Abstract:Warm deformation is a plastic-forming process that differs from traditional cold and hot forming techniques. At the macro level, it can effectively reduce the problem of high deformation resistance in cold deformation and improve the surface decarburization issues during the hot deformation process. Microscopically, it has significant advantages in controlling product structure, refining grain size, and enhancing product mechanical properties. The Gleeble-1500D thermal-mechanical physical simulation system was used to conduct isothermal compression tests on GCr15 bearing steel. The tests were conducted at temperatures of 600-1050 °C and strain rates of 0.01-5 s-1. Based on the experimental data, the critical strain model and dynamic recrystallization model for the warm-hot forming of GCr15 bearing steel were established in this paper. The model accuracy is evaluated using statistical indicators such as the correlation coefficient (R). The dynamic recrystallization model exhibits high predictive accuracy, as indicated by an R-value of 0.986. The established dynamic recrystallization model for GCr15 bearing steel was integrated into the Forge® 3.2 numerical simulation software through secondary program development to simulate the compression process of GCr15 warm-hot forming. The dynamic recrystallization fraction was analyzed in various deformation regions. The grain size of the severe deformation zone, small deformation zone, and difficult deformation zone was compared based on simulated compression specimens under the conditions of 1050 °C and 0.1 s-1 with the corresponding grain size obtained with measurement based on metallographic photos; the relative error between the two is 5.75%. This verifies the accuracy of the established dynamic recrystallization and critical strain models for warm-hot deformation of GCr15 bearing steel. These models provide a theoretical basis for the finite element method analysis and microstructure control of the warm-hot forming process in bearing races.

Abstract:To improve the understanding of coupling effect between dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviors and flow behaviors of as-cast AlCu4SiMg, a finite element (FE) simulation equipped with the models of DRX evolution was implemented. A series of isothermal compression tests were performed primarily on a Gleeble−3500 thermo-mechanical simulator in a temperature range of 648−748 K and a strain rate range of 0.01−10 s−1. According to the measured true stress−strain data, the strain hardening rate curves (dσ/dε versus σ) were plotted to identify the critical strains for DRX initiation (εc). By further derivation of the related material constants, the DRX volume fraction equation and the strain for 50% DRX (ε0.5) equation were solved. Accordingly, the aforementioned DRX equations were implanted into the FE model to conduct a series of simulations for the isothermal compression tests. The results show that during the evolution of DRX volume fraction at a fixed strain rate, the strain required for the same amount of DRX volume fraction increases with decreasing temperature. In contrast, at a fixed temperature, it increases with increasing strain rate. Ultimately, the DRX kinetics model of AlCu4SiMg alloy and the consequence of the FE analysis were validated by microstructure observations.

Abstract:In this work, microstructure evolution of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior in Cr12MoV die steel was investigated via experiments and simulations systematically. Firstly, hot compression tests were performed to obtain the true stress–strain curves. Based on the experimental results, the flow stress model was established, and Avrami equation was developed to model the kinetics of DRX. Then, the cellular automaton (CA) model was established to describe DRX behavior. In order to obtain more accurate simulation results, a microstructure enhancement, extraction and conversion program based on fingerprint image enhancement algorithm was developed to generate real initial microstructure which could be directly used in CA simulation. With real initial microstructure generation, good agreement between simulated and experimental results was achieved, indicating the high accuracy of the established CA model. Finally, the CA model was employed to investigate the hot deformation behavior of Cr12MoV die steel under multiple thermomechanical conditions. It could be found that a lower strain rate was beneficial to the occurrence of DRX. When the strain rate was beyond 1.0 s−1, the DRX fraction was very small. This work would provide a significant guidance to optimize the hot working process of Cr12MoV die steel or some other similar steels.

Abstract:Dynamic recrystallization, on which grain size of the final forging depends mainly, is one of the most important microstructure evolution processes in moderate-to-low stacking fault energy metals. In this paper, the process of dynamic recrystallization is simulated by numerical method. The paper first gives a visco-plastic model considering dynamic recrystallization in detail; secondly gives the applied finite element formulation and compiles an finite element program in Visual Fortran 6.5 based on the updated Lagrangian formulation rigid-plastic finite element; thirdly the material parameters are identified through inverse analysis, based on the compiled finite element program and the developed global optimization method; at last, the compiled finite element program is applied to simulate the microstructure evolution caused by dynamic recrystallization, the calculated result agrees with the experimental result relatively well.

Abstract:Describing the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviors and grain evolution mechanisms in the hot forming process contributes to controlling microstructures and enhancing mechanical properties of materials. Here, the isothermal compression experiments for SAE 5137H steel were conducted under temperatures of 1123-1483 K and strain rates of 0.01-10 s(-1). The DRX kinetics models, including DRX volume fraction and grain size models, and the meso-scale cellular automaton (CA) models, were established based on the obtained true stress-strain curves and microstructure observation results. In order to dynamically reveal DRX behaviors and grain morphology evolution, a multi-field and multi-scale coupling finite element (FE) model for the hot compression process was developed by embedding the solved DRX kinetics models and CA models. Results show that the DRX volume fraction and grain size increase with temperature increasing and strain rate decreasing. The DRX grains are easier to nucleate at the initial grain boundaries. As strain increases, DRX grains grow up by devouring the matrix grains until DRX occurs completely. The microstructures after compression are composed of equiaxed DRX grains. Finally, the comparisons of grain size between experimental results and simulation results were performed. The mean relative errors between experimental results and predicted results from DRX kinetics models, and between experimental results and predicted results from CA models, were evaluated as 6.5% and 6.0%, respectively. It proves that the developed FE model can well describe the microstructure evolution in the hot deformation process of SAE 5137H steel.

Abstract:Single-pass compression tests of an alumina-forming austenite (AFA) alloy (Fe–20Cr–30Ni–0.6Nb–2Al–Mo) were performed using a Gleeble-3500 thermal–mechanical simulator. By combining techniques of electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of the alloy at temperatures of 950–1100 °C and strain rates of 0.01–1.00 s−1 was investigated. The regression method was adopted to determine the thermal deformation activation energy and apparent stress index and to construct a thermal deformation constitutive model. Results reveal that the flow stress is strongly dependent on temperature and strain rate and it increases with temperature decreasing and strain rate increasing. The DRX phenomenon occurs more easily at comparably higher deformation temperatures and lower strain rates. Based on the method for solving the inflection point via cubic polynomial fitting of strain hardening rate (θ) versus strain (ε) curves, the ratio of critical strain (ε c) to peak strain (ε p) during DRX was precisely predicted. The nucleation mechanisms of DRX during thermal deformation mainly include the strain-induced grain boundary (GB) migration, grain fragmentation, and subgrain coalescence.

Abstract:The hot deformation behaviors of Fe–28Mn–10Al–1.5C–0.6V steel at T = 950–1150 °C and = 0.01–10 s −1 were studied using the Gleeble-3500 thermo-mechanical simulator. The constitutive model of Fe–28Mn–10Al–1.5C–0.6V steel was established by an artificial neural network (ANN) based on the experimental flow stress data. The critical conditions of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of the steel under experimental conditions were studied by using both the Najafizadeh–Jonas work hardening rate model and the Cingara–McQueen rheological stress model. The true stress–true strain curve of the steel was analyzed, the work hardening rate was calculated, and the critical strain model was established. At the same time, the relevant material parameters were calculated by linear regression, and the DRX kinetics model of JMAK was also established. This model then was combined with the finite element software DEFORM-3D to simulate the DRX behavior of the steel during hot deformation. These results indicated that the rheological stress of Fe–28Mn–10Al–1.5C–0.6V steel at low shows higher temperature sensitivity and that high T and low are conducive to the occurrence of DRX. The average relative error of the ANN constitutive model is 2.40%, which has high prediction accuracy. The dynamic recrystallization conditions determined by the above models are reliable and conform to the experimental rules. By verifying the microstructure of the steel after thermal compression, the prediction error of the finite element model to the DRX volume fraction is mostly within 10%. Thus, the model has a good predictive ability and provides an effective tool for predicting plastic deformation and microstructure in industrial production.

Abstract:The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of austenite in reduced activation ferritic/martensitic steel was investigated by isothermal compression tests and constitutive modelling. The flow stress decreases with deformation temperature increasing and strain rate decreasing. The constitutive equations were constructed based on the analysis by Arrhenius equations. Based on the dynamic material model, the hot processing map was constructed. In the stability region, the power dissipation efficiency (η) increases with increasing strain, and the softening is dominated by DRX when η grows to a specific value. However, η decreases as strain increases further after the complete evolution of DRX, indicating coarsening of DRXed grains. As the strain increases, the processing stability region shifts to the low temperature and high strain rate region. A novel recrystallization kinetics model was developed by considering the characteristics of the recrystallization velocity with strain increasing. It can reflect the "slow-rapid-slow" growth trend of recrystallization volume fraction (XDRX). The relationship between XDRX and D¯ (average grain size of austenite) was constructed, which indicates that D¯ decreases with strain increasing after the onset of DRX. When XDRX is greater than 50%, the decrease rate of D¯ slows down until the steady-state is reached. Although strain increase further, the grain size remains constant. This suggests that the expected D¯ can be obtained by controlling XDRX during hot deformation.

Abstract:Abstract In view that the traditional dynamic recrystallization (DRX) model cannot effectively predict the DRX process in the hot deformation process of sheet metal, DRX behavior modeling and simulation of q890 steel plate based on the plane strain compression test are designed. The plane strain thermal simulation tests were performed at 1,223–1,373 K and the strain rates of 1–50 −1 on Gleeble-3500 thermal–mechanical simulator. The flow stress curves were well smoothed. The stress–strain data were investigated for the analysis of the dynamic recrystallization in the process of thermal deformation. The activation energy of DRX was calculated as Q = 394.53 kJ/mol by the simulation data. The equation of peak strain was developed with the flow stress data by the Zener–Hollomon parameter. The DRX transformation fraction of Q890 steel was studied, and the DRX kinetics equation was developed by the Avrami equation. The experimental data are in good agreement with the calculated values, which proves the reliability of the DRX model and can be widely used in real life.

Abstract:In this paper, the flow behavior and evolution of microstructure during the hot forging process are predicted using numerical simulation, providing a reference for optimizing the process. The flow stress-strain curve of 30Cr2Ni3MoV steel was obtained by conducting hot compression experiments using Gleeble-3500 thermal simulator. The constitutive and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) cellular automaton (CA) models were established by analyzing the thermal deformation behavior, considering work hardening and DRX softening. This model was optimized by combining the dislocation density difference drive mechanism, increasing the total number of grain orientations, and then implementing Hash mapping to obtain the actual grain orientation. The simulation results of strain and strain rate in the process of thermal deformation were obtained through the constitutive model. Compared with the results of the hot compression experiment and the metallographic experiment, the accuracy of the simulation results of the DRX CA model was verified. Finally, the real-time updating module of deformation parameters is established, and the real-time process parameters of deformation calculation are updated to the CA model. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental results through metallographic experiments.

Abstract:Dynamic recrystallization (DRX) is the predominant softening mechanism under high‐temperature large‐plastic deformation and determines the microstructure evolution of steel. Herein, an equivalent substitution method is proposed to investigate the coupling effect of deformation conditions on microstructural evolution during the flexible rolling process. Low‐carbon steel is compressed using a Gleeble 3800‐GTC thermal–mechanical physical simulation system at temperatures ranging from 900 to 1100 °C and strain rates ranging from 0.01 to 10 s −1 . The flow stress behaviors under different deformation conditions are discussed. Accordingly, the relationship between strain rate and temperature is established using the Zener–Hollomon equation. Further, a new DRX model is proposed by combining the theoretical implications of previous models. The effectiveness of the experimental model and predicted model is statistically evaluated to accurately determine the DRX volume fraction of the experimental steel. Based on the dynamic material model, a hot processing map of the experimental steel is also developed to evaluate the steel's hot workability. Finally, the microstructure of the experimental steel is analyzed under specific deformation parameters. The results demonstrate that DRX behavior decreases as the upper roller is raised and the lower roller is lowered during the flexible rolling process.

Abstract:A Gleeble thermal–mechanical simulator equipped with an induction heating system was employed to perform single pass compression test to study the dynamic recrystallization behavior of a high-strength low-alloy steel in a wide range of temperatures ( 900°C-1050°C) and strain rates (0.1 s −1 -10 s −1 ). Based on the flow behavior of the tested steel, a new method has been proposed to determine the stress or strain for the onset of dynamic recrystallization. The resultant stresses or strains are compared with the ones determined by using the previous method to confirm the validity of the new method. Moreover, the stress or strain for the onset of dynamic recrystallization is modeled using Zener-Hollomon parameter. With the assistant of the process parameters, temperature, strain and stress, the activation energy has been determined. Finally, the dynamic recrystallization kinetics model is constructed and the validity is tested.

Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) alloy is a (α + β) two-phase titanium alloy and has good process plasticity, superplasticity, and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in the aerospace industry. During the hot working process, the microstructure and deformation behavior affect its mechanical properties. However, most of the current research focuses on the use of metallographic methods and physical modeling methods to characterize and estimate the evolution of microstructures and lacks accuracy. Therefore, in this study, the thermal deformation behavior of TC4 titanium alloy is predicted and the dynamic recrystallization process is visualized through thermal simulation test, metallographic test, particle swarm optimization–backpropagation (PSO–BP) algorithm, and cellular automata (CA) method. The conclusions are as follows: the grain growth of TC4 titanium alloy is relatively uneven during hot compression. The increase in temperature and the decrease in strain rate are favorable to dynamic recrystallization. After hot compression, the grain texture appeared in the microstructure of TC4 titanium alloy, and the type and strength of texture changed with the change in temperature. Based on the PSO–BP algorithm, the rheological behavior of TC4 titanium alloy during hot compression is predicted. Compared with the experimental value, the correlation of the PSO–BP model is 0.9972, and the error is within 10%. Finally, using the PSO–BP algorithm as the input, combined with the CA method and the related theory of dynamic recrystallization, the dynamic recrystallization behavior of TC4 titanium alloy during hot compression is simulated. The electron backscatter diffraction test is used for comparison, and the simulated microstructure is similar to the experimental structure after removing the influence of some defects. The average grain size error is within 10%. It shows that this model can well predict the dynamic recrystallization behavior of TC4 titanium alloy during hot compression.
An improved cellular automaton model of dynamic recrystallization and the constitutive model coupled with dynamic recrystallization kinetics for microalloyed high strength steels

Abstract:This study analyzed the deformation behavior of Nb–Ti microalloyed high strength steel at strain rates of 0.001–0.1 s −1 and deformation temperatures of 1050–1150 °C using hot compression tests. The deformation activation energy of 321.1 kJ/mol was calculated based on the stress-strain curve, and the characteristic points on the flow stress curve were extracted. In contrast, the relationship equation between the characteristic points and the Zener-Hollomon parameter was established. A modified dynamic recrystallization (DRX) kinetics model was proposed based on the stress-strain data, considering the strain rate and deformation temperature. A high-precision constitutive model was established based on the dislocation density evolution phenomenological model, which couples with the modified DRX kinetics model. Furthermore, an improved DRX cellular automaton (CA) model was constructed, which comprehensively took into account a series of processes such as dislocation density evolution, recrystallization nucleation, and grain growth. Notably, the model also embedded the pinning effect of second phase (SP) particles on the DRX process. The improved CA model can control the pinning force by adjusting the size and volume fraction of SP particles and can accurately predict the evolution characteristics of DRX and the average austenite grain size of Nb–Ti microalloyed high strength steels during thermal deformation. The development of an improved CA model can be extended to apply to the DRX evolution of other microalloyed steels, and the model provides a powerful tool and method for understanding the thermal deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of microalloyed steels.

Dynamic Recrystallization Behavior and Constitutive Modeling of As-Cast 30cr2ni4mov Steel Based on Flow Curves

Abstract:The compression deformation of 30Cr2Ni4MoV steel at different temperatures and strain rates is carried out on Gleeble 1500 thermal mechanical simulation tester. Based on the experimental flow curves, the strain hardening rate curves (θ = dσ/dε versus σ) are derived, from which the characteristic stresses and strains are identified. Meanwhile, the dependences of the characteristic stresses and strains on Zener-Hollomon parameter are determined and the results show that the value of the critical stress of dynamic recrystallization is close to the value of the steady stress. With the aid of the experimental flow curves, the Avrami equation is employed to describe the kinetics of dynamic recrystallization. The time exponent (n) is expressed as a power law function of Zener-Hollomon parameter and the Avrami constant (k) is determined as a function of half of the time for the complete dynamic recrystallization (t 50). Furthermore, a constitutive model is presented based on the rule of mixtures when the dynamic recrystallization occurs. Validation of the constitutive model is implemented and the simulated results agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:<p>The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of Ni-Fe-Cr based alloy was studied in temperature range of 980–1130 °C and strain rate range of 0.01–10s<sup>−1</sup>. By systematically analyzing the stress-strain data and microstructure evolution of NiFeCr based alloy, the influences of strain rate, temperature and strain on the critical conditions for DRX behavior were investigated. Meanwhile, the constitutive equation of the correlation between peak stress and Z parameters was established by using hyperbolic sine constitutive equation. The DRX critical strain model, kinetics model and grain size model of the studied alloy were also established. The deformation activation energy is 496.92 kJ/mol. The DRX behavior of the studied alloy is sensitive to deformation temperature and strain rate. With the decrease of strain rates or the increase of deformation temperatures, the critical strain of DRX softening decreases, and the volume fraction of DRX increases. In addition, the three models can accurately predict and characterize DRX behavior of the studied alloy.</p>

Abstract:The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior and microstructure evolution of medium-Mn (0.15C–10Mn) steel were investigated through isothermal hot compression tests. The flow stress–strain curves and microstructure analysis, in wide ranges of temperatures (900–1150 °C) and strain rates (10 −3 - 1 s −1 ), were employed to establish constitutive equations and a grain size evolution model. Since the material constants were calculated based on polynomial function of strains, strain compensation was introduced into constitutive analysis. Comparison and verification showed that the constitutive equation had a high predictive ability. The correlation coefficient and average absolute relative error were 0.99 and 4.46%, respectively, which confirm the accuracy and guidance of the model. Metallographic observation was used to implement the grain size evolution analysis of the medium-Mn steel. Microstructure evolution was characterized with a gradual increase in average recrystallized grain size and an obvious expansion in the range of grain size distribution with both deformation temperature and strain rate, which were attributed to the competition between nucleation and grain boundary migration. Besides, a grain size evolution model was established to analyze the microstructure evolution.

An Internal-State-Variable-Based Continuous Dynamic Recrystallization Model for Thermally Deformed TC18 Alloy

Abstract:Continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) is widely acknowledged to occur during hot forming and plays a significant role in microstructure development in alloys with moderate to high stacking fault energy. In this work, the flow stress and CDRX behaviors of the TC18 alloy subjected to hot deformation across a wide range of processing conditions are studied. It is observed that deformation leads to the formation of new low-angle grain boundaries (LAGBs). Subgrains rotate by absorbing dislocations, resulting in an increase in LAGB misorientation and the transition of some LAGBs into high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). The HAGBs migrate within the material, assimilating the (sub)grain boundaries. Subsequently, an internal state variable (ISV)-based CDRX model is developed, incorporating parameters such as the dislocation density, adiabatic temperature rise, subgrain rotation, LAGB area, HAGB area, and LAGB misorientation angle distribution. The values of the correlation coefficient (R), relative average absolute error (RAAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) between the anticipated true stress and measured stress are 0.989, 6.69%, and 4.78 MPa, respectively. The predicted outcomes demonstrate good agreement with experimental findings. The evolving trends of the subgrain boundary area under various conditions are quantitatively analyzed by assessing the changes in dynamic recovery (DRV)-eliminated dislocations and misorientation angles. Moreover, the ISV-based model accurately predicts the decreases in grain and crystallite sizes with higher strain rates and lower temperatures. The projected outcomes also indicate a transition from a stable and coarse-grained microstructure to a continuously recrystallized substructure.

Abstract:The dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and flow stress of Nb‐bearing steels were investigated by means of isothermal single compression testing at temperatures of 850‐105° and at constant strain rate from 0.1 to 20s‐1 using a Gleeble 3800 thermo‐mechanical simulator in order to model the DRX processes and predict the flow stress during plate rolling. On the basis of the measured flow stress, a new model of DRX kinetics was proposed to calculate the volume fraction of dynamically recrystallized grains, which was a function of processing parameters such as deformation temperature, strain, strain rate, the initial austenite grain size and Nb content. The effect of deformation conditions was quantified by the Zener‐Hollomon parameter, in which the activation energy of deformation was expressed as a power function of Nb content. The critical strain was determined by using the method proposed by Jonas and co‐workers. It is shown that the ratio of the critical strain to the peak strain decreases with increasing Nb content, from which an empirical equation was developed. In addition, the influence of Nb content and deformation conditions on the steady state grain size was determined by fitting the experimental results to a linear relationship. Finally, the flow stress of Nb bearing steels was accurately predicted using a one‐internal‐variable evolution equation by taking Nb content as a parameter and including the influence of DRX. The comparison between the experimental and theoretical results confirmed that the modeling had a good accuracy to predict flow stresses during hot deformation.
