Abstract:This paper employs the Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate and analyze the effects of corrosion defect parameters on the stress and failure pressure of pipelines. It investigates how the boundary conditions of the pipeline model influence stress and examines the sensitivity of failure pressure to corrosion defect parameters. A nonlinear regression equation has been developed from a dataset obtained through simulation experiments to predict the failure pressure of corroded pipelines. To validate the effects of corrosion defect parameters on failure pressure, a hydrostatic test platform for an API 5L X65 pipeline with corrosion defects was established to measure stress levels and failure pressures across varying corrosion defects. The study reveals that failure pressure is negatively correlated with corrosion length and depth, while positively correlated with corrosion width. Among these parameters, corrosion depth exerts a more significant influence on the pipeline's failure pressure than corrosion length and width. Within the range of corrosion defect parameters examined, the maximum deviation of the prediction equation's results from the simulation results is 8.71%, with an average deviation of 5.81%. The standard deviation of the fitted residuals is 0.01837. Additionally, the maximum deviation between the predicted results and experimental measurements is 8.39%, with an average deviation of 7.77%. The strong agreement between the predicted results from the equation and the actual measured data underscores the effectiveness of the nonlinear regression equation.
Surface Stress Analysis of Internally Corroded Pipes under External Pressure

Abstract:Corrosion often leads to the failure of transporting pipelines. The surface stresses on the corroded pipes are related to the failure pressure. In this paper, a double circular arc (DCA) model is developed to calculate the surface stress of the internal corroded pipes under external pressure. In addition, a critical corrosion ratio and a critical thickness-to-diameter ratio are presented to determine the location of the maximum stress. Based on the stress function method and bipolar coordinates, an analytical solution of the DCA model was obtained. And then the stress distributions on the internal and external surfaces of the corroded pipes were determined. Next, the equivalent and hoop stresses at several locations in the cross section of the corroded pipes were discussed. The calculated results were validated using finite element method (FEM). Results show that the maximum stresses vary from the internal surface to the external surface with the increase of the corrosion ratio or the thickness-to-diameter ratio. Our research provides a benchmark for approximate solutions to predict the failure pressure and assess the integrity of the corroded pipelines.

Abstract:Dent-corrosion defects are a typical combination of defects and pose a significant threat to the safety and integrity of energy pipelines. In general, the corrosion features rather than dents are considered the primary factor of fitness-for-service of pipelines containing a dent-corrosion defect. In this work, a finite element (FE) based model was developed to predict the failure pressure of pipelines containing a dent-corrosion defect and investigate its dominant factor. Parametric analysis results demonstrated that the presence of dents reduced the failure pressure of corresponding pipelines containing a single corrosion defect. The dominant factor of the failure pressure changed from corrosion feature to dent feature if (1) an increase in dent depth and a decrease in the pipe diameter-to-thickness ratio, (2) exceeding the critical dent depth by 8% of diameter (D), and (3) below the critical indentation radius by 10%D. Longitudinal dent gave a significant reduction of the failure pressure, making dent feature a dominant factor; Oppositely, the effect of the circumferential dent was marginal.

Abstract:Corrosion pits often appear in steel pipelines under saline or marine immersion conditions and lead to potential risk. In this paper, a double circular arc (DCA) model is firstly established to simulate the pipelines containing an isolated corrosion pit. Then, a burst pressure predictive equation of the pipelines with an isolated pit is provided. Next, the finite element method (FEM) is adopted to verify the accuracy of predictive equation. In the end, comparisons and discussions between the predictive equation and FEM are conducted. The results indicated that undetectable corrosion pits can largely decrease the ultimate carrying capability of pipelines. Furthermore, the DCA model is feasible to simulate the burst behavior of pipelines with an isolated corrosion pit. In addition, compared to FEM, the errors of burst pressure equation are less than 10% for the pipes with an isolated corrosion pit. Finally, accurately predicting the burst pressure and timely repair or replacement of the pipelines with pits can avoid drastic consequences. We provide a novel idea to predict the burst pressure of pipelines with group pits. It is rewarding to study the burst behavior of pitting pipelines and assess the integrity of pipelines.
Double Circular Arc Model Based on Average Shear Stress Yield Criterion and Its Application in the Corroded Pipe Burst

Abstract:Corrosion is one of the major causes of damage in offshore and onshore pipes. Based on the double circular arc (DCA) model and the average shear stress yield (ASSY) criterion for isotropic hardening materials, a new burst pressure equation for corroded pipes is developed in this paper. The ASSY criterion is a weighted average of the maximum shear stress and the octahedral shear stress and it is adopted to predict the burst pressure of the pipelines with corrosion defects. The accuracy of our predictive equations is validated respectively by both the ideal and corroded pipes. Firstly, the burst pressure equation of a corroded pipe is degraded into an ideal pipe's. Then we compare the calculated results with the full-scale experimental data. The calculated results are consistent with the experimental data for the ideal pipes. Again, we make a comparison of the predicted burst pressures of corroded pipes with the ones from the elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) and the experiment. The calculated results show a good agreement with the numerical calculations and experimental data for the corroded pipes. Our research reveals that the corrosion defects can decrease the burst pressure for a pipe; the yield criterion and the strain hardening exponent are crucial to accurately capture the burst pressure. Our research is beneficial to evaluate the integrity of the corroded pipes.
Mechanical model and probability analysis of buried pipelines failure under uniform corrosion

Abstract:To resolve the failure problems for the buried oil and gas pipelines under the combined effect of soil corrosion and complex stress induced by external loads, a failure prediction model was developed by combining longitudinal and circumferential mechanical characteristics of pipes with the corrosion model. First order second moment (FOSM) was used to perform the probabilistic analysis, taking the uncertainty of the model and parameters into consideration. Then the sensitivity analysis of the important parameters such as inner pressure, residual stresses and corrosion parameters were given. Results showed that it was suitable to adopting the FOSM to calculate the failure probability, because the value by the FOSM agreed well with the one by the Monte-Carlo method (MC). The reliability decreased with the increased mean values and variances of the inner pressure and residual stresses. The residual stresses, which were released with corrosion, had smaller influence on the pipe failure in the late stage. The failure probability of pipes increased fast when used 10-20 years, but slowed down after then because of the self inhibition of corrosion process. The inner pressure, residual stresses, pipe thickness and corrosion parameters have large influence on the failure probability for the buried oil and gas pipes. The corrosion is one of the most important factors contributing to the pipe failure. Reducing corrosion pit depth growth by using the corrosion control technique can be the most effective way to decelerate the breakage growth rate and extend the service life.

Abstract:Pipelines are the fifth type of transportation, which has the highest efficiency and the least environmental damage for gas or oil transmission. Recently, the pipeline failures due to corrosion defects have attracted people's attention in maintaining pipeline integrity. Based on the double circular arc (DCA) model and elastic-plastic theory, an analytical solution of the corroded pipelines under internal and external pressures was obtained. And then, a new burst pressure equation of the corroded pipelines with high strength was further provided according to the von Mises criterion and previous equations. Compared with previous equations, this equation greatly extends the application scope and increases the calculation accuracy. The accuracy of our equation is validated by comparing with the full-scale experimental data. The effects of the thickness to diameter ratio, corrosion ratio and yield strength on the burst pressure are carefully investigated. The results reveal that when the thickness to diameter ratio is less than 0.1, the calculated results show a good agreement with the experimental data for the corroded and high strength pipes. Our research can provide a foundation for replacing the corroded pipelines at the bottom of the sea. In addition, our research is beneficial for the engineering design and integrity assessment of oil and gas pipelines.

Abstract:This paper presents a methodology for evaluating fitness-for-service (i.e., safety, serviceability, and reliability) of corroded metal pipelines. A model for predicting pipe failure pressure is developed from a series of nonlinear finite-element analyses of metal pipes of different diameters and wall thicknesses with corrosion defects of different sizes and depths. The strength limit state (burst) and service limit states (yield and leakage) both are investigated in the pipe fitness-for-service analyses. Uncertainties associated with in situ measurement of flaw size, pipe geometry, pipe material properties, operating pressures, and corrosion in exposure environments are considered in a time-dependent reliability analysis of pipe performance over a service life of 50 years. Engineering variables that have the most significant impact on the reliability of a corroded pipe are identified through Monte Carlo-based sensitivity studies. Finally, a set of simple reliability-based evaluation tools are presented for assessing pipeline safety. The procedure and the results presented in this paper can be used to support decisions related to continued safe operation of pipes, optimal pipe inspection intervals, and maintenance schedules. Abstract:Burst capacity assessment at a corrosion defect of pipe elbows subjected to internal pressure is essential for oil/gas pipeline integrity management. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear finite element (FE) model validated by burst tests was developed to investigate the effect of corrosion defects on the burst capacity of X80 pipe elbows. Subsequently, the effects of corrosion geometry (i.e. depth, length, and width of the defect) on the pipe burst pressure were determined. Based on the Goodall model of intact pipe elbows, a reasonable mathematical expression for the failure pressure prediction formula for corroded pipelines under external loads was derived by introducing a defect geometry factor function. Then, combined with a series of FE cases, a new prediction model of burst pressure for corroded pipe elbows experiencing internal pressure was developed. Finally, the accuracy and reliability of the proposed model were verified using extensive parametric FE analysis. The results show that the average error of failure pressure between the proposed model and FEM was only 3.63% for 291 cases. Moreover, the prediction accuracy was better than other well-known models. Therefore, the proposed model can be widely used in the safety assessment of corroded elbows of oil/gas pipelines.

Abstract:This paper presents analytical and numerical researches on the buckling or collapse of offshore pipelines under external hydrostatic pressure. Firstly the case of homogeneous ring model is investigated followed by a detailed study on corroded rings. The elastic-plastic collapse pressure could be treated as the least root of an elementary function. We prove that collapse pressure is a strictly increasing function of mode number in this paper and present some interesting structures of the roots. Partially corroded ring is parametrized by corrosion depth and angle extent. A comprehensive comparison shows that plasticity should not be neglected when the ring is thick-walled. Moreover, a study on large deflection deformation of 3D cylindrical shells quasi-statically dented under constant external pressure is carried out theoretically and numerically. The buckle propagation pressure is shown to be a meaningful value to normalize external pressure. This paper serves to enhance the understanding of destabilizing effect of external pressure mainly applicable and relevant to subsea offshore industry. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
On the Collapse Failure of Dented Pipes under Bending Moment and External Pressure

Abstract:This paper presents the numerical research on the collapse failure of dented subsea pipelines under bending moment and external pressure. Firstly, the case of pure bending moment is studied and shows that the increase of initial denting displacement and ratio of diameter to thickness leads to decreased critical moment. Then the external pressure is imposed, and it is concluded that the non-dimensionalized critical bending moment decreases with the increase of the pre-applied external pressure and the initial denting displacement. If the bending moment is applied to the dented pipe before the external pressure, the collapse pressure would decrease to some extent. This paper is expected to provide the security guidelines to dented pipes under bending moment and external pressure.

Abstract:Corrosion assessment analysis and failure pressure prediction of pipelines with corrosion defects are essential in the integrity assessment of transmission pipelines. A series of semi-empirical corrosion criteria have been proposed to predict the failure pressure. However, the influence of defect width on the failure pressure is not considered in theory. In this paper, an improved model for the end-capped pipe with infinite length defect is developed based on plastic instability theory and finite strain theory, by considering the corrosion depth and width. The constitutive behavior of the pipe steel material is characterized by a power-law hardening stress-strain curve. Thus, two theoretical solutions are developed based on von Mises and Tresca criteria, by considering the strain hardening effect. Finite element analysis and sixty-one full-scale burst tests for each pipe with a single longitudinal defect are performed to validate and define the application scope of these new solutions. The results show that the proposed model based on von Mises criterion makes the best prediction and is suitable for the cases of defect length longer than 20 D t .

Abstract:In this work, collapse of subsea pipelines subjected to external pressure which are dented by foreign objects is investigated through numerical method. The effect of diameter-to-thickness ratio D/t and ovalization caused by denting Δ om on the collapse pressure is discussed. Of particular concern is the effect of indenter's shape on the collapse pressure. The collapse behavior between pipelines dented by spherical and ellipsoidal indenters are compared. Finally, an empirical equation is proposed to predict the collapse pressure of dented pipelines under external pressure.

Abstract:This study presents, for the first time, the mechanical behavior of API 5L pipeline steels X42, X52, X60, X70, X80, and X100 with external and internal corrosion defects as well as a combination of both defects that has been named external–internal corrosion defects. The conventional methods to predict failure pressure in corroded pipes, such as B31G, RSTRENG-1, SHELL, DNV-99, PCORRC, and FITNET FFS, have also been discussed in this article. In addition, pipeline failure pressure has been estimated using the finite element method, considering that it is the best approach to calculate actual failure pressure. The external and internal corrosion defect investigated in this research manifests as a rectangular shape with spherical ends at the edges. When the external–internal corrosion defect appears, failure pressure data decrease dramatically because of severe damage. This is due to the decrease in the ligament (effective area) caused by the corrosion defect. To have a good estimation of the pipeline failure pressure with an external–internal corrosion defect, DNV-99 method can be used with acceptable certainty.

Abstract:Corrosion defect on pipelines shows a time-dependent growth in service environments. Prediction of corrosion defect growth and failure pressure of corroded pipelines as a function of time has remained a big challenge to industry. In this work, a finite element (FE)-based model was developed to quantify 3-dimensional (3-D) growth of a corrosion defect on an X100 steel pipe and predict the failure pressure as a function of time by considering a mechano-electrochemical (M-E) interaction. Parametric effects, including internal pressure, axial tensile stress and initial defect length, were investigated. Distributions of von Mises stress and anodic current density (i.e., corrosion rate) at the corrosion defect were determined. Results demonstrated that the growth rate of the corrosion defect followed the order of defect depth > defect length > defect width. With increased stresses resulted from internal pressure and axial tensile loading, the maximum defect depth and defect length increased apparently, but the defect width changed slightly. For example, the defect length increased by 11% and 16% after 10 years of service at internal pressures of 18 MPa and 26 MPa, respectively, and the defect depth increased by 27% and 34% correspondingly. However, the corrosion width increase maintained at about 22% when the internal pressure increased from 18 MPa to 26 MPa. As the corrosion defect grew with time, the failure pressure of the pipeline decreased. It is expected that, upon further validation by substantial data from field and the laboratory, the developed model could contribute to improved pipeline integrity management.

Abstract:<p>Dent is one of the most common defects in mechanical damage of oil and gas pipelines. Most of the dents generated during pipeline construction are unconstrained dents, and rebound will occur during service of the pipeline. The dent defect can be considered as ductile damage. Taking X52 steel pipe as the research object, the rebound process of unconstrained dents in service is numerically simulated. Based on the Oyane ductile fracture criterion, the ductile damage degree of dented pipes affected by multiple factors was studied. The change of the ductile damage integral value with the change of parameters during each loading process of the pipeline and the relationship between the pipeline damage and the depth of the dent were analyzed. The results show that the analysis results based on the ductile damage model are in accordance with the conclusions of the existing research, and the ductile damage integral value of the pipeline changes with the depth of the dent in a reasonable law, which shows that the ductile fracture criterion can be used for the safety evaluation of dented pipeline.</p>

Abstract:Natural gas pipeline leaks may cause considerable damage to people, properties, and the surrounding environment. This study investigates a dent leak in a gas pipeline in China that has operated for six years. The failure pipe section meets American Petroleum Institute (API) specification 5L-2012 standard for carbon steel pipelines. The cause of leakage is evaluated not only through visual examination, micromorphology observation, structural deformation analysis, and residual stress measure of the dented region near the leak point of the pipe body, but also through finite element analysis on the deformation and stress of the pipe under different loads. The dent formation is related to rocks during pipeline laying. Under the combined effect of external load and internal pressure, the maximum equivalent stresses of the dented edge at the outer wall, bulge top of the inner wall, and dented edge of the inner wall are greater than the yield stress of the material. Moreover, micro-crack formation occurs due to the maximum deformation at the bottom of the dent and the maximum equivalent stress on top of the inner surface bulge. Under alternating stress, microcracks gradually expand until they penetrate the wall thickness, and thereby cause pipeline leakages.

Abstract:Pipelines used to transport oil and gas products are often subjected to external forces during its construction or operation, which can result in the formation of dents in the pipe. Various pipeline codes have stipulations on how a dent's severity can be ascertained in order to prioritize repairs. The most prominent being the depth-based criterion, which determines the severity of a dent by its depth. The depth-based criterion fails to consider the fact that the geometry of the dent can result in high strain concentration and eventually lead to integrity issues at the dented region. Alternatively, the strains associated with the dent can be an indicator of the dent's severity. Nonmandatory codified equations are available for evaluating the strains at the dented region of the pipe. The current implementation of these equations might fail to capture the strains that are not aligned with the most severe deformation profile of the dent and as such a global view of the strain distribution of the dented profile would be more informative as per the localized strain distribution. The study presented herein is the implementation of ASME B31.8 formulations together with the suggested modifications to evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) strain state of the dented pipe. The strain distributions obtained are compared against the strains predicted by finite element analysis (FEA) model. The correlation in the predicted strains indicates the possibility of the rapid and concise strain based characterization of dented pipes with the proposed technique.
Accurate Modeling and Safety Evaluation of Dented Pipeline with Internal Pressure Based on Reverse Modeling Technique

Abstract:As a common form for pipeline geometric defects, dents can induce the local stress concentration of the pipeline, which would result in the debilitation of the bearing capacity and bring huge safety hazards. In this paper, the accurate surface profiles of dented pipeline are acquired based on the 3D scanning technology and deformation detection technology, respectively. Then, the dented pipeline models are constructed by the reverse modeling technique, and the stress distribution characteristics of the dented pipeline in the operation condition are simulated using ABAQUS. The maximum von Mises stresses of a dented pipeline obtained from two proposed modeling techniques are basically consistent. However, the deformation detection technology can effectively avoid the excavation work for buried pipelines. Therefore, the reverse modeling technique based on the deformation detection technology has strong feasibility in practical projects and significant application value in the safety assessment of submarine pipelines, where excavation work is impractical.
