Abstract:This study investigated the corrosion behavior of 9Cr ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steel with varying silicon contents when exposed to static lead-bismuth eutectic at temperatures between 450 °C and 550 °C. Except for samples corroded at 450 °C for 500 h, which developed a bilayer consisting of magnetite layer and Fe-Cr spinel layer, the oxide scale at 450 °C and 500 °C consists of exterior magnetite layer, Fe-Cr spinel layer, and disorganized internal oxide zone. Most of samples that corroded at 550 °C underwent dissolution corrosion. With the addition of Si, 9Cr F/M steel demonstrated enhanced corrosion resistance to LBE at low temperatures and effectively delaying the onset of dissolution corrosion at 550 °C.

Abstract:A comparison investigation on the oxidation behavior of SIMP and T91steels exposed to oxygen saturated LBE up to 10000 hours at 450°C was conducted. The results show that the surface oxides formed on both steels are mainly composed of a Fe 3 O 4 outer layer and a (Fe,Cr) 3 O 4 inner layer. Under the same conditions, SIMP steel displays a better corrosion resistance than its counterpart, which was attributed to higher Si content in SIMP steel. The Si effect on reducing oxidation rate was discussed by first-principles calculations.

Abstract:The corrosion behaviour of 11Cr1Si ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steel in static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 450-550 °C was investigated. The results show that the oxide layer on 11Cr1Si F/M steel exposed in LBE at 450-550 °C appeared different structural characteristics. The oxide layer on 11Cr1Si F/M steel at 450 °C was composed of an outer Fe 3 O 4 layer on the top of an inner Fe-Cr spinel layer, while the oxide layer at 500 °C and 550 °C consisted of an outer Fe 3 O 4 layer, an inner Fe-Cr spinel layer and the irregular internal oxidation zone. Meanwhile, the thickness of the oxide layer obviously increased with increasing temperature and time. The corresponding corrosion appearances and mechanisms were also discussed.

Abstract:The corrosion resistance of a Si‐containing ferritic/martensitic steel, SIMP, was compared with T91 steel, and austenitic stainless steel 316L in liquid lead‐bismuth eutectic (LBE). The SIMP steel was found to have a higher Si content in the oxide layer than that of T91, while 316L had the highest Cr content in the oxide layer. This explains the different LBE corrosion resistance of the three steels. The degradation of structural materials caused by the corrosion of liquid lead‐bismuth eutectic (LBE), the coolant of lead‐cooled fast reactors (LFRs), has become one of the limiting factors for the development of LFRs. In this study, LFR structural candidates SIMP and T91 ferritic/martensitic steels and 316L austenitic stainless steel were selected to conduct corrosion experiments at different durations (120–1218 h) in oxygen‐saturated liquid LBE at 550°C. It was found that the austenitic stainless steel 316L has the best resistance to LBE corrosion due to its high Cr content, which allows dense Fe–Cr spinel with high Cr content to be generated in oxygen‐containing LBE, slowing down the oxidation rate. However, a certain degree of dissolution corrosion occurred in the early stages of corrosion in 316L steel, which disappeared with the increase of time. The ferritic/martensitic steel SIMP has better oxidation resistance than T91 due to its higher Si content, which results in a more compact inner oxide layer of SIMP steel, thus impeding the diffusion of Fe and O ions more effectively.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution of ferritic/martensitic steels SIMP and T91 in oxygen-saturated liquid LBE at different temperatures (400, 470, 550 and 620°C) has been studied by experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that the SIMP steel offers better oxidation resistance at 400-550°C due to the formation of protective SiO 2 particles and bands. At 620°C, both the SIMP and T91 steels undergo dissolution corrosion with similar dissolved layer thicknesses. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the number of Fe-O pairs decreases with increasing temperatures and the enhanced dissolution of Fe makes the surfaces of the steel difficult to oxidize at 620°C.

Abstract:The corrosion behavior of stressed C-rings made of martensitic steel T91 was investigated through constant strain tests. The specimens with different initial hoop stresses (0 MPa, 150 MPa and 300 MPa) were exposed to static oxygen saturated lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 480 degrees C for 500 h, 1000 h and 1500 h, respectively. The results showed that no crack was found on the outer surface of all the specimens after exposure; and the microscopic analysis showed that the specimens were covered with two oxide layers, which included a magnetite outer layer and a Fe-Cr spinet inner layer. The transformation of spinel into magnetite at the spinel/magnetite interface might be promoted by stress, which increased the difference between the thickness of the inner and outer layers. Moreover, the steel loss was estimated by the observed oxide layers; it increased rapidly when the stress was above 300 MPa, and was about 1.3 times of when the stress was absent. Abstract:<p>This paper reports an attempt to speculate about corrosion resistance of T91 steel to extreme lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) flow pattern. We build a modified dynamic corrosion apparatus permitting assemblages of oxidation, erosion or dissolution attack proceeding together within oxygen-saturated LBE. After corrosion test at 400℃ up to 1000 hours, discrepancies of corrosion performance under various flow patterns were described by diffusion or mass transfer kinetics as well as erosion mechanics. In justification of dense Fe-O layer and cracks across oxide scales detected within typical erosion cavities, we put forward oxide growth stress enhanced by high surface curvature.</p>

Abstract:The effect of silicon contents (4wt%similar to 8wt%) on microstructure of high-silicon austenitic stainless steel ZeCor was investigated by XRD, TEM and indentation deformation. Results show that increasing Si content leads to the phase constitute change of ZeCor alloy: the microstructure is single-phase austenite (gamma phase) in ZeCor-4wt%Si alloy, gamma phase with a small quantity of sigma-phase in ZeCor-6wt%Si alloy, and as for the ZeCor-8wt%Si alloy, the main precipitations are Cr3Ni5Si2 phase and a bit sigma-phases. In addition, the Cr3Ni5Si2 phase has a higher silicon and nickel content than the sigma-phase. The Cr3Ni5Si2 phase with a micro-hardness HV as high as 7840 MPa is a typical hard and brittle phase, and the precipitation of such phase can greatly increase the micro-hardness of the. matrix in the ZeCor-8wt% Si alloy. The strengthening mechanism of. matrix in ZeCor alloy is as follows: the solid solution strengthening is the main strengthening mechanism in ZeCor-6wt% Si alloy, while the solid solution strengthening of Si and the precipitation strengthening of Cr3Ni5Si2 greatly increase the micro-hardness of the. matrix in ZeCor-8wt%Si alloy, and the Cr3Ni5Si2 phases have a great effect.

Abstract:Forming suitable oxide scales on the surface of T91 steel by controlling the oxygen concentration has been considered as an effective method to restrain the liquid metal corrosion of T91 steel exposed to lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). Notably, the successful precondition of this method is that the oxide scales on T91 steel can not be damaged easily, especially in flowing LBE environment. In the present study, laser surface remelting (LSR) treatment is employed to enhance the damage resistance of oxide scales on T91 steel under the flowing (∼3 m/s) oxygen-saturated LBE conditions at 500 °C. The experimental results reveal that although the T91 steel specimens subjected to LSR treatment still process a double-layered oxide scales comprising an outer magnetite layer and an inner Fe-Cr spinel layer, their damage resistance ability is remarkably stronger compared the as-received T91 steel specimens in flowing LBE environment. Further observations indicate that such phenomenon should be ascribed to fewer microstructural defects, such as LBE-filled holes within the oxide scales, resulting from the refined microstructure and high density of dislocations activated in LSR specimens. Accordingly, the possible reasons behind these phenomena were proposed, and a corresponding damage model of oxide scales in flowing LBE condition was established.

Abstract:The Fe 49.7 Cr 18 Mn 1.9 Mo 7.4 W 1.6 B 15.2 C 3.8 Si 2 amorphous coating was deposited on T91 steel substrate by using the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spray technique to enhance the corrosion resistance of T91 stainless steel in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). The corrosion behavior of the T91 steel and coating exposed to oxygen-saturated LBE at 400°C for 500 h was investigated. Results showed that the T91 substrate was severely corroded and covered by a homogeneously distributed dual-layer oxide on the interface contacted to LBE, consisting of an outer magnetite layer and an inner Fe−Cr spinel layer. Meanwhile, the amorphous coating with a high glass transition temperature ( T g = 550°C) and crystallization temperature ( T x = 600°C) exhibited dramatically enhanced thermal stability and corrosion resistance. No visible LBE penetration was observed, although small amounts of Fe 3 O 4 , Cr 2 O 3 , and PbO were found on the coating surface. In addition, the amorphicity and interface bonding of the coating layer remained unchanged after the LBE corrosion. The Fe-based amorphous coating can act as a stable barrier layer in liquid LBE and have great application potential for long-term service in LBE-cooled fast reactors.

Abstract:The key material issue for the commercialization of advanced lead cooled fast reactors and accelerator driven subcritical systems is the compatibility between structural materials and lead based coolants. Structural steel materials need to have excellent corrosion resistance in high-temperature liquid lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy. Aluminum forming austenitic steel (AFA steel) has excellent corrosion resistance in extreme environments due to its ability to form an Al2O3 film on its surface. However, excessively high Ni elements are more easily dissolved or oxidized in LBE compared to Fe and Cr elements. Therefore, this article investigates the effect of reducing Ni element composition (25-Ni steel and 18-Ni steel) on the corrosion resistance of steel in LBE. Surface treatment can to some extent protect the substrate from corrosion, so this article explores whether it has a protective effect on AFA steel in LBE by generating Al 2 O 3 through high-temperature pre oxidation. The morphology and structure of the oxide layer of AFA steel corroded for 600 h in LBE with saturated dissolved oxygen at 550 °C were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and other technologies. The results indicate that the oxide film formed after corrosion of 18-Ni steel is thinner than that of 25-Ni steel. Performing high-temperature pre oxidation is beneficial for forming a protective Al 2 O 3 oxide film on the surface of the sample, thereby reducing the thickness of the oxide layer and improving the material's LBE corrosion resistance. The reduction in thickness of the oxide layer generated after pre oxidation of 18-Ni steel is greater than that of 25-Ni steel, so the anti-corrosion effect of 18-Ni steel after pre oxidation is better than that of 25-Ni steel.

Abstract:Two kinds of experimental ferritic/martensitic steels (HT-9) with different Si contents were designed for the fourth-generation advanced nuclear reactor cladding material. The effects of Si content and tempering temperature on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of these HT-9 steel were studied. The microstructure of experimental steels after quenching and tempering were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM); the mechanical properties were investigated by means of tensile test, Charpy impact test, and hardness test. The microscopic mechanism of how the microstructural evolution influences mechanical properties was also discussed. Both XRD and TEM results showed that no residual austenite was detected after heat treatment. The results of mechanical tests showed that the yield strength, tensile strength, and plasticity of the experimental steels with 0.42% (% in mass) Si are higher than that with 0.19% Si, whereas hardness and toughness did not change much; when tempered at 760 degrees C, the strength and hardness of the experimental steels decreased slightly compared with those tempered at 710 degrees C, whereas plasticity and toughness increased. Further analysis showed that after quenching at 1050 degrees C for 1 h and tempering at 760 degrees C for 1.5 h, the comprehensive mechanical properties of the 0.42% Si experimental steel are the best compared with other experimental steels.

Abstract:The long-term corrosion behaviors of four variants of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) iron-based alloys in the stagnant oxygen-saturated lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 550 °C were studied herein. The effects of silicon and aluminum content on the thickness, morphology and composition of the oxide scale were explored with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of 1.5 wt% silicon is not able to contribute to forming a protective external silicon oxide film on the surface of aluminum-free ODS iron-based alloy, while the addition of aluminum promotes the formation of a thin and continuous alumina oxide scale. In the meantime, an appropriate amount of silicon becomes the heterogeneous nucleation site for alumina during the initial stage of oxidation, giving rise to the rapid formation of a protective alumina scale. However, excessive silicon has a negative impact on the formation of continuous alumina scale, because it may compete with aluminum to absorb more oxygen. The result of oxidation kinetics in ODS iron-based alloy shows that the parabolic rate constant of the alumina oxide scale is 3–4 orders of magnitude lower than that of the scale mainly composed of iron and chromium oxide.

Abstract:This study investigated corrosion of T91 in supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) with impurity of 100 ppm O2, SO2 or H2S at 550 ℃ and 15 MPa. O2 slightly increased mass gain of corroded T91, and the corrosion kinetics both in pure sCO2 and in sCO2 with O2 impurity followed parabolic law. Fe2O3 was formed in outer corrosion layer due to enhanced partial pressure of oxygen. SO2 or H2S remarkably exacerbated T91 corrosion. For test in sCO2 with SO2 impurity, outer corrosion product was magnetite, and the inner was composed of Fe-Cr spinel and FeS, different from that in pure sCO2. Addition of H2S caused an external FeS layer and internal Fe-Cr spinel. Introduction of all the three impurities reduced carburization in the underlying alloy substrate.

Abstract:A novel Si-bearing austenitic stainless steel was designed as the cladding material for lead-cooled fast reactors with an operating temperature range of 450 °C–550 °C, and the effects of Si (1.0 wt% - 2.0 wt%) on the creep life and fractured microstructure of material were studied at 550 °C and 650 °C. Results show that the addition of Si increased the stress rupture life of steel at 550 °C whereas brought in an opposite effect at 650 °C, which was closely related to the precipitation behavior of σ phase at these two temperatures during creep. At 550 °C the precipitation of σ phase was quite slow, but it was substantially accelerated at 650 °C. Since the experimental materials used in this work were in a cold worked state, so deformation twins existed and they were discovered to be able to promote the nucleation and growth of σ phase on the grain boundaries. With the increase of Si content at 550 °C, σ phase became larger in quantity and denser in distribution on the grain boundary, which improved the anti-cracking ability of grain boundary and enhanced the creep life of material. However, at 650 °C, σ particles apparently coarsened and congregated on the grain boundary under thermal activation, leading to an evident drop in the stress rupture property of steel.

Abstract:Ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steel is considered as one of the most promising cladding materials for Lead-cooling fast reactors due to its favorable mechanical properties and radiation resistance. Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process can further improve the mechanical properties of the F/M steels compared to conventional normalizing and tempering or quenching and tempering process. In this study, the Q&P process was employed to 9Cr F/M steels with different Si content (0, 0.4, 0.7, 1 wt.%), and the effect of Si content on their microstructure and mechanical properties was studied. The microstructure was characterized through SEM, EBSD, and TEM. The mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures (500, 600, 700 °C) were tested. The results indicated that the addition of Si (0 to 1 wt.%) leads to a slight decrease in the ultimate tensile strength (UTS)/yield strength (YS) of the F/M steel at room temperature from 1328.3/986.5 MPa to 1300.7/950.7 MPa, respectively. Meanwhile, the fracture elongation (FE) maintains at about 16%. Additionally, as the Si content increases from 0 to 1 wt.%, the UTS and YS of the samples at elevated temperatures show a similar trend. However, the FE of the samples initially increases at 500 °C, noticeably decreases at 600 °C, and eventually rises at 700 °C. Only the FE at 600 °C was lower compared to that at room temperature. Furthermore, the UTS and YS of the samples decrease with increasing temperature. Although Si addition brings a higher solid solution strengthening effect, it is offset by the coarsening of block size and the formation of δ-ferrite. As a result, a little change in the strength of the steel is obtained.

Abstract:The effect of Si content on the microstructures and growth kinetics of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) formed during the initial interfacial reaction (<10 s) between solid steel and liquid aluminum was investigated by a thermophysical simulation method. The influence of Si addition on interfacial mechanical properties was revealed by a high-frequency induction brazing. The results showed that IMCs layers mainly consisted of η-Fe2Al5 and θ-Fe4Al13. The addition of Si reduced the thickness of the IMCs layer. The growth of the η phase was governed by the diffusion process when adding 2 wt.% Si to the aluminum melt. When 5 wt.% or 8 wt.% Si was added to aluminum, the growth was governed by both the diffusion process and interfacial reaction, and ternary phase τ1/τ9-(Al,Si)5Fe3 was formed in the η phase. The apparent activation energies of the η phase decreased gradually with increasing Si content. The joint with pure aluminum metal had the highest tensile strength and impact energy.

Abstract:The effect on the corrosion resistance of adding 0.15 wt.% silicon to a Fe-Cr alloy was examined at 1173 K in an H2/Ar atmosphere containing 0.7% water vapour for 24 h. The oxide scales formed on the Fe-Cr alloys with and without silicon addition consisted of chromia. Furthermore, the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of small distinct silica particles near the alloy/chromia interface. The amount of silicon added to the iron-chromium alloy appeared to be insufficient to form a continuous silica layer beneath the chromia scale under the present experimental conditions. Although the silica particles did not form a continuous silica layer beneath the chromia scale, the growth rate of the chromia scale decreased due to addition of silicon. Different oxidation mechanisms are proposed and discussed in order to explain the reduced growth rate of the chromia scale after the addition of silicon to the alloy.
