Abstract:High-entropy alloys are emerging materials and are widely studied at the synthesis and characterization levels. Their machinability study and product realization are still at a nascent stage. Conventional machining operations are necessary to ensure part assembly and surface quality. Hence, end-mill machining is carried out to check the machinability of the most ductile equiatomic and non-equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) with a green manufacturing concept. Theoretical and experimental analyses examined the effect of percent composition of an element in a high-entropy alloy and machining parameters (spindle speed, depth of cut and feed per tooth) on the cutting forces, chip morphology, machined surface topography, surface micro-hardness and tool wear mechanism. Kistler dynamometer installed in CNC vertical milling machine is used with AlTiN-coated tungsten carbide tool to record the cutting forces and moments. The microstructure anisotropy induced by low vacuum induction melting of varying compositions of elements in high-entropy alloys influenced the machining results. Feed force values were higher for the non-equiatomic HEA sample than for the equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi HEA. SEM and EDS mapping has revealed microhole and microcrack surfaces after machining. Equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi HEA has shown the highest microhardness of 984 Hv than the non-equiatomic HEA sample. Graphical

Abstract:The microstructure, phase composition, microhardness, and wear resistance of Al0.25CoCrFeNiSi0.6 high entropy alloy (HEA) are studied. The alloy consists of fcc + bcc solid solution phases with precipitated needle-shape Cr3Si intermetallics. The high microhardness 710 ± 25 HV0.3 of the studied HEA can be correlated with the formation of Cr3Si. The alloy also displayed a high degree of wear resistance with wear rate of (3.1 ± 0.5) × 10−5 (mm3∙N−1∙m−1).

Abstract:High entropy alloy (HEA) has high strength, high hardness, high wear resistance and corrosion resistance which traditional alloys do not have, and has broad application prospects. The mechanical properties of AlCrFeCuNi high Entropy Alloy (HEA) under axial loading were also studied in this paper. Molecular dynamics method was used to simulate the experimental preparation process of HEA and establish an atomic model. The mechanical properties of AlCrFeCuNi HEA at different temperatures and Al concentrations were studied. The deformation process and the reasons for its high plasticity were analyzed from the point of view of material science. The simulation results show that the AlCrFeCuNi HEA undergoes elastic deformation, yield and plastic deformation stages under tension loads. In the yield stage, the appearance and growth of twins and stacking faults are one of the main reasons for the uneven plastic deformation of the alloy. The analysis shows that the Young’s modulus and yield stress of the HEA decrease linearly with the increase of Al concentration. The HEA have strong temperature effect. The lower the temperature, the smaller the Al concentration, and the greater the decrease in Young’s modulus and yield stress.

Abstract:Understanding the as-cast structure acts as a precursor, providing insights for alloy processing into a candidate structural material. The recent developments in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) draw attention to explore such domains for their suitability for commercial structural applications. The present work investigates the correlation between the macro-, microstructure, and mechanical properties of a cast single-phase Al 0.2 CoCrFeNi HEA. The alloy was produced using a vacuum induction melting route and subsequently characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Mechanical properties were evaluated through uniaxial tensile tests and nanoindentation. The macrostructure of the ingot displayed classical solidification features in both the top and bottom portions. Notably, no macrosegregation was observed in the ingot. However, microsegregation of Al and Ni was detected between the dendritic and interdendritic regions in the top part. Despite the absence of significant variation in macrohardness, the tensile tests revealed noteworthy differences in tensile strength between the top center (330 MPa) and bottom center (464 MPa) of the ingot. This variation in strength was attributed to differences in dendrite arm spacing. Further nanoindentation studies supported the observed tensile behavior, with the top center showing relatively high hardness. This high hardness was found to be correlated with the composition of the dendritic and interdendritic regions.

Abstract:The present study investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast, homogenized, cold-rolled, and annealed Al0.5CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy. The microstructure is characterized by optical microscopy, XRD, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Besides, hardness is acquired by Vickers hardness testing, and tensile testing is performed at room temperature for all samples. Results indicate that the matrix and droplet-shaped phases are present in all states. However, the needle-shaped and wall-shaped phases present after homogenization. In all samples, the matrix consists primarily of Fe, Cr, Co, and Ni, while droplet-shaped phases comprise mainly Al-Ni. Moreover, needle-shaped phases are replete with Cr, Ni, Co, Al, and Fe, whereas wall-shaped phases are rich in Cr, Co, and Fe and depleted in Al-Ni. The hardness of the Al0.5CoCrFeNi HEA increases after homogenizing and culminates at cold-rolled to 425 Hv due to the emerging of the needle and wall-shaped phases and consequently lattice distortion. The yield strength (YS), the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and the ductility (εf) of the cold-rolled specimen are about 545 MPa, 834 MPa, and 26%, respectively. The noticeable improvement in hardness and strength in cold-rolled condition demonstrates a remarkable work-hardening effect without sacrificing much ductility.

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEAs) are characterized as alloys containing five or more principal elements in equal or close to equal atomic percentage. HEAs as bulk materials and coatings are considered a potential candidate for high-temperature applications owing to their superior combination of mechanical and thermal properties. In the present study, the CrMnFeCoNi HEA coatings were developed using high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) and annealed at 800 °C for 2 h. The microstructure and wear behavior of the as sprayed and annealed HEA coatings were systematically evaluated on rough and polished surfaces. The wear behavior of these HEA coatings against an alumina (Al2O3) ball was tested at room temperature. Ex situ characterization was performed using XRD and Raman spectroscopy for phase analysis, SEM-EDS for cross-section microscopy and phase compositions of the HEA coatings. Both the as sprayed and annealed coatings comprised the FCC solid solution phase with the formation of oxides. The tribological results showed equivalent behavior of as sprayed and heat-treated coatings on the polished surfaces. Rough surfaces, on the other hand, revealed significantly higher wear rates compared to the polished surfaces due to third body abrasion during sliding. A strong emphasis was placed on correlating the interfacial processes to the tribological behavior.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are highly anticipated due to their excellent properties (e.g. high strength, high hardness, excellent wear resistance). However, compared with numerous studies on the design and properties of HEAs, the research on the machinability of HEAs is extremely rare, which limits the application of HEAs. In this work, grinding experiments of (FeCoNi)86Al7Ti7 dual-phase HEA workpieces were carried out, and the results are analysed from general machinability perspective (the effect of machining parameters on grinding force and surface roughness value) to a more in-depth perspective, including grinding induced changes in morphology and microstructure on ground surface and subsurface. With SEM and EBSD information of subsurface, the deformation mechanisms have been studied, including the role of the second phase (Ni2AlTi) in the grinding process, the material removal modes of the different phases and the morphology of the nanoprecipitates in the matrix, based on the completely opposite properties of different phases in HEA. It is noticed that the hard and brittle property of the second phase brings support to the material, reduces the plastic deformation, and also makes its own removal brittle, while the plastic matrix experiences shear deformation in grinding, which makes the nanoprecipitates in it assume different morphologies. These detailed findings could be of help to understand the effect of grinding on material properties so as to improve the machining quality of this material.

Abstract:Abstract High entropy alloy (HEA) is an advanced alloy material, which has a wide application prospect due to its excellent properties. However, the material removal mechanism and change rule of grinding force of HEA in the grinding process have seldom been studied. The main work of this paper is that the material removal mechanism of the FeCoNiCrMo 0.1 HEA is obtained by analyzing grinding debris and subsurface microstructure after grinding, the theoretical grinding force model of HEAs in plane grinding process is established on the basis of the force of a single abrasive grain, and the experimental verification is performed. According to the experimental results, the influences of different grinding parameters on grinding force are discussed, the influences of different types of grinding wheels on grinding force are analyzed, and the grinding forces generated by grinding different FeCoNiCr HEAs are compared. The results indicate that the material removal mechanism of FeCoNiCrMo 0.1 HEA is the plastic removal. With the increase of grinding speed and the decrease of grinding depth and feed speed, both normal and tangential grinding forces decrease. Under the same grinding parameters, the grinding force produced by electroplated CBN grinding wheel is greater, followed by resin-bonded CBN grinding wheel and vitrified CBN grinding wheel. The grinding force produced by grinding FeCoNiCrAl 0.1 HEA is lower than that produced by grinding FeCoNiCrMo 0.1 HEA under the same grinding conditions. The calculated value of grinding force model is consistent with the experimental value, which can scientifically reflect the variation law of HEA grinding force.

Abstract:Compared with traditional forming methods, the heterogeneous microstructure and the high-density dislocations, elemental segregation and inclusion particles in additive manufactured (AMed) parts have important effects on their surface integrity and tool wear. In this study, the microstructure of the Ni 2 CoCrNb 0.16 high-entropy alloy (HEA) manufactured by directed energy deposition (DED) under as-built and different heat treatment conditions were examined using different material characterization techniques . From this, the effects of microstructure evolution on microhardness, cutting force, surface roughness, subsurface damage and tool wear were analyzed. The result indicates that there are significant differences in surface integrity and tool wear between the AMed samples under different heat treatment conditions. This study provided guidance for future applications of DED HEA in the industry.

Abstract:The creation of new alloys with improved qualities has become essential in modern industries for high-performance materials. This work's main objective is to use vacuum arc melting (VAM) to synthesize two different high-entropy alloys (HEAs): AlCrFeNiCu and AlCrFeNiCo. The mechanical properties, phase composition, grain boundaries, and alloy composition of the HEAs were studied. The predominant crystal structure, the Body-Centred Cubic (BCC) phase was obtained for both alloys. Significantly, the Co-containing HEA showed a smaller particle size than the Cu-containing HEA, which led to a 14.21% increase in microhardness. It indicates that the Co-based HEA will likely perform better than the Cu-based HEA in applications prone to abrasion, and indentation, and requiring high hardness levels based on the observed microstructure and hardness parameters. According to wear surface morphology studies, main effects analysis and ANOVA show that increasing loads and sliding distances increase wear rate, whereas sliding velocity has less effect. The best wear rate-reducing parameters are 10 N, 0.5 m/s, and 500 m for Cu-containing HEAs, and the same can be predicted using regression analysis. The study categorizes the intricate worn surface structure by describing different surface properties and wear mechanisms, such as grooves, delamination, adhesive wear, and pitting.

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEAs) are among of the most promising new metal material groups. The achievable properties can exceed those of common alloys in different ways. Due to the mixture of five or more alloying elements, the variety of high entropy alloys is fairly huge. The presented work will focus on some first insights on the weldability and the wear behavior of vanadium carbide precipitation Cr27.5Co14Fe22Mo22Ni11.65V2.85 HEA. The weldability should always be addressed in an early stage of any alloy design to avoid welding-related problems afterwards. The cast Cr27.5Co14Fe22Mo22Ni11.65V2.85 HEA has been remelted using a TIG welding process and the resulting microstructure has been examined. The changes in the microstructure due to the remelting process showed little influence of the welding process and no welding-related problems like hot cracks have been observed. It will be shown that vanadium carbides or vanadium-rich phases precipitate after casting and remelting in a two phased HEA matrix. The hardness of the as cast alloy is 324HV0.2 and after remelting the hardness rises to 339HV0.2. The wear behavior can be considered as comparable to a Stellite 6 cobalt base alloy as determined in an ASTM G75 test. Overall, the basic HEA design is promising due to the precipitation of vanadium carbides and should be further investigated.

Abstract:The relationship among microstructure, mechanical and corrosion behavior of an Al7.5Co20.5Fe24Ni24Cr24 high‐entropy alloy (HEA) was systematically studied. The as‐cast HEA consisted of a single face‐centered cubic (FCC) phase with negligible chemical inhomogeneities of Al and Ni elements, whereas the homogenized HEA displayed a single FCC supersaturated solid‐solution phase with uniform distribution of constituent elements. Homogenization followed by aging at 900 °C and 700 °C leaded to the formation of different precipitates in the FCC matrix. As the variety and volume fraction of precipitates increased, the HEA samples accordingly showed enhanced strengths accompanying with slight losses in ductility. However, the formation of L12, B2 and σ precipitates is detrimental to the electrochemical properties of the HEAs. Improving the homogeneity of elemental distribution leads to a higher content of Cr oxides and Co(Fe,Cr)2O4 complex oxides in the passivation film, rendering an enhancement of corrosion resistance of the HEA in sulfuric acid. This work reveals the influence of chemical inhomogeneities and precipitates on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the FCC‐structured Al7.5Co20.5Fe24Ni24Cr24 HEA via tuning phase composition, providing an interesting insight to how balance the structural (strength and ductility) and functional (anti‐corrosion) properties of HEAs. Abstract:In this work, an in-situ CoCrFeNi-M6Cp high entropy-alloy (HEA) based hardmetal with a composition of Co25Cr21Fe18Ni23Mo7Nb3WC2 was fabricated by the powder metallurgy (PM) method. Microstructures and mechanical properties of this HEA were characterized and analyzed. The results exhibit that this HEA possesses a two-phase microstructure consisting of the face-centered cubic (FCC) matrix phase and the carbide M6C phase. This HEA has an average grain size of 2.2 μm, and the mean size and volume fraction of carbide particles are 1.2 μm and 20%. The tensile tests show that the alloy has a yield strength of 573 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 895 MPa and elongation of 5.5% at room temperature. The contributions from different strengthening mechanisms in this HEA were calculated. The grain boundary strengthening is the dominant strengthening mechanism, and the carbide particles are significant for the further enhancement of yield strength by the dislocation strengthening and Orowan strengthening. In addition, with increasing temperatures from 600 °C to 900 °C, the HEA shows a reduced yield strength (YS) from 473 MPa to 142 MPa, a decreased ultimate tensile strength (UTS) from 741 MPa to 165 MPa and an enhanced elongation from 10.5% to 31%.

Abstract:FeCrMnxAlCu (x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2) high-entropy alloys (HEA) and coatings were prepared through vacuum arc melting and cold spray-assisted induction remelting processes. This study investigated the effect of different Mn contents on the microstructure and wear resistance of HEAs and coatings. The results showed that the high-entropy FeCrMnxAlCu alloy prepared through vacuum arc melting and cold spray-assisted induction remelting processes comprised simple body-centered cubic and face-centered cubic phases with dendritic + interdendrite structures. The coating of the prepared alloys exhibited superior performance compared with the cast alloy. In addition, the hardness of the FeCrMnxAlCu HEA coatings synthesized through induction remelting was 1.4 times higher than that of the cast FeCrMnxAlCu HEA. Moreover, the wear rate of induction-remelted produced HEA coating was reduced by 24% compared with that of vacuum arc-melted produced HEA. The hardness of the induction-remelted produced FeCrMnxAlCu HEA coating initially increased and then decreased with increasing Mn contents. At x = 1, the hardness of FeCrMnAlCu HEA coating reached a maximum value of 586 HV, with a wear rate of 2.95 × 10−5 mm3/(N·m). The main wear mechanisms observed in the FeCrMnxAlCu HEA coatings were adhesive, abrasive, and oxidative.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the impact of various cutting parameters on the micro-cutting mechanism of high-entropy alloy FeCoCrNiAl0.6. It examines the cutting force, cutting temperature, and residual stress of FeCoCrNiAl0.6 high-entropy alloy micro-cutting using the finite element simulation method. The research findings reveal the following: as the cutting depth increases, the three-dimensional cutting force gradually rises, exhibiting a significant growth trend, and there is a positive correlation between them. Increasing the cutting speed results in small fluctuations in cutting force, which remains relatively stable. Moreover, the cutting force gradually increases with higher feed rates, demonstrating a positive correlation. The maximum temperatures of the tool surface and chip surface increase with higher cutting depth, and they are positively correlated. There is a positive correlation between cutting temperature and cutting speed. With increased cutting speed, the maximum temperature of the cutting surface steadily rises. Simultaneously, during cutting, the chip temperature increases at a faster rate compared to the tool temperature with increasing cutting speed. As the feed rate continuously increases, the maximum temperatures of the chip surface and tool surface show a steady growth trend, and there is a positive correlation between them. During the cutting process, the workpiece surface is predominantly characterized by residual compressive stress. Under different cutting depths, the absolute value of the maximum residual compressive stress on the workpiece surface decreases. Under the influence of cutting speed, when the cutting speed is below 110 mm/s, the residual compressive stress on the workpiece surface demonstrates an increasing trend. For cutting speeds between 110 and 170 mm/s, the workpiece surface initially exhibits a decreasing trend followed by an increasing trend. Increasing the feed rate leads to an increase in the absolute value of the maximum residual compressive stress on the workpiece surface.

Abstract:Equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) powder was processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM). The properties of the spherical pre-alloyed CoCrFeMnNi powder were characterized and its processability using LPBF AM was systematically investigated through the volumetric energy density (VED) based on the surface roughness, defects (micro-cracks and porosity) and densification. After optimization, LPBF processing at a VED of 104 J/mm 3 achieved highly dense and crack-free vertical and horizontal test specimens with a porosity fraction lower than 0.01% and micro-pores having a mean size of, respectively, 25.9 μm and 13.4 μm, as determined from X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) inspection. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of the as-built (AB) CoCrFeMnNi processed at a VED of 104 J/mm 3 showed a heterogeneous solidification microstructure, consisting of columnar grains with a cellular subgrain structure, and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) revealed a crystallographic texture mainly along the direction. Post treatment with hot isostatic pressing (HIP) was effective in closing the remnant micro-pores in the bulk volume of the AB CoCrFeMnNi. Also, the cellular sub-grain structure in the AB CoCrFeMnNi completely disappeared after HIP and the resulting microstructure consisted of recrystallized equiaxed grains with annealing twins. The room temperature tensile response was anisotropic for AB CoCrFeMnNi with horizontally built specimens exhibiting higher strength and fracture strains (global and local) compared to vertically built ones; HIP reduced the anisotropy in the tensile properties and led to similar tensile strength with elongation values that were ~ 50% higher than in the AB condition. The HIPed CoCrFeMnNi also displayed higher Charpy impact toughness and absorbed energy at both room and liquid nitrogen temperatures compared to the AB material. Examination of the fracture surfaces after tensile and Charpy impact testing revealed ductile features with characteristic dimpled appearance and pointed to the important role of the remnant micro-pores on failure in the AB CoCrFeMnNi. Tribological assessments pointed to the superior low-stress abrasion resistance of AB and HIPed CoCrFeMnNi compared to 316L stainless steel (SS), which was included in this study to reinforce the analysis. SEM observations revealed that scratching and micro-fracture are the dominant wear mechanisms for the CoCrFeMnNi HEA, whereas ploughing and cutting parallel to the abrasive flow direction are the dominant mechanisms for 316L SS. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate and report the low-stress abrasion resistance of any high entropy alloy. To understand the corrosion behavior, polarization curves of AB and HIPed CoCrFeMnNi were measured in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 1N H 2 SO 4 solutions, and the results were compared to those of 316L SS. The findings indicate that AB and HIPed CoCrFeMnNi outperform 316L SS in a chloride-containing environment, but not in an acid-containing environment. Additionally, observations of hydrogen permeability revealed that AB CoCrFeMnNi permeates a lower volume of hydrogen atoms (by ~ 5 times) compared to 316L SS, despite its higher (by nearly 3 times) diffusion coefficient. Electrochemical hydrogen permeation data showed that the concentration of atomic hydrogen in the sub-surface of AB and HIPed CoCrFeMnNi was, respectively, about 32 and 26 times lower than in 316L SS. This study provides important material–structure–property data and indicates a promising outlook for LPBF of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA with high-performance.
Investigation of mechanical behavior, constitutive modeling, and fracture criteria for as-cast Al0.3CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy

Abstract:High entropy alloys (HEAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years, primarily focusing on alloying design and thermal processing. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical response of Al0.3CoCrFeNi, a representative HEA, under various stress states, temperatures, and strain rates, aiming to establish its constitutive equation and fracture criteria. Employing a hybrid FEM/EX approach, the constitutive behaviour of the alloy was characterized using the modified Johnson-Cook (MJC) model, while the fracture properties were assessed using the Hosford-Coulomb (HC) equation. Experimental findings highlighted the remarkable tensile strength (578.1 MPa) and ductility (69%) of the as-cast Al0.3CoCrFeNi at room temperature. However, at elevated temperatures ranging from 400 °C to 650 °C, a reduction in ductility was observed, accompanied by serration behaviour. Notably, precipitation hardening was detected at 800 °C, indicative of strengthening through precipitate formation. Additionally, Al0.3CoCrFeNi exhibited significant strain rate sensitivity and a positive strain rate effect, emphasizing its dynamic response under different loading conditions. The accuracy of the constitutive model and fracture criteria was validated through the examination of deformation and fracture modes in Taylor impact tests. The MJC model demonstrated predictions within a 10% deviation from experimental data, while the HC fracture criterion, accounting for stress triaxiality and Lode parameters, effectively predicted shear fracture in the projectiles. Crack formation in the projectiles resulted from a combination of tension and shear, followed by propagation at a 45° angle under combined compression and shear loading. This comprehensive study enhances understanding of the mechanical properties of Al0.3CoCrFeNi, providing valuable insights for its application in engineering, particularly in impact protection.

Abstract:FeCoNiCrAl0.8Cu0.5Si0.5 high-entropy alloys were fabricated using vacuum induction melting and laser deposition processes, followed by a comparison of the structural and mechanical properties of two distinct sample types. The as-cast FeCoNiCrAl0.8Cu0.5Si0.5 alloy is comprised of BCC1, BCC2, and Cr3Si phases, while the laser-deposited alloy primarily features BCC1 and BCC2 phases. Microstructural analysis revealed that the as-cast alloy exhibits a dendritic morphology with secondary dendritic arms and densely packed grains, and the laser-deposited alloy displays a dendritic structure without the formation of granular interdendritic regions. For mechanical properties, the as-cast FeCoNiCrAl0.8Cu0.5Si0.5 alloy demonstrated higher hardness than the as-deposited alloy, with values of 586 HV0.2 and 557 HV0.2, respectively. The wear rate for the as-cast alloy was observed at 3.5 × 10−7 mm3/Nm, with abrasive wear being the primary wear mechanism. Conversely, the as-deposited alloy had a wear rate of 9.0 × 10−7 mm3/Nm, characterized by adhesive wear. The cast alloy exhibited an icorr of 4.062 μA·cm−2, with pitting as the form of corrosion. The laser-deposited alloy showed an icorr of 3.621 μA·cm−2, with both pitting and intergranular corrosion observed. The laser-deposited alloy demonstrated improved corrosion resistance. The investigation of their microstructure and mechanical properties demonstrates the application potential of FeCoNiCrAl0.8Cu0.5Si0.5 alloys in scenarios requiring high hardness and enhanced wear resistance.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys have gained widespread concern in response to the increased requirements for future high-temperature structural superalloys. By combining phase-diagram calculations with microhardness, compression behavior measurements at room temperature, and elevated temperature conditions, the very important role of the Cr element on the microstructure and properties is deeply revealed, which provides candidates materials for future high-temperature alloy applications. The increment of Cr favors the regulation of the two-phase fraction and distribution. The thermodynamic calculations illustrate that the density and melting point of the HEAs showed an increasing trend with the increase of the Cr content. The typical worm-like microstructure of the Cr0.6 alloy with a dual BCC structure was detected. Meanwhile, on the one hand, the increment of the Cr elements results in a considerable optimization of the mechanical properties of the alloy in terms of strength and ductility at room temperature. The corresponding compressive strength and plasticity of Cr0.6 alloy at room temperature are 3524 MPa and 43.3%. On the other hand, the high-temperature mechanical properties of the alloy are greatly enhanced. At 1000 °C, the yield strength of the Cr0.6 alloy is about 25 MPa higher than that of the Cr0.4 alloy. The superior mechanical properties are attributed to the pronounced work-hardening response, and the work-hardening behavior of Cr-containing HEAs was systematically analyzed by employing the modified Ludwik model. The higher content of Cr helps the resistance of the local deformation response, improving the nonuniform strain and promoting the balance of strength and ductility of the alloys.

Abstract:Abstract A series of FeCrNiMnAl x (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0 in molar ratio) high entropy alloys (HEAs) were prepared by the vacuum arc melting method. The effects of Al content on the microstructure, mechanical and wear properties were investigated. For FeCrNiMn alloy, the microstructure was main homogeneous structure with face-centered cubic (FCC) phase, whilst FeCrNiMnAl 0.3 produced a dendritic microstructure consisting of a mixture of FCC + BCC + B2 phases, and the mixture BCC + B2 dendritic interdendritic microstructure appeared when the molar ratio of Al is beyond 0.5. The hardness and yield stress of the HEAs are effectively improved with the increased Al amount but the ductility is lowered. In this case, FeCrNiMnAl alloy showed decreased yield stress due to the deteriorated ductility. Moreover, the friction coefficient decreases, and the wear resistance improved with the increased aluminum content. FeCrNiMnAl 0.8 HEAs have the best wear resistance due to the advantages of achieving a balance of strength and ductility.
