Abstract:3D imaging via X‐ray microscopy (XRM), a form of tomography, is revolutionising materials characterisation. Nondestructive imaging to classify grains, particles, interfaces and pores at various scales is imperative for our understanding of the composition, structure, and failure of building materials. Various workflows now exist to maximise data collection and to push the boundaries of what has been achieved before, either from singular instruments, software or combinations through multimodal correlative microscopy. An evolving area on interest is the XRM data acquisition and data processing workflow; of particular importance is the improvement of the data acquisition process of samples that are challenging to image, usually because of their size, density (atomic number) and/or the resolution they need to be imaged at. Modern advances include deep/machine learning and AI resolutions for this problem, which address artefact detection during data reconstruction, provide advanced denoising, improved quantification of features, upscaling of data/images, and increased throughput, with the goal to enhance segmentation and visualisation during postprocessing leading to better characterisation of samples. Here, we apply three AI and machine‐learning‐based reconstruction approaches to cements and concretes to assist with image improvement, faster throughput of samples, upscaling of data, and quantitative phase identification in 3D. We show that by applying advanced machine learning reconstruction approaches, it is possible to (i) vastly improve the scan quality and increase throughput of 'thick' cores of cements/concretes through enhanced contrast and denoising using DeepRecon Pro, (ii) upscale data to larger fields of view using DeepScout and (iii) use quantitative automated mineralogy to spatially characterise and quantify the mineralogical/phase components in 3D using Mineralogic 3D. These approaches significantly improve the quality of collected XRM data, resolve features not previously accessible, and streamline scanning and reconstruction processes for greater throughput.

Abstract:The multi-scale characterization of building materials is necessary to understand complex mechanical processes, with the goal of developing new more sustainable materials. To that end, imaging methods are often used in materials science to characterize the microscale. However, these methods compromise the volume of interest to achieve a higher resolution. Dark-field (DF) contrast imaging is being investigated to characterize building materials in length scales smaller than the resolution of the imaging system, allowing a direct comparison of features in the nano-scale range and overcoming the scale limitations of the established characterization methods. This work extends the implementation of a dual-phase X-ray grating interferometer (DP-XGI) for DF imaging in a lab-based setup. The interferometer was developed to operate at two different design energies of 22.0 keV and 40.8 keV and was designed to characterize nanoscale-size features in millimeter-sized material samples. The good performance of the interferometer in the low energy range (LER) is demonstrated by the DF retrieval of natural wood samples. In addition, a high energy range (HER) configuration is proposed, resulting in higher mean visibility and good sensitivity over a wider range of correlation lengths in the nanoscale range. Its potential for the characterization of mineral building materials is illustrated by the DF imaging of a Ketton limestone. Additionally, the capability of the DP-XGI to differentiate features in the nanoscale range is proven with the dark-field of Silica nanoparticles at different correlation lengths of calibrated sizes of 106 nm, 261 nm, and 507 nm.

Abstract:A new method for dark field imaging is introduced which uses scanned electron diffraction (or 4DSTEM - 4-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy) datasets as its input. Instead of working on simple summation of intensity, it works on a sparse representation of the diffraction patterns in terms of a list of their diffraction peaks. This is tested on a thin perovskite film containing structural ordering resulting in additional superlattice spots that reveal details of domain structures, and is shown to give much better selectivity and contrast than conventional virtual dark field imaging. It is also shown to work well in polycrystalline aggregates of CuO nanoparticles. In view of the higher contrast and selectivity, and the complete exclusion of diffuse scattering from the image formation, it is expected to be of significant benefit for characterisation of a wide variety of crystalline materials.

4D Imaging of Mineral Dissolution in Porous Carbonado Diamond: Implications for Acid Digestion and XCT Measurement of Porosity and Material Properties

Abstract:In this study, we utilize high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to track the progress of a leaching process within a pore network. Dissolution and leaching are difficult processes to observe with combined temporal and spatial context, particularly when dissolving material within a non-reactive pore network, and XCT is a uniquely suited technique for observing dissolution in situ, and extracting quantitative data on pore networks and the material in them in 3D. We XCT image two samples of porous diamond (carbonado) during a sequential acid leaching procedure designed to remove a diverse assemblage of pore-filling minerals. This experiment provides a unique perspective for observing mineral dissolution in 4D, allowing us to identify differences in mineral inclusions and pore network topology between carbonado samples based on dissimilar dissolution styles and rates. We are also able to observe the formation of fluorides during acid digestion, which can persist throughout acid leaching procedures and drastically affect yields for geochemical measurements of certain elements, most importantly REEs, U, Th, and Pb. We test various approaches to measuring porosity, finding that methods based on quantitative interpretation of CT numbers as partial porosity give more accurate results than purely binary segmentation, and that attempts to segment the pore network using visual criteria are scattered and unreliable. We document how image quality can be locally affected by material properties, with filled pores measurably blurrier than empty ones. Such local variation in point-spread function is important when segmenting XCT data for the purposes of quantification. Finally, we demonstrate that by comparing mass and X-ray attenuation loss it is possible to estimate the relative heavy-metal content of the leached material.

Dark-field tomography of an attenuating object using intrinsic x-ray speckle tracking

Abstract:Purpose: We investigate how an intrinsic speckle tracking approach to speckle-based x-ray imaging is used to extract an object's effective dark-field (DF) signal, which is capable of providing object information in three dimensions. Approach: The effective DF signal was extracted using a Fokker-Planck type formalism, which models the deformations of illuminating reference beam speckles due to both coherent and diffusive scatter from the sample. Here, we assumed that (a) small-angle scattering fans at the exit surface of the sample are rotationally symmetric and (b) the object has both attenuating and refractive properties. The associated inverse problem of extracting the effective DF signal was numerically stabilized using a "weighted determinants" approach. Results: Effective DF projection images, as well as the DF tomographic reconstructions of the wood sample, are presented. DF tomography was performed using a filtered back projection reconstruction algorithm. The DF tomographic reconstructions of the wood sample provided complementary, and otherwise inaccessible, information to augment the phase contrast reconstructions, which were also computed. Conclusions: An intrinsic speckle tracking approach to speckle-based imaging can tomographically reconstruct an object's DF signal at a low sample exposure and with a simple experimental setup. The obtained DF reconstructions have an image quality comparable to alternative x-ray DF techniques.

Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of laboratory-based x-ray microscopes, using intensity-modulation masks, to access the sub-micron length scale in the dark field contrast channel while maintaining micron resolution in the resolved (refraction and attenuation) channels. The dark field contrast channel reveals the presence of ensembles of samples' features below the system resolution. Resolved refraction and attenuation channels provide multi-modal high-resolution imaging down to the micron scale. We investigate the regimes of modulated and un-modulated dark field as well as refraction, quantifying their dependence on the relationship between feature size in the imaged object and aperture size in the intensity-modulation mask. We propose an analytical model to link the measured signal with the sample's microscopic properties. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the microscopic dark field contrast channel in applications from both the life and physical sciences, providing proof of concept results for imaging collagen bundles in cartilage and dendritic growth in lithium batteries.
Single-shot X-ray Dark-field Tomography

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging creates a representation of the sample where contrast is generated by subresolution features within the volume under inspection. These are detected by a local measurement of the radiation field's angular distribution, and how it is affected by the interaction with matter. X-ray dark-field imaging typically requires taking multiple exposures for separating the contributions to the detected X-ray intensity arising from scattering, refraction and attenuation; a procedure often called phase retrieval. We propose an approach to retrieve an X-ray dark-field image from a single X-ray shot. We demonstrate the method using a laboratory-based, rotating anode X-ray tube system without the need for coherent radiation or a high-resolution detector. This reduces the complexity of data acquisition, enabling faster scanning and increasing dose efficiency. Moreover, our approach reduces the problem dimensionality by one, with substantial implications for data-intensive applications like tomography. The model assumes a homogeneous material, and we show this is a valid hypothesis for soft biological tissues by reconstructing dark-field tomography images from data sets containing a single shot per view. We believe our method to be broadly applicable and relevant for many X-ray dark-field imaging implementations, including fast radiography, directional dark-field and for use with pulsed X-ray sources.

Abstract:Non-invasive laboratory-based X-ray microtomography has been widely applied in many industrial and research disciplines. However, the main barrier to the use of laboratory systems compared to a synchrotron beamline is its much longer image acquisition time (hours per scan compared to seconds to minutes at a synchrotron), which results in limited application for dynamic in situ processes. Therefore, the majority of existing laboratory X-ray microtomography is limited to static imaging; relatively fast imaging (tens of minutes per scan) can only be achieved by sacrificing imaging quality, e.g. reducing exposure time or number of projections. To alleviate this barrier, we introduce an optimized implementation of a well-known iterative reconstruction algorithm that allows users to reconstruct tomographic images with reasonable image quality, but requires lower X-ray signal counts and fewer projections than conventional methods. Quantitative analysis and comparison between the iterative and the conventional filtered back-projection reconstruction algorithm was performed using a sandstone rock sample with and without liquid phases in the pore space. Overall, by implementing the iterative reconstruction algorithm, the required image acquisition time for samples such as this, with sparse object structure, can be reduced by a factor of up to 4 without measurable loss of sharpness or signal to noise ratio. Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging can provide insight into the small-angle scattering properties of the image objects. The grating interferometry can offer the attenuation contrast, phase contrast and small-angle scattering contrast simultaneously, in which the small-angle scattering contrast, i.e. the dark-field image, show unique and complementary information to the previously reported attenuation contrast and phase contrast imaging. Here, we report on a significant milestone in dark-field imaging: the X-ray dark-field tomography result of fresh biological samples, i.e. the fresh cherry tomato, with the grating interferometry. Significant advantages are provided by the dark-field tomography over the absorption-based imaging and the phase-contrast imaging in distinguishing the internal structures of the tomato. In consequence, the method provides a new way for nondestructive testing and diagnostic technology in medicine, biology and material science.

Abstract:X-ray diffusive dark-field imaging, which allows spatially unresolved microstructure to be mapped across a sample, is an increasingly popular tool in an array of settings. Here, we present a new algorithm for phase and dark-field computed tomography based on the x-ray Fokker-Planck equation. Needing only a coherent x-ray source, sample, and detector, our propagation-based algorithm can map the sample density and dark-field/diffusion properties of the sample in 3D. Importantly, incorporating dark-field information in the density reconstruction process enables a higher spatial resolution reconstruction than possible with previous propagation-based approaches. Two sample exposures at each projection angle are sufficient for the successful reconstruction of both the sample density and dark-field Fokker-Planck diffusion coefficients. We anticipate that the proposed algorithm may be of benefit in biomedical imaging and industrial settings.

Abstract:Dark-field X-ray microscopy (DFXM) is a nondestructive full-field imaging technique providing three dimensional mapping of microstructure and local strain fields in deeply embedded crystalline elements. This is achieved by placing an objective lens in the diffracted beam, giving a magnified projection image. So far, the method has been applied with a time resolution of milliseconds to hours. In this work, we consider the feasibility of DFXM at the picosecond time scale using an X-ray free electron laser source and a pump-probe scheme. We combine thermomechanical strain wave simulations with geometrical optics and wavefront propagation optics to simulate DFXM images of phonon dynamics in a diamond single crystal. Using the specifications of the XCS instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) as an example results in simulated DFXM images clearly showing the propagation of a strain wave.

Abstract:Dark-field X-ray imaging is a novel modality which visualises scattering from unresolved microstructure. Most dark-field imaging techniques rely on crystals or structured illumination, but recent work has shown that dark-field effects are observable in straightforward propagation-based imaging (PBI). Based on the single-material X-ray Fokker--Planck equation with an a priori dark-field energy dependence, we propose an algorithm to extract phase and dark-field effects from dual-energy PBI images. We successfully apply the dark-field retrieval algorithm to simulated and experimental dual-energy data, and show that by accounting for dark-field effects, projected thickness reconstruction is improved compared to the classic Paganin algorithm. With the emergence of spectral detectors, the method could enable single-exposure dark-field imaging of dynamic and living samples.

Abstract:Diestian ferruginous sandstone has been used as the dominant building stone for monuments in the Hageland, a natural landscape in east-central Belgium. Like all rocks, this stone type is sensitive to weathering. Case hardening was observed in combination with blackening of the exterior parts of the dressed stones. To determine the 3D petrography and to identify the structural differences between the exterior and interior parts, X-ray computed tomography was used in combination with more traditional research techniques like optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The 3D characterization of the ferruginous sandstone was performed with a high-resolution X-ray CT scanner (www.ugct.ugent.be) in combination with the flexible 3D analysis software Morpho+, which provides the necessary petrophysical parameters of the scanned samples in 3D. Besides providing the required 3D parameters like porosity, pore-size distribution, grain size, grain orientation, and surface analysis, the results of the 3D analysis can also be visualized, which enables to understand and interpret the analysis results in a straightforward way. The complementarities between high-quality X-ray CT images and flexible 3D software and its relation with the more traditional microscopical research techniques are opening up new gateways in the study of weathering processes of natural building stones.

Abstract:Coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) and scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) are two popular microscopy techniques that have evolved quite independently. CDI promises to reach resolutions below 10 nanometers, but the reconstruction procedures put stringent requirements on data quality and sample preparation. In contrast, STXM features straightforward data analysis, but its resolution is limited by the spot size on the specimen. We demonstrate a ptychographic imaging method that bridges the gap between CDI and STXM by measuring complete diffraction patterns at each point of a STXM scan. The high penetration power of x-rays in combination with the high spatial resolution will allow investigation of a wide range of complex mesoscopic life and material science specimens, such as embedded semiconductor devices or cellular networks.

Abstract:Dark field X-ray microscopy (DXFM) can visualize microstructural distortions in bulk crystals. Using the femtosecond X-ray pulses generated by X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL), DFXM can achieve sub-{\mu}m spatial resolution and <100 fs time resolution simultaneously. In this paper, we demonstrate ultrafast DFXM measurements at the European XFEL to visualize an optically-driven longitudinal strain wave propagating through a diamond single crystal. We also present two DFXM scanning modalities that are new to the XFEL sources: spatially 3D and 2D axial-strain scans with sub-{\mu}m spatial resolution. With this progress in XFEL-based DFXM, we discuss new opportunities to study multi-timescale spatio-temporal dynamics of microstructures.

Abstract:The issue of preserving carbonatic stones of cultural heritage (CH) restored in the past that have undergone new decay phenomena is strongly emerging and conservation science has not yet found a reliable solution. In this paper, we propose the application of synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRDCT) to explore the effects of using inorganic-mineral products (ammonium oxalate; ammonium phosphate) in sequence as a novel, compatible and effective re-treatment approach to consolidate decayed carbonatic stones already treated with inorganic-mineral treatments. High-quality XRDCT datasets were used to qualitatively/quantitatively investigate and 3D localize the complex mixture of crystalline phases formed after the conservation re-treatments within a porous carbonatic stone substrate. The XRDCT reconstruction images and the structural refinements of XRD patterns with the Rietveld methods showed that the phase composition of reaction products, their volume distribution, and weight fraction vary as a function of the treatment sequence and penetration depth. The high potential of XRDCT allows (i) assessment of peculiar trends of each treatment/treatment sequence; (ii) exploration of the reaction steps of the sequential treatments and (iii) demonstration of the consolidating effect of inorganic re-treatments, non-destructively and at the micron scale. Above all, our study (i) provides new analytical tools to support the conservation choices, (ii) showcases new analytical possibilities for XRDCT in conservation science, including in investigations of CH materials and decay processes, and (iii) opens up new perspectives in analytical chemistry and material characterisation for the non-destructive and non-invasive analysis of reactions within heterogeneous polycrystalline systems.

Abstract:X-ray dark-field imaging enables a spatially-resolved visualization of ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering. Using phantom measurements, we demonstrate that a material's effective dark-field signal may be reduced by modification of the visibility spectrum by other dark-field-active objects in the beam. This is the dark-field equivalent of conventional beam-hardening, and is distinct from related, known effects, where the dark-field signal is modified by attenuation or phase shifts. We present a theoretical model for this group of effects and verify it by comparison to the measurements. These findings have significant implications for the interpretation of dark-field signal strength in polychromatic measurements.

Abstract:Significance X-ray Talbot−Lau grating interferometry provides a differential phase contrast and a dark-field image containing scattering information. The dark-field image is sensitive to granular and fibrous microstructures with sizes in the range of the grating periods (circa 5 μm), much below the typical resolution of medical imaging techniques like angiography or fluoroscopy (circa 150 μm). Dark-field contrast is influenced by the orientation of the microstructure in the object. We present an approach to recover the local microstructure orientation in a tomographic 3D reconstruction. Per voxel, we quantitatively reconstruct the vector of the dominant local orientation and the amount of (an)isotropic scattering for relatively large samples using a standard medical X-ray setup. This is experimentally shown for various specimens exhibiting varying degrees of structural orderings.

Abstract:Permeability and heat transport through building materials ultimately dictates their insulatory performance over a buildings service lifetime. Experiments combining XCT with numerical modelling are an accepted method of studying pore scale processes and have been used extensively in the oil and gas industry to study highly complex reservoir rocks. However, despite the obvious similarities in structure and application, these techniques have not yet been widely adopted by the building and construction industry. An experimental investigation was performed on the pore structure of several building materials, including conventional, historic, and innovative, using XCT and direct numerical simulation. Six samples were imaged at between a 4 and 15 micron resolution inside a micro-CT scanner. The porosity and connectivity were extracted with the grain, throat, and pore size distributions using image analysis. The permeability, velocity, and thermal conductivity were then investigated using GeoChemFoam, our highly-versatile and open source numerical solver. It was found that each material had a unique, heterogeneous and sometimes multi-scale structure that had a large impact on the permeability and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, it was found that the method of including sub-resolution porosity directly effected these bulk property calculations for both parameters, especially in the materials with high structural heterogeneity. This is the first multi-scale study of structure, flow and heat transport on building materials and this workflow could easily be adapted to understand and improve designs in other industries that use porous materials such as fuel cells and batteries technology, lightweight materials and insulation, and semiconductors.

Abstract:We introduce a structured illumination technique for dark-field x-ray microscopy optimized for three-dimensional imaging of ordered materials at sub-micrometer length scales. Our method utilizes a coded aperture to spatially modulate the incident x-ray beam on the sample, enabling the reconstruction of the sample's 3D structure from images captured at various aperture positions. Unlike common volumetric imaging techniques such as tomography, our approach casts a scanning x-ray silhouette of a coded aperture for depth resolution along the axis of diffraction, eliminating any need for sample rotation or rastering, leading to a highly stable imaging modality. This modification provides robustness against geometric uncertainties during data acquisition, particularly for achieving sub-micrometer resolutions where geometric uncertainties typically limit resolution. We introduce the image reconstruction model and validate our results with experimental data on an isolated twin domain within a bulk single crystal of an iron pnictide obtained using a dark-field x-ray microscope. This timely advancement aligns with the enhanced brightness upgrade of the world's synchrotron radiation facilities, opening unprecedented opportunities in imaging.
