Abstract:The paper describes the reflected spectra simulation and strain profile reconstruction of the fiber Bragg grating(FBG)with an arbitrary nonuniform applied strain.The reflected spectrum is well simulated with propagation matrix and its modified matrix.Two methods based on layer peeling are presented to reconstruct the arbitrary strain profile.Since the time domain pulse response of FBG is strictly determined by corresponding FBG structure,the strain applied on the front of the FBG can be reconstructed with known reflection spectra,and the strain profile is reconstructed with layer peeling.Two methods reconstruct the strain using the FBG time domain pulse response character of partly truncation and phases,respectively.The strain profile reconstruction can be applied on the measuring and analyzing the nonuniform strain profile of fine construct and stress concentration points.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) has been extensively used in civil infrastructures to assess structural condition and situation. Here, we develop a novel type of mechanical sensing technique using the structural instability of cylindrical cells detected by fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The cylinders are fabricated using a 3D printing technique, which are coiled by the FBG wires to detect the transverse deformation. Structural instability under axial compression is obtained in the experiments and the force-displacement relations are validated by the numerical simulations with satisfactory agreements. The wavelength variation of the FBG, caused by the structural instability, is observed and compared with the predefined threshold. Defining the variation larger than the threshold as "1" and smaller as "0", the pattern recognition algorithm is used to convert the FBG results into binary data, which can, therefore, be analyzed to indicate the structural conditions. In the end, we envision the potential applications of the reported sensing technique, such as wireless sensors for structural health monitoring (SHM) in civil infrastructures.

Abstract:We report a novel micro-fiber Bragg grating (mu FBG) sensor that takes advantage of the degeneracy of stop-band and rapid emergence of spectral modes when an effective phase shift occurs. The phase shift can be enabled by a range of perturbations in a central segment of the grating, including monolayer immobilization of bio-molecules or change in refractive index in the surrounding, thereby constituting the possibility of a highly sensitive sensor with the merit of scalable performance. The use of mu FBG ensures strong evanescent field coupling to the surrounding in order to maximize signal transduction. Simulation results indicate very favorable sensor signal characteristics such as large wavelength shift and sharp reflection dips. A general relation between the peak position within the stop-band and the amount of effective phase shift is also provided, and may generally serve as helpful guideline for FBG sensor design. A typical mu FBG sensor device may detect surface protein/DNA adsorption with limit-of-detection (LOD) as low as 3.3 pg.mm(-2) for surface mass density and 51.8 fg for total mass. Abstract:We get the binary Taylor expansions of the effective refractive index and period of fiber Bragg grating (FBG), verify theoretically that the temperature-strain and strain-temperature cross sensitivities are the same, and make a conclusion that the thermo-optical coefficient and the elasto-optical coefficient are both proportional to the square of the effective refractive index. The calculation equations of temperature and strain are listed, and the method of calculation is expatiated. The wavelengths of FBG under different temperatures and strains are measured, and the cross sensitivity coefficients of temperature-strain and strain-temperature are -1.4743x10(-6) nm/(degrees C.mu epsilon) and -1.3948x10(-6) nm/(mu epsilon.degrees C). We place the FBG hydrostatic leveling instrument on the open-air balcony for one day, monitor the wavelength changes of FBG, and then calculate and get a more accurate solution to the changes of liquid depth in the hydrostatic level instrument. The experimental results show that using the calculation equations of temperature and strain can improve the measurement accuracy of FBG.

Abstract:This study investigates the behaviour of resonant wavelengths of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) inscribed within optically isotropic fibers under transverse loading, both in free and embedded conditions. A numerical-analytical approach is employed, utilizing the finite element method to calculate strain tensor components in the optical fiber core, followed by an analytical determination of resonant wavelengths and reflected FBG spectrum shape. The research demonstrates the influence of the ratio of host material and optical fiber elastic moduli on the birefringence level in FBG area under transversal loading. Based on analytical model of FBG spectrum simulation the discrepancy between analytically calculated and experimentally recorded resonant wavelength shifts in FBG embedded within isotropic material under varying transverse load levels is demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract: This microstructure can be etched into the core of the single mode fibre by photo-inscribing it, and it has a length of a few millimetres. By illuminating the fibre with a UV laser beam and employing a phase mask to create an interference pattern in its core, this is achieved. For a variety of engineering measurements, including temperature, strain, pressure, tilt, displacement, acceleration, load, and the presence of numerous chemical and biological compounds in static and dynamic modes using Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), these sensor elements are deemed outstanding. Mostly, researchers uses FBG to investigate its effectiveness in detecting physical parameters. Some people conduct research using applications and some people conduct research with simulation. For this project, the strain response of the optical FBG sensor is measured using Optiwave software with different parameters. It is shown that the various parameters represent one of the critical parameters in contributing to a high-performance fiber Bragg grating sensor. The simulated fiber gratings with different parameters were analysed and designed by calculating reflection and transmission spectra. Such simulations are based on solving coupled mode equations that describe the interaction of guided modes. It is affirmed that this model system can be used as the simulation results satisfy the previous research

Abstract:This paper reports the birefringence effects on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in sensors, optical communications systems, and devices. We have studied and analyzed the optical and mechanical property changes of FBG when the grating zone is subjected to a static transverse load in the case of plane strain and stress. The results presented for plane strain confirm the calculations established in previous research work. We extended these calculations for plane stress and used coupled-mode theory to deduce the reflection spectra of the disturbed FBG. Results were in good agreement with previous published results for plane strain. The simulated results show that the Bragg reflection wavelength changes for the x-polarization and the y-polarization are much more significant for plane stress than for plane strain. Moreover, the Bragg reflection wavelength variation is much more important for x-polarization than for y-polarization for both plane strain and plane stress. This research holds implications for the improved integration of these devices into smart structures and materials as well as optical communications systems and devices.

Abstract:The Z domain model of $pi $ -phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) is developed. The developed mathematical model is used for the evaluation of spectral response. The transmission response of PS-FBG of length 10 mm is determined and the spectral characteristic is found to be in very close agreement with previously published result. The transmission characteristics are examined when the position of phase-shift is not exactly at the center of the grating. The transmission response of a grating with multiple phase shifts is also investigated using the Z domain analysis. Measurement of strain with the help of single phase-shift grating sensors in a cantilever beam composed of epoxy resin is proposed. Strain developed at different positions across the beam can be measured simultaneously from the Bragg wavelength shifts of the array of in-fiber phase shifted gratings bonded to the beam. The PS-FBG sensors offer a much higher resolution and detection in measurement of strain perturbations compared to the FBG sensors. The superior detection is due to the extremely narrow reflection notch of 22.83 pm of PS-FBG sensor which is reduced by a factor of around 19.52 compared to the bandwidth of the reflected light from a FBG of same length.

Abstract:A methodology for evaluating the response of embedded fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors in composite structures based on the strain in a host material is introduced. In applications of embedded FBG sensors as strain sensing devices, it is generally assumed that the strain experienced in a fibre core is the same as the one measured in the host material. The FBG sensor is usually calibrated by a strain gauge through a tensile test, centred on obtaining the relationship between the surface strain in the host material and the corresponding Bragg wavelength shift obtained from the FBG sensor. However, such a calibration result can only be valid for uniform strain measurement. When the strain distribution along a grating is non-uniform, average strain measured by the strain gauge cannot truly reflect the in-fibre strain of the FBG sensor. Indeed, the peak in the reflection spectrum becomes broad, may even split into multiple peaks, in sharp contrast with a single sharp peak found in the case of the uniform strain measurement. In this paper, a strain transfer mechanism of optical fibre embedded composite structure is employed to estimate the non-uniform strain distribution in the fibre core. This in-fibre strain distribution is then utilized to simulate the response of the FBG sensor based on a transfer-matrix formulation. Validation of the proposed method is preceded by comparing the reflection spectra obtained from the simulations with those obtained from experiments.

Abstract:Adaptive simulated annealing algorithm used for determining the strain profile along a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) from its reflection spectrum has been demonstrated. By combining the matrix method for calculating the reflection spectrum of a FBG and the adaptive simulated annealing technique, we obtain a new method for the distributed sensing. The numerical simulations show good agreements between the original and the reconstructed strain profiles.

Abstract:In this paper, the birefringence effects on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) written into standard single mode fiber under transverse load are analyzed. The evolutions of states of polarization (SOPs) of transmitted light in linear birefringence gratings are studied. We demonstrate that the first normalized Stokes parameter (s(1)) of the transmitted light in FBG has monotonous relationship with linear birefringence induced by transverse load and can be advantageously used for real-time transverse strain sensor, which is different from the basic sensing theory of the FBG sensors based on direct spectral analysis. The evolution of s(1) of FBG in transmission with respect to the transverse load is studied experimentally, and a sensitivity of about 0.089/N is obtained. We also design a special gratings structure to reduce the effect of cross-sensitivity which is typically a limitation of most FBG sensors. The simulations show a great dependence of measurement performances with respect to the shape of transmission spectrum.

Abstract:A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was written in a novel "quasi-rectangle" high birefringence fiber by the phase-mask method. Two Bragg wavelengths corresponding to the fast-axis mode and slow-axis mode are observed in this grating, and a wavelength splitting as large as 0.765 nm was obtained. The wavelength splitting changes proportionally to the temperature, but remains the same as the strain increases. This novel FBG can be used to measure temperature and strain simultaneously.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been widely used in many fields for the measurement of temperature, strain, and other parameters, but single-mode FBG has a cross-sensitivity problem between temperature and strain. In this article, a new scheme is proposed to solve the problem by using parallel core–cladding FBGs, whose grating areas are located at the interface region of the core and cladding of the fiber. The sensing principle of parallel core–cladding FBGs for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is theoretically analyzed. The femtosecond laser point-by-point method of the parallel core–cladding FBGs is experimentally investigated. Two parallel FBGs, namely, core FBG and cladding FBG, are formed efficiently and conveniently by a single time inscription. Two transmission peaks have been observed, which are excited by the core mode and the cladding mode. The experiment results demonstrated that the proposed compact sensor can detect the temperature with sensitivity of 11.043 pm/°C and strain with sensitivity of 1.2101 pm/ up to , and the relative errors of temperature and strain are less than 5.8% and 8.3%, respectively. The proposed parallel core–cladding FBGs are much more compact as one FBG element compared with the conventional structure with two cascaded FBGs or parallel FBGs. The parallel core–cladding FBGs can overcome the cross-sensitivity problem of single-mode FBG, which has great application value and potential in fiber sensing fields for dual-parameter.

Abstract:Simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature is crucial for various applications that operate in diverse environments. Fiber Bragg gratings, known for their sensitivity to both strain and temperature, can serve as effective sensors for such simultaneous measurements. However, achieving discrimination between strain and temperature in FBG sensors requires the incorporation of a distinct mechanism in their design. This present a novel approach to dual sensing by exploring the impact of modulation depth of refractive index in cascaded FBGs. Modulation depth of refractive index is a significant spectral parameter of FBGs, influencing the grating's strength. By cascading two gratings with different modulation depths, the reflection spectrum exhibits two peaks, and their amplitudes are influenced by the modulation depth. Notably, the proposed sensor design eliminates the need for complicated packaging, which is often time-consuming and expensive. The study includes a simulation analysis of the proposed sensor, consisting of two FBGs with distinct modulation depths of refractive index. This technique demonstrates a linear variation in both Bragg wavelength and normalized peak difference (M) in response to changes in strain and temperature. The obtained strain and temperature sensitivities in this study were 1.19 pm/με and 11.4 pm/°C, respectively.

Abstract:Soft glass fibers can transmit the wavelengths longer than 2μm, which can realize the sensors in mid-infrared waveband. Compared to the FBG sensors based on silica fibers, FBG sensors based on soft glass fibers have the advantages of high sensitivity. For the first time, the sensing characteristics of FBGs based on different soft glass fibers are analyzed and compared. The sensing characteristics of temperature, strain and pressure of FBGs based on tellurite, chalcogenide and fluoride fibers are numerically simulated and compared. By analyzing and comparing a series of sensitivity curves of FBGs, we get some conclusions. For temperature sensing, the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber has the highest sensitivity coefficient of 175.7 pm/°C, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest sensitivity coefficient of 11.3 pm/°C. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of temperature. For strain sensing, the FBG based on the β-ZnS (CVD) fiber has the highest strain sensitivity coefficient of 2.76 pm/με, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest strain sensitivity coefficient of 1.22 pm/με. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of strain. For pressure sensing, the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber is the highest and the Bragg wavelength has is red-shifted; the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the silica fiber is the lowest and the Bragg wavelength is blue-shifted. These results will be significant for optical sensing and fiber lasers in mid-infrared waveband.

Abstract:The spectral characteristics of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a transversely inhomogeneous refractive index profile, differs con- siderably from that of a transversely uniform one. Transmission spectra of inhomogeneous and asymmetric FBGs that have been inscribed with focused ultrashort pulses with the so-called point-by-point technique are investigated. The cladding mode resonances of such FBGs can span a full octave in the spectrum and are very pronounced (deeper than 20dB). Using a coupled-mode approach, we compute the strength of resonant coupling and find that coupling into cladding modes of higher azimuthal order is very sensitive to the position of the modification in the core. Exploiting these properties allows precise control of such reflections and may lead to many new sensing applications.

Abstract:This research work is based on a previous study by the authors that characterized the behavior of FBG sensors with a polyimide coating in a structural monitoring system. Sensors applied to structural health monitoring are affected by the presence of simultaneous multidirectional strains. The previous study observed the influence of the transverse strain (εy) while keeping the longitudinal strain constant (εx), where the x direction is the direction of the optical fiber. The present study develops an experimental methodology consisting of a biaxial test plan on cruciform specimens with three embedded FBG sensors coated with polyimide, acrylate, and ORMOCER®. Applying the Strain–Optic Theory as a reference, a comparison of the experimental values obtained with the different coatings was studied. This experimental work made it possible to study the influence of the transverse strain (εy) on the longitudinal measurements of each FBGS and the influence of the coating material. Finally, the calibration procedure was defined as well as K (strain sensitivity factor) for each sensor.

Abstract:A study of the spectral characterization of polarization properties of locally pressed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is presented. The evolutions of the first Stokes (s(1)) parameter of a FBG as function of the incident angle, the load magnitude, the loaded position and the loaded length of the grating are investigated. The numerical simulation based on the modified transfer matrix method is used to calculate the s1 response and the state of polarization (SOP) of the FBG. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation demonstrate that the evolutions of polarization dependent parameters contain the information about the transverse load and have potential applications for distributed diametric load sensor. Fiber Bragg Grating with Enhanced Cladding Modes Inscribed by Femtosecond Laser and a Phase Mask

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a wide range and a comb with continuous cladding mode resonances inscribed in non-photosensitive single mode fibers using a femtosecond laser and a phase mask. The FBG is inscribed in the core and cladding, exciting a series of cladding modes in transmission. The birefringence induced by this FBG structure offers significant polarization-dependence for cladding modes, thus allowing the vector fiber twist to be perceived. By measuring the peak-to-peak differential intensity of orthogonally polarized cladding mode resonances, the proposed sensor presents totally opposite intensity response in the anticlockwise direction for the torsion angle ranging from -45° to 45°. The cladding mode comb approximately covers wavelengths over the O-, E-, S-, and C-bands in transmission. The cutoff cladding mode of air can be observed in the spectrum. Thus, the sensible refractive index range is estimated to be from 1.00 to 1.44. Temperature responsivity of the grating is also characterized. The proposed device potentially provides new solutions to the various challenges of physical vector and bio-chemical parameters sensing.
