Abstract:Based on the fabrication process of a microchannel,a method to measure the flow characteristics of fluids in a microchannel driven by hydrostatic pressure is proposed.This method easily stabilizes the pressure.The effects of different factors such as pressure,type of working fluid,and temperature on the flow characteristics are analyzed.The results show that some flow characteristics of the microfluid are the same as the micro fluid,but some other flow characteristics are different from the micro fluid.These results provide not only new evidence to understand the flow characteristics of microfluid,but also new references to design devices using flow characteristics of microfluid.

Abstract:Microchannels are widely used for heat transfer enhancement. The pressure characteristics are one of the most important factors affecting the heat transfer performance, and the pressure regulation may also control the heat transfer precisely in turn. As a common flow pattern of two-phase flow, slug flow has obvious advantages for heat and mass transfer, like steady flow rate and large interface area etc. Due to the interface stress and the velocity difference between the continuous phase and the dispersed phase, pressure fluctuations occur in both the flowing direction and the cross section. In oil and natural gas industries, pressure fluctuations of slug flow can be used for the slug size and velocity measurement, and also to analyze the principle of slug generation. However, when it comes to micro scale, pressure fluctuations of slug flow in microchannels is difficult to measure, not only due to the pressure difference within a low pressure range (10 to 103 Pa), but also because of the small size, for which conventional pressure sensors cannot be utilized. In this paper, a numerical method is adopted for the liquid-liquid slug flow (butanol/water) pressure prediction in a cross-junction square microchannel. To begin with, the validation of the numerical method is carried out by comparing the slug size with experiments under the same working conditions. Then, both pressure fluctuations in the flow direction and in the cross section are investigated. With a transient flow model, pressure fluctuations in the cross section at different flowing time are observed. Finally, effects of the dispersed phase (butanol) injection velocity on pressure fluctuations are performed. This work can be used for further study of the slug generation in microchannels. (Less)

Abstract:A measurement system is developed for the parameter detection and flow characterization of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel. Electrical capacitance measurement system and optical measurement system are designed for the micro-channels with different inner diameters of 4.0 mm, 3.1 mm and 1.8 mm respectively. In experiment, bubble flow, stratified flow, slug flow and annular flow are observed. PSD (Power Spectrum Density) and PDF (Probability Density Function) methods are used to analyze the capacitance and optical signals. The results show that the stratified flow can not be observed in the pipe with inner diameter of 1.8 mm, and that the PSD and PDF curve can be used to characterize different flow regimes of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel. So the constructed measurement system is effective, and can be used to analyze flow characteristics and identify flow regime of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel.

Abstract:A system for measuring the pressure drop of a fluid in a microchannel was developed in this study with measurements ranging from 0 to 7 kPa and an accuracy of 1 Pa for constant pressure drop. This system utilizes commercial pressure sensors, self-made amplifiers and a vibration insulation platform to insure accuracy and reproducibility of the results. Pressure calibrations can be conveniently computed using the manufacturers' datasheet. This measuring system was firstly tested with the pressure drop measurement of single-phase flow in microchannels and the results showed good agreement with theoretical computations. Oscillating pressure drops in the generation of bubbles in T-junction microchannel were studied using the pressure measurement system and their amplitude relatively to the change of working systems is carefully discussed with the comparison of theoretical models from literatures.

Abstract:The flow parameter measurement of the gas-liquid two-phase flow in small channels is very crucial and challenging in both academia and industry. Conventional techniques based on radiations, optics, acoustics, or electrics most lose their superiorities in the scenario with small channels due to the spatial limitation and the online and contactless measurement requirements. In addition, the conductive characteristic of the two-phase flow is equivalent to an impedance rather than a resistance due to the existence of multi-phases. The equivalent impedance information of the two-phase flow, especially the imaginary part, is promising to provide more flowing details but has seldom been detected or analyzed. In this paper, a method for the void fraction measurement of bubble/slug flow in small channels is proposed. The method implements void fraction measurement in a contactless way, based on the acquisition of the total impedance information of the gas-liquid two-phase flow. First, a new contactless impedance detection sensor is designed, based on the simulated inductor technique and the analog phase sensitive demodulation technique, to obtain the complete equivalent impedance information of the two-phase fluid. Then, based on the flow pattern identification result, the void fraction measurement model is developed, which is a fusion of the relationships between the void fraction and the real part/the imaginary part of the equivalent impedance information, respectively. Experimental results on prototypes with different inner diameters (2.48, 3.64, and 4.52 mm, respectively) validate the effectiveness of the proposed void fraction method. The maximum void fraction measurement biases are within 5.0%.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a new method for the direct measurement of differential pressures in a co-flow junction microfluidic device using a Capillary Laplace Gauge (CLG). The CLG - used inside the microchannel device - was designed using a tapered glass-capillary set up in co-flow junction architecture with a three-phase liquid-liquid-gas system with two flowing liquid phases and an entrained gas phase. By taking advantage of the Laplace equation, basic geometric relations and an integrated image analysis program, the movement of the entrained gas phase with the flow of the liquid-phases is tracked and monitored, allowing the gauge to function as an ultra-sensitive, integrated, differential pressure sensor measuring fluctuations in the liquid-dispersed phase channel pressure as small as tens of Pascals caused by droplet formation. The gauge was used to monitor the drop formation and breakup process in a co-flow junction microfluidic device under different flow conditions across a large range (1 x 10(-3) to 2.0 x 10(-1)) of capillary numbers. In addition to being able to monitor short and long term dispersed phase pressure fluctuation trends for both single drop and large droplet populations, the gauge was also used to clearly identify a transition between the dripping and jetting flow regimes. Overall, the combination of a unique, integrated image analysis program with this new type of sensor serves as a powerful tool with great potential for a variety of different research and industrial applications requiring sensitive microchannel pressure measurements.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a novel on-chip micro pressure sensor was developed for microfluidic pressure monitoring. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic chip contained a working fluid channel with a sealed detection channel beneath it. Any change in pressure in the working fluid channel would change the volume of the detection channel. A mixture of two immiscible fluids was sealed in the detection channel. The pressure of the working fluid can be monitored by measuring the interface displacement of the two fluids in the detection channel. A PDMS film between the working channel and detection channel can avoid cross-contamination between fluids. We acquired a calibration curve of the pressure sensor for measurement and optimized the performance of the sensor through parametric studies. Moreover, two pressure sensors were integrated into a microchip to characterize the pressure drop in the microchannel. The developed pressure sensor is inexpensive and easy to be integrated into microfluidic devices to monitor the flow conditions for cell culture, fluid mixing, and droplet manipulation.

Abstract:Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique, a new method for the velocity measurement of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed. First,two conductivity signals of gas-liquid two-phase flow are obtained by the new C~4D sensor, then by cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity of gas-liquid two-phase flow is obtained.As a preliminary research,two typical flow patterns of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow,bubble flow and slug flow,are studied in velocity measurement experiments.Experimental results,which are carried out in three horizontal mini-channels with different inner-diameters,show that C~4D technique is feasible for the velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow.The maximum velocity measurement relative error is less than 10%and the proposed method for velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow is effective.

Abstract:Both the theoretical and experimental analyses on several typical micro channels of the micro fluidic systems are presented. The flow patterns of the rigging angle bend channel, the sudden expansive channel and the elbow channel on the pressure driven mode are numerically analyzed by using CFD simulation technology. The simulation method for the electro-osmosis is described and the electroosmosis flow inside the cross channel is simulated. Four kinds of micro channel models are micromachined with glass material and experimentally detected by using Micro-PIV technology. A good agreement is obtained by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. From the results, The Micro-PIV technology is indicated to be the most efficient experimental method for micro flow detection. Furthermore, N-S equation is experimentally proved to be correct in the micron flow numerical simulation.

Abstract:A new nondestructive pressure-measurement method that can avoid potential safety problems caused by applying traditional pressure-measurement methods in vessels is presented. This method utilizes ultrasonic Rayleigh waves and critically refracted longitudinal waves ( L CR waves). The change in pressure induces a change in the stresses in the vessel's wall. According to the acoustoelastic principle, variations in stress affect the wave velocity. Meanwhile, the velocity of ultrasonic waves can also be affected by the change in temperature. Considering the effect of the pressure and temperature of the vessel on both the wave velocity and propagation distance of the ultrasonic waves, the relationship between ultrasonic transit time delay and both the pressure and temperature change is established. Furthermore, a modified model of pressure measurement is deduced. With this model, a reference method for temperature compensation, without temperature measurement, is presented. The reference method utilizes Rayleigh waves and L CR waves. These two kinds of ultrasonic waves travel along the axial direction of the vessel's wall, bearing the same changes in pressure and temperature. The relationship between the reference transit time delay between two ultrasonic transducers and the pressure is established through theoretical analysis and calibration tests on an air vessel. To reduce the error caused by the unevenness of temperature distribution, which might occur in the vessel's and the transducer's material, a new kind of transducer is used in the experiment, which has two piezoelectric elements and can be used for the Rayleigh and L CR waves. A pair of such transducers is mounted along the axial direction of the air vessel. The penetration area of the Rayleigh wave is almost the same as that of the L CR wave with the use of the new transducers. Comparison tests between the new transducers and the custom-used transducers show that the new transducers have better repeatability. Finally, using the air vessel as a specimen, experimental results show that the reference method is effective and that the pressure values calculated using the reference method are close to the manometer-measured values.

Abstract:Microcontact force measurement is widely applied in micro/nano manufacturing, medicine and microelectromechanical systems. Most microcontact force measurements are performed by using mass comparators, nano-indenter and precision electronic balance, and weighing sensors. However, these instruments have a complex structure and high cost. Nevertheless, the rapid development of microsensor technology provides a new, simple and low-cost approach for microcontact force measurement. In this study, we present a method of microcontact force measurement by using micropressure sensors and study the relationship amongst the microcontact force, output voltage and contact position of the sensor. We use a microcapacitance pressure sensor as an example, then we perform a simulation calculation and construct a microcontact force experiment system to verify the simulation results. The experimental and simulation results are consistent. In addition, an equation that describes the relationship amongst the microcontact force, output voltage and contact position of the sensor is obtained. Based on this simple and low-cost method, we build a micro-manipulation system, which indicates that the micropressure sensors can be used to measure microcontact force in various applications easily and cost-effectively. Furthermore, it is considerably relevant to research and application in this field.

A capillary fiber-based liquid metal pressure sensor

Abstract:The capillary fibers can easily be prefabricated in the factory, and their production cost is reduced. Moreover, the liquid metal fibers have the advantages of good integrity, excellent electrical conductivity, inherent stretchability, easy phase transition, and can be woven or knitted into smart fabrics. To solve the problems of the complex manufacture process and low integrity of lithographic sensors, capillary fibers replace the lithographic microfluidic channel to fill liquid metal to manufacture the pressure sensor in this paper. The prefabricated fiber is poured directly to produce the flexible chip. The steel shell is employed to increase the sensor's measuring range and to enhance its overall performance. Compression experiments on the developed sensor are conducted, and pressure-resistance curves of the developed pressure sensor are obtained. The analytical solution of the pressure for the developed sensor is derived, and the analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The cyclic loading experimental result shows that the measuring range of the chip is from 0 kPa to 1900kPa with a full-scale output value of 1644 mΩ, linearity varying from 0.14 to 1.22 mΩ/kPa, curve coincidence of 48.2%, repeatability of 2.77% and hysteresis of 5.26%. The measuring range of the developed pressure sensor is from 0MPa to 20MPa with a full-scale output value of 1046 mΩ, linearity ranging from 35.63 to 70.20 mΩ/MPa, curve coincidence of 7.5%, repeatability of 2.35% and hysteresis of 4.53%. The comparison of performance indexes shows that the capillary fiber-based chip has good measurement performance, and the introduction of steel shell further improves the measurement performance.

Abstract:Locally constrictive microchannels are effective components to implement droplet break-up in microfluidic processes. We herein report an experimental study of droplet break-up flow based on pressure drop analysis. The time varying pressure drops were recorded by a self-assembled experimental platform with measurement accuracy of 1 Pa, and the variations of those pressure drops were in accord with the fluctuations of capillary pressure. Fourier transform was then employed to analyze the droplet break-up behaviors and confirm the numbers of daughter droplets instead of traditional microscopic imaging method. With the guidance of the pressure drop analysis, the effects of crucial factors such as surfactant concentration, fluid flow rate, and fluid viscosity on droplet break-up were investigated. The additional hydrostatic energy cost for droplet stretching and deformation in the constriction was finally discussed in contrast to the increase of interfacial energy, which were both confirmed on the level of 10(-8) J/droplet. Abstract:Abstract In this paper, a composite pressure-sensitive mechanism combining diaphragm bending and volume compression was developed for resonant pressure microsensors to achieve high-pressure measurements with excellent accuracy. The composite mechanism was explained, and the sensor structure was designed based on theoretical analysis and finite element simulation. An all-silicon resonant high-pressure microsensor with multiple miniaturized cavities and dual resonators was developed, where dual resonators positioned in two resonant cavities with suitably different widths are used to perform opposite characteristics in pressure and the same characteristics at different temperatures, which can improve pressure sensitivities and realize temperature self-compensation by differential frequency output. The microsensor was fabricated by microfabrication, and the experimental results showed that the sensor had an accuracy of ±0.015% full scale (FS) in a pressure range of 0.1~100 MPa and a temperature range of −10~50 °C. The pressure sensitivity of the differential frequency was 261.10 Hz/MPa (~2523 ppm/MPa) at a temperature of 20 °C, and the temperature sensitivities of the dual resonators were −1.54 Hz/°C (~−14.5 ppm/°C) and −1.57 Hz/°C (~−15.6 ppm/°C) at a pressure of 2 MPa. The differential output had an outstanding stability within ±0.02 Hz under constant temperature and pressure. Thus, this research provides a convenient solution for high-pressure measurements because of its advantages, namely, large range, excellent accuracy and stability.

Non-Destructive Gas Pressure Measurement in Compact Sealed Electronic Vacuum Devices by Penning-Type Discharge

Abstract:Measuring the pressure inside the compact sealed electronic vacuum devices is a difficult proposition that typically requires destructive analysis. In the paper, we offer an indirectly method to pressure measurement without operating the devices. Towards that end, a simple and compact Penning-type diacharge structure only include two electrodes and an additional permanent magnet is established. The discharge characteristics under different anode voltages and different pressures are studied. The principle in measuring the pressure inside compact sealed electronic vacuum devices is analyzed, and the pressure-current chart is acquired. A sustaining discharge strikes with a measurable pressure varying current starting at a pressure of 1-10 -2 Pa of helium. These results demonstrate the validity of this research and by applying our structure to compact sealed electronic vacuum devices, pressures inside the tubes can be measured without puncturing the vacuum envelope.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high-precision interventional pressure measurement catheter with a compact structure for in vivo pressure monitoring. This catheter uses a minimally invasive testing method, and the proposed compact structure reduces pressure loss caused by fluid movement inside the catheter, ensuring accuracy in dynamically varying pressure measurements. The paper conducts a theoretical analysis of the pressure transmission process inside the catheter, fabricates a prototype, and establishes both dynamic and static pressure testing systems. Through experimental research on the effects of the catheter’s dimensions on the accuracy of dynamically varying pressure measurements, it demonstrates that the compact pressure measurement catheter can effectively enhance the precision of dynamically varying pressure measurements. The catheter offers high precision, small size, and simple manufacturing processes. It holds promising applications in fields such as in-body pressure measurement and microfluidic system monitoring.

Abstract:This paper presents a relative pressure sensor fabricated by a standard industrial flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) technology. The passive wireless sensor consists of a variable sensing capacitor and a planar coil inductor. When the external pressure is applied to the sensing capacitor, it changes the air gap and shifts the LC resonance frequency which is detected by an antenna wirelessly. The sensing cavity of the variable capacitor is extended to the opening at the end of an embedded pressure channel in the FPCB strip to enable relative pressure measurement. Measurement results showed that the proposed sensor with such an open sensing cavity had much higher frequency sensitivity (up to 0.4 %/mmHg) compared with the sensor with a sealed cavity (< 0.01 %/mmHg in this work and ≤ 0.08 in literature). With the enhanced sensitivity, the measured pressure resolution could reach 0.2 mmHg. The potential application of the proposed sensor includes gauge pressure measurement with respect to local atmospheric pressure, such as intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, without complicated re-calibration procedures. The flat FPCB structure facilitates applications with limited space for sensor installation, such as in the subdural implantation procedures. Furthermore, the proposed technology enables future development of flexible microfluidic devices.
