Abstract:This study introduces a novel ice lithography system integrated with a low-vibration micro-machined Joule-Thomson cooler. Ice lithography is an eco-friendly method for high-resolution nanofabrication on delicate substrates and requires to operate below 130 K in the vacuum of a microscope chamber. Previously, liquid nitrogen rather than cryocoolers was used to cool the system due to its low vibration, but it is both bulky and costly. To overcome these challenges, this study employs a low-vibration micro-machined cooler in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for ice lithography. The design and methodology of the system are described in detail. The results show that the substrate can reach a temperature of 105 K within 30 minutes with a measured mechanical vibration of less than 10 nm, enabling high-resolution nanofabrication. As proof of concept, the system successfully fabricates nanoscale patterns on a silicon wafer. This low-vibration cooling system has great potential for use in cryogenic electron microscopes (cryo-EMs) in the future.

Abstract:Benefiting from the developments in micromachining technologies, Joule–Thomson (JT) cryogenic coolers have been miniaturized for cooling cold electronics based either on semiconductor, superconductor, or a combination of the two. The performance of these electronics is affected not only by temperature but also by temperature stability; however, many problems related to the temperature stability of JT microcoolers have not been solved. In this study, we investigate experimentally the performance of a JT microcooler operating with pure nitrogen gas, nitrogen/methane mixture, and nitrogen/ethylene mixture. The cool-down curves and the cooling powers of the microcooler operating with the three types of working fluids between 0.1 MPa and 6.0 MPa are presented. Based on the cooling power measurements, the effect of heat load on the temperature stability of the microcooler is discussed. The microcooler operating with nitrogen/ethylene mixture demonstrates the best temperature stability due to its characteristics of vapor–liquid–liquid equilibrium. Besides the properties of the working fluids, the degree of change in mass-flow rate of the microcooler also affects the temperature stability. This study is conducted to promote the widespread use of cryogenic electronics that are sensitive to the temperature fluctuation.

Abstract:In vacuo cryogenic environments are ideal for applications requiring both low temperatures and extremely low particle densities. This enables reaching long storage and coherence times, for example, in ion traps, essential requirements for experiments with highly charged ions, quantum computation, and optical clocks. We have developed a novel cryostat continuously refrigerated with a pulse-tube cryocooler and providing the lowest vibration level reported for such a closed-cycle system with 1 W cooling power for a <5 K experiment. A decoupling system suppresses vibrations from the cryocooler by three orders of magnitude down to a level of 10 nm peak amplitudes in the horizontal plane. Heat loads of about 40 W (at 45 K) and 1 W (at 4 K) are transferred from an experimental chamber, mounted on an optical table, to the cryocooler through a vacuum-insulated massive 120 kg inertial copper pendulum. The 1.4 m long pendulum allows installation of the cryocooler in a separate, acoustically isolated machine room. At the experimental chamber, we measured the residual vibrations using an interferometric setup. The positioning of the 4 K elements is reproduced to better than a few micrometer after a full thermal cycle to room temperature. Extreme high vacuum on the 10−15 mbar level is achieved. In collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, such a setup is now in operation at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt for a next-generation optical clock experiment using highly charged ions.

Abstract:Atomic-resolution cryogenic scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM) has provided a path to probing the microscopic nature of select low-temperature phases in quantum materials. Expanding cryo-STEM techniques to broadly tunable temperatures will give access to the rich temperature-dependent phase diagrams of these materials. With existing cryo-holders, however, variations in sample temperature significantly disrupt the thermal equilibrium of the system, resulting in large-scale sample drift. The ability to tune temperature without negatively impacting the overall instrument stability is crucial, particularly for high-resolution experiments. Here, we test a new side-entry continuously variable temperature dual-tilt cryo-holder which integrates liquid nitrogen cooling with a 6-pin MEMS sample heater to overcome some of these experimental challenges. We measure consistently low drift rates of 0.3-0.4 Angstrom/s and demonstrate atomic-resolution cryo-STEM imaging across a continuously variable temperature range from ~100 K to well above room temperature. We conduct additional drift stability measurements across several commercial sample stages and discuss implications for further developments of ultra-stable, flexible cryo-stages.

Abstract:The range of temperature measurements have been significantly extended for an existing space environment simulation test chamber used in the study of electron emission, sample charging and discharge, electrostatic discharge and arcing, electron transport, and luminescence of spacecraft materials. This was accomplished by incorporating a new two-stage, closed-cycle helium cryostat which has an extended sample temperature range from to , with long-term controlled stability of . The system was designed to maintain compatibility with an existing ultrahigh vacuum chamber (base pressure ) that can simulate diverse space environments. These existing capabilities include controllable vacuum and ambient neutral gases conditions , electron fluxes (5-30-keV monoenergetic, focused, and pulsed sources over 10-4-1010 nA-cm-2), ion fluxes ( monoenergetic sources for inert and reactive gases with pulsing capabilities), and photon irradiation (numerous continuous and pulsed monochromated and broad band IR/VIS/UV [0.5-7 eV] sources). The new sample mount accommodates one to four samples of 1-2.5-cm diameter in a low-temperature carousel, which allows rapid sample exchange and controlled exposure of the individual samples. Custom hemispherical grid retarding field analyzer and Faraday cup detectors, custom high speed, high-sensitivity electronics, and charge neutralization capabilities used with , , and electrons/pulse pulsed-beam sources permit high-accuracy electron emission measurements of extreme insulators with minimal charging effects. In situ monitoring of surface voltage, arcing, and luminescence (250-5000 nm) have recently been added.

Abstract:Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy has revolutionized structural biology and materials science, but achieving temperatures below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen remains a long-standing aspiration. We introduce an ultra-cold liquid helium transmission electron microscope specimen holder, featuring continuous cryogen flow and vibration decoupling. This instrument is compatible with modern aberration-corrected microscopes and achieves sub-25 K base temperature, ${\pm}$2 mK thermal stability over many hours, and atomic resolution--setting the stage for a new era of cryogenic electron microscopy.

Abstract:Pulse-tube based dilution refrigerators are massively employed in low temperature physics. They allow to reduce the running costs and to be operated with unprecedented easiness. However, the main drawback of this technology is the mechanical vibrations induced by the pulse-tube cryocooler. These perturbations can cause extra-noises drastically affecting the detector performance. In this paper, we propose a solution to mitigate the impact of these vibrations by mounting the detectors in an elastic-pendulum based suspended tower. Based on vibration modeling and experimental tests, we show that the vibration levels are attenuated by up to two orders of magnitude at most frequencies, especially above $\sim20$ Hz, for both vertical and radial directions. Thanks to this passive isolation solution, vibration levels, both along vertical and radial directions, below 1 $\mu\textrm{g/}\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ in the frequency range [1-1000] Hz are obtained. This provides a convenient environment to test the ultimate performance of low temperature detectors. As a result, we report an improvement by one to two orders of magnitude on the noise levels of massive cryogenic bolometers, leading to thermal energy resolutions improved by a factor 5 to 40. Finally, we conclude that the energy resolution of our cryogenic bolometers are no longer limited from any residual vibrations, hence allowing the perspective of further improving our bolometer performance in the context of low-mass dark matter searches and neutrino physics applications.

An Ultra-High Vacuum Scanning Tunneling Microscope with Pulse Tube and Joule-Thomson cooling operating at sub-pm z-noise

Abstract:We describe a compact ultra-high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) system that does not need any external supply of cooling liquids. It achieves temperatures down to 1.5 K and a z-noise down to 300 fmRMS for the frequency range of 0.1 Hz - 5 kHz (feedback loop off). It employs a pulse tube cryocooler (PTC) and a Joule-Thomson (JT) stage inducing only small temperature oscillations at the STM with amplitude below 1 mK. The challenge to combine an effective vibrational decoupling from the PTC with sufficient thermal conduction is tackled by a multipartite approach. We realize a minimal stiffness of the UHV bellows that connect the PTC and the STM chamber. Fine Copper wires mechanically decouple the PTC stages from cooling plates that carry the thermal shields, the JT stage and the STM. Soft springs decouple the STM from the JT stage. Finally, the STM body has an optimized conical shape and is made of the light and stiff material Shapal Hi MSoft such that a strong reduction of low frequency vibrations results for the tunnel junction. The voltage noise in the tunnel junction is 0.12 mV and an RF antenna close to the tunnel junction provides radio frequency excitations up to 40 GHz with amplitudes up to 10 mV.

Abstract:We report a homebuilt ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) rotating sample manipulator with cryogenic cooling. The sample holder is thermally anchored to a built-in cryogenic cold head through flexible copper beryllium strips, permitting continuous sample rotation. A similar contact mechanism is implemented for the electrical wiring to the sample holder for thermometry. The apparatus thus enables continuous sample rotation at regulated cryogenic temperatures in a UHV environment. We discuss the potential applications of this apparatus for cryogenic sputtering.

Abstract:A 1 K closed-cycle cryostat, pre-cooled by a 4 K pulse tube cryocooler, has been developed. The Cryomech PT410 pulse tube cryocooler liquefies helium in a vacuum insulated sleeve at a pressure of ∼1 atm. Liquid helium flows through a JT valve and into a 1 K pot that is evacuated by a vacuum pump. The discharged gas from the vacuum is routed to the top of the sleeve to be liquefied. This design accomplishes closed-cycle 1 K refrigeration and provides continuous cooling below 2 K. Using two XDS10 vacuum pumps and with the JT valve optimized for maximum cooling capacity, the 1 K cooling station can reach a no-load temperature of 1.51 K and provide a capacity of 225 mW at 1.76 K. The temperature oscillations on the 4 K and 1 K cooling stations are ± 3 mK. The cryostat is designed so that there is no direct mechanical contact between the pulse tube cryocooler heat exchangers and the 1 K cooling station. This design feature enables exceptionally low vibration operation at the 1 K cooling station.

Abstract:We report on our design of a scanning gate microscope housed in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator with a base temperature of 15 mK. The recent increase in efficiency of pulse tube cryocoolers has made cryogen-free systems popular in recent years. However, this new style of cryostat presents challenges for performing scanning probe measurements, mainly as a result of the vibrations introduced by the cryocooler. We demonstrate scanning with root-mean-square vibrations of 0.8 nm at 3 K and 2.1 nm at 15 mK in a 1 kHz bandwidth with our design.

Abstract:We developed a new scheme for cryogen-free cooling down to sub-3 K temperature range and ultra-low vibration level. An ultra-high-vacuum cryogen-free scanning probe microscope (SPM) system was built based on the new scheme. Instead of mounting a below-decoupled cryocooler directly onto the system, the new design was realized by integrating a Gifford-McMahon cryocooler into a separate liquefying chamber, providing two-stage heat exchangers in a remote way. About 10 L of helium gas inside the gas handling system was cooled, liquefied in the liquefying chamber, and then transferred to a continuous-flow cryostat on the SPM chamber through an ∼2 m flexible helium transfer line. The exhausted helium gas from the continuous-flow cryostat was then returned to the liquefying chamber for reliquefaction. A base temperature of ∼2.84 K at the scanner sample stage and a temperature fluctuation of almost within ±0.1 mK at 4 K were achieved. The cooling curves, tunneling current noise, variable-temperature test, scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy imaging, and first and second derivatives of I(V) spectra are characterized to verify that the performance of our cryogen-free SPM system is comparable to the bath cryostat-based low-temperature SPM system. This remote liquefaction close-cycle scheme shows conveniency to upgrade the existing bath cryostat-based SPM system, upgradeability of realizing even lower temperature down to sub-1 K range, and great compatibility of other physical environments, such as high magnetic field and optical accesses. We believe that the new scheme could also pave a way for other cryogenic applications requiring low temperature but sensitive to vibration.

Abstract:We have developed low temperature part of an ultra high vacuum scanning probe microscope (UHV-SPM) working at variable temperature within the range from 20 K to 700 K. To achieve the required temperature range, a flow cooling system using cryogenic helium (~5 K) as a coolant was designed. The system consists of a flow cryostat and a flexible low-loss transfer line connecting a Dewar vessel with the flow cryostat. We have also tested liquid nitrogen (~ 77 K) as an alternative low-cost coolant. Using nitrogen, the microscope can operate at temperatures of about 100 K and higher. As the flow of the coolant through the cryostat can cause thermally induced two-phase flow fluctuations resulting in instability in temperatures, preliminary tests were done in order to find ways of avoiding the temperature oscillations and optimising the cooling process.

Cryogen-free modular scanning tunneling microscope operating at 4-K in high magnetic field on a compact ultra-high vacuum platform

Abstract:One of the daunting challenges in modern low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is the difficulty of combining atomic resolution with cryogen free cooling. Further functionality needs, such as ultra-high vacuum (UHV), high magnetic field, and compatibility with {\mu}m-sized samples, pose additional challenges to an already ambitious build. We present the design, construction, and performance of a cryogen free, UHV, low temperature, and high magnetic field system for modular STM operation. An internal vibration isolator reduces vibrations in this system allowing atomic resolution STM imaging while maintaining a low base temperature of ~4K and magnetic fields up to 9T. Samples and tips can be conditioned in-situ utilizing a heating stage, an ion sputtering gun, an e-beam evaporator, a tip treater, and sample exfoliation. In-situ sample and tip exchange and alignment are performed in a connected UHV room temperature stage with optical access. Multisite operation without breaking vacuum is enabled by a unique quick-connect STM head design. A novel low-profile vertical transfer mechanism permits transferring the STM between room temperature and the low temperature cryostat.

Abstract:Pulse tube refrigerators are becoming more common, because they are cost efficient and demand less handling than conventional (wet) refrigerators. However, a downside of a pulse tube system is the vibration level at the cold-head, which is in most designs several micrometers. We implemented vibration isolation techniques which significantly reduced vibration levels at the experiment. These optimizations were necessary for the vibration sensitive Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy experiments (MRFM) at milli-kelvin temperatures for which the cryostat is intended. With these modifications we show atomic resolution STM on graphite. This is promising for scanning probe microscopy applications at very low temperatures.

Abstract:Low-temperature scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) are critical for the study of quantum materials and quantum information science. Due to the rising costs of helium, cryogen-free cryostats have become increasingly desirable. However, they typically suffer from comparatively worse vibrations than cryogen-based systems, necessitating the understanding and mitigation of vibrations for SPM applications. Here we demonstrate the construction of two cryogen-free dilution refrigerator SPMs with minimal modifications to the factory default and we systematically characterize their vibrational performance. We measure the absolute vibrations at the microscope stage with geophones and use both microwave impedance microscopy and a scanning single-electron transistor to independently measure tip-sample vibrations. Additionally, we implement customized filtering and thermal anchoring schemes and characterize the cooling power at the scanning stage and the tip electron temperature. This work serves as a reference to researchers interested in cryogen-free SPMs, as such characterization is not standardized in the literature or available from manufacturers.

Abstract:We have designed and built a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) setup for operation at millikelvin temperatures in ultra high vacuum. A compact cryostat with an integrated dilution refrigerator has been built, that allows measurements at a base temperature of 25 mK in magnetic field up to 7.5 T with low mechanical and electronic noise. The cryostat is not larger than conventional helium bath cryostats (23 and 13 liters of nitrogen and helium respectively), so that the setup does not require a large experimental hall and fits easily into a standard lab space. Mechanical vibrations with running dilution circulation were kept below 300 fm/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ by mechanically decoupling the STM from the cryostat and the pumping system. All electronic input lines were low-pass filtered, reducing the electronic temperature to below 100 mK, as deduced from the quasiparticle peaks of superconducting aluminium. The microscope is optically accessible in the parked position, making sample and tip exchange fast and user-friendly. For measurement the STM is lowered 60 mm down so that the sample ends in the middle of a wet superconducting magnetic coil.

Abstract:We present the design and calibration measurements of a scanning tunneling microscope setup in a 3He ultrahigh-vacuum cryostat operating at 400 mK with a hold time of 10 days. With 2.70 m in height and 4.70 m free space needed for assembly, the cryostat fits in a one-story lab building. The microscope features optical access, an xy table, in situ tip and sample exchange, and enough contacts to facilitate atomic force microscopy in tuning fork operation and simultaneous magneto-transport measurements on the sample. Hence, it enables scanning tunneling spectroscopy on microstructured samples which are tuned into preselected transport regimes. A superconducting magnet provides a perpendicular field of up to 14 T. The vertical noise of the scanning tunneling microscope amounts to 1 pmrms within a 700 Hz bandwidth. Tunneling spectroscopy using one superconducting electrode revealed an energy resolution of 120 mueV. Data on tip-sample Josephson contacts yield an even smaller feature size of 60 mueV, implying that the system operates close to the physical noise limit.

Abstract:We describe the design, commissioning and operation of an ultra-low-vibration closed-cycle cryogenic ion trap apparatus. One hundred lines for low-frequency signals and eight microwave / radio frequency coaxial feed lines offer the possibility of implementing a small-scale ion-trap quantum processor or simulator. With all supply cables attached, more than 1.3 W of cooling power at 5 K is still available for absorbing energy from electrical pulses introduced to control ions. The trap itself is isolated from vibrations induced by the cold head using a helium exchange gas interface. The performance of the vibration isolation system has been characterized using a Michelson interferometer, finding residual vibration amplitudes on the order of 10 nm rms. Trapping of $^9$Be$^+$ ions has been demonstrated using a combination of laser ablation and photoionization.

Abstract:A micromachined Joule-Thomson cryocooler has been designed as a cryostage for ice lithography, which allows high-pressure nitrogen throttling to liquefy and fast cool samples with low vibration. The sample can be cooled down to 99.5 K in 30 min and then heated up to room temperature in 10 min. Compared with previous cooling systems based on liquid nitrogen, the Joule-Thomson cryostage has resulted in a significant 90% reduction in cooling time and a decrease in operating temperature by 30 K. Besides, the nitrogen mass-flow rate beneath the sample remains <20 mg/s to minimize vibration. The measured peak-to-peak amplitude at the minimum temperature is about 5.6 nm. As the first cooler integration within an ice lithography system, this Joule-Thomson cryostage not only enables the exploration of a wider range of ice resists, but also can be applied in kinds of microscopes for helping characterize materials at cryogenic temperatures.
