Abstract:Microfluidic chips have been proven to be a powerful technical platform for chemical synthesis, biomedical research, and optofluidic devices. Here, we report a smart microfluidic chip (SMC) with multiple functionality to sense the status or incidents occurring on chip. The SMC is enabled by a soft, flexible and attachable film embedded with optical micro/nanofibres (MNFs), which is highly compatible with microfluidic chips fabricated by lithography. Based on the transition from guided modes to radiation modes of the MNFs, simultaneous flow rate detection in multiple channels is demonstrated on a SMC with high sensitivity. The MNF-enabled SMC is also capable of monitoring the transportation and morphology of microfluidic droplets with fast response. In addition, real-time counting of the magnetic droplets is performed to verify the SMC's anti-electromagnetic interference ability. This SMC is unique and may play an important role in microreactors, droplet microfluidics and optofluidic sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of a molecular tracer based laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer for measuring fluid velocity profile in microfluidics. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of this measurement system, the velocity profiles of the cylindrical and rectangular microchannels are measured, respectively. We compare our experimental results with theoretical prediction. The theoretical prediction shows a good consistency with practical measurement results. The spatial resolutions are analyzed and validated. Finally, the error source of the presented system is analyzed, which makes it possible to compensate some error quantitatively and guides the application of this system.

Abstract:The flowrate measurement devices or instruments in small channel are very limited.Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique and cross-correlation velocity measurement principle,a new method for flowrate measurement in millimeter-scale pipe is proposed and a new measurement device is developed.Two pairs of electronic switches are used to obtain two independent conductivity signals of the fluid.By cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity and flowrate of the fluid can be determined.As a preliminary research,flowrate measurement experiments are carried out in two pipes with the inner diameters of 3.2 mm and 5.4 mm,respectively.The experimental results show that the new proposed method based on C~4D technique for flowrate measurement is feasible and effective.

This paper presents a novel micro fabrication method based on the laminar characteristics of microscale flow. This new micro fabrication process can be used for high aspect ratio etching inside a micro channel on isotropic Substrate materials and the features of the micro structures, which are patterned with this fabrication method, are determined by the flow parameters. A new kind of Glass-PDMS microfluidic chip with an impermanent bonding is used for the convenience of observing and measurement. The effects of flowrates on etching rate and the micro topography were analyzed. Abstract:Both the theoretical and experimental analyses on several typical micro channels of the micro fluidic systems are presented. The flow patterns of the rigging angle bend channel, the sudden expansive channel and the elbow channel on the pressure driven mode are numerically analyzed by using CFD simulation technology. The simulation method for the electro-osmosis is described and the electroosmosis flow inside the cross channel is simulated. Four kinds of micro channel models are micromachined with glass material and experimentally detected by using Micro-PIV technology. A good agreement is obtained by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results. From the results, The Micro-PIV technology is indicated to be the most efficient experimental method for micro flow detection. Furthermore, N-S equation is experimentally proved to be correct in the micron flow numerical simulation.

Abstract:We have developed and characterized two novel micro flow sensors based on measuring the electrical impedance of the interface between the flowing liquid and metallic electrodes embedded on the channel walls. These flow sensors are very simple to fabricate and use, are extremely compact and can easily be integrated into most microfluidic systems. One of these devices is a micropore with two tantalum/platinum electrodes on its edges; the other is a micro channel with two tantalum /platinum electrodes placed perpendicular to the channel on its walls. In both sensors the flow rate is measured via the electrical impedance between the two metallic electrodes, which is the impedance of two metal-liquid junctions in series. The dependency of the metal-liquid junction impedance on the flow rate of the liquid has been studied. The effects of different parameters on the sensor's outputs and its noise behavior are investigated. Design guidelines are extracted and applied to achieve highly sensitive micro flow sensors with low noise.

Abstract:With the development of analytical instrumentation to minimization,integration and automation,the microfluidic chips,which are more integrated,complex and diversified,have been applied widely on the manufacturing of analytical instrumentation.However,the present photolithography-based microfabrication technology,which is only able to pattern microchannels with simple inside structures,can not follow the rapid development of requirements.For solving the problem,a fabrication method based on the restricting effect of laminar flow is proposed for the micro etching on isotropic substrates.Experiments were conducted inside glass-based microchannels,in which certain etchant was used to form complicated microstructures.The flow parameters’ effects on the aspect ratio,side wall profile and etching rate were revealed by the experiments.The experimental results reveal that the topography of micro structures patterned with the restricted flow etching method is mainly determined by the flowrates of separator and etchant.The computational fluid dynamics（CFD） model on the interface between multiple streams was established for the etching process,and analysis on the causes of various micro topographies was conducted based on the CFD simulation results.The experimental data consisted with the simulation results very well.The investigation depicted in this paper indicate that the flow restricted etching method provides sufficient references for the research and understanding on the mass transport at the liquid-liquid surface in the microchannel and can be used to pattern complex micro structures with high aspect ratios,meantime,it greatly enriches the microfabrication technology for microfluidic chips.

Abstract:A microfluidic chip driven by capillary force has the advantage of low cost and ease of manufacturing in batches, and its flow behavior is dominated by the geometry and surface characteristics of the microchannel. The design of mirochannel structures is very important for the microfluidic chips. This study presents a semi analytical method for the design of capillary microchannel. In this method, the quasi-steady state approximate solution method of the Young–Laplace equation is used to derive the capillary surface tension, and the parallel flow assumption based on the Reynolds equation is used to derive the resistance of the channel wall. A computational fluid dynamics simulation is used to provide the inlet effect coefficient and channel shape effect coefficient of this model. The availability of the semi analytical model is verified by the experiment. This model realizes the flow analysis of two-dimensional capillary flow channel with a continuous shape of the flow channel wall, providing a fast and accurate method for the structural design of the microfluidic chip driven by capillary force.

Abstract:Rapid technological progress has required reliable measurement techniques for velocity field in microspace, particularly in the biochip or electrochemical engineering. Research on the flow in microchannel is the foundation of the microfluidic-based biochip. In this paper, a micro-resolution particle image velocimetry (mu-PIV) system, with order of 1 mum spatial resolution for the measurement of velocity field, was used to measure the pressure-driven flow in the microchannel with barriers. The corresponding numerical simulation was performed as a comparison, and both experimental and numerical results are in good agreement. The results show that the barriers are benefit to the chaotic mixing because of the linked twist maps (LTMs) in these regions. Abstract:Typical microfluide devices basically operate at low Reynolds numbers. The flowage in microchannels is entirely laminar. This letter quantifies both experimentally and numerically the diffusion across the interface between two aqueous solutions in pressure-driven laminar flow in microchannels. The relationship between the flow parameters at the inlets and the interface's location and diffusion extent is verified at high Peclet number (about 800 similar to 8000). The experimental results accord with the CM results very well. A quantitative conclusion of the interface location and the diffusion extent between two streams near the walls, such as described in this letter, are required for the further development of the technology of microfabrication inside microchannels using fluid flow. The features of the micro structures, which are patterned with this fabrication method, are determined by interface location and the diffusion across the interface in a great degree. In the last part of this letter we give some the experiment results about the relationship of the flow parameters and the topography of the secondary patterned micro structures.

Abstract:The accurate monitoring and control of liquid flow at low flow rates have become increasingly important in contemporary biomedical research and industrial monitoring. Inspired by the drop-counting principle implemented in a clinical gravity drip, we propose a novel microfluidic flowmetry technology for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based conventional microfluidic devices, known as a microfluidic digital meter-on-chip (DMC), to achieve on-chip and localized microflow measurements with ultrahigh precision and a wide tunable range. The DMC technology primarily relies on capillarity, unlike a gravity drip, to induce a characteristic interfacial droplet pinch-off process, from which digital microflowmetry devices can discretize continuous flow into countable transferred liquid units with consistent quantifiable volumes. Enabled by the passive discretization principle and optical transparency, the DMC device requires no external energy input or bulky control equipment, and a non-contact wireless optical detection scheme using a smartphone can be conveniently used as a readout module. Moreover, the DMC technology achieves an ultrahigh flow-to-frequency sensitivity (6.59 Hz (mu L min(-1))(-1)) and resolution (droplet transfer volume down to 2.5 nL, nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than in previously reported work, resulting in ultralow flow rates of 1 mu L min(-1)). In addition, the flow rate measurement range covers up to 80 mu L min(-1) and down to at least 150 nL min(-1) (over 100 times lower than reported similar digital flowmetry on the same time scale) using the current device configuration. Benefiting from its simple device architecture and adaptability, the versatile DMC technology can be seamlessly integrated with various microfluidic and nanofluidic devices for drug delivery and biochemical analysis, serving as a promising technology platform for next-generation highly demanding microflow measurements.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of MEMS technology in the past decades, the micro fluid machinery such as micro pumps and micro compressors have attracted more and more attentions. Understanding of the flow behaviors in such micro devices is crucial for a better design of these micro devices. In the present paper, the improved DSMC based on the information preservation (IP) method is presented and applied for the study of micro flow performance. The rarefied Couette flows are simulated and compared in different conditions by DSMC and that on IP method respectively. The results show that the improved DSMC on IP method can reduce the statistical scatter in low speed Micro-fluidic flow effectively.
Manufacturing of Microfluidic Devices with Interchangeable Commercial Fiber Optic Sensors

Abstract:In situ measurements are highly desirable in many microfluidic applications because they enable real-time, local monitoring of physical and chemical parameters, providing valuable insight into microscopic events and processes that occur in microfluidic devices. Unfortunately, the manufacturing of microfluidic devices with integrated sensors can be time-consuming, expensive, and "know-how" demanding. In this article, we describe an easy-to-implement method developed to integrate various "off-the-shelf" fiber optic sensors within microfluidic devices. To demonstrate this, we used commercial pH and pressure sensors ("pH SensorPlugs" and "FOP-MIV", respectively), which were "reversibly" attached to a glass microfluidic device using custom 3D-printed connectors. The microfluidic device, which serves here as a demonstrator, incorporates a uniform porous structure and was manufactured using a picosecond pulsed laser. The sensors were attached to the inlet and outlet channels of the microfluidic pattern to perform simple experiments, the aim of which was to evaluate the performance of both the connectors and the sensors in a practical microfluidic environment. The bespoke connectors ensured robust and watertight connection, allowing the sensors to be safely disconnected if necessary, without damaging the microfluidic device. The pH SensorPlugs were tested with a pH 7.01 buffer solution. They measured the correct pH values with an accuracy of ±0.05 pH once sufficient contact between the injected fluid and the measuring element (optode) was established. In turn, the FOP-MIV sensors were used to measure local pressure in the inlet and outlet channels during injection and the steady flow of deionized water at different rates. These sensors were calibrated up to 140 mbar and provided pressure measurements with an uncertainty that was less than ±1.5 mbar. Readouts at a rate of 4 Hz allowed us to observe dynamic pressure changes in the device during the displacement of air by water. In the case of steady flow of water, the pressure difference between the two measuring points increased linearly with increasing flow rate, complying with Darcy's law for incompressible fluids. These data can be used to determine the permeability of the porous structure within the device.

Abstract:This article reviews existing methods for the characterisation of mixing and flow in microchannels, micromixers and microreactors. In particular, it analyses the current experimental techniques and methods available for characterising mixing and the associated phenomena in single and multiphase flow. The review shows that the majority of the experimental techniques used for characterising mixing and two-phase flow in microchannels employ optical methods, which require optical access to the flow, or off-line measurements. Indeed visual measurements are very important for the fundamental understanding of the physics of these flows and the rapid advances in optical measurement techniques, like confocal scanning laser microscopy and high resolution stereo micro particle image velocimetry, are now making full field data retrieval possible. However, integration of microchannel devices in industrial processes will require on-line measurements for process control that do not necessarily rely on optical techniques. Developments are being made in the areas of non-intrusive sensors, magnetic resonance techniques, ultrasonic spectroscopy and on-line flow through measurement cells. The advances made in these areas will certainly be of increasing interest in the future as microchannels are more frequently employed in continuous flow equipment for industrial applications.

Abstract:Mechanical carving with precise numerical control was applied to fabricate the. deep channel( 500 p,m)on polycarbonate microfluidic chip, in order to improve the-absorbance detection sensitivity. A simple 2-dimension photometric detection system using a cheap charge coupled device (CCD) dispense with other optical device was developed to achieve colorimetric measurement in the microfluidic chip-based multi-phase laminar-flow system. Compared with most of the chips fabricated those-were reported, the present system has the advantages of simple configuration and ease of fabricating, and ten folds of optical path enhancement was achieved.

Abstract:Flow monitoring of the fluid confined in a regular microchamber becomes essential for the fundamental studies and applications accompanied by the bloom of microfluidic technique. The unique properties of anisotropic fluids make it possible to monitor and feedback the flow dynamics without the assistant of external complicated additional devices. Herein, we develop a fantastic microfluidics with optically anisotropic liquid crystals to reflect the real-time flow rate by analyzing the interference colors and corresponding transmittance spectra of the liquid crystal confined in a judiciously designed microchannel. A linear relationship of the transmission spectral shift rate and the flow rate is explored initially, thereby enabling a fantastic capability of sensing the flow behavior of the target fluid in a closed chamber or pipeline. The measurement range of flow rate covers from 150 nl min-1 to 6500 nl min-1 when the cross-section size of microchannel is 60 × 10 μm2. Such range can be efficiently expanded and the performance can be further enhanced by altering the channel size. This work provides a feasible strategy towards the flow monitoring and other possible dynamic properties of the fluids by integrating the microfluidic chip with the tested systems, therefore unlocking the long-sought full potentials of such non-invasive optical microfluidic technique on chemical engineering, environmental monitoring, biological medicine, and even microfluidic photonics.

Abstract:Mass transport in geometrically confined environments is fundamental to microfluidic applications. Measuring the distribution of chemical species on flow requires the use of spatially resolved analytical tools compatible with microfluidic materials and designs. Here, the implementation of an attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) imaging (macro-ATR) approach for chemical mapping of species in microfluidic devices is described. The imaging method is configurable between a large field of view, single-frame imaging, and the use of image stitching to build composite chemical maps. Macro-ATR is used to quantify transverse diffusion in the laminar streams of coflowing fluids in dedicated microfluidic test devices. It is demonstrated that the ATR evanescent wave, which primarily probes the fluid within ∼500 nm of the channel surface, provides accurate quantification of the spatial distribution of species in the entire microfluidic device cross section. This is the case when flow and channel conditions promote vertical concentration contours in the channel as verified by three-dimensional numeric simulations of mass transport. Furthermore, the validity of treating the mass transport problem in a simplified and faster approach using reduced dimensionality numeric simulations is described. Simplified one-dimensional simulations, for the specific parameters used herein, overestimate diffusion coefficients by a factor of approximately 2, whereas full three-dimensional simulations accurately agree with experimental results.

Abstract:The development of new standardized test methods would allow for the consistent evaluation of microfluidic medical devices and enable high-quality products to reach the market faster. A comprehensive flow characterization study was conducted to identify regulatory knowledge gaps using a generic inertia-based spiral channel model for particle sorting and facilitate standards development in the microfluidics community. Testing was performed using 2–20 μm rigid particles to represent blood elements and flow rates of 200–5000 μL/min to assess the effects of flow-related factors on overall system performance. Two channel designs were studied to determine the variability associated with using the same microchannel multiple times (coefficient of variation (CV) of 27% for Design 1 and 18% for Design 2, respectively). The impact of commonly occurring failure modes on device performance was also investigated by simulating progressive and complete channel outlet blockages. The pressure increased by 10–250% of the normal channel pressure depending on the extent of the blockage. Lastly, two common data analysis approaches were compared—imaging and particle counting. Both approaches were similar in terms of their sensitivity and consistency. Continued research is needed to develop standardized test methods for microfluidic systems, which will improve medical device performance testing and drive innovation in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Reliability of microfluidic designs is an extremely important issue that defines the range of applicability of micro-devices. The reliability design of micro-channels presents new complications that require extensions of today's method to incorporate reliable prediction methodologies. In this paper, using the improved Direct Simulation Monte Carlo, a prediction method was proposed for the reliability design of micro-flow channels. The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method appears to be useful in micro-flow simulations because the corresponding Knudsen numbers are often beyond those that can be simulated by continuum approaches. Based on the assumption of certain pressure distributions with the second-order on the boundaries in the micro flow cells, the improved DSMC method was used to obtain the corresponding pressure and viscous forces of the micro-flow. For all boundaries of the microstructure interacting with the fluid experienced loads from the flow, the load was expressed as the sum of the corresponding pressure and viscous forces obtained from the DSMC method. Using the Finite Element Method, the stress distribution and the deformation of the microstructure under the loads can then be given. Considering failure criteria of the material and structure, the reliability parameters were further estimated and analyzed. In order to demonstrate the effects of the method in optimizing the design of microfluidic devices, the performance and reliability predictions are made for a microchannel under backward-facing flows. The results show that the method is necessary and effective to predict weak spots of micro devices and prevent the extreme deformation in design of microchannels.
