Abstract:Metal chalcogenide is a promising material for studying novel underlying physical phenomena and nanoelectronics applications. Here, we systematically investigate the crystal structure and electronic properties of the AlSe surface alloy on Al (111) using scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometer, and first-principle calculations. We reveal that the AlSe surface alloy possesses a hexagonal closed-packed structure. The AlSe surface alloy comprises two atomic sublayers (Se sublayer and Al sublayer) with 1.16 A along the z direction. The dispersion shows two hole-like bands for AlSe surface alloy located at about -2.2 eV, far below the Fermi level, which is sharply different from other metal chalcogenide and binary alloys. These two bands mainly derive from the in-plane orbital of AlSe (px and py). These results provide implications for related Al-chalcogen interface. Meanwhile, AlSe alloy have an advantage of large-scale atomic flatness and a wide band gap near the Fermi level in serving as an interface for two-dimensional materials.
Preferential Substitution of Selenium along the Grain Boundaries in Monolayer MoS 2(1- x ) Se 2 x Alloy

Abstract:We report a microscopic study on the process for the substitution of selenium into monolayer molybdenum disulfide via a joint CVD-STEM characterization. Results from quantitative and statistic STEM reveal that the concentration of Se atoms in grain boundaries is much higher than that in intra-domains of monolayer MoS2(1-x) Se-2x alloy. In-depth analysis finds that Se atoms are enriched in the distorted regions due to presence of dislocation cores on the grain boundary, which can be further understood by considering the difference of chemical reactivity for doping reaction in different types of grain boundaries with different symmetry and different misorientation angles. Our results pave the way towards the controlled growth of alloyed two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials with a high precision, and their further applications.

Abstract:Chiral N-oxide salen ligands and their corresponding Al complexes were synthesized. Notably, the catalytic activity and asymmetric induction ability of the bifunctional N-oxide salen-Al for asymmetric cyanosilylation were compared with that of bi-component catalyst system including chiral pyrrolidine salen–Al complex and Ph3PO. Interestingly, introducing N-oxide group in salen unit could enhance the activity and enantioselectivity of bifunctional catalyst without further adding Ph3PO as co-catalyst and inverse configurations were generated from the two systems. In addition, excellent yields and high ee values could be obtained under milder conditions in bifunctional catalyst system compared with that of bi-component catalyst system.
A New Generation of Alloyed/multimetal Chalcogenide Nanowires by Chemical Transformation

Abstract:One-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructures are important candidates for many technological applications such as photovoltaic and thermoelectric devices. However, the design and synthesis of one-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructured materials with controllable components and properties remain a challenge. We report a general chemical transformation process for the synthesis of more than 45 kinds of one-dimensional alloyed/hybrid metal chalcogenide nanostructures inherited from mother template Te x Se y @Se core-shell nanowires with tunable compositions. As many as nine types of monometal chalcogenide alloy nanowires (including AgSeTe, HgSeTe, CuSeTe, BiSeTe, PbSeTe, CdSeTe, SbSeTe, NiSeTe, and CoSeTe) can be synthesized. Alloyed and hybrid nanowires integrated with two or more alloyed metal chalcogenide phases can also be prepared. The compositions of all of these metal chalcogenide nanowires are tunable within a wide range. This protocol provides a new general route for the controllable synthesis of a new generation of one-dimensional metal chalcogenide nanostructures.
Observation of a Surface Alloying-to-dealloying Transition During Growth of Bi on Ag(111)

Abstract:The atomic structures that develop as a function of coverage during deposition of Bi on Ag(111) have been studied using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and ab initio calculations. The growth process involves two sequential stages. At low coverage, Bi atoms are incorporated into the topmost layer of Ag(111), resulting in the formation of an Ag2Bi alloy confined to the surface and ordered (root 3 x root 3)R30 degrees Ag2Bi islands supported on Ag(111). This mode of accommodation of Bi was found to be energetically favorable based on ab initio total-energy calculations. At coverage above a critical value of 0.55 monolayers, the Ag2Bi alloy phase gradually converts into an ordered Bi (p x root 3) overlayer structure supported on Ag(111). We postulate that the dealloying transition is likely driven by compressive strain induced by incorporation of large-size Bi atoms into Ag at a high coverage and the subsequent lack of miscibility of Ag and Bi bulk phases. After completion of the dealloying process, Bi(110) thin films can be grown epitaxially on top of Ag(111) with a chemically abrupt interface.

Abstract:Alloying is a powerful tool for tuning materials that facilitates the targeted design of desirable properties for a variety of applications. In this work, we provide a comprehensive investigation of the synthetic accessibility and electronic properties of nine alkaline-earth chalcogenide anion alloys (CaS$_{1-x}$O$_x$, CaS$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, CaS$_{1-x}$Te$_x$, SrS$_{1-x}$O$_x$, SrS$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, SrS$_{1-x}$Te$_x$, MgS$_{1- x}$O$_x$, MgS$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, and MgS$_{1-x}$Te$_x$). We show that isostructural alloying within the rock salt structure is favored for all systems except MgS$_{1-x}$Te$_x$, which is predicted to be a heterostructural alloy between the rock salt and wurtzite structures. Alloys of S and Se are shown to be readily accessible for all cations with low miscibility critical temperatures, enabling continuous tuning of electronic properties across this composition space. Alloys of S and Te have higher critical temperatures but may be accessible through non-equilibrium synthesis strategies and are predicted here to have desirable electronic properties for optoelectronics with wide band gaps and lower effective masses than alloys of S and Se. Anion alloying in MgS$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ stabilizes the wurtzite structure across a significant fraction of composition space, which may make it of particular interest as a transparent conducting material due to its lower effective masses and a higher band gap than the rock salt structure. Zero-point corrected random phase approximation (RPA) energies were computed to resolve the small polymorph energy differences of the Mg compounds and are shown to be critical for accurately describing the thermodynamic properties of the corresponding alloys.

Abstract:Alloying with various compositions is an efficient method to tailor the optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). However, the composition distribution in the monolayer of TMDs alloys lacks detailed investigation. Here, by exploring scanning Auger electron spectroscopy, we investigate the composition distribution in MoS2(1−x)Se2x monolayers with high spatial resolution. Our results demonstrate that inhomogeneous composition distribution exists not only among different nanosheets on a substrate but also within individual nanosheets. Our study would be helpful to develop new methods for controllable synthesis of TMDs alloys and other 2D materials.

Abstract:The β-phase of the radical p-NCC6F4CNSSN (1β) crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Fdd2 and orders as a canted antiferromagnet with TN = 36 K. Computational studies (B3LYP or M06-2X functional with the cc-pVTZ-PP(-f)+basis set) of the microscopic nearest-neighbour magnetic exchange coupling in 1β and in the hypothetical isomorphous phase of the selenium radical p-NCC6F4CNSeSeN (2β) revealed that replacement of S by Se should lead to a significant enhancement in the magnetic ordering temperature by ca. 20% (B3LYP) – 30% (M06-2X). Recrystallization of 2 from solution or via vacuum sublimation afforded only the known diamagnetic, dimeric phase, 2α. Computational studies indicated that both the molecular geometry and charge distribution for 1 and 2 are extremely similar and experimental approaches to form alloys of the general form 11-x2x were explored: Attempts to cosublime 1 and 2in vacuo were unsuccessful, forming only 1β due to the low volatility of 2. Crystallization of pure 1 by solution evaporation was found to afford polymorph 1α (triclinic, P-1) selectively, irrespective of the solvent employed (MeCN, PhMe or THF) but 1α transformed to 1β upon subsequent vacuum sublimation. Crystallization of 1 in the presence of 2 (up to 20 mol%) from solution evaporation was examined. At 20 mol% there was clear evidence for formation of both 1α and 2α as distinct crystallographic phases by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) but some evidence for doping of 2 into 1α at low concentration (≤ 10 mol percent) was observed. Attempts to sublime a sample of 10.920.1 led to phase separation with the isolation of needle-shaped crystals ofpure 1β characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract:Metastable zinc blende CuInSe(2) nanocrystals were synthesized by a hot-injection approach. It was found that the lattice mismatches between zinc blende CuInSe(2) and ZnSe as well as CuInSe(2) and CuInS(2) are only 2.0% and 4.6%, respectively. Thus, alloyed (ZnSe)(x)(CuInSe(2))(1-x) and CuInSe(x)S(2-x) nanocrystals with a zinc blende structure have been successfully synthesized over the entire composition range, and the band gaps of alloys can be tuned in the range from 2.82 to 0.96 eV and 1.43 to 0.98 eV, respectively. These alloyed (ZnSe)(x)(CuInSe(2))(1-x) and CuInSe(x)S(2-x) nanocrystals with a broad tunable band gap have a high potential for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Very recently, a new class of the multicationic and -anionic entropy-stabilized chalcogenide alloys based on the (Ge, Sn, Pb) (S, Se, Te) formula has been successfully fabricated and characterized experimentally [Zihao Deng et al., Chem. Mater. 32, 6070 (2020)]. Motivated by the recent experiment, herein, we perform density functional theory-based first-principles calculations in order to investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties. The calculations of the cohesive energy and elasticity parameters indicate that the alloy is stable. Also, the mechanical study shows that the alloy has a brittle nature. The GeSnPbSSeTe alloy is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 0.4 eV (0.3 eV using spin–orbit coupling effect). The optical analysis illustrates that the first peak of Im(ε) for the GeSnPbSSeTe alloy along all polarization directions is located in the visible range of the spectrum which renders it a promising material for applications in optical and electronic devices. Interestingly, we find an optically anisotropic character of this system which is highly desirable for the design of polarization-sensitive photodetectors. We have accurately predicted the thermoelectric coefficients and have calculated a large power factor value of 3.7 × 1011 W m–1 K–2 s–1 for p-type. The high p-type power factor is originated from the multiple valleys near the valence band maxima. The anisotropic results of the optical and transport properties are related to the specific tetragonal alloy unit cell.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

(Invited) ALD of FeSe2, CoSe2, and NiSe2

Abstract:The iron-group transition-metal diselenides (MSe2, M = Fe, Co, Ni) have recently gained tremendous interest in many areas. The MSe2 compounds normally form similar pyrite or marcasite crystal structures, and, with a progressive increase in the metal 3d electrons, FeSe2, CoSe2, and NiSe2 exhibit diverse and fascinating optical, magnetic, and electrical properties. In this talk, I will present our latest progress on the atomic layer deposition (ALD) of FeSe2, CoSe2, and NiSe2. These ALD processes employ the corresponding metal amidinates as the metal precursors and diethyldiselenide (DEDSe) as the selenium precursor, together with Ar/H2 plasma for DEDSe activation. All of the ALD processes are able to grow pure, smooth, and crystalline MSe2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni) films, and the MSe2 films can also be uniformly deposited into 10:1 high-aspect-ratio microtrenches with excellent conformality, which thereby shows the great promise for conformal coating on 3D complex topologies in general. In situ ALD mechanism investigation further reveals that the efficient dissociation of DEDSe by plasma is key to the success of these ALD processes.
Theoretical Designs for Organoaluminum C2Al4R4 with Well-Separated Al(I) and Al(III)

Abstract:It is well-known that the chemistry of aluminum is dominated by Al(III) in the +3 oxidation state. Only during the past 2 decades has the chemistry of Al(I) and Al(II) been rapidly developed. However, if Al(I) and Al(III) are combined, the inherently high reactivities of Al(I) and Al(III) mostly result in their coupling with each other or interacting with surrounding elements, which easily results in significant deactivation or quenching of the desired oxidation states, as in the case of reported mixed valent Al-compounds. In this article, we report an unprecedented type of organoaluminum system, C2Al4R4 (R = H, SiH3, Si(C6H5)3, SiiPrDis2, SiMe(SitBu3)2), whose lowest-energy structure, C2Al4R4-01, contains two Al(I) and two Al(III) atoms. The global nature and bonding motif of the parent C2Al4R4-01 (R = H) were supported by an extensive global isomeric search, CBS-QB3 energy calculations, adaptive natural density partitioning, and bond order analysis. Interestingly and in sharp contrast to most organoaluminum species, C2Al4R4-01 is associated with little multicenter bonding. C2Al4R4-01 has a high feasibility of being observed either in the gas or condensed phases (with suitable substitutents). With well-separated Al(I) and Al(III), C2Al4R4-01 (with suitable substitutents) could serve as the first Al/Al frustrated Lewis pair.

Abstract:The interfacial tunable band alignment of heterostructures is coveted in device design and optimization of device performance. As an intentional approach, alloying allows band engineering and continuous band‐edge tunability for low‐dimensional semiconductors. Thus, combining the tunability of alloying with the band structure of a heterostructure is highly desirable for the improvement of device characteristics. In this work, the single‐step growth of alloy‐to‐alloy (MoS2(1‐x)Se2x/SnS2(1‐y)Se2y) 2D vertical heterostructures is demonstrated. Electron diffraction reveals the well‐aligned heteroepitaxial relationship for the heterostructure, and a near‐atomically sharp and defect‐free boundary along the interface is observed. The nearly intrinsic van der Waals (vdW) interface enables measurement of the intrinsic behaviors of the heterostructures. The optimized type‐II band alignment for the MoS2(1‐x)Se2x/SnS2(1‐y)Se2y heterostructure, along with the large band offset and effective charge transfer, is confirmed through quenched PL spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations. Devices based on completely stacked heterostructures show one or two orders enhanced electron mobility and rectification ratio than those of the constituent materials. The realization of device‐quality alloy‐to‐alloy heterostructures provides a new material platform for precisely tuning band alignment and optimizing device applications.

The molecular structures of both complexes in their solid states reveal a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the Al(III) ion, involving monoanionic ligand {Ph2P(E)N−C6H4−SePh}− bonded to the AlMe2‐motif in a tridentate manner. Complex 1 was found to be an effective pre‐catalyst for the cyanosilyation of aldehydes and ketones with TMSCN under solvent‐free conditions. The reaction protocol is simple, efficient, and has a diverse substrate scope of aldehydes and ketones, showing superior functional group tolerance. The kinetic study revealed that ketone reduction proceeded with first‐order dependence on ketone concentrations, TMSCN, and catalyst 1.

2D Selenium Allotropes from First Principles and Swarm Intelligence.

Abstract:Combining the particle-swarm optimization method with first-principles calculations, we explore a new category of two-dimensional (2D) monolayers composed of solely the element selenium. Three stable structures are screened from outputs of crystal search computations, namely T-Se (1T-MoS2-like), C-Se (tiled 1D helical chain), and S-Se (square structure). Phonon calculations, as well as formation energy calculations have been performed to confirm the stability of the three phases. The electronic structure calculations show that both T-Se and C-Se are indirect-band-gap semiconductors, with gap values of 1.11 eV and 2.64 eV respectively when using the hybrid HSE06 functional. In particular, C-Se has a centrosymmetry-breaking structure which provides a spontaneous in-plane ferroelectric polarization of about 2.68 x 10(-10) C m(-1) per layer. Interestingly, S-Se has a Dirac cone that can open up a band gap of 0.11 eV if spin-orbit coupling is included. The tilted Dirac cone of S-Se shows anisotropic band dispersion as characterized with different Fermi velocities of 1.26 x 10(6) and 0.24 x 10(6) m s(-1) around the Dirac point. Our works enrich the family of 2D materials of selenium allotropes and show that their versatile properties could give rise to potential application in various fields.
