Abstract:BaTiO3-based ceramics with various grain sizes (136-529 nm) are prepared through a chemical coating method followed by sintering in a reducing atmosphere. Effects of grain size and temperature on electric properties, energy-storage properties, and dielectric tunability are studied via Current-Field (J-E) curves, ferroelectric hysteresis loops, Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) curves and Thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC). At all temperatures, fine-grain ceramics yield a lower energy density but a higher energy efficiency under the same electric field, owing to a lower ferroelectric contribution. Meanwhile, fine-grain ceramics exhibit a higher maximum energy density due to their higher breakdown strength. Fine-grain ceramics with the grain size of 136 nm have the maximum energy density of 0.41 J/cm(3) under the breakdown strength of 75 kV/cm, the corresponding efficiency is 81%. C-V curves show that fine-grain ceramics have better bias-field stability. According to TSDC results, fine-grain ceramics exhibit fewer oxygen vacancies and a higher relaxation activation energy.
Influence of Grain Size on Dielectric Behavior in Lead-Free 0.5 Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5 (Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 Ceramics

Abstract:Fine-tuning of grain sizes can significantly influence the interaction between different dielectric phenomena, allowing the development of materials with tailored dielectric resistivity. By virtue of various synthesis mechanisms, a pathway to manipulate grain sizes and, consequently, tune the material's dielectric response is revealed. Understanding these intricate relationships between granulation and dielectric properties can pave the way for designing and optimizing materials for specific applications where tailored dielectric responses are sought. The experimental part involved the fabrication of dense BCT-BZT ceramics with different grain sizes by varying the synthesis (conventional solid-state reaction route and sol-gel) and consolidation methods. Both consolidation methods produced well-crystallized specimens, with Ba0.85Ca0.15O3Ti0.9Zr0.1 (BCTZ) perovskite as the major phase. Conventional sintering resulted in microstructured and submicron-structured BCT-BZT ceramics, with average grain sizes of 2.35 μm for the solid-state sample and 0.91 μm for the sol-gel synthesized ceramic. However, spark plasma sintering produced a nanocrystalline specimen with an average grain size of 67.5 nm. As the grain size decreases, there is a noticeable decrease in the maximum permittivity, a significant reduction in dielectric losses, and a shifting of the Curie temperature towards lower values.
Direct Measurement of Large Electrocaloric Effect in Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O3 Ceramics

Abstract:Barium zirconate titanate (BZT) (Ba(ZrxTi1-x)O3) ceramics with Zr4+ contents of x = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 mol % were prepared using a solid-state reaction approach. The microstructures, morphologies, and electric properties were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and impedance analysis methods, respectively. The dielectric analyses indicate that the BZT bulk ceramics show characteristics of phase transition from a normal ferroelectric to a relaxor ferroelectric with the increasing Zr4+ ionic content. The electrocaloric effect adiabatic temperature change decreases with the increasing Zr4+ content. The highest adiabatic temperature change obtained is 2.4 K for BZT ceramics with a 5 mol % of Zr4+ ionic content.
Large Electrocaloric Responsivity and Energy Storage Response in the Lead-Free Ba(GexTi1−x)O3 Ceramics

Abstract:Ferroelectric property that induces electrocaloric effect was investigated in Ba(GexTi1−x)O3 ceramics, known as BTGx. X-ray diffraction analysis shows pure perovskite phases in tetragonal symmetry compatible with the P4mm (No. 99) space group. Dielectric permittivity exhibits first-order ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition, confirmed by specific heat measurements, similar to that observed in BaTiO3 (BTO) crystal. Curie temperature varies weakly as a function of Ge-content. Using the direct and indirect method, we confirmed that the adiabatic temperature change ΔT reached its higher value of 0.9 K under 8 kV/cm for the composition BTG6, corresponding to an electrocaloric responsivity ΔT/ΔE of 1.13 × 10−6 K.m/V. Such electrocaloric responsivity significantly exceeds those obtained so far in other barium titanate-based lead-free electrocaloric ceramic materials. Energy storage investigations show promising results: stored energy density of ~17 mJ/cm3 and an energy efficiency of ~88% in the composition BTG5. These results classify the studied materials as candidates for cooling devices and energy storage applications.

Abstract:In the present work, BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics with grain sizes between 0.45 and 135 µm were prepared by solid-state reaction and classical sintering. The effect of grain size on dielectric properties was systematically explored, and it was found that dielectric permittivity reaches a maximum value for grain sizes between 1.5 and 10 µm and then rapidly drops for larger grain sizes. A numerical finite element method was employed to eliminate the effect of porosity on the effective values of permittivity. The results indicate that it is possible to have a critical size in slightly doped barium titanate ceramics with enhanced functional properties for a grain size between 1.5 and 10 µm.
Influence of sintering temperature on giant dielectric property of CaCu3Ti4O12

Abstract:Giant dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramic disc, prepared by solid reaction, were studied in a temperature ranging from 50 K to 300 K.Its surface microstructures were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that various factors, such as the crystallinity of CaCu3Ti4O12 grains, grain boundaries, defects and pores, significantly affect the dielectric properties of the ceramic to a varying degree, including the relative maximum dielectric constant, the critical temperature of low-high dielectric constant transition as well as the temperature dependence of polarized ion relaxation. As the densities of grain boundary and defect reduce, the relaxation temperature of the polarized ion drops down because interaction of defects and polarized ions weakens, decreasing the relaxation potential barrier. We suggest that the better the grain crystallinity, the weaker the temperature dependence of relaxation and the faster the low-high dielectric constant transition.

Abstract:Perovskite (1-x)Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-xBi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 (BST-BiMT-x) ceramics were prepared by sintering the corresponding powders synthesized by combining of solid state reaction method with citrate sol-gel and self-combustion techniques. Submicron grains morphology, high density and large resistivity were obtained in the BST-BiMT-x ceramics. In addition, the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops with slim shape which lead to enhanced energy-storage properties. The energy-storage density of these two ceramics increases almost linearly with increasing the applied electric filed. The energy-storage density and efficiency at 25 kV/cm of the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics sintered at 1200 degrees C are 141.2 mJ/cm(3 )and 79.3%, and 158.1 mJ/cm(3) and 76.7%, respectively, surpassing many recently reported values for ferroelectric/antiferroelectric ceramics. The enhanced energy-storage density and efficiency under low electric field can be attributed to the slim polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, high density accompanied by submicron grains morphology and pure perovskite structure.

Abstract:In the present work Ba(Ti1-xCex)O3 ceramics are prepared through a standard solid-state sintering process. Crystal structures, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties and electrocaloric effects are exactly studied. Ce4+ ions cannot entirely enter the position of Ti4+, so some impure phases are generated. The diffusivity of phase transition is strengthened by substituting Ti4+ with Ce4+ cations. The maximal pyroelectric coefficient decreases, and the extent of corresponding temperature deviating from the dielectric peak temperature to higher temperature increases with increasing the content of cerium cations. The adiabatic temperature change and isothermal entropy change display the same tendency as that of the pyroelectric coefficient. The Ba(Ti0.9Ce0.1)O3 ceramic shows the largest adiabatic temperature change of 0.41 K and the largest isothermal entropy change of 0.45 J/(kg·K) among the ceramics. Accordingly, the adiabatic temperature change responsivity is 0.090 × 10−6 K·m/V, and the isothermal entropy change responsivity is 0.100 × 10−6 J·m/(kg·K·V). For individual composition, the absolute value of pyroelectric coefficient decreases with increasing the magnitude of applied electric field, and the temperature of maximal pyroelectric coefficient deviates from the dielectric peak temperature shifts to higher temperature. Ba(Ti0.9Ce0.1)O3 ceramics show the largest pyroelectric energy density of 0.14 J/cm3 among all compositions.
Influence of Grain-Growth Inhibitors on Modified (Ba,Sr)(Sn,Ti)O3 for Electrocaloric Application

Abstract:The paper reports on effect of grain-growth inhibitors MgO, Y2O3 and MnCO3 as well as Ca modification on the microstructure, dielectric,, ferroelectric and electrocaloric (EC) properties of Ba0.82Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BSSnT). Furthermore, the effects of the sintering time and temperature on the microstructure and the electrical properties of the most promising material system Ba0.62Ca0.20Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BCSSnT-20) are investigated. Additions of MgO (xMgO = 1%), Y2O3 (xY2O3 = 0.25%) and MnCO3 (xMnCO3 = 1%) significantly decreased the mean grain size of BSSnT to 0.4 μm, 0.8 μm and 0.4 μm, respectively. Ba0.62Ca0.20Sr0.18Sn0.065Ti0.935O3 (BCSSnT-20) gained a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure with an average grain size of 1.5 μm, leading to a maximum electrocaloric temperature change |ΔTEC| of 0.49 K at 40 °C with a broad peak of |ΔTEC| > 0.33 K in the temperature range from 10 °C to 75 °C under an electric field change of 5 V μm−1. By increasing the sintering temperature of BCSSnT-20 from 1350 °C to 1425 °C, the grain size increased from 1.5 μm to 7.3 μm and the maximum electrocaloric temperature change increased from 0.15 K at 35 °C to 0.37 K at 20 °C under an electric field change of 2 V μm−1. Our results show that under all investigated material systems, BCSSnT-20 is the most promising candidate for future application in multilayer ceramic (MLC) components for EC cooling devices.

Abstract:The crystal structures, domain structures, dielectric strengths and electrocaloric effects of spark plasma sintered Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 and Ba0.7Sr0.3Ti0.997Mn0.003O3 ceramics have been investigated. The densification can be enhanced by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process without obvious grain growth, where the fine ferroelectric domain structures are obtained. The content of tetragonal phase in Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3 ceramics prepared by the SPS process is lower than that in the counterpart prepared by the conventionally sintering process, but it will increase again by partially substituting titanium with 0.3 mol% manganese ions. The dielectric strength can be significantly enhanced by the spark plasma sintering process, which can be improved further by Mn-substitution, and consequently the electrocaloric temperature change, Delta T, increases. Meanwhile, the electrocaloric strength has been enhanced by the spark plasma sintering process, which should be attributed to combined effects of domain wall density the content of ferroelectric phase in the present ceramics. Abstract:Crystal structures, dielectric, ferroelectric properties and electrocaloric effects of hetero-valent substituted Ba(Ti1-xYx)O3-x/2 ceramics were studied in the present work. The polar space group of P4mm was adopted based on the Rietveld refinement at room temperature. The diffusivity of phase transition and relaxor behavior are both strengthened by the yttrium substitution. The maximal pyroelectric coefficient decreases, and the extent of corresponding temperature deviated from the dielectric peak temperature to higher temperature increases with increasing the yttrium content. The adiabatic temperature changes and isothermal entropy changes display the same tendencies as those of the pyroelectric coefficients. The Ba(Ti0.944Y0.056)O2.972 ceramic shows the largest adiabatic temperature change and largest isothermal entropy change among all compositions over a broad temperature range of 50 K. For individual composition, the value of pyroelectric coefficient decreases with increasing the magnitude of applied electric field, and the temperature of maximal pyroelectric coefficient deviates from the dielectric peak temperature to higher temperature. Therefore, the optimal electrocaloric temperature can be adjusted by the magnitude of electric field in relaxor ferroelectricity.

Abstract:A large electrocaloric effect (ECE) near room temperature is reported in Sn doped BaTiO3 ceramics. By tuning Ba(Ti1−xSnx)O3 compositions which also exhibit relaxor ferroelectric response to near the invariant critical point, the Ba(Ti1−xSnx)O3 bulk ceramics at x ∼ 0.12 exhibit a large EC coefficient (ΔT/ΔE =0.27*10−6K⋅mV−1) over a 50 K temperature range. In addition to that, the diffuse phase transition is successfully applied to broaden the EC peaks under low electric field. These properties added together indicate a general solution of the electrocaloric materials with high performance for practical cooling applications.
Improvement of Electro-Caloric Effect and Energy Storage Density in BaTiO3-Bi(Zn, Ti)O3 Ceramics Prepared with BaTiO3 Nano-Powder

Abstract:BaTiO3-Bi(Zn,Ti)O3 (BT-BZT) ceramics have been used as capacitors due to their large dielectric permittivity and excellent temperature stability and are good candidates for lead-free materials for electrocaloric and energy storage devices. However, BT-BZT ceramics often suffer from inferior properties and poor reproducibility due to heterogeneous compositional distribution after calcination and sintering. In this work, (1−x)BT-xBZT ceramics (x = 0~0.2) were fabricated with nano-sized BaTiO3 raw materials (nano-BT) by a solid-state reaction method to enhance the chemical homogeneity. The (1−x)BT-xBZT ceramics prepared from the nano-BT showed larger densities and more uniform microstructures at the lower calcination and sintering temperatures than the samples prepared from more frequently used micrometer-sized raw materials BaCO3, TiO2, Bi2O3, and ZnO. The (1−x)BT-xBZT ceramic prepared from the nano-BT displayed a phase transition from a tetragonal ferroelectric to a pseudo-cubic relaxor in a narrower composition range than the sample prepared from micro-sized raw materials. Larger adiabatic temperature changes due to the electro-caloric effect (ΔTECE) and recoverable energy storage density (Urec) were observed in the samples prepared from the nano-BT due to the higher breakdown electric fields, the larger densities, and uniform microstructures. The 0.95BT-0.05BZT sample showed the largest ΔTECE of 1.59 K at 80 °C under an electric field of 16 kV/mm. The 0.82BT-0.18BZT sample displayed a Urec of 1.45 J/cm2, which is much larger than the previously reported value of 0.81 J/cm2 in BT-BZT ceramics. The nano-BT starting material produced homogeneous BT-BZT ceramics with enhanced ECE and energy storage properties and is expected to manufacture other homogeneous solid solutions of BaTiO3 and Bi-based perovskite with high performance.

Abstract:Taking the advantage of the low transition barrier between P4bm and P4mm distortions, tetragonal structured 0.875Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–0.125BaTiO3 was designed to construct an electrocaloric ceramics with large electrocaloric strength by adding the third compound Bi(Mg0.5Ti0.5)O3 (BMT). The experiments show that, through adding 2.5 mol.% BMT, a large ΔT of 0.80 K was directly observed under 4 kV/mm; especially, a high ΔT/ΔE of 0.020–0.023 K cm/kV was achieved, approximate to BaTiO3-based and some lead-based relaxors. The high electrocaloric effect is attributed to that the 2.5 mol.% BMT added sample bridges the nonergodic ferroelectric and ergodic relaxor states, and exhibits a microstructure coexisting P4bm and P4mm symmetries. Our design provides a new route in probing lead-free BNT-based electrocaloric materials apart from the MPB.

Abstract:Barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ) is a potential material for producing¬†lead-free piezoceramics-based electronic devices. Microstructural engineering improves ceramic materials' dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric characteristics. This research aims to investigate the impacts of the sintering process and Ca 2+ substitution on microstructure and electromechanical performance of the Ba 0.46 Sr 0.54 TiO 3 (BST) and Ba 0.46 Sr 0.27 Ca 0.27 TiO 3 (BSCT) samples. The Ba 0.46 Sr 0.54 TiO 3 and Ba 0.46 Sr 0.27 Ca 0.27 TiO 3 powders were synthesized using a solid-state reaction technique. X-ray diffraction indicated the presence of tetragonal and cubic phases in a single-phase powder. The sintering condition influences grain size and density; as the sintering temperature rises, grain size reduces and density increases. We measured grain sizes in the range of 0.89¬†to 2.14¬†¬Ķm, and densities between 82% and 93.5% of the theoretical density, along with dielectric constants between‚ÄČ~‚ÄČ250 and‚ÄČ~‚ÄČ6000 at 5¬†kHz. A relation between grain sizes, dielectric constants, and polarization behaviors in response to temperature and electric field were all evaluated. The giant impact was observed in by the inclusion of Ca 2+ in recoverable energy densities and efficiency from 1.21¬†J/cm 3 (BST@1250¬†¬įC at 20¬†kV/cm) to 1.76¬†J/cm 3 (BSCT@1250¬†¬įC at 20¬†kV/cm) and 21.48 to 51.50¬†%, respectively, in prepared piezoceramics.

Abstract:Lead-free ba0.85ca0.15zr0.1ti0.9o3 (bczt) ceramic powders were synthesized using the sol-gel method. to achieve high-energy storage and large electrocaloric effect in bulk ceramics the ceramics thickness was reduced. dielectric, ferroelectric, energy storage, and electrocaloric properties were investigated for bczt ceramic with 400 {\mu}m. here, pure crystalline structure and homogenous microstructure were identified by xrd analysis and sem measurements, respectively. the dielectric measurements revealed a maximum dielectric constant associated with ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. the maximum of {\epsilon} was 7841 around 352 k. furthermore, the bczt ceramic showed improved energy storage and electrocaloric properties. a high recoverable energy density wrec of 0.24 j/cm3 and a total energy density wtotal of 0.27 j/cm3 with an efficiency coefficient of ~ 88% at 423 k under an electric field of 55 kv/cm was obtained. besides, the maximum value of {\delta}t = 2.32 k, the electrocaloric responsivity {\zeta} = 0.42 k mm/kv, the refrigeration capacity rc= 4.59 j/kg and the coefficient of performance cop = 12.38 were achieved around 384 k under 55 kv/cm. the total energy density wtotal and the temperature change {\delta}t were also calculated by exploiting the landau-ginzburg-devonshire (lgd) theory. the theoretical results matched the experimental findings. these results suggest that the synthesized bczt ceramic with the reduced thickness could be a promising candidate for energy storage and electrocaloric applications.
Grain Size Effect and Microstructure Influence on the Energy Storage Properties of Fine‐grained BaTiO3‐based Ceramics

Abstract:The dependence of energy storage properties on grain size was investigated in BaTiO3-based ferroelectric ceramics. Modified BaTiO3 ceramics with different grain size were fabricated by two-step sintering method from BaTiO3 powders doped with Al2O3 and SiO2 by aqueous chemical coating. For samples doped with ZnO sintering aid in addition to Al2O3-SiO2, the density and breakdown strength increased significantly. In general, samples with smaller grains have lower polarization but higher energy storage efficiency. Al2O3-SiO2-ZnO-doped samples with average grain size of 118 +/- 2 nm have an energy density of 0.83 +/- 0.04J/cm(3). Obvious segregation of doping elements in second phase and grain boundary was observed by TEM-EDS. Impedance spectroscopy further explains the relationship between microstructure and properties. Compared to common energy storage ceramics, the grain size of this low-cost ceramics sintered at relatively low temperature is small, and the pilot scale production has been well completed. All these features make the utilization in multilayer devices and industrial mass production possible. In addition, the obtained rules are helpful in further development of energy storage ceramics.
Electrocaloric and energy storage properties of Pb-free 1-x(0.6Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 - 0.4(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3)-x(BiTa0.5La0.5)O3 relaxor ferroelectric ceramics

Abstract:This work highlights the electrocaloric (EC) and energy storage (ES) properties of 1-x(0.6Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -0.4(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 )-x(BiTa 0.5 La 0.5 )O 3 (1-xBZCT-xBTL) ceramics with x = 0 to 0.05. The XRD studies revealed that inclusion of BTL content in BZCT does not induce any impurity phase. The peak splitting of BZCT near 2θ = 45 and 66 confirms the presence of morphotropic phase boundary corresponding to tetragonal and rhombohedral phases. Further, the solid solution formation of BZCT-BTL has suppressed its morphotropic phase boundary behaviour. The XRD, Raman and temperature dependent dielectric studies suggest the presence of pseudocubic phase in 1-xBZCT-xBTL at higher values of x = 0.025 and 0.05. Moreover, the inclusion of BTL boosts the diffused phase transition behaviour of BZCT ceramics. Further, BTL strengthened its relaxor nature due to a reduction in grain size as evidenced from SEM analysis. It is observed that the 0.99BZCT-0.01BTL ceramics show 95% efficiency and a maximum recoverable energy density of 479 mJ/cm 3 at 100 kV/cm. Moreover, the electrocaloric temperature change and responsivity are found to be 1.06 K and 0.01 Kcm/kV near the transition temperature.

Abstract:Fine-grained Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 ceramics with and without dopants were fabricated by two-step sintering method. Densities of fine-grained ceramics were found lower than those of coarse-grained ceramics, while the breakdown strength improved. With ZnO-Li2O sintering aids doped, the sintering temperature of ceramics decreased to 1200 degrees C. Their grain size is 219 nm, energy density is 0.564 J/cm(3) and AC breakdown strength is 198.8 kV/cm, which is close to Ba0.4Sr0.6TiO3 ceramics obtained by SPS, and much higher than normal BST ceramics. The polarization of ceramics under the same electric field decreases with miniaturization of grain size, but the energy storage efficiency increases. Although smaller polarization due to small grain size is a disadvantage to energy density of bulk material, the features of low sintering temperature, traditional sintering route and small grain size jointly make the utilization in multilayer devices possible, thereby larger energy density can be achieved. The electrocaloric effect of Ba1-La Ti0.9Sn0.1O3 ceramics with excellent temperature stability near room temperature

Abstract:The Ba1-x La x Ti0.9Sn0.1O3 ceramics (x = 0, 0.006, 0.007, 0.008) were prepared by the traditional solid-state reaction method. The influence of La3+ on the phase, dielectric properties, ferroelectric properties, and electrocaloric effect (ECE) was analyzed in detail. The results of refinement show that all ceramics are multiphase coexistence at room temperature, including the cubic phase, the tetragonal phase, and the orthogonal phase. With the increase of La3+, the polar phases decrease but the non-polar phase increases, which is the main reason for the decline in adiabatic temperature change (ΔT). The analysis of dielectric properties and ferroelectric properties demonstrate that the diffuse phase transition is strengthened by introducing La3+. It also means that polar nanoregions (PNRs) might be formed. Therefore, the temperature stability of the Ba1-x La x Ti0.9Sn0.1O3 ceramics in a wide temperature range near room temperature is improved. Simultaneously, the PNRs provide additional entropy to improve ECE. A higher ΔT = 0.88 K is obtained under 60 kV/cm for x = 0.007, which also possesses excellent temperature stability in the temperature range of 298 K–378 K. The doping of La3+ also improves the electric field threshold of the electrocaloric strength (ΔT max /ΔE) and stabilizes the ΔT max /ΔE under a higher electric field, which is conducive to improving ECE under a higher electric field and providing another possible solution for promoting the practical application of ECE.
