Abstract:A heterogeneous polymerization model, including an initial solution polymerization model and a later two-phase polymerization model, is developed to describe graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of poly(propylene glycol). The diffusion-controlled termination, initiation, propagation, and transfer in the dispersed phase are considered reasonably. The model describes the polymeriztion kinetics well. The main polymerization locus shifts from the continuous phase into the dispersed phase at monomer conversion of approximate to 0.030.05, leading to sharp increase in polymerization rate and molecular weight, decrease in graft efficiency and broadening of the MWD.

Abstract:An existing kinetic model for graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of poly(propylene glycol) is extended to describe the semi-batch process and to simulate the continuous process. A good predictive ability of the model for the semi-batch process is demonstrated by comparing with experimental data, except for $\overline {M} _{{\rm w}} $ and polydispersity index at St/AN?=?60/40?wt% in the feed. The continuous process is simulated under various reaction conditions. The solid content increases sharply with increasing monomer concentration. With decreasing St/AN weight ratio, the graft efficieny increases sharply and $\overline {M} _{{\rm w}} $ decreases.

Abstract:Thermally‐initiated living radical graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) with ozone‐pretreated poly[N,N′‐(1,4‐phenylene)‐3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetra‐carboxylic amic acid] (PAmA) via a reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT)‐mediated process was carried out. The chemical compositions and structures of the copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and molecular weight measurements. The “living” character of the grafted PEGMA side chains was ascertained in the subsequent extension of the PEGMA side chains. Nanoporous low‐dielectric‐constant (low‐κ) polyimide (PI) films were prepared by thermal imidization of the PAmA graft copolymers under reduced argon pressure, followed by thermal decomposition of the side chains in air. The nanoporous PI films obtained from the RAFT‐mediated graft copolymers had well‐preserved PI backbones, porosity in the range of 5–17 %, and pore size in the range of 30–50 nm. The pores were smaller and the pore‐size distribution more uniform than those of the corresponding nanoporous PI films obtained via graft copolymers from conventional free‐radical processes. Dielectric constants approaching 2 were obtained for the nanoporous PI films prepared from the RAFT‐mediated graft copolymers.

Abstract:The ultimate objective of hybrid miniemulsion polymerization is to produce a water-based crosslinkable coating through in situ grafting of a free radical growing acrylic polymer with an unsaturated resin. Certain authors have reported low grafting while others have reported higher. This article explores the factors that influence the grafting tendencies of these systems. Methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) have a sterically hindered radical center that lowers its reactivity toward unsaturated resin. This steric hindrance from the methyl group forces grafting of this type of monomer to occur by abstraction of a hydrogen allylic to a resinous double bond. This chain transfer produces a relatively inactive radical on the resin that reduces the grafting efficiency. The transfer process also inherently produces some degree of terminated PMMA polymer within the particle. Grafting occurs in this type of system through termination of living PMMA chains with that radical produced on the resin. For relatively water-soluble monomers such as MMA, grafting efficiency is further lessened by homogeneous nucleation resulting from the monomer hydrophilicity. These newly created particles cannot contain alkyd due to its hydrophobicity and thus inability to transport across the aqueous phase, and hence cannot produce grafted polymer. Nonetheless, degree of grafting of nearly 50% was observed in these systems. For hybrid systems involving an acrylate monomer such as butyl acrylate (BA), virtually complete grafting with alkyd was observed. This is due to the uninhibited BA radical center allowing the molecule to add directly through a resin double bond. This process offers the possibility for complete grafting. Homogeneous nucleation is not involved in this system due to the insolubility of BA in the aqueous phase. Abstract:It was found that without additional photoinitiator, methyl methacrylate (MMA) dissolved in common solvent N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) could be photografted steadily on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film surface under UV irradiation. In short irradiation time (4 min) and at room temperature, high grafting efficiency (approaching 100%) and remarkable graft polymer amount (grafting percent is about 4.6%) was obtained. The possible reaction mechanism was based on the photosensitivity of DMF, which induced this photografting polymerization. This finding is useful to develop photoinitiator-free grafting or photopolymerization system. Using SEM, special discrete globular structure was found on the MMA-grafted LDPE film surface, and a possible model was proposed to interpret it.

Abstract:Simultaneous photopolymerization of radical and cationic systems is one strategy to generate polymer network architectures named interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs). In these hybrid systems, phase separation and final polymer morphology are ultimately governed by thermodynamic incompatibility and polymerization kinetics. This behavior is quite complex, as numerous factors can affect polymerization kinetics including monomer/oligomer viscosity and structure, light intensity, photoinitiator content and absorbance, cross-linking, vitrification, etc. In this work, the impact of photoinitiator concentration and monomer fraction on surface morphologies in a hybrid radical/cationic phase-separated system was examined. Wrinkles formed on the surface of photopolymerized films depend on the polymerization rate and acrylate/epoxy ratio. This phenomenon is partially explained by the rapid polymerization rate associated with the development of an epoxy matrix and a smaller acrylate domain. The size and shape of the wrinkles can be controlled by varying formulation parameters (mainly, composition) and photoinitiator content. It was possible to create surface roughness and consequently decrease the gloss by controlling the polymerization kinetics and phase-separated morphology. Fluorinated acrylate-grafted LDPE films from UV-induced photograft polymerization

Abstract:One kind of fluorinated acrylate monomer, R5610, was grafted onto the surface of LDPE films by UV-induced photograft polymerization. The existence of a fluorinated polymer layer and its linkage with the LDPE substrate through chemical bonds were confirmed by FTIR, ESCA, SEM and DSC measurements on the butanone-extracted grafted films. It's found that a moderate increase of the UV intensity, concentration of both photoinitiator and monomer, and reaction temperature favored the improvement of grafting yield. The overall activation energy for the photograft polymerization reaction of R-5610 on LDPE was calculated to be 54.2 kJ/mol. The surface contact angles of the grafted films were found to increase with the improvement of grafting yield before they became constant, which implied that there could be a boundary layer that influenced the interaction between the LDPE substrate and the probe water drops during the measurement of contact angles. The LDPE substrate interacted with the probe water drop through the boundary when grafting yield of the grafted film was low and the grafted polymer layer was thinner than the critical boundary thickness, which resulted in the similarity between contact angles of LDPE and grafted film. As grafting yield increased, the grafted polymer layer became thicker and the interaction between LDPE substrate and probe water drop was weakened, so the influence of fluorinated polymer on the contact angle became more remarkable and caused the increase of contact angle. When grafting yield went further higher and the thickness of grafted polymer layer exceeded the critical boundary thickness, the interaction between LDPE substrate and probe water drops disappeared, and the contact angle became stabilized thereafter as a result of fluorinated polymer becoming the only one to influence contact angle of grafted films.

Abstract:In this paper, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was been successfully grafted on polypropylene (PP) films by pre-dipping photografting and dormant radical photografting techniques. It was found that higher grafting yield was achieved by the dormant radical photografting method. An optimum concentration of N-isopropylacrylamide monomer existed both for the pre-dipping photografting and for the dormant radical photografting methods. The grafting yield was improved by increasing the UV irradiation time for both methods. Water absorbency of grafted PP films prepared by the two methods was similar and increased nearly linearly with the improvement Of grafting yield, At constant temperature and humanidity, the grafted PP films lost the absorbed water continually before the water absorbency reached an equilibrium value at this temperature. Abstract:A dynamic model predicts shrinkage and swelling during photopolymerization of 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) with bis‐acylphosphine oxide (BAPO) under oxygen. The model, involving 14 PDEs, predicts film thickness and concentration profiles. Shrinkage causes ≈9% discrepancies in vinyl‐group conversion compared to a previous model. Accurate kinetic parameters will be needed for future process improvement studies. A dynamic model is proposed to account for shrinkage and swelling during the photopolymerization of 1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) with the bifunctional initiator bis‐acylphosphine oxide (BAPO) in the presence of oxygen. The model is composed of 14 partial differential equations (PDEs) that are used to track changes in film thickness along with time‐ and spatially‐varying concentrations of monomer, initiator, oxygen, pendant vinyl groups, and seven types of radicals. Shrinkage has a noticeable influence on the model predictions. For a variety of simulated photopolymerization experiments, there is ≈9% discrepancy between predicted overall vinyl‐group conversions obtained from the current model with shrinkage and a previous model without. Prediction discrepancies become larger for simulated experiments involving thin films (8 μm) or low light intensities (1200 W m−2). In the future, it will be important to re‐estimate the kinetic parameters used in the shrinkage model to obtain accurate model predictions for use in process improvement studies.

Abstract:Photopolymerization reactions exhibit distinctive advantages over traditional, thermally initiated polymerization, such as better temporal controls, faster kinetics, and solvent-free conditions. However, most photopolymerizations employ a combination of photochemically labile molecules as sensitizers and initiators, which are inevitably covalently incorporated into the polymer products as end groups, with unknown influences on the mechanical, biological, and environmental properties. Therefore, it is desirable to produce compositionally “pure” polymers with one single repeating unit. Here, we demonstrate that a commercially available monomer N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) can be used to produce polyDMA (PDMA) homopolymers without heterogeneous end groups, which can be regulated by a cheap and commonly seen naphthalimide: the polymerization of DMA yields PDMA with high molecular weight, and nearly 100% monomer conversion could be achieved within 2 min under a UV light-emitting diode (λ = 365 nm), but was instantly terminated in the dark. To understand the mechanism of such dramatic light/dark switching behaviors of the system, we propose a plausible catalytic cycle that is supported by theoretical calculations and experiments: using a nonpolymerizable aliphatic amine as a model compound, we infer that DMA and naphthalimide may form a “UV-activated complex”, captured by high-resolution mass spectrometry, before it dissociates into an unstable DMA radical cation to initiate the polymerization and a stable NCP radical anion, which can be analyzed with NMR and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopically under argon at room temperature.

Abstract:Colloidal crystals have gathered wide attention as a model material for optical applications because of their feasibility in controlling the propagation of light by their crystal structure and lattice spacing as well as the simplicity of their fabrication. However, due to the simple interaction between colloids, the colloidal crystal structures that can be formed are limited. It is also difficult to adjust the lattice spacing. Furthermore, colloidal crystals are fragile compared to other crystals. In this study, we focused on polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNP) as a possible solution to these unresolved issues. we expected that PGNPs, composed of two distinct layers (the hard core of a nanoparticle and the soft corona of grafted polymers on the surface), will demonstrate similar behaviors as star polymers and hard spheres. We also predicted that PGNPs may exhibit polymorphism because the interaction between PGNPs strongly depends upon their grafting density and the length of the grafted polymer chains. Moreover, we expected that crystals made from PGNPs will be structurally tough due to the entanglement of grafted polymers. From exploration of crystal polymorphs of PGNPs by molecular dynamics simulations, we found face-centered cubic (FCC)/hexagonal close-packed (HCP) and body-centered cubic (BCC) crystals, depending on the length of the grafted polymer chains. When the chains were short, PGNPs behaved like hard spheres and crystals were arranged in FCC/HCP structure, much like the phase transition observed in an Alder transition. When the chains were long enough, the increase in the free energy of grafted polymers was no longer negligible and crystals were arranged in BCC structure, which has a lower density than FCC/HCP. When the chains were not too short or long, FCC/HCP structures were first observed when the volume fraction of system was small, but a phase transition occurred when the system was further compressed and the crystals arranged themselves in a BCC structure. These results most likely have laid strong foundations for future simulations and experimental studies of PGNP crystals.

Abstract:An important issue in developing applications for photopolymers in holography is the effect of shrinkage on recording properties. In this paper, we introduce a model to describe real-time formation of a single grating in photopolymers at any geometrical angle, under the assumption that the shrinkage is in proportion to the polymerization. This model combines polymerization kinetics with the coupled-wave theory, explaining the shrinkage effect on the diffraction efficiency. The model is validated by comparing its predictions with the experimental results for a film of 99mum thickness.

Abstract:While the phase separation of binary mixtures of chemically different polymer-grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs) is observed to superficially resemble conventional polymer blends, the presence of a "soft" polymer-grafted layer on the inorganic core of these nanoparticles qualitatively alters the phase separation kinetics of these "nanoblends" from the typical pattern of behavior seen in polymer blends and other simple fluids. We investigate this system using a direct immersion annealing method (DIA) that allows for a facile tuning of the PGNPs phase boundary, phase separation kinetics, and the ultimate scale of phase separation after a sufficient "aging" time. In particular, by switching the DIA solvent composition from a selective one (which increases the interaction parameter according to Timmerman's rule) to an overall good solvent for both PGNP components, we can achieve rapid switchability between phase-separated and homogeneous states. Despite a relatively low and non-classical power-law coarsening exponent, the overall phase separation process is completed on a time scale on the order of a few minutes. Moreover, the roughness of the PGNP blend film saturates at a scale that is proportional to the in-plane phase separation pattern scale, as observed in previous blend and block copolymer film studies. The relatively low magnitude of the coarsening exponent n is attributed to a suppression of hydrodynamic interactions between the PGNPs. Abstract:On the basis of the previous work, another experiments were carried out to investigate the photografting polymerization of maleic anhydride (MAH)/ n-butyl vinyl ether (n-BVE) more intensively, from which some particular characteristics related to the mechanism were found out. The activation energy of the overall polymerization (Eap) is about 5.9 kJ mol-1, while the value of the photografting polymerization (Eag) is around 29.3 kJ mol-1, which indicates that high reaction temperature would reduce the homopolymerization and accordingly favors the graft polymerization. MAH, as a monomer, could act as a photoinitiator as well, which was deduced from the unexpected phenomenon that the photografting polymerization could perform smoothly even in the absence of photoinitiator. More experiments confirmed that the grafting efficiency reached the highest when the molar ratio of MAH to BVE was 1 : 1, from which it can be concluded that the formation of charge transfer complex (CTC) between MAH and BVE is a crucial factor leading to the high grafting efficiency. The formation of CTC was measured by UV spectra and the equilibrium constant of CTC was determined by 1H NMR method. As a result, the photografting process of the binary monomers MAH/BVE was outlined.

Abstract:Summary Grafting polymerization of acrylonitrile onto low density polyethylene film was studied further following the earlier work [1]. A novel and effective method was developed to directly determine the number of end-groups, i.e. phenyls at the end of grafted chains with UV-vis spectroscopy; according to the number of phenyl end-groups and the weight of grafted polymers, grafting chain length and density were estimated; investigations indicated both of these two parameters could be practically controlled.
Self‐initiating Performance of Maleic Anhydride on Surface Photografting Polymerization

Abstract:Maleic anhydride (MAH) was photografted onto low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films with a grafting efficiency of about 70% in the absence of a photoinitiator. The self-initiating performance was attributed to a mechanism of abstracting hydrogen atoms from LDPE chains by excited MAH dimers. The supporting experimental results were as follows: (1) the far-UV radiation (200-300 nm) was indispensable for the graft polymerization and 2) the crosslinking reaction of LDPE inevitably accompanied the grafting of MAH. In addition, the initiation performance of MAH was further confirmed by surface photografting of acrylic acid in the presence of MAH, where MAH was used as the photoinitiator. Abstract:Via the process of photografting surface modification by UV light,fluorenone (FL) was employed as an initiator in the grafting reaction of acrylic acid (AA), acryamide (AM), methylacrylic acid (MAA), methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto the surface of LDPE films for introducing new chemical properties to the film surface. In this study, influences of the initiator concentration, UV light irradiation time, UV light irradiation intensity as well as the types of functional monomers on the grafting yield of LDPE films were investigated respectively. Within a certain range, the results showed that raising the fluorenone concentration would lead to the increasing of the grafting yield, however, when the fluorenone concentration reached 5%, the grafting yield decreased. The grafting polymerization was fully promoted by increasing the light irradiation intensity up to 100 W/m(2) and prolonging the UV light irradiation time to 4 min. Grafting ability of different types of monomers on LDPE films was concerned with parameters such as activity of monomers, compatibility of monomers with the matrix and so on. After successful grafting of functional monomers, the changes of water contact angle of the grafted LDPE film were related to the grafting yield of monomer on the film as well as the hydrophilicity of the applied monomers.

Abstract:A sequential two-step method was successfully used for the photografting of methyl methacrylate/1,2divinylbenzene (MMA/DVB) microemulsion onto the surface of a poly(propylene) (PP) film. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images showed that nanoparticles with a cross-section diameter of 60 nm were directly grafted onto the substrate's surface. Environment scanning electron microscope (ESEM) images proved that the particles formed just a single layer on the surface. The dormant groups on the nanoparticles' surface were a potential factor in the evolution of single layer into multilayer nanoparticles.

Abstract:An important step of the great achievement of organic solar cells in power conversion efficiency is the development of low-band gap polymer donors, PBDB−T derivatives, which present interesting aggregation effects dominating the device performance. The aggregation of polymers can be manipulated by a series of variables from a materials design and processing conditions perspective; however, optimization of film quality is a time- and energy-consuming work. Here, we introduce a robot-based high-throughput platform (HTP) that is offering automated film preparation and optical spectroscopy thin-film characterization in combination with an analysis algorithm. PM6 films are prepared by the so-called spontaneous film spreading (SFS) process, where a polymer solution is coated on a water surface. Automated acquisition of UV/Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra and automated extraction of morphological features is coupled to Gaussian Process Regression to exploit available experimental evidence for morphology optimization but also for hypothesis formulation and testing with respect to the underlying physical principles. The integrated spectral modeling workflow yields quantitative microstructure information by distinguishing amorphous from ordered phases and assesses the extension of amorphous versus the ordered domains. This research provides an easy to use methodology to analyze the exciton coherence length in conjugated semiconductors and will allow to optimize exciton splitting in thin film organic semiconductor layers as a function of processing.
