Abstract:The particle growth in the graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene (St) and acrylonitrile (AN) in the presence of poly(propylene glycol) is investigated by experiments and modeling. The concentrations of chain transfer agent and macromer, and the St/AN ratio play important roles in particle size and its distribution. A particle size model is developed and an analytic expression for the particle size in terms of monomer mass concentration (W-mt0), initiator molar concentration ([I](0)), and macromer mass concentration (W-M0) is derived. The particle size is described experimentally as: W-mt0(0.58) W-M0(-0.65) {I}(0)(-0.06). Particle growth processes under various experimental conditions are well described by the model.

Abstract:A heterogeneous polymerization model, including an initial solution polymerization model and a later two-phase polymerization model, is developed to describe graft free-radical copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of poly(propylene glycol). The diffusion-controlled termination, initiation, propagation, and transfer in the dispersed phase are considered reasonably. The model describes the polymeriztion kinetics well. The main polymerization locus shifts from the continuous phase into the dispersed phase at monomer conversion of approximate to 0.030.05, leading to sharp increase in polymerization rate and molecular weight, decrease in graft efficiency and broadening of the MWD.
Grafting Mechanisms in Hybrid Miniemulsion Polymerization

Abstract:The ultimate objective of hybrid miniemulsion polymerization is to produce a water-based crosslinkable coating through in situ grafting of a free radical growing acrylic polymer with an unsaturated resin. Certain authors have reported low grafting while others have reported higher. This article explores the factors that influence the grafting tendencies of these systems. Methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) have a sterically hindered radical center that lowers its reactivity toward unsaturated resin. This steric hindrance from the methyl group forces grafting of this type of monomer to occur by abstraction of a hydrogen allylic to a resinous double bond. This chain transfer produces a relatively inactive radical on the resin that reduces the grafting efficiency. The transfer process also inherently produces some degree of terminated PMMA polymer within the particle. Grafting occurs in this type of system through termination of living PMMA chains with that radical produced on the resin. For relatively water-soluble monomers such as MMA, grafting efficiency is further lessened by homogeneous nucleation resulting from the monomer hydrophilicity. These newly created particles cannot contain alkyd due to its hydrophobicity and thus inability to transport across the aqueous phase, and hence cannot produce grafted polymer. Nonetheless, degree of grafting of nearly 50% was observed in these systems. For hybrid systems involving an acrylate monomer such as butyl acrylate (BA), virtually complete grafting with alkyd was observed. This is due to the uninhibited BA radical center allowing the molecule to add directly through a resin double bond. This process offers the possibility for complete grafting. Homogeneous nucleation is not involved in this system due to the insolubility of BA in the aqueous phase. Directed Self-Assembly of Ternary Blends of Block Copolymer and Homopolymers on Chemical Patterns

Abstract:In this work ternary blends of symmetric lamellae-forming poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) block copolymer and polystyrene and PMMA homopolymers were prepared for the directed self-assembly (DSA) on chemically nanopatterned substrates using 2x density multiplication. Homopolymers with comparable molecular weights to that of the corresponding blocks in the block copolymer were used to adjust the periods of the blends. The periods of the blends increased from 38.5 to 50 nm as the volume fraction of homopolymers increased from 0 to 30%. The periods were analyzed by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, direct measurement from and fast Fourier transform of scanning electron microscopy images. DSA results indicate that the perfection and registration of the assembled films were mainly determined by the commensurability between the periods of the blends and the chemical patterns. Patterns with relatively small w/L-S (guiding stripe width/period of chemical pattern) led to mixed structures of dots and parallel structures. The process window of L-S where the block copolymer alignment shows a high degree of perfection was estimated at +/- 3.6% to +/- 4.6% L-o. (C) 2013 American Vacuum Society.
Preparation of Starch-Graft-poly(methyl Methacrylate) Via SET-LRP at Molecular Level and Its Self-Assembly

Abstract:A series of starch-graft-poly (methyl methacrylate) (S-g-PMMA) copolymers were prepared by single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) at molecular level under mild conditions. The successful grafting polymerization was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The hydrolysate of S-g-PMMA via acid-catalyzed hydrolysis proved to be a mixture of 1-arm, 2-arm and 3-arm polymers by MALDI-TOF measurements. Furthermore, the micelles formed by S-g-PMMA copolymers in water were studied at various conditions by SEM, TEM and DLS measurements. The results indicate that the sizes of micelles decreased following the order of the common solvents of 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, acetone and acetonitrile, and also increased with the increase of initial copolymer concentrations, addition rate of water and length of grafted chains.
PHEA- g -PMMA Well-Defined Graft Copolymer: ATRP Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Synchronous Encapsulation of Both Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Guest Molecules

Abstract:A series of well-defined amphiphilic graft copolymer bearing a hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) backbone and hydrophobic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) side chains was synthesized by successive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) through the grafting-from strategy. A well-defined PHEA-based backbone with Cl-containing ATRP initiating group in every repeated unit ( M w / M n = 1.08), poly(2-hydroxyethyl 2-((2-chloropropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate) (PHECPMA), was first prepared by RAFT homopolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl 2-((2-chloropropanoyloxy)methyl)acrylate (HECPMA), a Cl-containing trifunctional acrylate. ATRP of methyl methacrylate was subsequently initiated by PHECPMA homopolymer to afford the target well-defined poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate)- graft -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PHEA- g -PMMA) graft copolymers ( M w / M n ≤ 1.36) with 34 PMMA side chains and 34 pendant hydroxyls in PHEA backbone using CuCl/dHbpy as catalytic system. The critical micelle concentration ( cmc ) of the obtained graft copolymer was determined by fluorescence spectroscopy using N -phenyl-1-naphthylamine as probe while micellar morphologies in aqueous media were visualized by transmission electron microscopy. Interestingly, PHEA- g -PMMA graft copolymer could self-assemble into large compound micelles rather than common spherical micelles, which can encapsulate hydrophilic rhodamine 6 G and hydrophobic pyrene separately or simultaneously.

Abstract:Amphiphilic graft polyphosphazenes (EtTrp/PNIPAni-PPP) with different mole ratios of hydrophobic groups to hydrophilic segments were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization and Subsequent substitution reactions. The self-assembly behavior of these graft copolymers was studied in detail by TEM, SEM, CLSM, and AFM. Depending on the copolymer composition and common organic solvent employed in dialysis process, supramolecular aggregates ranging from network, nanospheres, high-genus particles to macrophage-like aggregates were produced with graft copolymers.

Abstract:The amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)-graft-(poly(acrylic acid)/polystyrene) (P(MMA-co-BIEM)-g-(PAA/PS)) were synthesized successfully by the combination of single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP), single electron transfer-nitroxide radical coupling (SET-NRC), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) via the “grafting from” approach. First, the linear polymer backbones poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA-co-BIEM)) were prepared by ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and subsequent esterification of the hydroxyl groups of the HEMA units with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then the graft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)-graft-poly(t-butyl acrylate) (P(MMA-co-BIEM)-g-PtBA) were prepared by SET-LRP of t-butyl acrylate (tBA) at room temperature in the presence of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yloxyl (TEMPO), where the capping efficiency of TEMPO was so high that nearly every TEMPO trapped one polymer radicals formed by SET. Finally, the formed alkoxyamines via SET-NRC in the main chain were used to initiate NMP of styrene and following selectively cleavage of t-butyl esters of the PtBA side chains afforded the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)-graft-(poly(t-butyl acrylate)/polystyrene) (P(MMA-co–BIEM)-g-(PtBA/PS)). The self-assembly behaviors of the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers P(MMA-co–BIEM)-g-(PAA/PS) in aqueous solution were investigated by AFM and DLS, and the results demonstrated that the morphologies of the formed micelles were dependent on the grafting density. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In-Situ Heterogenous Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylateonto Nanometer Calcium Carbonate Particles

Abstract:4,4'-azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACPA) initiator chelated onto the surface of nanometer calcium carbonate was used to initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate in water. The kinetics of polymerization and grafting of PMMA on the surface of nano-CaCO 3 were investigated. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that the decomposition temperature of ACPA decreased when it was chelated onto the particles. The polymerization rate of methyl methacrylate (MMA) decreased when CaCO 3 particles was added, while it increased as the initiator concentration and polymerization temperature increased. The grafting efficiency of PMMA decreased as the conversion increased. The agglomerates of nanometer calcium carbonate particles were separated into small ones during polymerizing process and the size of aggregates covered with poly(methyl methacrylate) decreased as polymerization proceeded.
Synthesis of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate)-Graft-Polystyrene by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:The radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate was carried out via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated by ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate and catalyzed by CuBr/2;2'-bipyridine complex. This polymerization proceeds in a living fashion with controlled molecular weight and low polydispersity. The obtained copolymer was esterified with 2-bromoisobutylryl bromide yielding a macroinitiator, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate), and its structure was characterized by H-1-NMR. This macroinitiator was used for ATRP of styrene to synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate)-graft-polystyrene. The molecular weight of graft copolymer increased with the monomer conversion, and the polydispersity remained relatively low. The individual grafted polystyrene chains were cleaved from the macroinitiator backbone by hydrolysis and the hydrolyzed product was characterized by H-1-NMR and GPC.
Self-Assembly of Molecular Brushes with Polyimide Backbone and Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Side Chains in Selective Solvents

Abstract:Three-component molecular brushes with a polyimide backbone and amphiphilic block copolymer side chains with different contents of the “inner” hydrophilic (poly(methacrylic acid)) and “outer” hydrophobic (poly(methyl methacrylate)) blocks were synthesized and characterized by molecular hydrodynamics and optics methods in solutions of chloroform, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran and ethanol. The peculiarity of the studied polymers is the amphiphilic structure of the grafted chains. The molar masses of the molecular brushes were determined by static and dynamic light scattering in chloroform in which polymers form molecularly disperse solutions. Spontaneous self-assembly of macromolecules was detected in dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran and ethanol. The aggregates size depended on the thermodynamic quality of the solvent as well as on the macromolecular architectural parameters. In dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran, the distribution of hydrodynamic radii of aggregates was bimodal, while in ethanol, it was unimodal. Moreover, in ethanol, an increase in the poly(methyl methacrylate) content caused a decrease in the hydrodynamic radius of aggregates. A significant difference in the nature of the blocks included in the brushes determines the selectivity of the used solvents, since their thermodynamic quality with respect to the blocks is different. The macromolecules of the studied graft copolymers tend to self-organization in selective solvents with formation of a core–shell structure with an insoluble solvophobic core surrounded by the solvophilic shell of side chains.

Atrp Synthesis and Self-Assembly Behavior of Chitosan-O-Pmpegma

Abstract:The bromized sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-chitosan (CS) complex (Br-SCC) was synthesized by conjugating 2-bromo-2-methyl propionic acid to the hydroxyl groups of SCC which was used as an organo-soluble precursor in this study. Br-SCC was used as a macromolecular ATRP initiator to polymerize methyl ether poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PMPEGMA) using copper (I) bromide/bipyridine as a catalyst, yielding SCC-O-PMPEGMA. SDS was removed from the product by precipitating SCC-O-PMPEGMA solution into aqueous tris(hydroxymethyl) amine (Tris) medium. The chemical structure of the intermediate and CS-O-PMPEGMA was studied by FTIR and H-1-NMR. The substitution degree of bromobutyric acid could be modulated by bromobutyric acid/SCC feed ratio. The degree of polymerization of PMPEGMA could be controlled by varying the PMPEGMA/Br-SCC ratio. Complexation behaviors between CS-O-PMPEGMA and heparin were studied by dynamic light scattering, zeta potential analyzer and TEM. With the increase of heparin/CS molar ratio (X), there was an increase in the nanoparticle size and decrease in the zeta potential of the particles. When X was above 2, the size and the zeta potential reached a plateau stage. The ultimate size of the spherical nanoparticles was about 44 nm and the zeta potential was -8.9 mV. CS-O-PMPEGMA which could be conveniently synthesized according to the scheme proposed in this study has well-defined chemical structure. The grafting of PMPEGMA has no effect on the cationic density of the final product. In addition, the copolymers could form spherical micelles with anionic agents. The above characteristics of CS-O-PMPEGMA make it promising for tumor targeting and gene delivery.
Study of Amphiphilic Poly(1-Dodecene-Co-Para-Methylstyrene)-Graft-Poly(Ethylene Glycol). Part Ii: Preparation and Micellization Behavior of the Amphiphilic Copolymers

Abstract:Poly(1-dodecene-co-pMS) copolymers were brominated by HBr/H2O2 system with high selectivity at the methyl groups of pMS units. It was found that longer reaction time, higher pMS content, and lower molecular weight of the copolymers were helpful for higher degree of bromination. Through a modified Williamson ether synthesis, poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ethers (PEG) were grafted onto the brominated copolymers, and the amphiphilic poly(1-dodecene-co-pMS)-graft-PEG copolymers which can be readily dissolved in n-octane were successfully synthesized. Due to their amphiphilic characteristics, they can self-assemble spontaneously into reverse micelles in n-octane. Their micellization behaviors were investigated by fluorescence probe technique, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The critical micelle concentrations of the three copolymers in n-octane were determined at about 1.26×10−4, 1.58×10−4, and 1.95×10−4gml−1 by fluorescence measurements. The morphologies of micelles were preliminarily explored by TEM and were found to be spheres.

Abstract:Here, the dendritic chloric poly(benzyl ether) (G1-Cl, G2-Cl and G3-Cl) as the macroinitiator for the controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methylacrylate was investigated. Polymers obtained were characterizated by GPC, 1H NMR, FT-IR, TGA and DSC. These dendritic-linear block polymers that consist of linear and dendritic segments have very good solubility in common organic solvents at room temperature. In a selective solvent (THF/H2O), polymers can self-assembled into the micelles that have a spherical morphology in shape due to the lowest of the surface energies.

Abstract:A series of well-defined amphiphilic graft copolymers consisting of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) backbone and hydrophobic poly(propylene oxide) side chains were synthesized by sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer nitroxide radical coupling (ATNRC) chemistry followed by selective hydrolysis of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) backbone. A new Br-containing acrylate monomer, tert-butyl 2-((2-bromopropanoyloxy)methyl) acrylate, was first prepared, and it call be polymerized via RAFT in a controlled way to obtain a well-defined homopolymer with narrow molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n = 1.06). Grafting-onto strategy was employed to synthesize PtBA-g-PPO well-defined graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-n = 1.05-1.23) via ATNRC reaction between Br-containing PtBA-based backbone and poly(propylene oxide) with 2,2,6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) end group using CuBr/PMDETA or Cu/PMDETA as catalytic system, The final PAA-g-PPO amphiphilic graft copolymers were obtained by the selective acidic hydrolysis of PtBA backbone in acidic environment without affecting the side chains. The critical micelle concentrations in aqueous media were determined by a fluorescence probe technique. Diverse micellar morphologies were formed with varying the content of hydrophobic PPO segment.

Abstract:A novel dualfunctional monomer, 2-(2′,2′,6′,6′-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1′-oxy)methylbenzene-1,4-dioyl chloride hydrochloride, with two acid chloride groups for step-growth polymerization and a nitroxide group for the mediation of living radical polymerization was synthesized. It was first copolymerized with terephthaloyl chloride and p-phenylenediamine at a feed molar ratio of 1:3:4 in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone containing 10 wt% calcium chloride at −10°C to yield a poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) based macroinitiator, which initiated radical polymerization of styrene at 125°C to obtain a series of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)-g-polystyrenes. A combinatory analysis of proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elementary analysis, thermogravimetry and gel permeation chromatography indicated that the macroinitiator induced the radical polymerization of styrene to proceed in a well-controlled way. The molecular weight of side-chains increased with an increase of monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution index remained lower than 1.5. The graft copolymers showed a remarkably improved solubility in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and much depressed crystallinity in bulk.
Synthesis of Well-Defined Pnipam-B-(Pea-G-P2vp) Double Hydrophilic Graft Copolymer Via Sequential Set-Lrp and Atrp and Its "schizophrenic" Micellization Behavior in Aqueous Media

Abstract:A series of well-defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers, consisting of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly-(ethyl acrylate) backbone and poly(2-vinylpyridine) side chains, were synthesized by successive single-electron-transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was prepared by sequential SET-LRP of N-isopropylacrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate at 25 degrees C using CuCl/tris(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as the catalytic system. The obtained diblock copolymer was transformed into the macroinitiator by reacting with 2-chloropropionyl chloride. Next, grafting-from strategy was used for the synthesis of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-[poly(ethyl acrylate)-g-poly (2-vinylpyridine)] double hydrophilic graft copolymer. ATRP of 2-vinylpyridine was initiated by the macroinitiator at 25 degrees C using CuCl/hexamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system. The synthesis of both the backbone and the side chains are controllable. Thermo- and pH-responsive schizophrenic micellization behaviors were investigated by H-1 NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Unimolecular micelles with PNIPAM-core formed in acidic environment (pH = 2) with elevated temperature (T >= 32 degrees C), whereas the aggregates turned into spheres with PEA-g-P2VP-core accompanied with the lifting of pH values (pH >= 5.3) at room temperature. Abstract:A series of water-soluble comb-shaped graft copolymers, poly(acrylic acid)-g-poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether (PAA-g-mPEG), with side chain poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether (mPEG) were synthesized by free-radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and mPEG acrylic monoester macromonomers in isopropanol solution. The copolymer had high graft ratio and side chain length was different. mPEG acrylic monoester macromonomer was synthesized by acrylation of monomethoxy poly (ethylene glycol) with acryloyl chloride. mPEG acrylic monoester macromonomer and AA successfully copolymerized actively. Graft ratio of comb-shaped graft copolymer PAA-g-mPEG was high. Even if mPEG with weight average relative molecular mass 5000 (mPEG5000) was used as side chain, mass fraction of mPEG5000in copolymer could reach 55.1%. The comb-shaped graft copolymer was stable at 100 t.

Abstract:Novel block-graft copolymers [poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene)-g-poly(tert-butyl acrylate)] were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of tert-butyl acrylate (tBA) with chloromethylated poly(styrene-bethylene-co-butylene-b-styrene) (SEBS) as a macromolecular initiator. The copolymers were composed of triblock SEBS as the backbone and tBA as grafts attached to the polystyrene end blocks. The macromolecular initiator (chloromethylated SEBS) was prepared by successive hydrogenation and chloromethylation of SEBS. The degree of chloromethylation, ranging from 1.6 to 36.5 mol % according to the styrene units in SEBS, was attained with adjustments in the amount of SnCl, and the reaction time with a slight effect on the monodispersity of the starting material (SEBS). The ATRP mechanism of the copolymerization was supported by the kinetic data and the linear increase in the molecular weights of the products with conversion. The graft density was controlled with changes in the functionality of the chloromethylated SEBS. The average length of the graft chain, ranging from a few repeat units to about two hundred, was adjusted with changes in the reaction time and alterations in the initiator/catalyst/ligand molar ratio. Incomplete initiation was detected at a low conversion; moreover, for initiators with low functionality, sluggish initiation was overcome with suitable reaction conditions. The block-graft copolymers were hydrolyzed into amphiphilic ones containing poly(acrylic acid) grafts. The aggregation behavior of the amphiphilic copolymers was studied with dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy, and the aggregates showed a variety of morphologies. Abstract:A facile and environment friendly process, called water-solid phase suspension grafting polymerization, was developed to prepare polypropylene-g-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PP-g-PMMA) copolymer with a submicrometer microdomain. In this approach, graft polymerization was elaborately regulated to occur within micropores of polypropylene particles prepared by reactor granule technology. FTIR spectra of the samples after extraction demonstrated that PMMA was successfully grafted onto the PP. The results showed grafting percentage (GP) of PMMA increased with the increasing monomer ratios to PP and that could reach 13.6%. Whereas the grafting efficiency decreased as the monomer ratio increased. The addition of second monomer styrene improved GP up to 24.5%. Differential Scanning Calorimetry tests showed that the grafting of PMMA have a slight effect on the melting point and the relative crystallinity of PP. TEM micrographs demonstrated PMMA domains distributed in PP matrix with sizes ranging from about 100 to 300 nm. In addition, Shear viscosity increased with the growing GP indicated by rheological measurement. The preliminary evaluation showed PP-g-PMMA was effective in improving the compatibility of PP/acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate blends. (c) 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013
