accuracy.
Accuracy of the intaglio surface of 3D-printed hybrid resin-ceramic crowns, veneers and table-tops: An in vitro study

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to examine the influence of the build angle on the accuracy (trueness and precision) of 3D printed crowns, table-tops and veneers with a hybrid resin-ceramic material.METHODS: One crown, on table-top and one veneer were printed in five different build angles (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°) (n = 50) with the digital light processing (DLP) system (Varseo XS, Bego) using hybrid resin (Varseo Smile Crown<sup>plus</sup> A3, Bego). All printed restorations were scanned using the laboratory scanner (D2000, 3Shape) and matched onto the initial reference design in metrology software (Geomagic Control X, 3D Systems). The root mean square error (RMSE) was calculated between the scanned and reference data. The data was statistically analyzed using the Tukey multiple comparison test and Wilcoxon multiple comparison test.RESULTS: The crown group showed higher trueness at 30° (0.021 ± 0.002) and 45° (0.020 ± 0.002), and table-tops at 0° (0.015 ± 0.001) and 30° (0.014 ± 0.001) (p < 0.0001). Veneers demonstrated higher trueness at 30° (0.016 ± 0.002) (p < 0.0001). All three restoration types demonstrated the lowest trueness at a 90° build angle and portrayed deviations along the z axis. The veneer and table-top groups showed the lowest precision at 90° (veneers: 0.021 ± 0.008; table-tops: 0.013 ± 0.003). The crown group portrayed the lowest precision at 45° (0.017 ± 0.005) (p < 0.0001).CONCLUSION: The build angle of DLP-printed hybrid resin-ceramic restorations influences their accuracy.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Considering the build angle is important to achieve a better accuracy of 3D-printed resin-ceramic hybrid restorations. This may help predict or avoid the interference points between a restoration and a die and minimize the clinical adjustments.

Dimensional reliability in CAD/CAM production of complete denture bases: A comparative study of milling and various 3D printing technologies

Abstract:This study aims to assess the dimensional accuracy of complete denture bases fabricated from different CAD/CAM technologies and a conventional method, including milling (CNC), PolyJet (PJ), laser sintering (SLS), digital light processing (DLP), and injection molding (IM). It also examines the influence of the removal of technology-specific connectors or support structures when present. Denture base surfaces were digitized using a laboratory scanner, and virtual measurement points were calculated with tetrahedral reference geometries. Defined distances were measured in all spatial directions and compared to design data (p<0.05), revealing significant differences in sagittal (p=0.004), transversal (p<0.001), and vertical (p<0.001) dimensions. Connector removal had no significant impact for CNC but significantly affected DLP. All technologies yielded clinically acceptable results, with CNC milling demonstrating the best overall outcome.

Abstract:Objective Three-dimensional (3D) printing is increasingly being utilised in the dental field because of its time-saving potential and cost effectiveness. It enables dental practitioners to eliminate several fabrication steps, achieve higher precision, and attain consistency in complex prosthetic models. The properties of 3D-printed resin materials can be affected by many factors, including the printing orientation (PO) and insufficient post-curing time (CT). This study aimed to investigate the effect of PO and CT on the mechanical and physical properties of a 3D-printed denture base resin (NextDent). Methods 3D-printed specimens were fabricated in 0°, 45°, and 90° POs, followed by three CTs (20, 30, and 50 min). The microhardness was tested using a Vickers hardness test, while the flexural property was evaluated using a three-point bending test. Sorption and solubility were measured after the specimens had been stored in an artificial saliva for 42 days, and the degree of conversion during polymerisation was analysed using Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy. Results The flexural strength of the material significantly increased (p < 0.05) when the printing orientation was changed from 0° to 90°. A similar increase was observed in the hardness, degree of conversion, and water sorption results. In general, no significant difference (p > 0.05) in any of the tested properties was found when the post-curing times were increased from 20 to 50 min. Significance The highest physical and mechanical properties of the 3D-printed denture base resin can be obtained by printing vertically (90° angle to the platform base). The minimal post-curing time to achieve ideal results is 30 min, as further curing will have no significant effect on the properties of the material.

Abstract:This paper explores the implications of the use of System Dynamics to model dramatic works and examines the model used in Pamela Lee Hopkinsâ€™ â€œSimulating Hamlet in the classroom.â€ This paper addresses this issue from both a literary and a modelling perspective. It begins by discussing the use of System Dynamics modelling in literature within the framework established by Forrester. Two aspects of the model, motivation and evidence revelation, are then examined against evidence from the text, supported by historical information. Some difficulties inherent in modelling drama are highlighted and the paper concludes that the model does not adequately capture the complexity of the play because System Dynamics modelling is not an appropriate tool for literary analysis.
Accuracy of digital light processing printing of 3-dimensional dental models

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to investigate whether a digital light processing (DLP) printer could perform efficiently and with adequate accuracy for clinical applications when used with different settings and variations in the orientation of models on the build plate. Methods: Digital impressions of the oral environment were collected from 15 patients. Subsequently, digital impressions were used to make 3-dimensional printed models using the DLP printing technique. Three variables of the printing technique were tested: placement on the build plate (middle vs corner), thickness in the z-axis (50 microns vs 100 microns), and hollow vs solid shell. After being printed with different printing techniques and orientations on the same printer, a total of 240 maxillary and mandibular arches were measured. These variables generated 8 printing combinations. Tooth and arch measurements on each model type were compared with each other. Intraobserver reliability of the repeated measurement error was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: All mean differences among the printing variations were statistically insignificant. The Bland-Altman plots verified a high degree of agreement among all model sets and printing variations. In addition, the measurements were highly reproducible; this was demonstrated by the high intraclass correlation coefficient for all measurements recorded. Conclusions: The DLP printer produced clinically acceptable models in all areas of the build plate, with hollow and solid model shells, and at its high-speed setting of 100 microns. The applications of the DLP printer tested should be a viable option for printing in a clinical environment at a high-speed setting while filling the build plate and printing with less resin.
Surface roughness and marginal adaptation of stereolithography versus digital light processing three-dimensional printed resins: An in-vitro study

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to assess surface roughness and marginal adaptation of Stereolithographic versus Digital Light Processed three-dimensional (3D) printed provisional resins. Materials and methods: A 3-unit fixed partial denture (FPD) preparation was done on ideal model irrespective to 44-46. The Model was scanned and a 3-unit FPD was designed using 3-shape software. The STL file was transferred to two different 3D printers - Sprintray digital light processing (DLP) and Formlabs stereolithography (SLA). Eight samples were printed per group (total of 16 samples) using C and B temporary tooth-colored resin and cured according to the manufacturer's instructions. Marginal adaptation was checked for six surfaces per tooth for all the samples using a stereomicroscope. Surface roughness was also calculated for four samples from each group before and after polishing (pumice slurry + rouge and cotton buff) using a contact profilometer. Results: The mean maximum marginal gap overall, was seen for the DLP group on the mesiobuccal surface of the first premolar, i.e., 178.8 ± 8.35 μm, while the minimal marginal gap was seen for the SLA group on the mesiolingual surface of first molar - 32.5 ± 7.07 μm. Furthermore, all the DLP samples showed a statistically significant higher mean marginal gap as compared to SLA samples (P < 0.005). All the samples showed surface roughness within the acceptable range. There was a statistically significant difference noted in Rz (roughness depth) before and after polishing (P < 0.05). Conclusion: 3D printed temporary resin FPD via SLA showed a much better marginal adaptation (49.6 μm mean marginal gap for 46 and 106.8 μm for 44) as compared to those printed via DLP (101.8 μm mean marginal gap for 46 and 157.5 μm for 44). All the samples showed an acceptable surface roughness. Clinical relevance: 3D printed temporaries have shown good marginal fit and adaptation and are a viable choice in patients where temporaries has to be given for long term before a final prosthesis can be fabricated (especially for full mouth rehabilitations).

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the fitness of bilateral free-end dentition defect removable partial denture framework fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) technique with different support angles. Methods: After the control group has been set to eliminate the system error, and according to the standard model of bilateral mandibular posterior teeth loss, eighteen titanium alloy removable partial denture frameworks fabricated by SLM technology were divided into 3 groups with support angles of 0° (horizontal group), 45°(45° group) and 90° (vertical group). Plaster cast with duplicated structure of tissue surface of the removable partial denture (RPD) framework was obtained. A three-dimensional scanner was used to scan original and duplicated plaster casts. The gaps between framework and the model in different parts were analyzed using Geomagic Qualify software to evaluate the fitness of the framework with visual method. Results: The framework fits on the plaster model completely, and its tissue surface fitted on the plaster model well. The deviation between frameworks and plaster casts was calculated as follow: the total deviations of the horizontal, 45°, and vertical group were (0.146±0.017), (0.182±0.015) and (0.185±0.022) mm respectively. The mean deviation of the horizontal group was significantly less than those of the 45° group and the vertical group (P<0.05). Moreover, there was no significant difference in the total deviation between the 45° group and the vertical group. The total deviation of occlusal rest of the horizontal group was significantly less than that of the 45° group (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was detected in the deviation of occlusal rest among the vertical group, the horizontal group, and the 45° group (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the deviation of occlusal rest among the vertical group, the horizontal group, and the 45° group. The deviation of clasp of the horizontal group was significantly smaller than those of the 45° group and the vertical group (P<0.05). Whereas, there was no significant difference in the deviation of clasp between the 45° group and the 90° group (P>0.05). No significant difference was found in the deviation of lingual bar among the three groups (P>0.05). Conclusions: Among the three kinds of bilateral free-end dentition defect RPD framework fabricated by SLM in different support angles, horizontal printing was proved to reach the minimal deviation, even though the fitness of all three kinds of frameworks can fullfil clinical requirements according to previous studies.
